Hi. I’m Rhoda. I write smart contemporary romantic comedy. In real life, I’m a former scientist who now works in intellectual property. The rest of the time I’m a sensible grown up Mum.

I prefer my heroes to be nice guys with a sense of humour and me heroines to be smart and independent. If you like Mhairi McFarlane or Sophie Kinsella, you'll probably like my books tool

I also write women's fiction, often featuring Sri Lankan characters, under the name Jeevani Charika.

A few of my novels have been shortlisted for prestigious awards. If you want to 'try before you buy', you can get a free novella by signing up to my newsletter via my website: www.rhodabaxter.com

The inspiration for my next book (Please Release Me) actually came to me in a dream! Cliche or what.
I woke up with an image of two women sitting next to each other, not entirely comfortable in each other's company. One woman was translucent and wearing a wedding dress. These women eventually became Grace, the heroine and Sally, the hero's wife.
Sally is a ghost and only Grace can see her. Grace is in love with Sally's husband. The women need each other to an extent, and they get on quite well if it weren't for the 'both wanting the same man' thing. The best description for their relationship is probably 'frenemies'.(less)

I'd love to go Hogwarts. Who doesn't want to have magical abilities?!
what would I do there? I'm afraid I'd go a bit Hermione Granger and study, study, study until I knew lots of spells and could do all sorts of cool things.

Tell you where I'd hate to go - Alice's Wonderland. So unpredictable. I'd be a total gibbering wreck within minutes.(less)

Book review: The Cottage at the Edge of the Woods by Jane Lovering

I always enjoy Jane Lovering’s books so I snapped this up when I saw it on Netgalley.
Single mum Libby is running away from a controlling relationship and has her two year old with her. She’s taking on part time work in order to make ends meet. She has been hired by the stressed out architect Ross, who wants her to persuade a squatter to leave a ramshackle house that’s on his property. Oh yes,

How Can I Resist You? by Jeevani Charika
"Secrets and contracts turn into foreplay in this whip-smart romcom about sisterhood, accidental HR breaches, and a buttoned-up hero coming undone. I adored every sharp, tender, and gloriously awkward beat."

This is book two in a duology. Technically, you don't need to have read The Clockwork Boys to follow the plot of this one, but ... it really helps.

"The second half of Clocktaur Wars (it's one book, let's not mess about) is as glorious as the first. Kingfisher says this took her over a decade to write: you would not know it from the flowing ease of the writing, which feels joyously effortless.

Girl in Trouble is a wonderful story. True to it’s subtitle, it’s a slow burn romance that hooked me in and then dragged me along through the ups and downs of opening your heart after it’s been shielded for so long. Rhoda does" Read more of this review »

“Witches are naturally nosy,” said Miss Tick, standing up. “Well, I must go. I hope we shall meet again. I will give you some free advice, though.”
“Will it cost me anything?”
“What? I just said it was free!” said Miss Tick.
“Yes, but my father said that free advice often turns out to be expensive,” said Tiffany.
Miss Tick sniffed. “You could say this advice is priceless,” she said, “Are you listening?”
“Yes,” said Tiffany.
“Good. Now...if you trust in yourself...”
“Yes?”

“Yes?”

Maria I just "jumped" to your blog for the first time, and I LOVE the idea of "Inheritance Books"! What a wonderful idea to ask people to talk about a book they inherited!!
