Welcome to the first of my series of 8 videos in which – over the coming week – I’ll be sharing some of the tips, insights and themes from my new book Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business.

While the book is aimed at those who are their own boss or thinking about it, the book’s 7 (plus one) essential principles –  clarity, customers, courage, co-operation, conversations, creativity, compassion …+ change are relevant in all areas of our life and career. Chapter by chapter the Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business helps you to follow your heart and to build your business / career from your heart by utilising your skills, strengths, passion, purpose …and by forging rich relationships with others. 

Some of you may have read  tips from Soul Trader series in articles I’ve written sharing tips from the book  The Voice, Rapport magazine – or the British Library’s Business & IP Centre and other publications. The keen-eyed among young will also know that I began writing a series here on my website blog. But for you I thought I’d share the tips directly through a series of videos. Here’s the first on Clarity. 

Clarity is absolutely essential. Focus, motivation and inspiration are among the most common things clients approach me to help them with in life, career and business – and they all spring from clarity. Once yo are clear about who you are, what’s important, what your skills/talents/passion/purpose/goals/values/story is/are you will develop a huge amount of the drive, discipline and passion necessary to progress as your own boss.

Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business – The series

You may know that in October last year I launched  my new book Soul Trader -Putting the Heart Back into Your Business published by Kogan Page. 

Soul Trader is all about how to follow your heart, be your own boss and build a business that you and your customers will love by following your mission, passion, purpose and talents. It simplifies business and shows how to cut the financial / emotional costs by building your business through forging strong relationships.

Since then it’s been launched in Europe, the USA and in Asia and I’ve been very touched by the reviews and feedback Soul Trader has received so far.   At the moment I’m writing a series of articles on the book from a few places including Rapport Magazine and The Voice - and a series thats currently being published on the British Library’s website.

I’d also – a few weeks ago – started to write a series of articles here on this blog – but I thought I’d go one better by producing a series of short videos where – chapter by chapter – I share a few few of the tips, insights and principles from the book with you.

So over the coming weeks that’s what I’ll be doing. To get us started here’s an intro video which shares why I wrote the book and the context in which its written. Next up Chapter 1 Clarity – and to find out more about Soul Trader.

Inspiring events for your life, career & business in 2013

I’m mindful that for many of you this is an important year. It may be a year in which you’ll have to be on your ‘A game’ personally, professionally, in your home life, in your career, in your business.The nature of the economy, career, organisational and business environment is such that being focused, resourceful, effective is more important than it may have been for some time – whatever your circumstances in life.

Tips to succeed in 2013 – avoid the New Year’s Resolutions Trap

This time of year millions of people make New Year’s Resolutions - often only to break them within weeks. 

There are a few reasons why this happens;  among them is that we set resolutions that we feel we should make  rather than those that we are deeply committed to. It means that often the real motivation, drive, desire, discipline, passion and resolve  you need to follow through on those resolutions is absent. 

Another reason is that we often don’t set resolutions holistically in line with all the areas that are important in our life.  So we set goals to quit smoking, go to the gym or cut out drink without looking at what’s really important and that will help us in all areas of our life including our career and ourrelationships. We often also set resolutions in haste without giving them enough planning, research and ensuring that we have the apt amount of preparation or support.

It’s also interesting that as a life coach and business coach based in London I find that the only time that we often really think about our personal and professional goals is often at the start of the New Year which means that the attention, ongoing work and self / professional development that is required is often absent or falls away far too quickly. So to avoid falling into the resolutions trap you need to be holistic, mindful, resourceful, focused, flexible, and committed.

3) this awareness and approach needs to applied all year in order to blossom, progress and flourish.

I’m very aware that for many of your it’s been a tough, changing and challenging time – and for others others of you it has been a great, exciting and fulfiling year.For others it has been a mix of both.

Review your year

At this time of year the papers, magazines and our TV screens start to fill up with reviews: News reviews, entertainment reviews and much more. But very often the one review that’s missing: yours. This is the perfect time to gently step back and consider what’s gone well, take stock of the challenges and learning and to gently look ahead. And that’s what my video review below will help you to do.

So for a moment I want you to put aside some of the major global, economic, political and social events and focus on your own year. The video below – and the questions below – will help you to do that. Personally for me it’s been quite a big year year with the launch of my book Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business and the launch of my free self development website EvolvedHeart.com.

Coping with Christmas

Christmas is one of those times that creates hugely different emotions in people. For you it may be a special time personally, spiritually, in terms of the family – and / or you may find it stressful, expensive, overly commercial or it may be a challenging and lonely time. 

All too often it can lead to stress, debt, and over excess. Here are my 3 tips for managing:

1) Cash – how to avoid debt and cut the cost

2) Communication – how to avoid the family feuds and to avoid the stress

3) Celebration – tips on having fun without paying eating, drinking or partying to excess

Good Morning America… welcome to the era of the Soul Trader

Today is the US launch of my new book Soul Trader Putting the Heart Back into Your Business. 

It’s actually been 12 years since my one and only trip to the United States – so far – something that I intend to address next year perhaps with a speaking tour. On that occasion on arriving in New York I somehow felt at home. It was kind of familiar; language, people, the subway/metro/underground transport network. Yet it was all big, bright and new. Life can be big, bright and new wherever you are if you embrace it. 

At 2pm Eastern Standard time today (7pm UK time) I’m going to be running Soul Trader USA a live free talk sharing some of the tips and insights from the book to celebrate the US launch and to give the US audience a bit of a taste of my work and approach as a coach. So much is said and written about achieving success, but far less really on fulfilment and how it is arrived at. The myth in the West is that success leads to fulfilment. This is an illusion it does not. Trust me, I’ve coached millionaires and high achievers who have success and no fulfilment. The other myth about success is that if you achieve it somehow you’ll stay in that space. Not so: just look at the world economy. In that was we live in a dualistic up/down, success/failure, boom/slump world. 

Over the best part of ten years I’ve worked as a life coach, motivational speaker and business coach. Over that time I’ve coached hundreds of people one to one and addressed thousands of people through talks and workshops. I’ve discovered that those who are most fulfilled in life embrace life and embrace themselves. Those who are most wise are the same. They accept life with all it’s seasons, they work with it. If you like they live life by heart.

My new book Soul Trader is about how to build a business that you and your customers will love by following your heart, passion, purpose, skills and talents. It’s a theme that probably chimes with the American dream and America was partly built of that dream – and need – of following your heart, being enterprising. Many places around the world have that enterprising nature in their make-up too. That dream of following your heart and passions has a lot of global currency. Many people wish to, seek to, have no choice but to be their own boss, do their own thing. 

But for some reason we often soon lose our way, lose heart. It becomes more of a mind battle than a labour of love. We leave our jobs and start our businesses because we want to make not only a living, but be fulfilled, be proud of our achievements, do something of real value, serve ourselves/our family/others. In all the noise we see people as cash in the cash resister and not as fellow spirit souls. We overcomplicate business. We forget that business is simply about exchanging our skills/ talents/ resources and our inter-relationship and interdependence. We get lost in all the technology, noise and marketing.

As customers we feel sick and tire of companies that do not care about just the bucks that we pay when we are buying the products. As business owners we can easily work so long and so hard that we lose sight of the family and relationships that we claim we set up our business for in the first place. And often this goes on without us giving it another thought.

Soul Trader – like all my work – is an invitation to and from the heart. It helps you to follow your heart and get your life and business in balance.
