Η Πρώτη Σελίδα Του Επόμενου Βιβλίου Του Τόμας Πίντσον
Ο Πίντσον βγάζει νέο βιβλίο στις 17 Σεπτεμβρίου (σε 149 ημέρες!) που θα λέγεται "Bleeding Edge" και θα έχει υπόθεση που διαδραματίζεται στη Νέα Υόρκη του 2001, τους μήνες μετά το σκάσιμο της φούσκας του web και πριν την 11η Σεπτεμβρίου. Ο εκδότης δημοσίευσε μόλις (PDF link) ένα μικροσκοπικό απόσπασμα από το βιβλίο, την πρώτη του σελίδα. Νάτη:

It is 2001 in New York City, in the lull between the collapse of the dot-com boom and the terrible events of September 11th. Silicon Alley is a ghost town, Web 1.0 is having adolescent angst, Google has yet to IPO, Microsoft is still considered the Evil Empire. There may not be quite as much money around as there was at the height of the tech bubble, but there’s no shortage of swindlers looking to grab a piece of what’s left.
Maxine Tarnow is running a nice little fraud investigation business on the Upper West Side, chasing down different kinds of small-scale con artists. She used to be legally certified but her license got pulled a while back, which has actually turned out to be a blessing because now she can follow her own code of ethics—carry a Beretta, do business with sleazebags, hack into people’s bank accounts—without having too much guilt about any of it. Otherwise, just your average working mom—two boys in elementary school, an off-and-on situation with her sort of semi-exhusband Horst, life as normal as it ever gets in the neighborhood—till Maxine starts looking into the finances of a computer-security firm and its billionaire geek CEO, whereupon things begin rapidly to jam onto the subway and head downtown. She soon finds herself mixed up with a drug runner in an art deco motorboat, a professional nose obsessed with Hitler’s aftershave, a neoliberal enforcer with footwear issues, plus elements of the Russian mob and various bloggers, hackers, code monkeys, and entrepreneurs, some of whom begin to show up mysteriously dead. Foul play, of course.
With occasional excursions into the Deep Web and out to Long Island, Thomas Pynchon, channeling his inner Jewish mother, brings us a historical romance of New York in the early days of the internet, not that distant in calendar time but galactically remote from where we’ve journeyed to since.
Will perpetrators be revealed, forget about brought to justice? Will Maxine have to take the handgun out of her purse? Will she and Horst get back together? Will Jerry Seinfeld make an unscheduled guest appearance? Will accounts secular and karmic be brought into balance?

1. Ένα ρεπορτάζ από τη Βόρεια Κορέα
Εδώ, ένα μακρουλό ρεπορτάζ της Daily Mail (ναι, δυστυχώς, αλλά περίμενε) στο οποίο ο συντάκτης περιγράφει την εμπειρία του από την επίσκεψή του στο πιο αλλόκοτο -και πιθανότατα το πιο ανελεύθερο- κράτος της Γης.

2. Ποια είναι η ετυμολογία του "ΟΚ";
Ένα θαυμάσιο άρθρο για την προέλευση των δημοφιλών -και διεθνών- δύο γραμμάτων. Δεν είχες αναρωτηθεί; Εγώ ναι.
There may be more stories about the origin of "OK" than there are uses for it: it comes from the Haitian port "Aux Cayes," from Louisiana French au quai, from a Puerto Rican rum labeled "Aux Quais," from German alles korrekt or Ober-Kommando, from Chocktaw okeh, from Scots och aye, from Wolof waw kay, from Greek olla kalla, from Latin omnes korrecta. Other stories attribute it to bakers stamping their initials on biscuits, or shipbuilders marking wood for "outer keel," or Civil War soldiers carrying signs for "zero killed."

On Saturday, March 23, 1839, the editor of the Boston Morning Post published a humorous article about a satirical organization called the "Anti-Bell Ringing Society " in which he wrote:
"The "Chairman of the Committee on Charity Lecture Bells," is one of the deputation, and perhaps if he should return to Boston, via Providence, he of the Journal, and his train-band, would have his "contribution box," et ceteras, o.k.—all correct—and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward".
It wasn't as strange as it might seem for the author to coin OK as an abbreviation for "all correct." There was a fashion then for playful abbreviations like i.s.b.d (it shall be done), r.t.b.s (remains to be seen), and s.p. (small potatoes). They were the early ancestors of OMG, LOL, and tl;dr. A twist on the trend was to base the abbreviations on alternate spellings or misspellings, so "no go" was k.g. (know go) and "all right" was o.w. (oll write). So it wasn't so surprising for someone come up with o.k. for oll korrect. What is surprising is that it ended up sticking around for so long while the other abbreviations faded away.

5. Σχετικά με τα εκπληκτικά νέα γραφεία της Apple
Το Bloomberg Businessweek έχει ολόκληρη την ιστορία της κατασκευής των νέων γραφείων της Apple στο Κουπερτίνο μέχρι τώρα, με πάρα πολλές λεπτομέρειες και πληροφορίες που ως τώρα δεν είχαν δει το φως της δημοσιότητας. Το γιγάντιο κτίριο έχει σχεδιάσει το γραφείο του Νόρμαν Φόστερ, και αναμένεται να κοστίσει περί τα 5 δις δολάρια. Δεν είναι μια ιστορία χωρίς προβλήματα, ανατροπές και γκρίνιες, ωστόσο.
Few architects will publicly question the judgment of Jobs and Foster, but many privately snicker at the doughnut-shaped design. At a time when Google, Facebook, and others favor floor plans that promote as many chance meetings as possible—a Jobsian virtue—the circle could isolate people and teams. A circle does not allow for much flexibility. Many companies today opt for “living buildings” that can be easily reconfigured. Facebook’s West Campus in Mountain View will be one huge quarter-mile-long structure—essentially a large warehouse that can be adjusted on the fly as projects are launched and finished.

Αυτή εδώ η κυρία βάζει στο Facebook της profile pics που ταιριάζουν και συμπληρώνουν την cover photo της, που είναι σχεδόν πάντα μια σκηνή από κινηματογραφική ταινία.
3) Ανοίγματα περιοδικών
Θυμάσαι κάποτε που υπήρχαν αυτοί οι πάκοι από χάρτινα φύλλα κι ο κόσμος απάνω σ' αυτά διάβαζε; Να ένα Pinterest board με "σαλόνια" περιοδικών.

Να ένα ενδιαφέρον προϊόν τέχνης: Στιγμιότυπα από τα πεζοδρόμια της Νέας Υόρκης σε πολύ αργή κίνηση. Οι φάτσες, οι εκφράσεις και οι μορφές των ανθρώπων αποκτούν μιαν άλλη διάσταση. Μοιάζουν πιο γαλήνιοι. Σχεδόν πιο όμορφοι.

Ο γνωστός ηθοποιός μιλάει πολύ ωραία για ένα σωρό πράγματα στον Guardian.
"Fame is really strange," he says. "One day you're not famous and then the next day you are, and the odd thing is that you know intellectually that nothing in the world is different. What mattered to you yesterday are the same things that matter today and the rules all still apply – yet everyone looks at you differently. So the surreal part of it is that the world is exactly the same, but it is completely different for you. The way you experience the world is never the same again".

The only sampling bias is that these writers responded to a thread I started titled: “The Self Published Authors I Want to Hear From.” I wanted to know how many forum members were making $100 to $500 a month. My suspicion was that it was more than any of us realized. Every response I received started with a variation of: “I’m actually making a lot more than that.”
