Meet the the gang of Paradise City.
With the impending release of Paradise City I wanted to give you a bit of an insight into this exciting new world.
Here's a taste of Paradise.
What's it all about?
There's bound to be trouble in Paradise . . .When her parents decide a change will be good for her, seventeen-year-old Lexie Atkinson never expected they'd send her all the way to Paradise City. Coming from a predictable life of home schooling on a rural Australian property, she's sure that Paradise will be amazing. But when she's thrust into a public school without a friendly face in sight, and forced to share a room with her insipid, hateful cousin Amanda, Lexie's not so sure.
Hanging out with the self-proclaimed beach bums of the city, sneaking out, late night parties and parking with boys are all things Lexie's never experienced, but all that's about to change. It's new, terrifying . . . and exciting. But when she meets Luke Ballantine, exciting doesn't even come close to describing her new life. Trouble with a capital T, Luke is impulsive, charming and answers to no one. The resident bad-boy leader of the group, he's sexier than any boy Lexie has ever known.
Amidst the stolen moments of knowing looks and heated touches, Lexie can't help but wonder if Luke is going to be good for her . . . or very, very bad?
What people have been saying:
'PARADISE CITY not only reinvents the new adult genre, but sets the standard that all new adult authors should strive for ... C. J. has crafted a sizzling storyline that could be considered to be a coming of age for the realistic, every day girl ... I loved every moment. Uniquely Australian, PARADISE CITY was simply brilliant. C. J. is a born storyteller that breathes a realism into her characters and situations that we've all found ourselves in.' Diva Booknerd blog'Drama, deception, love and a little mystery . . . the ending left me hungry for the next book! I can't wait for PARADISE ROAD!' Paranormal Tendencies on Goodreads'A bit of HOME AND AWAY meets PUBERTY BLUES feel about the novel makes is a great read for older teens and YA. I will be desperately waiting for part 2 in September.' Samantha on Goodreads'Again Ms Duggan had created a winner. Paradise City was a perfect introduction to the series and characters. I was left needing more and it had so much laugh-out-loud fun. This really did have everything from intrigue to addiction, realism of high school antics, steamy sizzles and fast paced readability. I am certainly hooked and desperately want more of all these characters. I highly recommend this to all new adult readers, fan-bloody-tastic!' Turners Antics.'Duggan’s writing is beautiful; fresh, humorous, full of heartache and yet full of hope.' Sarah Fairbairn

Viva La Canberra
I haven't blogged for a while, which is a rather curious thing seeing as so many magical little things have happened.
Where did I leave you?
Ah yes, Max's release. Wow!
So much has happened since February, I headed to Canberra for the Australian Romance Readers Convention to speak on a panel along side the immensely talented Maggie Gilbert, Kylie Scott, Rachel Bailey. We discussed something very close to my heart: The importance of New Adult.
All moderated by the super fabulous Adele Walsh.
New Adult a relatively new sub genre to be recognised, it lends itself to be so much more than sexed up Young Adult. It explores the firsts of an age that we can all relate to, a right of passage we have all travelled through. Leaving school, first loves, losing your V-plates, first jobs, Uni, travel, heartache, friendships, family being on the brink of adult hood with all its complexities and uncertainties. They are stories set in anytime. New Adult Romance can be beach side or fighting against a Zombie Apocalypse it can be light, dark, funny, riddled with angst, it can be all those things, and is so much more. Yes, it is important and no it's not going anywhere, not while there are authors and awesome readers to champion it.
It was also great to be able to meet wonderful readers at the book signing, I was so thrilled to see so many ARC copies of Paradise City make there way to my table to be signed and to hear the enthused feedback was really special.
Philippa and her amazing scrapbook never ceases to blow my mind.
Lovely to see some familiar faces, this time Elaine from the Sydney Author Event.
So…this happened. Meeting Nalini was a an absolute dream come true. I have been a massive fan for many years and to get the chance to meet with her was an absolute highlight, a truly talented and sweet person, and absolute class act.
So there you go, a rather belated run down.

Chapter OneMelanie
I had the dream again.
A dusty dirt road, illuminated by headlights: the only things visible were the flickering insects and wayward bunnies that frantically scurried out of our path. Loud, thunderous music belted out of the stereo, barely drowning out our raised voices and laughter. You would think that the cloak of night combined with the numbed senses from a few drinks at the local would make you less aware of the crunching, sliding dirt under the tyres of our car, but still I was aware, so aware. It was the one thing I remembered most; above all other noises was the sound of the sliding wheels against gravel, that and the sound of popping, breaking glass. Particles that danced in the air almost as if in slow motion as we tumbled, turned, fell, barely able to scream, breathe or believe this was happening. It was, except nothing was really slow; it all had happened so fast, and now we were powerless to stop it. Long gone was the laughter, the music, the road. Instead, irreverent pandemonium was replaced with an eerie silence, pierced only by the sinister hiss of heat escaping the crumpled carcass of twisted metal. It was the final sound I heard before the darkness took me, blacker than night ever was.
“Melanie!”
Jolted awake by my dad’s voice, it took me a bleary-eyed minute to get my bearings and realise I wasn’t back in my dreams; the passenger seat I now found myself in was very much today, and not the one from that night. I pressed my hand against the dash, shifting to straighten in my seat as I wearily blinked my eyes, encrusted with sleep, yawning. My dad’s low chuckle neared as he slid into the cabin of our car.
“What?” I asked, stretching my arms to the sky with a groan.
My dad’s eyes fixed to the top of my hair; no words were needed as his smirk told an unspoken story of amusement.
“What?” I snapped, pushing myself upright and flipping down the sun visor to access the mirror.
Bloody hell, I looked like a nightmare. My hair worked into a restless sleep, the heat of the day giving it a nice little frizz, with matted-sweaty-fringe look. Beautiful.
“Bad dream?” my dad enquired, as he started up the car.
Mostly I would share my kooky, offbeat dreams about my teeth falling out, or that feeling of falling off a cliff, but whenever it came to the same recurring dream back to that night, that was one I would never share with my dad. It was too steeped in painful reality, one I never wanted to address, the one subject that caused a world of hurt that would cloud my dad’s steely blue eyes. I hated seeing it there, hated knowing that I was responsible for it. It was a look that haunted my dreams: Dad’s eyes looking down on me in the hospital, the vision of his massive hands clasped together, his elbows on my mattress as if he was in silent prayer. The memory of this man, this six-foot-three, giant of a man reduced to that of a small, slumped figure next to me. In all my seventeen years, I had never seen my dad’s shoulders slumped in defeat, never seen the well of tears in his eyes as he reached for my hand. It was a memory I tried to push deep, deep down, until of course it inevitably resurfaced itself in my dreams. I wondered if guilt did that, forced these bad memories into my subconscious. Maybe if I did talk about the things that haunted me, they might just go away. But as I looked into my dad’s bright, sparkly eyes, I once again found myself pushing those demons deep down.
“I dreamt that I was being loaded into a car and taken somewhere against my will.” I tried for light-hearted, when really there was a none-too-subtle snark to my tone.
Dad winced as he placed on his sunnies, probably in an effort to hide his eyes from me.“That definitely sounds like a nightmare,” he agreed.
“No kidding.”
It was very much a nightmare, a living one. Since that infamous night twelve months ago, ever since I was discharged from hospital, Dad treated me as if I were made of glass, and the doting and caring nature was great, for the first few days. I understood his fear; hell, I felt really awful about it, but when his fear morphed into refusing to give me a life, well, that was getting harder and harder to deal with. I would have sooner he just yelled and screamed at me, made me cry. Instead, my fate was much worse: grounded most definitely, but even when that sentence subsided the trust issue still remained; I was not to be out of his sight. No parties, no friends, no life, aside from the typical one I was experiencing. Travelling with my dad to the shearing sheds, helping him out on the farm and going on road trips to sheep and cattle sales that he would have a hand in auctioning. It was a dusty, hot, boring existence and one my dad very well might have loved, but me … not so much.
I slumped back into my seat, blowing out a weary breath.
“Where are you dragging me to this time?”
“I told you, we’re heading to Onslow,” he said, pulling up to a stop at a T intersection and giving way to a massive grain truck.
“Onslow? Where the bloody hell is Onslow?” I asked, not even trying to hide my sneer. I had a vague recollection of Dad explaining this to me, but I must have simply zoned out seeing as I wasn’t really interested in what backward town we might hit next.
“Onslow, eh? Some crusty, dusty-arsed hick town in the middle of nowhere at a guess,” I said, as I glared out the window at the yellow, dry paddocks that whizzed on by.
A map hit my lap, the crumpled, torn one Dad kept shelved in his sun visor.
“Not exactly,” he said. “Go on, check it out.”
I cocked my brow, picking up the coffee-stained crinkled paper with the tip of my fingers as if it were something putrid.
Dad sighed, as if his patience was wearing thin. He snatched it off me, his gaze flicking from the road to the map and back before finding what he was looking for. “There,” he said, pointing to a circle on the map. “Onslow.”
I feigned interest as I looked over the map. There was a lot of blue, a lot of green, a lot of bumpy curves that I assumed were hills that went on and on.
“Not dusty, not flat, not dry,” Dad said with a small smile.
“Okaaaay,” I said.
So this was a first, maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all, something different.
“It’s nestled in the valley of the Perry Ranges, amazing lake system, brings lots of tourists there for the holiday seasons.”
Oh, this was sounding better and better, I couldn’t even remember the last time I had gone on a holiday.
“Max says it’s real beautiful.”
My head snapped toward Dad.
What did he just say?
“M-Max?”
Surely he didn’t mean the Max, my Max, the Max from Ballan who I had secretly loved and lusted over all my life until he broke my heart when he moved away, and for all things, ‘further education’. Pfft, whatever!
“Max Henry, lives there now.”
Good God, it was my Max, the one and only Max Henry. My heart started to slam against my chest. I straightened in my seat suddenly at full attention and with keen interest in our new destination.
“Does he know we’re coming?”
Will we see him? Will I get a chance to talk to him? What had it been a year, two? Whatever it was, it felt like a lifetime.
Dad laughed, rubbing the stubble of his chin in thought. “Not exactly, but he will.”
“How so?”
“Well, because we’re going to be crashing at his place,” he said, glancing over to catch my widened stare. “He just doesn’t know it yet.”
Oh. My. God.
Wan't more of Max?

I'm so happy I could air guitar!
Something amazing happened last week!
On the brink of Australia Day weekend I was so honoured to see my Summer Series Boxed Set was chosen to be featured on iBooks 'Rising Stars of Australian Fiction'
Like, seriously wow!
Not only do I have deep respect for iBooks, but to actually be recognised in such a category is something that is quite close to my heart.
To be an Australian Author, writing about Australian characters in Australian settings is something I have always been extremely passionate about, and the fact that the iBookstore continually helps support local authors is an amazing thing. Australian voices should be celebrated, and it is very much an honour to be featured next to this fine selection.
Check out the incredible line up HERE on iBooks.
Also another exciting thing of note is what released January 26th (Australia Day)

For the first time ever you can now purchase the SUMMER SERIES Boxed Set!

Don't Shoot the Messenger.
I hate being the bearer of bad news, I really-really hate it.
But in this case the bad news has an underlying factor of good.
I promise. *cringe*
In 2015 I always said: Its going to be about travel. That was my full intention and I had a pretty huge, and exciting line up of international book signings spread out out over the year, it was ALL planned.
But the thing is…
Things happen, and in this case it was a pretty amazing, life changing thing that had me rethinking all future commitments particularly in April/August.
For those of you who may not know, September last year I signed a two book deal with Hachette, Australia. You can read my announcement here. This in many ways has been a significant game changer in my schedule. The first book Paradise City will be released April 28th, the exact same time I had planned to be in the UK.
So I made the decision to do the one thing that really should be the main factor. The books have to come first, and as much as I love signings I do need to be here in Australia to be able to commit myself 100%.
So as it stands I have decided to cancel my UK and US signings for this year, with the view to still sign at the Montreal signing in September.
I am really-REALLY sorry to not be able to meet my readers who were coming to any of these events, it was not an easy decision, but I really do need to concentrate on what is to come in order to be able to release books you will love.
So the update:
CanberraGold CoastLondon - CANCELLEDYork - CANCELLEDSan Francisco - CANCELLEDMontreal Melbourne
Mid year will see me concentrate on releasing my brand new Paradise Series, as well as touring with some local events. I am hoping that 2016 will be about travel as I am so eager to meet my international readers. All information will be updated on the EVENTS page of my website, with any further announcements and additions that will follow.
As much as it is really upsetting to have to make these decisions I am really excited for what is to come in 2015 and what catalogue I will be bringing to signings in 2016.
Including TWO completed Series.
The Summer SeriesThe Paradise Series
I want to thank each and every one of the event organisers who run these incredible signings. Often organised by dedicated, passionate bloggers who already bring so much to the book community. It is always a great honour to be invited to any signing, and the amount of hard work and effort that goes into the organising of such epic bookish events is simply mind boggling. Us authors would be nothing without your dedication, and I thank you so very much for all that you do.

Let's Synchronise our Diaries.
Housekeeping.
Now that it's all lovely and official, and we have exciting conformation and dates in regards to BRAND NEW series, with my two book deal with Hachette, 'The Paradise Series' I can now clarify where this new novels will fit into the bigger picture and what this means for 2015. If you missed the announcement you can check it out HERE.
Lets break it down...
What's next?
Max
This novella will be released early Feb. I am currently working on Max's story right now and aiming to get this completed by December 18th and ready for the editors. Hoorah! I can not wait for you to meet Max Henry and Melanie Sheehan, lots of lies, lust and laughter with these two. I am REALLY looking forward to this Onslow Boy, perhaps because we know the least about him.
Max Henry thought he’d left the dusty flats of Ballan behind, but when the past slams into his present, suddenly there is no escaping – even if he wanted to.
Melanie Sheehan didn’t set out to be a liar, but her last lie landed her in big trouble. Now Mel must suffer a harsh consequence – she’s not allowed out of her father’s sight.
No friends, no parties, no life.
Since impeccably good behaviour is now all she’s about, her dad, renowned Ballan local ‘Bluey’ Sheehan, is about to finally cut Mel some slack. The catch? While he heads out of town on business, she has to stay at the Onslow Hotel, and he’s entrusting Max Henry, the eldest son of Bluey’s best mate, to look out for her.
He just doesn’t know it yet.
Max, the new head barman at the Onslow Hotel, is the one boy Mel has been crushing on since forever. At a time when Mel plans to go on the straight and narrow, she is about to tell the biggest lie of all. Will Max be able to handle the fiery farm girl or should he be considered the last boy in Onslow to trust?
Paradise City
The first book in my steamy summer romance set in a coastal Aussie City. The release will be April 28th, 2015 and will be available in ebook form and all good local bookshops.
There's bound to be trouble in Paradise . . .
When her parents decide a change will be good for her, seventeen-year-old Lexie Atkinson never expected they'd send her all the way to Paradise City.
But when she meets Luke Ballantine, excitingdoesn't even come close to describing her new life.
Paradise Road
The second book in the Paradise Series will be released August 28th, 2015.
In the sequel to CJ Duggan's PARADISE CITY Lexie Atkinson discovers that the road back to Paradise is never easy . . .
More than anything, seventeen-year-old Lexie Atkinson wants to move forward with her life, but she can't seem to shake free of the heart-pounding memories of Paradise High. Back on her parents' property in rural Victoria, she thought she'd left behind the glitzy, gritty nightlife of the big city and the group of misfit friends she'd loved to hate, but she soon realises that in order to move forward, there's something she must do first ...
Lexie's going back to Paradise City to face the boy who stole her heart.
Lexie arrives in Paradise City eager to determine if her future includes bad-boy surfer, Luke Ballantine, but Luke is nowhere to be found. Determined not to lose her drive, she focuses on the positive - her amazing new apartment and a chance to try her hand at slinging drinks for the wild partygoers of Paradise City. But when Dean Saville, the owner and broody boss of the Wipe Out Bar, starts stirring more than just her drinks Lexie's future seems less cut and dry; and when Luke barrels back into town, Lexie is forced to choose between her head and her heart.
Forever Summer
I know this is yet another push back for Adam and Ellie's story, which I really hate to do, but I also have to do what works. Personal circumstances prevented me from releasing this story earlier in the year, and then I felt that Stan and Max had to take priority before the final instalment. I wanted to build a full, rounded picture for this series, and of course amidst me doing that I signed a book deal with Hachette for the Paradise series. So my time frame has completely been adjusted in order to allow me to release the Onslow Boy Novella's and bring you something new, and exciting for 2015. I like to think of this as win-win, you get Max (yay) You get a BRAND NEW, hot Aussie romance with consecutive releases, and then the cherry on the cake will be Adam and Ellie's story in Forever Summer. It is really important that I do their story justice, that I am able to give them my all, my full attention and not rush their release in between other releases. My hope is that I can give you something I am proud of as these characters mean so much.
You see there’s this boy.
He makes me smile, forces me to listen, serenades me out of tune and keeps me sane, all the while driving me insane. He's really talented like that. But for the first time in since, well, forever, things are about to change. The question is, how much am I willing to lose in order to potentially have it all?
So there you have it, save the dates and grab the pre-orders for all four titles. Here!

But when she meets Luke Ballantine, excitingdoesn't even come close to describing her new life.
Paradise Road
The second book in the Paradise Series will be released August 28th, 2015.

My Very Big Announcement!
For the past many-many months I have been keeping a secret. A big, wonderful secret that I am finally, FINALLY able to share with you all.
I got a book a deal.
I am thrilled to announce that I have signed a world rights deal for two (yes, TWO!) books with Hachette, Australia.
I am contracted to write a brand new (NEW ADULT) Romance. 'The Paradise Series'
Paradise City and Paradise Road
My books are coming to the shelves!
It is hard to put into words how I feel about it, it's almost like an out of body experience in many ways.
This year had begun on such a high note, with The Boys of Summer being featured as BOOK OF THE WEEK internationally on the iBookstore, then came the Indie Authors Down Under Book Signing with scheduled signings in Sydney and Edinburgh to follow, 2014 was going to be filled with so many incredible things.
March lead into April and that's when life wasn't so many amazing anymore. In April my dad was unexpectedly diagnosed with terminal Cancer, he passed away ten days later. My world had been turned upside down and writing was just a distant memory as I tried to work through the grief, me and my family were dealing with.
Naturally I took a big step away from everything book related, my heart and head couldn't deal with much more than just getting through the days. I don't even know what drove me to check my emails on this particular day, I just knew I had to claw my way back into the writing world at some stage and thought I would ease back into it by answering some fan mail. I was about three emails in when I found myself staring at the screen, blinking and leaning in to make sure I wasn't seeing things.
I think my heart momentarily stopped, and I saw a white light. I had received an email from the Publishing Director of Hachette who asked me if I had ever considered traditionally publishing my work?
My surprise quickly morphed into horror as I saw the email was dated a month prior, around the time where everything was happening with Dad. I emailed back immediately, explaining my delay thinking maybe the ship had sailed? What I instead discovered was what would be the first step into something very exciting.
After many months of exchange an offer was made for a brand new series! I signed the contract and on this very day I have submitted my MS (the latest WIP I have been in the cave for.) All those late night rambling status updates and chocolate consuming served a purpose.
And now on the brink of attending the Sydney Author Event on Saturday, where right there on the Hachette table (and mine) you will be able to discover beautiful postcards for Paradise City. I am so thrilled to be able to use this awesome event to launch something so incredibly exciting.
Okay I really didn't want this to be an acceptance speech, I really wanted to avoid this moment.
or this…
But as I pack my bags to head to Sydney to meet more amazing readers and hang out with some incredibly awesome authors, (and all before my birthday) I am really looking forward to sharing this new part of my world with you.
I am also incredibly proud of my effort in not mentioning the word 'journey' throughout this post.
But I couldn't help but post a pic of me signing my contract.
The first book titled Paradise City is now available for pre-order and is due for release April 28th 2015.

In so many ways that very email changed my life, it forced me back into the book world, to throw myself into a new project and fall back in love with writing again, something I feared I would never be able to get back into. And I know, without a shadow of a doubt that my dad would have been so very proud, it's so incredibly bitter sweet that I am unable to share this with him, but I also believe he may very well have pulled a few strings with the big guy upstairs. The first book being due for release APRIL 2015, exactly one year after losing him, I think this might be his way of keeping me busy? Sounds like something he would do.
