TIS Picks: 5 Top Music Videos

5 Top Videos on Music and Innovation

For the last month, we’ve looked at how innovation is changing (the) music (industry). Some fantastic examples have come forth out of the world of artificial intelligence: can you determine whether the piece is written by a human or generated by a computer? How does AI make creative decisions on melody and harmony? And what about adding Blockchain technology to the industry? The vision is that in the near future, you’ll be able to track the provenance of every track, buy concert tickets without having to worry about fraud and know for a fact that your favorite artists get the royalties they deserve. All made possible by Blockchain. However, in this TIS Picks I want to zoom on innovations that enhance the experience of (making) music.

1. Add soundtracks to books

Although authors often only need words to set the mood, Booktrack Studio now offers the possibility to add sound to your digital book. This way authors can decide to enhance the reading experience by adding ambient sounds to specific moments in the book.

Just watched TIS.tv: Booktrack Studio – Amplify Your Story

According to Erwin Blom ‟I’m intrigued with the possibilities of augmenting reality as you’re reading.”www.tis.tv

2. A wearable subwoofer

The watch-size Basslet is a wearable subwoofer that brings music and its beat straight to your body, instead of your ears. You can literally feel the bass of the music. And the cool thing is, people around you cannot sense it, so you can enjoy your guilty pleasure without disturbing anyone.

Just watched TIS.tv: The Basslet: the world’s first watch-size subwoofer for your body.

According to Elena L. ‟The Basslet is a wearable subwoofer for the body: strap it on and feel that bass!”www.tis.tv

3. Bring your drums everywhere you go

Swedish startup Freedrum has created a virtual drum kit that allows practicing drumming anywhere without disturbing anyone. The standard kit contains two sensors that can be attached to the drumsticks, the flow of natural movement is synchronized with the sound in the Garageband or similar apps on your iPhone.

4. Upload and play

The Dutch Chordify offers an amazing service for musicians. It can actually transfer a tune into the chords on paper, so you can immediately start practicing your favorite songs. Just select and YouTube link or upload a song, and go. They claim it to be ‘the karaoke for fingers’!

According to Simone de Bruin ‟Got a YouTube song you love? Upload its URL to Chordify and it will automatically extract…www.tis.tv

5. Compose music with gloves

British artist and song writer Imogen Heap is always experiencing with music. She founded Mycelia4music which helps artists protect their copyright with Blockchain. But she’s also the inventor of these Mu.Mi. gloves which serve as a new interface for music based on gestures.

How The Decline Of The College Degree Is Shaking Up The Workplace

It’s no secret that the class of 2017 graduated into extraordinary levels of debt. The current bill for student loan debt stands at $1.3 trillion across 44.2 million borrowers who each owe an estimated $37.172. It is generally assumed in life that if you want to get ahead then you need a college degree. While this is definitely true on an academic basis, on a financial level the prospects aren’t so appealing.

Is A College Education Still A Guaranteed Way To Succeed?

There’s no doubt about it that education is vitally important to the future of the modern world but is a degree really worth it anymore? Employers want skills as well as qualifications and there are some hugely sought after workplace skills that no amount of tuition fees can buy. The next generation of would-be college students are worldly-wise enough to know that graduating with a disproportionate amount of debt in relation to earnings is not a great start to adult life. It’s no surprise that more and more high school leavers are looking at other ways of getting on the corporate ladder such as internships and other forms of employment.

Help For Graduates Who Are Already In Debt

There are various lenders who are able to provide assistance with student loan repayments either by consolidating or completely refinancing. It is definitely possible for students to work their way out of student debt with the right financial assistance and several  years of hard work. For some professions a degree is absolutely essential. Doctors, lawyers and psychiatrists work in specialized fields where education is an essential stepping stone to success. More vocational subjects such as sports, languages and the arts tend to lead to careers were a degree is less essential.

College Enrollment Is At An All Time Low

The high level of debt that graduates leave college with has potential academics wondering what the real cost of education is. It’s quite a challenge to be able to afford a mortgage, a wedding or to even start a family when faced with monthly loan repayments of around $500-$600.  The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found that college enrollment rates decreased in 2016 for the fourth consecutive year. The number of students enrolled on college courses in 2016 was down 1.7% from 2015. It’s hard to know for sure exactly what the future of education looks like for the next generation, but as college enrollment decreases we can expect to see more high-school leavers heading straight for the workplace than ever before.

Expert Selection: Data, Open Source And Networking.

Manuel Acevedo - Data, Open Source And NetworkingManuel Acevedo

Manuel Acevedo is an independent consultant from Argentina specializing in information-communication technologies for development (ICT4D), Information Society, digital inclusion and development networks. His hope is to contribute to a truly networked developmental scene worldwide (a Development 2.0, 3.0, x.0…?), and to help turn the management of development networks more a science than an art (where it presently stands, in my opinion). He has selected videos that made an impression on himself, of a diverse nature.

According to Erwin Blom ‟This brings the love to stats! “www.tis.tv

Hans Rosling changed the way I thought about data, its presentation and how it can make a difference (i.e., for policy making). Rosling makes data analysis a fun, exciting topic — that has a lot of merit!

This is part of a playlist from the ”10 Tactics for Turning Information into Action”, a must see for activist for social and human rights everywhere. It was produced by the Tactical Tech collective, and the 10 Tactics web site complements the videos with useful resources.

Juliana Rotich, one of the founders of Ushahidi, talks about the benefits of crowd mapping and the process that makes Ushahidi’s products possible, based on an open source community. Also refers to some limits on open innovation. Ushahidi has been used in a variety of conflics environments (and for other purposes), such as post-elections in Kenya or the Haiti earthquake.

According to Erwin Blom ‟Technology has limitations too.”www.tis.tv

An interesting session about “Liability and Reliability Of Crowdsourced and Volunteered Information for Disaster Management” at the Woodrow Wilson Centre in Washington D.C. Thinking a bit more about limitations of technology (without downplaying its advantages).

A fascinating talk by Yochai Benkler, one of the great intellectuals (perhaps with Manuel Castells) on the topic of networked societies. He underpins some of the key concepts that he explored in his famous book “The Wealth of Networks”. It’s good to be aware about the theories behind all the excitement about Openness, Innovations, Crowd-sourcing, etc. Even if it’s to reflect on what they are not so good at achieving (at least in non-ideal circumstances).

Nice to meet: Maud Kist-Stevers

Maud Kist-Stevers Spark Your Life

Waar stond jouw wieg?

Ik ben geboren en getogen in Eindhoven. Na m’n afstuderen heb ik de wereld rondgereisd. Bij terugkomst ben ik mijn eigen bedrijf “Spark Your Life” gestart.

Waar sta jij over 10 jaar?

More About: Sports

More about Sports and innovation

The Future Of Sports Is Now

Even when you think this generation of athletes is the absolute best in their field, future generations will blow us away anew, setting new records. Speed, height or distance, every dimension and record will be conquered again. Many sports records have been broken in the last decade to an ever increasing advance in sports technology.

Ever since the beginning of sports, and especially in the last decade, innovations have enabled athletes to run faster, jump higher and hit harder. Most of these technological developments can be classified into three segments:

material improvements — improvements in fabrics and footwear, making it more lasting, aerodynamic, lightweight, safe or breathable.
data collection — measuring and filming athletes while they are training and performing can provide insight into their health and help building optimal training schedules.
creation of new sports tools — First the ball, the skateboard and the ping pong ball — now Virtual Reality, Kinect and Nintendo Wii have create a whole new way of experiencing sports.

Material improvements

A great deal of record breaking innovations in sports are linked to material improvements. Think of how Nike single-handed improved performances in basketball (among other sports) with the Nike Air Max, how studs on your boots makes transformed the game of soccer on muddy pitches, how adding dimples to a golf ball reduces drag in mid-air and how the Zamboni made the lives for ice hockey players and speed skaters much easier, and faster!

Data collection

The most data-driven sports in the world? That would be Formula 1 racing. Sensors in the race cars provide information about engine performance, tyres, fuel and temperature which enables the crew to take thoughtout decisions in a matter of seconds when the racing car arrives at the pit stop.

Many other sports have embedded sensors in clothing, shoes and wearables on the body; collecting data on performance, recovery capacity, energy levels and pulse rate. Coaches and medical staff use this data to customize training sessions specific to a person. But also think of a sports match on TV, during the broadcast the commentators also make use of this data to evoke an interactive experience. Recently, the sensors have also made it into rugby and American football, preventing injuries and concussions.

Nowadays, collecting data on sports performance is not just for top athletes. A wide variety of tracker apps and wearables have also been made available to individuals for use at home and outdoors, such as Runkeeper and FitBit.

Creation of new sports (tools)

The sports world is constantly moving, whether the rules of the game are updated (to guarantee more safety for the players), monitoring tools such as Hawk-Eye technology are added, or whether the materials used get an update (soccer: from an inflated pig bladder wrapped in leather, to wine bottles covered in leather, to rubber balls, to the first synthetic soccer ball), developments are everywhere.

The discovery of the ‘ball’ brought forward many new sports, as did the bike and board. They must have astounded the first few people that played with it. And now, it’s almost impossible to imagine how competing in Virtual Reality-sports and with hoover boards and drones will someday be normal to us.

Sports have become more inclusive

Nowadays, people with physical disabilities get more and more chances to perform in sports. Prosthetics and smart tools have made a huge difference in sports participation among people with physical disabilities. See for example how this swim cap will change the lives of many blind swimmers. And also think of specially designed carbon-fibre wheelchairs and carbon-fibre running prostheses.

Interview with Hector Kolonas, the initiator of the coworking Secret Santa

‘Tis the season to be merry! And Hector Kolonas, a well-known figure among coworking spaces in London had a great idea to bring the magic of December inside several coworking communities.

Hi Hector, could you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hey! I’m a 30-year-old ‘problem solver’ who was born in South Africa, launched my first 2 businesses from the little island of Cyprus, and now run included.co to enrich coworking communities worldwide from ‘sunny’ London.

When did your path cross with coworking?

Initially, my first touch of ‘coworking’ was an awful experience falling for, and struggling to escape from, a serviced office provider who sold me on the idea of a supportive entrepreneurial community, which just didn’t actually exist.

At the end of March 2013 all banks across Cyprus were frozen for 2 weeks, and in the ensuing chaos, almost all companies including many of our clients either went bust or had to let go of up to 90% of their staff.

The situation left our company in tatters, but when I saw that all these beautiful offices with fast internet and delicious coffee were now sitting empty, I took action. Empty desks were made available to the ultra-talented but now unemployed people of Cyprus for a token ‘rent’ of around €100 per month.

It was in these communities that I saw the real ‘coworking’ take hold. Seeing people who had great jobs on Friday, that were made redundant on Tuesday, but by Friday were starting new businesses and actually helping out others within the spaces blew my mind.

I finally ‘got’ coworking and the impact it could have. And it’s what lead me to build included.co to enable and enrich communities like this all around the world.

You are the initiator of the coworking secret Santa, how did you come up with this?

Secret Santa is a common idea in the US and UK, and a few other places, and is usually done in large organizations to make sure everyone get something for Christmas without everyone having to buy a gift for every other person in their team. Which would be nuts and crazy expensive.

For a long time, both before and after launching included, I worked for myself and almost always by myself. This meant that when bigger teams were giving gifts to each other, or throwing Christmas parties, I couldn’t exactly party on my own.

Spaces do a great job of throwing parties, lunches or dinners that are inclusive and make people feel part of something bigger, but there are so many founders, freelancers, and other solo-workers who won’t get the joy of receiving something small from another person (who’s not trying to sell them something).

And so the idea was to bring 100s of these individuals, and teams who don’t want the headache of running their own internal exchange, across the coworking world to send and get a small gift this December.

The coworking world is built on collaboration, support, and community, this is just a silly way we can give another member somewhere one more reason to smile before the end of 2017.

And how do the secret Santa works?

The idea is to match up every person who joins the exchange with 1 other person across the network.

Anyone who works for or in any coworking space can join the programme from included.co/secretsanta, and this means they’re willing to send a small gift to someone else.

We recommend that the gift costs at max €7, £7 or $7, so that people can get creative without burning their wallets.

Everyone who signs up will be given (in secret) the name and workspace address of someone else who joined in. This is who they’re ‘Secret Santa’ for.

Right now we allow the members and operators of 224 communities to join in, but any coworking space can join in the fun by registering as an included partner community for free here.

How can people participate?

If you’re in a coworking community that’s already part of the included network, pop over to included.co/secretsanta and ‘Unlock’ the offer.

If you’re unsure, check the list of communities on that page, and/or ask your community managers by pinging them the included.co/secretsanta link
