Weighted (The Neumarian Chronicles 0.5) byCiara Knight
Goodreads
Amazon
BLURB:
The Great War of 2185 is over, but my nightmare has just begun. I am being held captive in the Queen’s ship awaiting interrogation. My only possible ally is the princess, but I’m unsure if she is really my friend or a trap set by the Queen to fool me into sharing the secret of my gift. A gift I keep hidden even from myself. It swirls inside my body begging for release, but it is the one thing the Queen can never discover. Will I have the strength to keep the secret? I’ll know the answer soon. If the stories are true about the interrogators, I’ll either be dead or a traitor to my people by morning.
REVIEW:
Raeth, a young Neumarian, has been taken captive for interrogation, by the Queen of the Kantian's, in the first novella, Weighted, from the Neumarian Chronicles, by Ciara Knight.
Raeth has a special power, which she tries very hard not to allow the Neumarian's to discover. She endures horrific torture to keep her secret, as the Queen endorses implants to be attached to her body.
First her leg is removed without any sedatives or other medications and is replaced with a metallic prosthetic. To Raeth's horror, this now makes her a slag, and sadly she fears she will no longer be accepted by her people, if she is lucky enough to survive the Queens ongoing torture and return home.
Incredibly, she finds a friend in Princess Semara, the Queens daughter, who risks everything to try to save Raeth.
This short novella, by Ciara Knight, is an imaginative steam punk story, based in a futuristic world, with strong believable characters and graphic descriptions of the horror Raeth faces during her torture. Weighted, takes its readers into a harsh world, filled with fear of a Queen who is infatuated with replacing body parts into mechanical devices. Ciara has produced a story which sends shivers down ones spine, thinking of the agony the MC endures by her captives.

BLURB:
Raven is a clockwork boy, created for a childless queen. But something has gone very wrong in his creation, for he has no feelings. Rejected by his mother, sent to the crystal mines, Raven has no fear, no anger, and no hope. But his maker has been looking for him, bearing three dangerous gifts. If Raven accepts them, he will never be the same again. Based on the fairytale of Snow White.
It includes a bonus short story, "The Truth", a retelling of the fairytale of Rumpelstiltskin.
REVIEW:
This short Clockpunk story by Chrysalla Thoma tells a tale of the Unfinished Boy, a prince named Raven, who shows no feelings, when his father dies.
We learn during the story, he is unable to feel, due to the fact that his father had stolen him from his maker before his completion.
Upon his father's death, his mother the Queen, sends him to the Crystal mines, to punish him for not showing his love for his dead father. Raven finds his heart when a mysterious, beautiful girl visits him, on visitors day.
This story is quite unusual and is entwined with magic of clockwork creatures, in a fantasy world, similar in nature to an old fashioned fairytale.

BLURB:
When King of the Texas Empire kidnaps Warren's brother, Warren embarks into a still Wild West to save him. On his journey, he makes a discovery that changes his life forever—he and his brother are long-lost members of the Texas royal family and the King wants them both dead.
He gets help from an activist Texan named Lena, who's itching to take on the King and happens to be a beautiful firecracker Warren can't stay away from. Convincing her he's not one of the bad guys becomes harder when a mysterious energy stirs in his body, turning his brain into a hive of emotions and memories—not all his own.
A legacy of violence is not all he inherited from the brutal Kings of Texas. The myth that the royal family possesses supernatural powers may not be myth at all.
Gone are the days when choosing a major was a big deal. Now Warren must save his brother and choose whether or not to be King, follow a King, or die before he can retire his fake ID.

EXCERPT:
Chapter One
When Warren arrived outside his mother's apartment, he saw Luke Skywalker's face plastered against the window. For some reason, his mother had taped his old Star Wars comforter over the patio glass. He didn't pause too long to wonder why. His mother suffered from what his brother called severe eccentricity, a condition that sometimes included blacking out windows with old sheets for no obvious reason.Warren always came home when his mother asked, in part because she tended to do things like make bacon in the toaster and start fires. However, if she called him today for anything less than a toaster fire, he would head right back to campus to enjoy the first day after finals the way he had intended to—drunk and poolside. He wiped his feet like his mother taught him, even though the revolting brown carpeting didn't show much. He kind of missed the crappiness of the apartment he grew up in, although he didn't know why, because crappy also described his new apartment in Eugene. Still, to him, home smelled like pine trees intermingled with pool chlorine and exhaust from the laundry room. His mother stood in the kitchen beside their yellow nineteen-eighties stove and a refrigerator that always looked too small next to Warren and his other too-tall family members. She held a box of uncooked spaghetti and didn't respond to his presence right away. The box of spaghetti looked worn and crushed, as if his mother had stood there and squeezed the box for a while. The wrinkle between her eyes had grown deeper, and a few more strands of gray had found their way into her waist-length black hair.Warren took the box of spaghetti out of her hands."I will make you dinner," she said."I'm not hungry."Two Red Bulls churned in Warren's hungover and now worried stomach."What's wrong?" he asked. Please don't say cancer. At six-foot-five, Warren had grown too tall for most childish things, but losing his mama still felt like the worst thing that could possibly happen."It's Isaac," she said.Warren's hands began to sweat."What's wrong with him?"Okay, maybe losing his little brother felt like the worst thing that could possibly happen. His mother took Warren by the hand and led him into their apartment's only bedroom. She had slept on the couch for fourteen years, and Warren and Isaac had shared this room. A bleach-stained towel hung over a broken window. Through the gap, Warren saw the courtyard full of pine trees where they had played as kids—the courtyard where Isaac collected specimens to look at under his microscope while Warren hit mud balls with his baseball bat.Glass surrounded a brownish-red smudge on the carpet. Blood."What is this?" Warren asked."Someone took him."Warren's breath caught in his throat."He came home to visit. Said he felt sick. I tried to get off work, but I couldn't find anyone to cover my shift." Her voice took on a higher, more urgent pitch. "When I came home, he was gone.""You mean someone actually broke in and took him?""Yes.""He's sixteen years old and freaking six-foot-four. You don't just abduct a guy like that for no reason. What the hell for?"She shook her head, her eyes on the spot of blood."Did you call the police?" His voice got higher and louder too."Yes, I called 9-1-1, like you told me to for an emergency. Isaac put the numbers on the phone so I wouldn't forget. They came and asked me questions and took pictures.""What did the police say?" Warren asked."Just to call if anything new happens.""It doesn't make sense. He's nice to everyone. Keeps his head down. This is bullshit." He realized he had yelled. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to curse.""It's okay."Warren knelt to get a better look at the blood smudge, careful to avoid the glass. His mother sat on the floor next to him and took his hand.He didn't notice his hand shook until she held it firmly. She pulled him into a hug and squeezed tightly."I love you," she said."I know. I love you, too, Mom.""I think you should go.""What? No. I'm not going anywhere." She got confused at the grocery store on her best days. She needed him now. And he needed her."They'll come for you, too," she said in a near-whisper.He pulled away from her. "What aren't you telling me?""Nothing. I'm just worried. I don't want to lose you, too."She didn't lie well, and only one topic caused her to act this evasive."Does this have anything to do with my father?"She paused for what seemed like a full minute, and then finally gave the same answer she always gave when they asked about their father."No. Your father is dead. He died in Waterloo when the bomb hit Texas."

The pen is truly mightier than the deadliest sword.
Martin Smith and John Becker: bestselling authors with ordinary names and extraordinary minds.
Their words have power — to heal, to kill, to change the lives of their “characters” in shocking and unexpected ways. Famous for their uncanny similarity in both physical manner and literary voice, their childhood rivalry spins out of control into adulhood.
The death of one at the hands of the other brings to light their troubling past — and a mysterious presence, watching on from the shadows — an authorial entity with roots beyond our time or dimension; an entity with far-reaching designs.
REVIEW:
Although The Green Eyed Monster is not the type of book I would normally read, it held my interest and I enjoyed the story.
This book by Mike Robinson, delves into the areas of evil, with a supernatural concept, involving butterflies and the dark forces of what I presume, is the devil.
The story ventures into the human psyche, exploring the reasons for the choices humans make at the different crossroads in their lives, giving an explanation as to why a certain pathway is chosen, questioning fate.
The Green Eyed Monster starts with a scene involving a murder investigation, which leads into introducing the various characters involved in the story, divulging how their lives are entwined and directed by the manipulation of a dark force, working behind the scenes.
This book by Mike Robinson, is well written and holds the attention of its reader through to the end. The Green Eyed Monster is a very different read, and I would certainly recommend it.

BLURB:
The journey into adulthood is stranger than she expects.
Graduation from community college isn’t the magic elixir Hetty Locklear counts on for becoming an adult. Her parents, who work the Renaissance fair circuit, insist she spend part of the summer with them. Hetty doubts pretending to live in the Middle Ages will help her find her way.
To make it worse, an entity haunts her at her dead-end job, warning her of a dangerous man she doesn’t know. The ghost leads her to a lover who has a lot of secrets. He pulls her farther into peril and into a strange, hidden world of genetic experimentation.
New Adult Contemporary Fantasy with a Contemporary Sci-fi twist. Some mature content.
REVIEW:
This book by M. Pax took me by surprise, and was very different than what I expected it to be, (in a good way).
The Renaissance of Hetty Loklear, is based on the life of a recently graduated college student, who due to her insecurities, prefers to live her life as an avatar, in the fantasy world she has created.
Hetty's life is turned upside down, when she partakes on a journey to visit her estranged parents, who travel the Renaissance circuit. Strange events start to take place around her, when she finds herself caught up in more than a video game.
Hetty is a believable character, who finds herself and gains her self confidence as the story progresses and most female readers, who are honest, would certainly relate to her as a person. This supernatural fantasy, has a few twists and readers are kept guessing of the outcome, right up to the end. Quite an enjoyable read and worth adding to your TBR list.

BLURB:
A demon-like creature has possessed Sunshine’s body since the day she was born. Now, seventeen years later, she is done watching from the outside while the Intruder wrecks her life. When the opportunity arises to reclaim her body, she takes it.
Finally back in her body, Sunshine is arrested and, with her mother’s approval, sent to a mental institution where Intruders abound. Sunshine must learn who she is, take charge of her life, fight the Intruders, and look sane while doing it.
REVIEW:
This intriguing story by Beth Winokur, is a very different paranormal tale. Sunshine After Darkness, tells how the soul of Sunshine, has been trapped outside of her body since birth, when a dark 'intruder' inhabits the body, meant to be hers, and blocks her entry.
When the body named Rose turns 17, the 'intruder' causes mayhem and mischief, instigating her mother to commit her to a psychiatric ward.
The 'intruder' leaves Rose's body to Sunshine, who then needs to learn how to operate it, as she is left to suffer the indignation and degradation of being locked away!
Sunshine slowly discovers the secrets of the 'intruders' and learns how to survive within the psychiatric facility. She finds she is not alone in her predicament and that there are many more souls in the same situation she had been in, trapped outside of their bodies, watching 'intruders' living the lives meant to be theirs.
Finding friendship and support after being brutally treated inside the facility, she concludes she is not as vulnerable as she first believed and discovers the courage she needs, to take on the intruders and the controlling bodies of the facility.
Sunshine in the Darkness is a unusual story and quite different, touching quite a dark subject. Beth Winokur has put together a very unique read, which I am sure her readers will find intriguing and quite thought provoking.

REX CRESTING
BY CHRYSTALLA THOMA GoodreadsAmazon BLURB:
Still recovering at a hospital on the north coast of Dakru, Elei is convinced that his part in bringing down the Gultur is over. Rex has infected the other race and their dictatorial system is starting to collapse. Not every Gultur, though, has been affected, and on top of that, inside Elei's body, Rex has matured and goes through another transformation. Elei isn't sure he can survive Rex's new strength -- but that may prove the last of his worries as the Gultur descend on him again.
MY REVIEW:
Rex Cresting, the second book in this series by Chrystalla Thoma, continues Elei's battle with the Gultur and his own parasites, Rex and Chronion.
A new character is introduced from Hera's past, which the group of friends are divided between deciding whether she is friend or foe.
Sexual tension builds further between Elei and Hera, but Hera clings to the ways of her people, making it impossible for Elei to act upon his desires. Elei is also unsure whether his parasite 'Rex' is behind his desire and is controlling his feelings for some alternative purpose.
This book is an exciting and fast paced read from beginning to end, as Elei and his friends gather new information and piece together answers to the secrets of their world.

In a world where parasites create new human races, Elei leads a peaceful life — until a mysterious attack on his boss sends him fleeing with a bullet in his side. Pursued for a secret he does not possess and with the fleet at his heels, he has but one thought: to stay alive.
His pursuers aren’t inclined to sit down and talk, although that’s not the end of Elei’s troubles. The two powerful parasites inhabiting his body, at a balance until now, choose this moment to bring him down, leaving Elei with no choice but to trust in people he hardly knows. It won’t be long before he realizes he must find out this deadly secret — a secret that might change the fate of his world and everything he has ever known — or die trying.
MY REVIEW:
Rex Rising is the first installment of Elei's Chronicles by Crystalla Thoma, and is a fast paced sci-fi, telling the story of Elei, who is running for his life after his boss and mother figure is murdered in an attack, which takes place in front of his eyes.
They story is set in the future where food and water is scarce and a race of women rule society, with a heavy hand.
The people of this world are kept poor and almost destitute, while the ruling race live in luxury. Unbeknown to Elei, he holds the key to the future of this world as he desperately flees from his persuers.
I found the book a great read and the story quite unique. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes intrigue, sci-fi and espionage, packed into a mysterious setting.

MY REVIEW:
This short sci-fi story, by Ilona Andrews, is a fun read. The Questing Beast, is set on a distant planet, where Sean Kozlov; head of a team of scientists, is awaiting the arrival of the Committee, which will be visiting, to view his team's final data, collected from two years of research.
Unfortunately, for Sean and his team a virus has attacked their computer system and the data could be permanently lost.
This is a wacky story, filled with very strange happenings and imaginative creatures. I wouldn't be surprised if Ilona was experiencing a drug induced high; when she wrote this story, but this being said, it really is a quick, fun read!

PRINCE OF THE EARTHBY
MIKE ROBINSON
GoodreadsAmazon Barnes & Noble
BLURB:
In 1988, young American traveler Quincy Redding is trekking across the misty terrain of the Scottish Highlands. She is destined for the infamous peak Ben MacDui, the summit of which soon finds her inexplicably debilitated and at the mercy of a malevolent entity.
The book spans twenty years, alternately following Quincy in her 1988 ordeal in Scotland as well as Quincy in 2008, when, as an adult, she begins experiencing abnormalities that threaten her family and her life – phenomena that may be related to what happened all those years ago.
As both older and younger Quincy learn more of their situation, and as their worlds further entwine, she becomes increasingly uncertain of the perceived temporality or reality of each period.
MY REVIEW:
The Prince of the Earth, by Mike Robinson, is a unique read, jumping back and forwards in time to tell the life story of Quincy Redding. It travels back and forth from her present life, where she is a Computer Game Developer, to the period she travelled, as a young independent student, on her own across Europe and Scotland, it also entwines memories from her childhood.
This unusual tale is not an ordinary life story, big chunks of what Quincy believes are her memories disappear, along with objects and people from her past, even family members. It may be an hallucination, it also could be memory loss, but did some type of paranormal experience happen in the Scottish highlands when Quincy was camping alone on the mountain top, in the fog?
Mike Robinson has put together a very well written, adult read, filled with suspense and a twist of horror in which readers are kept guessing.

After a narrow escape, she learns a mystical secret about herself that could aide her in her fight against the vampires. Unfortunately, the vampires see her either as an asset or a target.
When the world is on the brink of complete social and technological destruction, one must ask themselves: Would I give up my blood for the modern ideal way of life, or will I risk my life and wage war with the overlords of chaos?
MY REVIEW:
Set in Hawaii, this short novel, Obsidian, by Kayla Curry deals with a vampire takeover of the island, when they organize to bring down technology and push Hawaii into chaos!
Ava Tanner, the MC in Obsidian, thinks she finds love, but is fortunate enough to learn her mistake, before she becomes too deeply involved.
The elements in this story are pleasantly surprising, and although somewhat farfetched add to the storyline. Kayla has put together a reasonable vampire story. Although, my thoughts would be that the book needs a little more editing, to make it a better read, I would not hold it against Kayla's capabilities, with this being her first book.

Basil's off-chance slip of the tongue binds him to a life of servitude to the Devourer, the master of hell. His existence has no upside until a chance meeting with Abigail brings new perspective.
Keeping the truth of their present lives from each other brings disaster when secrets are brought to light and the life of Abigail’s mentor is put on the line.
Can Abigail and Basil save her mentor and salvage their love amid the chaos? Or will they lose it all, destined forever to NEVERLOVE?
MY TEASER:
Darkness consumed Abigail. She’d known the consequences before making the first slice. Hallucination or not, the soul weavers were right. She’d chosen to take her life. Even though her soul was hell bound, Abigail hoped, with the last fiber of her being, that no matter what her mother tried, it was over.
