Dear Ames: Top Ten Awkward Celebrity Encounters (10-6)

My fantastic friend Kevin asked me to explore a fascinating topic here:

Abso-frigging-lutely. I will definitely blind-item these, though, because I think we'll all feel better about it. (Feel free to guess in comments but I shall neither confirm nor deny.)

10. Once I was walking around Larchmont and saw EMMY-AWARD WINNING ACTRESS filming a bit for a talk show which involved her dressed similarly to Grizabella the Glamour Cat and rolling around on a park bench. It was the saddest thing I have...

Twenty-Five Things about Me (that Will Change Your Life)

the author in a contemplative
I am afraid of fish, especially when they are in aquariums. When I eat sushi I get really happy because it's like I'm winning.Even though I am from St. Louis I have never been up in the Arch, and I never will.I really hate the word "fixins".However many Diet Cokes you think I drink per day, I drink at least one more.I think pandemics are super fascinating. The first dream I can remember was set at a doctor's office, where a doctor had a scan of my brain...

Dear Ames: Zac’s Facial Hair

My awesome friend Liz sought my opinion on an important matter via Twitter:

I am really glad Liz reached out! This has definitely been ON MY MIND.

Well, Liz, I do not like facial hair that looks like a man painted on a fake beard with Vaseline and then rolled around in cocoa powder.

I hope that answers your question.

P.S. Obviously I will go see this movie.

P.P.S. If you have important questions for me, don’t be afraid to submit them!

Writing! It's a Thing I Do!

Whenever I hear other writers talking about creativity, they say really lovely things. It's always like, "My creativity is a beautiful butterfly spreading the wings of story, and it sweeps its colors across the sky of my prose."

But this is NEVER EVER NEVER how I feel about writing. It stresses me out and I hate trying to figure out plot (vs. snarky conversation and swoony making out) and for some reason I can never remember that first drafts are supposed to suck and I should never compare...

Happy Birthday, Stephen Sondheim! GET OFF THE INTERNET AND GO OUTSIDE.

A lot of people have influenced me, because that's how life rolls, but perhaps the writer whose words, stories, and mindset has done the most for my little Ames brain is Stephen Sondheim. He's probably the closest thing to a deity I have.

AND TODAY IS HIS BIRTHDAY.

Now, look. I hope Stephen Sondheim is doing something cool and arty, like having a private viewing of a painting at a museum, or something surprising, like WHO KNEW HIS FRIENDS WOULD MAKE HIM A GIANT ICE CREAM SUNDAE, or maybe he's j...

Dream Pets!

I have some really great pets. You guys, they're so great! I know everyone says that about their pets, but for me IT IS TRUTHFUL.

If you doubt me, check these guys out:

But despite their greatness, I have DREAM PETS.

Firstly, aiming kiiiind of low? A Corgi:

There's nothing like big heads and short legs!!!

Also wouldn't it be cool if I had a backyard and my backyard had an aquatic area just so I could have… OTTERS?

I used to have a dream where a magical stoat was my friend and would fetch me...

Bet on It

Hello, world. This is my first blog post. Not, like, EVER. Just here! So, welcome. If you're trembling in anticipation, well, I suggest you chill a little.

A few weeks ago, I had the flu, and also the latest rejection on my manuscript. Gentle readers, I felt a lot like this:

Well, like that, but I'm not handsome.

But then, lo and behold, a magical email arrived, followed by some magical phone calls. Dear friends, it wasn't just that someone apparently loved my book The Reece Malcolm List, no...
