How to Complete your WGU Degree: 5 Tips for Success

I received a question from Karl through my Contact Me link asking forrecommendations as he begins his journey with Western Governors University (WGU). Since I have completed my Masters of Science in Information Security and Assurance through WGU, I was more than happy to help a future alumni out with tips from my own experience. I asked Karl if he would mind if I posted the content of my response here and he was gracious enough to permit me to do so. (Thanks, Karl!!!)

I’m a new student to WGU...

Chlorophyllium 9 – Looking for Artwork

I did it. I finally finished a short story that has been evading me for seven years now. Chlorophyllium 9 has been a very special project for me, challenging me in so many ways as an author. Seven years, has it really been so long?

Well. Here we are. I must now decide whether to pursue traditional publication for this short, as I’d originally intended, or find someone who can create a beautiful cover for this long overdue story. So, if you or someone you know is looking to get their artwork o...

Why Self-Publishing was the Only Option for Me – Guest Post by Ashley R. Carlson

Today’s guest post comes from a fellow author I met via Twitter last year, the talented Ashley R. Carlson – Author of The Charismatics (The Charismatics Series).I’ve personally felt very inspired by Ashley’s tenacity in her quest to become a successful author. With that, I proudly introduce to you, Ashley R. Carlson as she discusses why self-publishing was the only option for her.

Ashley R. Carlson, Author
I am a self-published author, with a short story and novel under my belt so far, and this is my journey.

When I...

Breaking Through Writer’s Block

Are you stuck in your writing? A smidge of writers’ block got you down? Yeah, me too.

Ioftenface the difficulty of self-doubt and apprehension with my writing. The words on the page insult me. I feel like such an idiot with language. My thoughts are sluggish and the story begins to look like a sham. I’m a constant self-editor. I don’t often finish a product that needs much work because I can’t stop working it to death in the process. This makes for slow writing and a lot of bad feelings.

In my...

Should You Self-Publish and the Future of Writing

Many authors consider the option of self publishing on numerous online platforms rather than spending months or even years to see their words in print via the traditional query and slush methods. Some traditionalists mightimmediately defend the process of sending copy after copy of one’s manuscript (and waiting months on end to find they’d have better spent their efforts elsewhere). “A rite of passage,” they’d call it, to separate the chaff from the grain, as it were. The idea has merits, for...

Eating Jackfruit – A Sticky Adventure

A few years ago we made a trip to a very large Asian market. We took the opportunity to buy some interesting candies and assorted ingredients for cooking. It’s a great way to get some exposure to other cultures and try new things. One such adventure came in the form of a large fruit that looked like a cross between a large watermelon and a porcupine. This melon-ish object is known as a jackfruit and it was unlike anything I’d ever seen before. I couldn’t resist. I gave my wife that mischievou...

Getting Published – Guest Post by Ben Marble

Today’s guest post comes from a fellow writer and an old friend, Ben Marble. I can’t remember when we met, exactly, but weboth worked at an amusement park during our teenage years. I believe Ben was a member of the Rides staff, while I did my time slinging Games since I was too young to be trusted with the safety of ride-goers. Either way, we would often ride in on the trolley and share odd conversations. We later attended Clearfield High School together.

So you decided to become a writer. The...

9 Acres – Changing the Setting

We moved to Texas just a few short months ago and we’re still getting used to our new surroundings. The change has come with many joys and heartaches. We have made fond new memories and lamented the losses of many things we took for granted back in Utah. (Convenient shopping for certain items, for example. Fast Internet service without a bandwidth limit that we ever managed to hit, as another.) There have been a few unpleasant surprises, like running out of propane. And the recent devastating...

Endless Possibilities – Reflections of Self

“I think I can. I think I can.” -The little engine who could.

We all struggle with our own doubts and demons. As life goes ever onward, we amass a selection of guilt and regret. The gift of life with its endless possibilities becomes clouded with misgivings of what we are unable to do. The further you move away from your dreams, the more turbulent life’s waters become.

When was the last time you looked into a mirror and saw a portal of endless possibilities?

I struggle with this, myself. It’s a problem. As a writer, confidence is a big part of the creative process. Turning off self-d...
