Books a Romance Writer Can't Live Without: Part 2
Hello Lovelies,
As promised here is part 2 of my "Books a Romance Writer Can't Live Without" series of posts. You can find part 1 of this series here.
Today I'd like to cover the editing books that I love and continually refer to. So you may be asking yourself, why would you need more than one editing book? The answer my friends is that each of these awesome tomes imparts a different perspective and approach to editing, but each one is a must read for anyone serious about cleaning up their manuscript for submission to a publishing house or agent. And for those of you who go the indie or hybrid indie route, these are great to read, because in many case the more work an editor has to spend on your manuscript, the more money you'll have to pay.
So here goes...
1.) Revision and Self Editing for Publication AND 2.) Revision and Self-Editing by James Scott Bell
These books are basically your ULTIMATE guide to step by step editing. When I purchased these books I didn't realize that they would be practically identical (actually written by the same person). but I don't regret either purchase. I keep one in my office and the other on my nightstand for some "light" reading. My favorite thing about this book is that it covers EVERYTHING. Plot, character development, dialogue, setting, emotions...It's great. There's even a chapter titled "The Ultimate Revision Checklist". Yup there is an actual chapter dedicated to helping you find problems and better yet, it also provides common fixes. It's not just a "Oh you have a lot of adverbs there, guess you f-ed up." It provides you with ways to correct the issues that need fixing. For me, someone who can barely cook rice without a rice cooker, this is phenomenal. I highly recommend purchasing either one of these books (or both). It's a definite must in my author library.
3.) Self Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King
Okay so I saved the best for last. This is the book you read AFTER you finish your first manuscript and before you begin tinkering and revising your first draft. This is the book that will kick you in the chins and shine an ugly light on the book you just birthed through blood, sweat and tears. Just take a deep breath and crank that halogen bulb up. This book gives you a higher level look at editing. Although each chapter ends with a checklist of things to look for in your ms and exercises for practice, the beauty of this book lies in its ability to get you to really think about the overall structure of your book and each scene that you've included. After the first two chapters you will find yourself questioning whether some scenes are even necessary for your story. Is your dialogue stilted? Are your characters related? Basically it forces you to be honest. Something that is very difficult to do after you've spent hours getting the words out of your head into print. Buy this book, read it. Spend a few hours crying because you just didn't realize how little you knew. Then pull your big pants on and get to revising. You'll thank yourself later.
Okay so that's the end of this post. Tomorrow I'll cover some books I reference for story structure, setting and emotion.
Talk to you soon,
Laurel

Books a Romance Writer Can't Live Without: Part 1
Good (Early) Morning Lovelies,
I'm hard at work prepping for my December releases and finishing up a current work in progress, but my creative fuel is waning and I know I'm in desperate need of a break tonight.
Before hitting the pillows, I wanted to share with you a portion of my "author library". These are books that I constantly reference and have available ALWAYS. I have both the ebook and hard copy of these bad boys so that I'm never left scratching my head in confusion...at least about story structure and editing.
Yes the title of this post is a bit misleading. It should read books Laurel can't live without and the picture above is really only a small portion of my "stash". However, the books I'm about to list are AWESOME. Just trust me on this. If you're new to fiction writing or a veteran in the ranks, these are great to have available. I heart them so much that I'm willing to share their awesomeness with you!
So here we go....
1.) The Emotion ThesaurusThe title says it all. This book is my go to when my mind goes blank, and I want to describe emotions or set the proper tone for a scene. This book doesn't just give you synonyms and antonyms to emotions, it also provides actions and feelings most commonly associated with specific emotions. If you're stuck trying to show not tell, grab this book from the shelf and you'll be back typing away in no time.
2.) Outlining Your NovelYes some of us are plotters, some of are pantsters and some are those hybrid mythical creatures know as plantsters. No matter which breed you belong to LEARN TO OUTLINE YOUR BOOK!. Do it before, during or after, but do it. Creating an outline helps you figure out holes in your plot and seeing where your story falls flat. This book helps you get that done. Read it, learn it, live it. Yes I know that sounds kind of culty, but think of it this way...If you can't create a brief sketch of your book on paper, how do you plan on providing a pitch to an agent or editor? How do you plan on writing a synopsis for submissions? Guess what? An outline makes this much easier.
3.) Write That Book AlreadyI'm not going to lie. When I first purchased this book I was supremely dissapointed. I thought that it was going to be a how to manual and it wasn't. It languished on my shelves for a good year before I picked it up again. This is a classic case of absence making the heart grow fonder. This is the book you pick up when you're banging your head against your desk and questioning your sanity for venturing into the crazy world of writing. It provides you with motivation and incredibly sound advice and tips to finishing (or starting) that book. It also covers information regarding the industry and navigating it. You need this book. It will save your sanity, your friendships, your marriage. In some cases there is weight loss and a clearer complexion. Just read it.
Okay so that's the end of part one. I'll follow-up with the rest of my library tomorrow with part 2. I'll cover my favorite editing books and why EVERY writer should learn to self-edit. EVERY WRITER.

Winter Book Releases
Good Evening Lovelies,
I love this time of year! There are back to back holidays that just get me in a happy as can be mood. Starting with Halloween I'm usually sporting an annoying grin till New Years. The addition of pumpkin pancakes to the mix a few years ago only added to my overall happiness. However this year there are a few extra bits of awesome that have catapulted my holiday mood to squee-tastic proportions. This afternoon I finalized my book launch schedule for the end of the year!
Although I had originally hoped to have both Acquisition Skills and Cupcakes at Midnight launched in November and January respectively, plans have changed slightly. Those two books have been pushed back to early 2014, and I'll announce the release dates as soon as they're confirmed. However, I'm super happy to announce that starting in December, I will be releasing the first of four (yes FOUR) new books! SQUEEEEEE!
My winter line up is as follows:
Wynter's Fall December 22nd 2013
Executive Control December 30th 2013
Wynter's Grace January 20th 2014
Wynter's End February 24th 2014
Wynters's Fall, Wynter's Grace and Wynter's Fall are part of my Wynter's Tales trilogy. Each one is a small twist on a some of my favorite fairy tales and rhymes. I'm really excited about this series. Aside from the stories told in each book, I've included a little surprise in each one that has me bouncing off the walls in anticipation. I hope you all like them.
Executive Control, is a sexy contemporary that I promise you, will scorch your e-readers :). There's just something about sassy women and the men who love to chase them that always makes me smile. Executive Control is not a part of my Boardroom Acts series, but if you loved Negotiating Skills and Persuasion Skills , you'll definitely enjoy this read.
I'll be posting blurbs for each of these releases soon. However, since I have to share at least one thing, here's a sneak peak at the cover for Executive Control.

Tuesday Teasing with Iyana Jenna

It's been a long while since I posted any new books or teases. I'll be remedying that soon. Casual Smex Friday and Foreplay Monday will be back in full force in November. However, until then the lovely Iyana Jenna was nice enough to provide a little Tuesday Teaser.
If you check out the gorgeous book cover to the left you'll see the cover reveal for Iyana's latest book, A Single Black Rose.
I love cover reveals. They're the perfect tease to the beginning of a new story. Let's face it a pretty cover always draws the eye and I love this one! Aside from complementing the title it also sets a tone that I find intriguing and yes, it does have me interested at first glance about the story within. The hot guy brooding also helps :).
What are your thoughts? What about covers tantalize and tease you? What draws you in and captures your attention.
A SINGLE BLACK ROSE Coming on November 17, 2013, from JMS Books LLC.
Blurb
Actor Sean O'Reilly received a bouquet of roses that at first he thought was sent by his boyfriend, Nate Matthews. Alarm bells rang when Nate said that he hadn't sent them. Sean panicked when he kept receiving flowers over the next days, and what worried him more was that there was always a single black rose in the middle of other colored ones.
Together they tried to find out the meaning of all this. They found no answers. Sean and Nate didn’t realize that a wicked plot against Sean had been set up by an obsessed fan who was helped by a brother who had promised to always take care of him.
Did you like your tease? Go ahead and show Iyana some love. You can find her hopping around the web, trailing smexy prose left and right.

Evernight Birthday Hop! #BDayBashHop
Celebrate like a ROCK STAR because Evernight Publishing is THREE!
In three short years, Evernight has grown by leaps and bounds thanks to readers like you! Evernight is pulling out all the stops and throwing an extreme BIRTHDAY BASH BLOG HOP in your honor!
That’s right! It’s Evernight’s birthday but YOU get the presents…

Prizes include: Samsung Galaxy Tab Kindle Paperwhite Kobo Touch $100 Evernight and Amazon Gift Certificates Mega Evernight Swag Pack Plus, each author on the hop will offer his/her own special prize!
I'm honored to be part of this year's birthday hop. Aside from being a great group to work with Evernight will always hold a special place in my heart. I struggled at the beginning of this year, trying to decide to if I should take the leap and submit my latest book, Persuasion Skills to publishers. After months of nail biting and second guessing, I pressed that "Send" button and the rest is history. Evernight became my first publisher and I haven't regretted the decision to publish with them.
What makes Evernight so amazing, isn't just the variety of romance sun-genres or great authors (who I adore), its the community they've fostered with both the readers and authors. I love how as both an author and reader of all the Evernight lines, that I can interact so easily with other readers and share the love and enjoyment the romance genre.
The Evernight Reader group on Facebook is just plain fantastic. And the Twitter feeds always put a smile on my face and yes, they also tend to add another book to my tbr pile :).
As I mentioned above Evernight published my second book, Persuasion Skills earlier this summer. So since it's rude not to bring gofts to a birthday bash...
I'll be providing a $25 Amazon Gift Card as my own prize to all of the Evernight followers and readers that have made my books a success this year.
To win? Just place a comment below telling me your favorite thing about friends-to-lovers romances. What do you love or hate about them? Be sure to include your email address so that I can send you your prize if your comment is selected as the winner. Good luck!

Persuasion Skills by Laurel Cremant In the aftermath of a major health scare, Pepper Holts makes the relief-inspired decision to seize the day. Unfortunately, most of her “seizing” involves a bit of merlot and her best friend's pants! After a shared night of passion she realizes that her feelings for Jax are a lot more complicated than she ever thought.
Jax has finally realized that his allergy to marriage has nothing to do with the institution itself, and everything to do with the women in his bed—or more specifically, the one woman not in his bed. Her reaction to their one night together has him scrambling to regroup. So he does what he knows best—he disappears, and he thinks. The plan?—convince Pepper into staying with him at a secluded cabin for one week. One week of pretending to be a happily married couple to show her how great they could be together.

Another Song Inspiration...
Good Evening Lovelies,
A few days ago I was just sifting through my mp3 stash, looking to create a new playlist for my latest book and found myself adding songs at random. My normal m.o. is to add songs with a moderate to fast tempo. These quick tempo/beat songs are great for writing (at least for me). So anyhoo, there I was bopping my head away to some Nicki Minaj, when...a somewhat oldie but a goody began to play.
A few years back I was all about Ne-Yo's Miss Independent. I rocked out to that song like it was my personal anthem, and in a lot of ways it was. Despite my relationship and marital status I've always believed in being self sufficient. My parents raised me to be independent and confident in my own skills and abilities. Can I accept help? Yes. Do I always need it? No. Can I change my own tires, use my own power tools and pay my own bills? Yes. Does that make me appreciate my husband less? Hell No. He's got a work shop, and technical know how that I find just down right sexy. That man describing the finer points of C# is a sexy thing to behold.
However I digress...So I found my self constantly replaying this one song, and the next thing I know, my heroine has warped from the role as hired lawyer to my hero to...my hero's employer. Love it. It resulted in a few chapter re-writes, but damn I have to say it reads really well. I was struggling with the attraction level of my H/h and adding strong independence and confidence traits has put these two characters in interesting opposition to each other.
[By the way...No woman would wear any of the outfits in this video to work, with the exception of Gabrielle Union's outfit which was super hot, but relatively tame. And OMG all the drooooool worthy shoes! I loved EVERY pair :) Those I would wear anywhere. To work, the grocery store, the bowling alley, mowing my lawn, walking the dog, fighting crime, whatever!]
Yes I know its not revolutionary to make the female character the boss, however, when creating characters fleshing out their backgrounds and personality traits is incredibly important when it comes to establishing the connections and attractions between characters. While listening to Miss Independent I realized that the personality and traits I've established with my hero, would never really fall for anyone who couldn't challenge him on the same or greater level of power that he possess. Hence my new Miss Independent heroine.
I'm excited to see where these two go with each other and how they'll find they're way to love. How do you feel about the gutsy, independent heroine? Have you ever beem surprised by how your H/h find their way to attraction and love? Let me know your thoughts.

And The Winners Are. . .

So not only have I been crazy busy, I've also apparently forgotten how to schedule posts properly in Blogger (my bad).
The winners for my Busy, Busy, Busy post are Sandy and Stephanie. Yes I know that there was only supposed to be one winner, but since I only had a few commenters I figured, why not share the love :)
I'll be sending out a follow emails shortly to the winners.
Talk to you soon,
Laurel

Persuasion Skills, Lists, Reviews and More

Happy Saturday! So as I mentioned in my previous post, I've been busy running around the internet promoting my new book, Persuasion Skills . First and foremost I'd like to thank all of you who've taken the time to purchase and read this book. The feedback I've received has been fantastic.
Thanks to readers both purchasing and enjoying this book I'm happy to announce that Persuasion Skills made several best seller lists!
During its debut month it made the All Romance bestseller list as well as two romance category best seller lists on Amazon. It was even given a four star review by The Romance Reviews! And as much as I told myself I wouldn't stalk the Goodreads and Amazom reviews (don't know what I was thinking), I've also received some lovely reviews from all of you readers and they have just made this hectic period so worth it.
I was originally planning a virtual release party for mid July, but that obviously did not happen. My schedule just wouldn't allow for it. However, I am still planning an official virtual tour via Bewitching Book Tours scheduled for September 9th that includes some pretty kick ass prizes so I hope you follow along.
I'll be announcing all of the tour stops soon and the lot of prizes.
Thank you all again for making the debut of Persuasion Skills such a great success!
Talk to you soon,
Laurel
