My Interview with Emelia Hayes!

Emelia HayesGood Morning All!

The lovely Emelia Hayes was gracious enough to interview me on her blog today. You can check out the interview here.

I'm super excited about the interview and had a great time doing it. Emelia is a writer herself and was an excellent host. Check out her website (http://emeliahayes.blogspot.com.au/) and her latest release, Taste on Amazon. Trust me when I say it's a scorcher.

Casual Smex Fridays

Hello Lovelies,
In my quest to learn more about the world of romance writing and publishing, I've been fortunate enough to have met some amazing readers, writers and bloggers via Goodreads, Twitter and Facebook and other interweb tube routes. In honor of all of these great contacts I've decided to institute Casual Smex Friday's. Each Friday I will share with you an excerpt from a new book a new or upcoming author. If you'd like to be featured please message me via laurelcremant@gmail.com
The whole process of being a new self-pubbed author is grueling. Getting the word out about your books takes a lot of time, effort and oftentimes just plain old luck and word of mouth. I've been really lucky that my sales have been relatively steady since I released Negotiating Skills and slowly but surely it's gaining traction. Don't get me wrong I would kill (almost but not really) for review sites to post about it. But I'm biding my time. I've already submitted it for review to several (as in a bazillion) sites and have been told that I'm in the "queue". I've also gotten some amazing feedback from readers so for now I'm quite content. All of that being said there is still A LOT that can still be done and I know that, but I'm not the only writer out there that would like to get their worked recognized and build a fan base.
So please stay tuned for the first Casual Smex Friday!

Negotiating Skills, New Excerpt

Good Evening Lovelies,

Today I was preparing some excerpts from Negotiating Skills for a guest blog post I'll be dong in a few weeks (more on that in another post) and decided to share. For those of you who haven't had a chance to read the book yet, enjoy!

Talk to you soon,
Laurel

Excerpt...

With her decision made, she straightened her back and locked her gaze firmly onto Victor’s cold green eyes. “I won’t sleep with you,” she said calmly. “I don’t believe I asked for that pleasure,” he replied, quirking his eyebrow in a way that Veronica was finding increasingly annoying. She pressed her lips together firmly. He was behaving like a jackass. She couldn’t believe that she had spent all that time fantasizing about such a ruthless jerk.“And no one else will be aware of this…arrangement except the two of us,” she continued.“I’ve never been one to discuss private business matters with outside parties,” he said with a slight smile playing across his lips.“Fine,” she said as she dropped her gaze from his and reached into her purse to pull out a pen. She pulled the contract forward and signed the bottom page with hands she fought to keep steady from shaking. After she placed the pen down, she couldn’t prevent her hands from clutching tightly on the cool glass top of Victor’s desk. She pulled in a shaky breath and raised her gaze back to his. She kept her eyes steady on him as she pushed back her chair and began to raise her skirt.“Not so fast,” he said harshly, his words halting her movement.Veronica let her skirt fall back down to her knees. For a split second, Veronica again thought that Victor had changed his mind, but his eyes remained cold and she knew that wasn’t the case.“The deal is that you would show me yours, so come here,” he said gesturing to his side of the desk.If it weren’t for his cold gaze Veronica almost believed that his voice had grown huskier. She locked her knees to keep them from trembling as she made her way around his desk.“Continue,” he said when she reached his chair. She watched and struggled hard not to reach out and slap his smirking face as he leaned back in his chair and rested his folded hands across his flat stomach.Veronica felt her knees tremble and her stomach quaver at his focused stare and tried not to let her surprise at her body’s reaction show. As pissed off as she was at his demands, it seemed as if her body had yet to receive the message that the recent object of her obsession had turned from a sexy crush to an arrogant ass. Even now standing in front of him about to submit to his ludicrous demand, she couldn’t keep a warm flush from spreading throughout her body and a lick of desire settle in her stomach. She didn’t know who she was angrier with at this point, herself for being so aroused, or Victor for putting her in such a demeaning position. “Sometime this century please,” he said arrogantly. He no longer looked in her eyes. Instead he kept his eyes fixed squarely below her waist. Steeling herself against the need to physically hurt him, Veronica kept her gaze trained on him as she clasped her skirt in her fists and pulled it up to her waist. She saw Victor stiffen and hoped that he was just as uncomfortable as she was. She held her skirt up with one hand and reached down to hook her fingers into the hip of her blue lace thong with the other. She paused only briefly before pulling it down over her lips and releasing her fingers to let the patch of lace pool at her feet. She was about to smooth her skirt back down over her hips when Victor’s hands reached forward in a flash and grabbed her hips firmly in his hands.“I gave you more than just a few seconds worth of a look last night,” he said huskily. “I’m pretty sure I’m owed more than just a quick peek now,” he said as he moved her over slightly. Veronica felt the cool glass top of his desk graze her ass as he shifted her over. Her muscles felt frozen. The moment his hands clasped her hips she felt such a rush of heat she was afraid to speak. It burned so quickly, she struggled to keep it from fogging up her mind completely. She stood quietly, locked in a shocked haze of heat, as his hands leaned her back against his desk. The movement caused her legs to splay open slightly, just enough to give him a full view of her pussy. His thumbs stroked across her hips and down slowly to the crease of her inner thighs. He kept his touch light, his fingers never touching the aching juncture between her legs. “I wouldn’t have figured you for the clean shaven look,” he murmured.

New Excerpt From HTKYI

Good Evening Lovelies

I'm having fun setting up the line up for my next releases. Getting them ready for your reading pleasure so to speak. Just to let you know that I haven't forgotten you all, below is new a quick excerpt from How To Kill Your Immortal...

Talk To You Soon,
Laurel

  Excerpt...

“How do you want to handle this?” he asked.

Dante turned his head slightly and looked at Jasmine, his gaze running over her angry features. She was seething and still struggling against his grip on her wrist, tugging forcefully to no avail. He could tell that one way or the other he would have to tell Jasmine the complete truth tonight. However, at that moment he was more concerned with keeping her safe.

“I’ll take care of it,” he said his lips tightening into a grim line.

“Just finish the Frederick case and get your ass to the penthouse as soon as you can,” glancing back at Jasmine he said, “Bring in the Brothers in for extra security.”

His statement was greeted with quiet. He could hear the grim acceptance in the silence floating through the phone line.

The Brothers were Dante’s soldiers of last resort. They were difficult to control, almost impossible to defeat and had a loyalty for Dante that even death could not break. Whenever Dante chose to use them in security it was not for negotiations or treaties—it was with the full knowledge that only corpses would be left behind.

“Shit man, this is going to be one hell of a ride,” said Elijah laughing as Dante ended the call.

Dante placed the cell phone back in his pocket and took a deep breath, silently counting to ten, before turning to focus back on Jasmine. He fought to hold back a cringe when he saw her smiling. A smiling pissed off Jasmine, was a dangerous Jasmine. Her ruthlessness was sadly one of the things he loved about her. He acknowledged to himself that it made him either a fool in love or a masochist.

“Darling,” she said sweetly, leaning towards him.

“Yes love?” said Dante, baiting her and stalling the conversation he knew they should have.

“If you don’t tell me what’s the hell is going on. I’m going to ask Marisol to show me every possible way there is to skin your balls and make you watch,” she said, an unholy and completely serious gleam lighting her eyes.

He was about to respond to her saccharine laced threat, when he caught a whiff on incense in the air. He stiffened as he turned his head slightly to narrow down the scent. The faint smell of sulfur was the only warning he got before the semi-permanent form of a wraith materialized next to him.

He was barely able to get out a warning shout before the wraith solidified and sent a blast of air hurling towards Jasmine.

Dante drew Jasmine into his chest, whirling them both around until he slammed her into the foyer wall.

He cursed loudly as he felt the heat and force of the power blast graze across his back as it flew by them. In the few moments that it took Dante to press Jasmine against the wall his mind and all of his senses raced to assess the situation.

The smell of sulfur was strong now, signaling that the wraith had used a good amount of its energy to produce the powerful blast. It would take several seconds for it to recharge. He waited until he heard the blast crash against the far wall before lifting his body away from Jasmine’s. As he was about to turn towards the threat of the wraith he felt Jasmine’s arms slide into his suit jacket and wrap around his back pulling him close. Just as he murmured quick words of assurance, for her not to worry, he felt her hands slide his two throwing knives from their sheath at the base of his back. He quirked an eyebrow at her and she quirked one of her own right back.

“You’re the immortal one here remember,” she said, “A girl has to know when to even her odds.”

Dante just shook his head at her brazenness and thought it was no wonder the fates had decided to make her his mate.

They both turned and faced the threat of the wraith together. Elijah was right, thought Dante, it really was going to be one hell of a ride.

The Role of Setting in Romance

Hello Lovelies,
Some one asked me the other day, how do I decide on the location and settings for my books. How do I decide where I'm going to place my characters and where they're going to go throughout the course of the stories? I was surprised at how difficult it was for me to answer these seemingly simple questions. I live in Miami, so I do tend to place my characters in the South Florida region. However, I've also spent time in both Southern California and New York City. In all honesty sometimes I consider my setting or location as a secondary character, and sometimes I use it as a tool to drive my characters together in other instances I barely give it a thought.I let the characters personalities and situations dictate the setting for me.
In Negotiating Skills, I barely describe any of the locations with the exception of Victor's office. That is where I wanted all of the action to occur, so that was the setting/location that I describe in more detail. In all of other scenes I wanted the readers focus to be completely centered on the attraction and tension between the H/H. However, I felt deliberately increased the level of description of Victor's office because I felt it actually added to the tension or sensuality of those scenes.
Conversely my characters in HTKYI definitely get around town. In this instance I chose to use the city of Miami and some of it's landmarks as a type of secondary character. I use everything from the heaviness of the humid air to the vibrant colors of South beach to paint a picture of the world Dante and Jasmine live in. I felt that this level of description added to story instead of taking away from it.
Currently I'm working on another novella that takes place completely in a one room cabin in the heart of the Colorado mountains (definitely a whole world away from Miami). When I was originally inspired to write this story I planned on the cabin being an actual large home in the mountains. However, by the time I got through the first chapter I realized that there was no way my hero was going to get his way unless he broke down some of my heroine's boundaries, so I had to break a few walls in the process to make that happen. For this novella there is literally nowhere to hide and I'm using that as a tool to build both tension and closeness between my H/H.
After trying to explain this to my friend who asked the question that prompted this post I began to really analyze some of my most recent favorite romance novels. Each author used location and setting in different ways. In Karen Marie Moning's Fever series her locations are definitely characters in her novels. They add to each and every scene and enhance them tenfold. I can't imagine reading that series without the description of Barron's bookstore or the ever darkening city of Dublin (unless there were more naked Barrons scenes that is, hmmmmm Barrons). I recently read Nia K. Foxx's Gargoyle's Mate and loved the description of Lorn's castle. I think it helped not only add to his character description but add to the gargoyle lore Foxx created in the story.
When it comes to books there are so many subtleties to what goes into writing something that pulls a reader in and doesn't jarringly drop them. As a writer I tend to let storyline and characters dictate my setting and in the end don't realize what I've done with it until I'm done with a scene. How often do we as readers discount setting and location unknowingly? Just a little chocolate for thought for your Wednesday afternoon!

Recent Mood Music

Usher, Lemme SeeHi All,
So I recently posted the playlist I had on repeat pretty much through out the writing of "Negotiating Skills" a week or so ago. As I finish up HTKYI and the beginning scenes of my next project I've been rocking out two several playlists and in each one I've included Usher's Lemme See. This song is all sorts of yum! The lyrics happen to be right on par with some of my characters so it's been a great mood setter.
Music has such a calming and focusing effect for me. I can't imagine working without it! There have been a few times when I need absolute silence, but that is usually for very solemn scenes and in those cases silence itself becomes a form of music for me. Anywhoo, I've embedded the video for the song for your listening and viewing pleasure. I had this song on loop when I wrote a particularly scrumptious scene between Dante and Jasmine in HTKYI. There are just so many awesomely naughty things about the song and video that I can't help but love it!

A Brief Moment In Time

Hi All,

For a brief moment in time today I cracked 20,000 in Amazon's Sales Rank. It was a very brief moment, but a moment nonetheless and I took a moment of my own to screen shot it and do a little happy dance. It was somewhat awkward considereing I was at work at the time and my boss happened to walk through the my door in the middle of my dance, nut the awkward moment was totally worth it!

Things like this totally make my day. I know for some this may not seem like a big deal, but it was a huge milestone for me. Especially being a self-published author. Anyway I'm off to bask in the glow of a moment long #16,539 .

Talk to you soon,
Laurel

All Romance (ARe) Survey

Hello Lovelies,

All Romance (ARe) has a survey on their website geared towards learning more about how authors and readers use their website.

"We released an anonymous survey today over at  AllRomance.com   in hopes of discovering more about how readers discover, access, and read eBooks. We're specifically exploring some issues around DRM and sharing. You can take the survey just by going to our home page (it will pop up, no registration required). We'd appreciate it if you can mention the survey to your authors and readers. We're hoping for a large turn out and plan to share/present the results. It's been up for about two hours and we have close to 500 responses so far. The more respondents the better!"

If you have a few minutes, please head on over to ARe and fill out the survey. As mentioned above the survey should pop up as soon as you go to the main page.

Talk To You Soon,
Laurel
