This week’s Inheritance Books are from author and blogger Van Heerling

Hi Van, welcome to Inheritance Books. Tell me a bit about yourself.

I have lived in California all my life. Although I have been to a number of places, I always come home to California. I am married and have a new little one-year-old boy. He has overcome a tremendous feat during his first year of life. He was born at just over one and a half pounds. I am very proud of him and am beyond relieved that he is doing so well.

A House in Norham Gardens

When it comes to places to set my stories, I’m a firm believer in writing what you know. My first book is set in an office in London, which is a fairly generic location, nothing special. My second book is set in a house in North Oxford – somewhere very special indeed.

In Having a Ball, Stevie takes on the job of organising a charity ball in the house that Evelyn has been renovating. This house is a beautiful, sprawling Victorian villa. Its front rooms have huge windows and high ceilings. Its c...

Inheritance Books – Moira Briggs

Happy New Year everyone! I’m delighted to start of the Inheritance Books for 2013 with someone who is a reader and reviewer – Moira Briggs of Vulpes Libris.

Hi Moira, welcome to the blog. Tell me a bit about yourself.moira-looking-misleadingly-benevolent1

In real life I’ve been the manager of a tiny complementary healthcare charity – the Centre for Complementary Care – in the Western Lake District for over 20 years. It’s based in a beautiful old vicarage on the slopes of Muncaster Fell, with gorgeous views over lower Eskdale. (Wh...

Inheritance Books: Karen Chase

This week, Karen Chase shares her Inheritance Books. She sent such a fabulous photo that I’ve changed the format to fit round it.

(Karen's caption): My favorite photo of me with Grandma Small’s book, reading to my friend’s dog, Lola.

Inheritance Books – Hayley Linfield

This week, Hayley Linfield shares her Inheritance Books. Hi Hayley, welcome to Inheritance Books. Tell me about yourself.

HayleypicMy name’s Hayley Linfield.I’m a reader, a writer, and a mother.I’m many other things too – a struggling clarinetist, a reluctant gardener, an even more reluctant housekeeper, a mediocre pianist, a movie-watcher, a debater of social issues… The list could go on, as it could for anyone.

Which book did you inherit from the generation above?

I was raised on the subtle humor of Wi...

Why an unpublished author needs an online presence

Do you need an online presence if you’re an unpublished author? Yes. Oh yes.

Social media wordle

My friend Jen, who is pre-published (she will be sometime, she’s good), still hasn’t taken the plunge and set up her online presence. I understand where she’s coming from, I did the same. We writers are all a little insecure as to whether we really are as good as we think we are. So, until someone like an agent or a publisher validates our writing by asking for more, we tend to hide the fact that we do anything intere...

Inheritance Books – Henriette Gyland

This week the lovely Henriette Gyland shares her Inheritance Books. I met Henri at the RNA conference earlier this year. She was the only other person in the room who knew what a merkin was. Although none of us were sure why anyone would need one.

Hi Henriette, welcome to Inheritance Books, tell me a bit about yourself.

I grew up in Northern Denmark but moved to England in the early 1990s, and now live in a lively suburb of London. For as long as I can remember I’ve been making up stories – thi...

Review: The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read this years ago when I was child. My daughter is now reading it at school, so we got the book on tape for her to listen to. Hearing it again as an adult, I really appreciate how funny and lively the characters are. It’s a lovely book about overcoming your fear of the dark.

“It’s a Catherine wheel!” said the little boy

“Actually,” said the Catherine Wheel, “I’m a barn owl.”

How lovely is that?

inheritance Books – Lisa Darling

This week Lisa Darling talks about her Inheritance Books.

Hi Lisa, welcome to the blog. Please tell me a bit about yourself.

I’ve been married for the last 26 years to my wonderful husband, Roy. We live in my hometown of New London, CT.

My writing career began in junior high, around the 7th grade. A fact that my fellow students adored but often got me called down to the Guidance Counselor’s Office to discuss the adultness of my stories. While the experience was never pleasant, I was not deterred...
