Musical Theatre Monday – Merrily We Roll Along’s Anniversary
Since it’s a holiday week, we’ll resume our regular posts next Monday. However, Merrily We Roll Along, the musical that plays a huge role in The Reece Malcolm List, celebrated the 31st anniversary of its Broadway opening last week, and Playbill ran some amazing features.
Check out the insanely in-depth photo and video galleries.
And we’ll be back next week! Happy Thanksgiving, US friends!

Musical Theatre Monday – Elisabeth Geier on Newsies
It’s Monday! Mondays are kinda dopey, I know. But the good news is that means it is Musical Theatre Monday, and, even better, someone delightful has joined us.* That’s right, it’s Elisabeth Geier!
ELISABETH GEIER: I don’t know much about musicals. I’m familiar with the big ones, sure; as a kid, I loved The Music Man and The Sound of Music. As a teenager, like a lot of teenagers, I got really into Rent. In high school, I auditioned for a production of Guys and Dolls and was cast as a member of...

Musical Theatre Monday – J. Holtham on Elegies: A Song Cycle
It’s Monday, and around these parts that means it’s Musical Theatre Monday. This week I am incredibly happy to welcome J. Holtham to the blog. So I am gonna let the man get to it.
J. HOLTHAM: When I get some fancy new way to play music, one of the first things that winds up on there is the cast recording of William Finn’s Elegies. (There’s also a whole of The Hold Steady and the Replacements, so don’t get the wrong impression (or the right one, I suppose…shut up.).) I don’t know that I would s...

BRIAN FARREY:
I.
So, there’s a scene in the movie Jeffrey where the title character goes to a church, looking for answers to the meaning of life, and is propositioned by a priest.
Great way to start an essay, n’est–ce pas?
Anyway, in trying to help Jeffrey, the priest holds up the oxriginal cast album for...

Musical Theatre Monday – Nick Weber on West Side Story
Today for Musical Theatre Monday I am happy to welcome writer Nick Weber.
NICK WEBER: When people talk about musical productions done in High Schools, most probably have fond memories of easy-to-digest shows usually set in an “American” or “Youth” context or a combination of both, like, say, Bye Bye Birdie!, Grease!, Oklahoma! (yes a show with an exclamation point is usually prerequisite, unless you do The Music Man). As always, there MUST be a happy/uplifting ending, because, it’s a musical,...
