Musical Theatre Monday – Merrily We Roll Along Encores Cast Recording
One reason–other than that, duh, I love musical theatre not exactly in general but way more than specifically–I’ve been running the Musical Theatre Monday series is ramping up for the release of The Reece Malcolm List which features a production of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. I mean, as much as a book can “feature” a musical.
I’ll be discussing Merrily A LOT more as February approaches, because it’s not just the musical in my book, it’s a musical I care a lot about. I’ve wiled aw...

Would Beyoncé Be Reading This?
You may have already seen my friend Stephanie Perkins’ post about this. I hope you have! For Steph’s post is wonderful, and also it has a lot of stuff about ME and MY BOOK. Hey, those are two topics I like, guys.
But also I hope you saw this quote from one of my heroes, Kathleen Hanna:
Beyoncé isn’t Beyoncé because she reads comments on the Internet. Beyoncé is in Ibiza, wearing a stomach necklace, walking hand in hand with her hot boyfriend. She’s going on the yacht and having a mimosa. She’s...

Musical Theatre Monday: Emma Fyffe on Chess
This week I am thrilled to welcome the delightful and talented Emma Fyffe as our guest bloggist! I’ll be honest: this was a tough one for me because I love this musical so effing much in such a complicated way that I assumed I’d get around to writing about it myself. But this was the musical Emma wanted to tackle, so tackle she did.
EMMA FYFFE: From ages 11 to 17, every summer, I attended a performing arts camp at a college in Fairfield, CT. The shows we put on at the end of each camp session...

Two Malcolms, Two Lists
I just discovered that this book exists!:
Holy crap!
(That second one is mine, FYI.)
So now that I know this similarity exists, I’d like to let you know the differences between The Reece Malcolm List and Mr. Malcolm’s List (which I have not read, but I’ve read its Amazon page, so that’s basically the same, right?).
Mr. Malcolm’s List‘s titular list is about a dude Malcolm. The Reece Malcolm List’s is about a lady Malcolm.
Mr. Malcolm’s List is a farce of historic proportions. The Reece Malcolm Lis...

Being a Lady
Hi, guys. I’m a lady. You probably know this already. But if not, it’s true! I’m not a dude.
I used to find this a little troubling. I mean, I didn’t want to be a dude. But I wanted some of the freedom dudes seemed – to my young eyes – to possess. They could look at a baby without someone shouting, “HEY YOU’LL HAVE ONE OF THOSE SOMEDAY!” (I found that a horrifying threat.) They could see a bride without someone saying, “ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT YOUR WEDDING YET?” (I was so scared I would have to...

Musical Theatre Monday – Jason Sheridan on The Music Man
Hey, it’s Musical Theatre Monday! Hey, I am psyched to welcome the charming and talented Jason Sheridan to the blog this week!
JASON SHERIDAN:Like most kids, the first bits of pop culture I was introduced to came from my parents. Little did they realize that I would gravitate towards a very specific sort of pop culture icon: old eccentric weirdos! Rod Serling, Alred Hitchcock, Lucille Ball, Orson Welles. There was just something about these long dead icons. Their big personalities, total confi...
