How to – Seats2meet Update 2017

Today marks a new era! During the whole summer our developers (you know them as Wouter, Dennis, and Kevin) have been working to make the S2M management system easier, prettier and most of all, more complete to your needs. So let’s see what’s new!

To-Dos

Communicate with your team and don’t leave any task behind with the new To Do feature. Here is what you can do with it.

Assign a task for anyone in your team
Create a deadline for tasks
Notifications will be sent to the ones involved in the tasks when it is either done or the deadline is approaching

Creating a To-Do is extremely easy! You can do it in two different ways.

Create it in your location dashboard. In the left column click on + add to-do.

There you can add a subject, the due date, and details. When you save it, the to do will always be on the left column, until you mark it as done in the box to the left of the subject.

2. The other way to create a to-do is by going to reservations, invoices, proposals, customers, companies or vouchers. Whenever you click on a specific item in one of those pages, you get the option to add a note. The note can be either a reminder in that specific case, or it can be a to-do. To make it a to-do it’s also easy! just mark it as ‘Is a to-do’.

Yes, I know, the look and the information in the customer page already changed! But we will get back to it soon. In the customer or company you want to add the note click on add note and select ‘Is a to-do’. When you select this option the note will go straight to the to-do column and you can set a due date for that task, so you will be notified when the deadline is reaching its end.

Once you click ‘next’ you will find the list of the employees that work in your location. There you can select people to assign the task or note to. Once they are assigned the to-do will also be on their to-do column and they will also be notified when it is done or when it is close to the deadline.

You can use the to-dos to communicate with your team, assign tasks, and manage processes as follow-ups after a proposal was sent, add a specific demand a client had and many other applications. The sky is the limit!

Proposals

In the ‘Bookings’ section, there is a new item! In proposals, you can generate a customized e-mail with a pdf specific for each client’s demand.

When clicking on ‘add’ a proposal you can choose the day, the time, the numbers of seats and which room specifically you are creating the proposal for. See the example below.

 

 

Once you click on ‘book’ you can search and select the individual or the company you are sending this proposal to.

 

If the individual you selected is also part of a company, you can also select the company in the next step.

 

 

Once you select the company or individual you are going to send the proposal to, you can continue to see all the details and create a ‘booking’. You can also add tags to facilitate searching proposals in the future.

And now is where the fun part begins! After you select ‘create booking’ you directed to a detail page. On ‘Settings’ you can customize your e-mail and the pdf, which will use the pictures of your location as well.

In the proposal settings, you can personalize the e-mail texts, creating versions both in Dutch and in English. The pdf that will be generated is divided into 5 different sections: Intro Content, Meeting spaces content, Options Content, Summary Content and Outro Content (the conclusion part). You can personalize all of them and choose which blocks you are going to send by checking the ‘Show in PDF’ box.

It’s important to know that once you save the content in the blocks, they won’t change for the next proposal, so you don’t have to rewrite them every time. So to save time, it’s good to write in the way that you can send it to all your clients, only changing small details. And when you are done, just go back to your proposal and hit ‘send new e-mail’.

Cancellation Reasons

In the cancellation report, there are statistics for 6 predefined reasons the operators from key S2M locations suggested, which are:

Don’t want to give a reason
Found a cheaper location
Meeting is canceled
No participants
Going to another region/city/area
Meeting is rescheduled

In this way, it’s easier to track what is the most common reason why reservations are canceled and get more insights. When a customer indicates ‘other’ as a reason they can fill in which is the actual reason. Operators can also include a specific reason for cancellation on ‘Edit reservation’.

Check-in for Admin

 Another new feature is Check-in. Now your team can check-in your network without occupating any of the seats.

To do it just go on top of the left column, select check-in, reply the questions, select how long you are staying in the location and save! Voi lá, you are checked in and if you go into your account in the TSM app, you can find matches and chat with the network.

 

New Login Feature

This one goes for both hosts and users! Instead of having to remember your password, now you can log in via link request.

 

It’s easy! Just select the option ‘log in link request’, put your e-mail there, and you will receive an e-mail with a link. When you click that magical link, you will be already logged in in Seats2meet!

 

 

Notification Rules

No, it’s not that rules in the sense that it rocks. Now, so you don’t get overwhelmed with millions of notifications, you can create rules for them! For example, you can set a rule that you will be notified everytime meetings with a value over 500,- euros are canceled.

To create the rules go to your notifications on the right top corner of the page and click on settings.

There you can create several rules involving meeting spaces, workspaces, cancellation, new reservations, proposals and referring to the value and revenue you set, so you only get notifications that matter to you.

Reservation E-mail

In the same settings where you can personalize your notification rules and the proposal e-mail and pdf, you can find the Reservation E-mail Text.

The reservation e-mail stands for the confirmation e-mail all users receive when booking a workspace or a meeting space.

 

Other updates

Beyond the new features there are other updates that are worth mentioning:

New profile system – more stable and flexible for integrations in the future.
Clear code – All the irrelevant code lines were deleted to make it easier for others in the future.
Style – other pages, as the voucher page, were given a new style to be more in line with the rest of the update.

Hoe doe jij dat nu eigenlijk?

Heb je er weleens bij stil gestaan dat de manier waarop je werkt – en dus niet het werk wat je doet – een inspiratie kan zijn voor anderen? Welke gadgets gebruik je en hoe hou je eigenlijk al die acties bij? Terwijl in de boekhandel de boeken over productiviteit, balans en ‘hoe word je gelukkig’ de deur uit vliegen, gaan in de praktijk weinig gesprekken hierover. Ondertussen is eigenlijk iedereen opzoek naar een effectievere of slimmere manier van werken. Gek ook eigenlijk, dat we op school niet leren hoe je moet werken, waar je je inspiratie vandaan kan halen en hoe je effectief je kennis kan delen met anderen.

Wij van Seats2meet Amersfoort CS vonden dat het tijd was om dat te veranderen. Tijd om ook kennis te delen over de manier waarop je werkt en niet alleen over de inhoud van je werk. En zo is Social Mornings geboren. In Social Mornings interviewen we lokale co-working helden over de “behind the scenes” van hun werkwijze en projecten.

Productiviteitstips, favoriete boeken, ochtendrituelen alles wat mogelijk interessant kan zijn, komt aan bod. Juist van je collega ZP’er die ook flex werkt bij Seats2meet, want onze ervaring is dat je van hen het meest kan leren. Hij of zijn heeft immers net zoveel veel ballen als jij in de lucht hoog te houden.

Tijdens de Socials Mornings (1 x per maand op vrijdagochtend) hoor je in korte tijd veel tips. Lekker productief, want we beginnen al vroeg om 8.45 uur en je kunt tegelijkertijd met verse croissantjes ontbijten. Om 9.30 kun je al weer aan de slag met je eigen werk. We maken ook een podcast van de gesprekken, die naderhand te beluisteren zijn.

Tip van de dag: niet alleen tijdens de Social Mornings kun je leren over de werkwijze van anderen. Vraag vooral tussentijds aan je collega ZP’ers over hun inspiratiebronnen, de manier waarop zij in balans blijven of al hun acties bij houden? Wat ze altijd in hun tas hebben zitten en welke gadgets zij graag gebruiken? Leuke gesprekken zijn gegarandeerd en daarbij doe je vaak ook nog veel handige tips op :).

Interview Duurzame Week

Next week the Duurzame Week Utrecht (sustainability week) happens in Utrecht and we just had an interview with Clemens Streng, one of the 100 makers of the greenest week of the year.

Could you tell us what is the Duurzame week?

Duurzame Week (Sustainable Week) is a foundation that believes that a yearly festival in Utrecht can contribute significantly to make the society sustainable. During the festival, a stage is offered to entrepreneurs and visitors of all kind, who together search and inspire for a sustainable future.

Duurzame Week particularly aims for ecological sustainability: efficient use of energy, raw materials and water; recycling; sustainable consumption, improving air quality, and expansion of green space.

The event uses several categories to help channel and stimulate awareness for sustainable behavior: work, home, food, stuff, and free time. Within these categories, Duurzame Week offers activities that help build a network of entrepreneurs and residents.

When does it happen?

Duurzame Week takes place October 7th to 14th

How can people participate?

You can participate simply by picking and attending the activities that suit you best, from pub quiz to workshop to lecture, and more. For some events, you have to buy a ticket for which you can use the website duurzameweek.nl/programma. Plenty events are free to attend! Furthermore, you can take the stage and show how you support sustainability by organizing an activity.

When did you start to organize the Duurzame week?

The concept of Duurzame Week Utrecht was raised by Koen Kooper and Margit Végh in 2015 and lead to the first edition of the Duurzame Week in October 2016. This is the second consecutive year that Duurzame Week is organized.

Besides more than 100 people organizing and supporting Duurzame Week, there are a tremendous number of partnerships and initiatives around the city. With this, Duurzame Week has three times as much activities compared to last year’s edition. That is something we are very proud of! What’s new is our festival heart at the Dom square, where sustainability becomes tangible. You can come here for a Duurzame Week beer, an interesting lecture or for entertainment.

And where did the idea came from?

Duurzame Week Foundation is an initiative for inhabitants and entrepreneurs from Utrecht who want to live in a green and healthy city. Now and in the future. Utrecht is well on its way when it comes to green initiatives. That is what Duurzame Week aims for: we show what Utrecht has got! Together we give it our best to make Utrecht even more sustainable.

What is the impact of the Duurzame week?

Duurzame Week makes sustainability visible, connects and inspires people, towards a more sustainable future. Through the many encounters participants of Duurzame Week, events learn how to impact with their everyday choices at work, at home…

What is your advice to people who want to live a ‘duurzame’ life year around?

In order to live a sustainable life, Duurzame Week can advise thinking about how your choices in life impact your surroundings, the environment. The very important incremental step of comprehension – what does this mean in terms of sustainability –  can matter a great deal!

Jan Terlouw who is speaking during the festival is a very inspiring man. All that has brought him to who he is today: wise, interesting, charismatic, his storytelling captures everyone. He is a thought leader. He can definitely be our idol!

Weird question

If you could design a planet from scratch, what would it be like? Be really specific.

As in trees with endless apples? Cruelty-free meat? This question is aimed to look for the master problem instead of symptoms. As you would want to design a planet in such a way that the problems we refer to in our purpose don’t exist. We aim for a sustainable future because we consume our planet. The planet’s design is not the problem, per se. That is, if only we would live with the planet as part of the ecosystem. But we have created systems that stimulate people to desire money. We value money over natural resources and its sustainability.

Perhaps we can accept this as an assignment for the Duurzame Week. Let us discuss ideas on how we can redesign Earth so that it integrates sustainability during the Duurzame Week, for example at the Duurzame Utrecht Meetup.

Jouw verhaal verkoopt (vanzelf)!

Het verkopen van een product of dienst. Een aantal ondernemers in ons waardenetwerk gaat het moeiteloos af, maar het overgrote deel vindt het lastig. Zelf vind ik het ook niet altijd even makkelijk. Afgelopen vrijdag volgde ik een inspirerende training van de Green Badger over sales en mindset. De Gouden Cirkel van Simon Sinek (filmpje) kwam ook langs en de boodschap “People don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it” resoneerde meer dan ooit bij me.

Ik bedacht me dat ik de laatste tijd mijn ‘why’ steeds vaker achterwege laat en regelmatig denk: deze persoon wil gewoon weten dat ik op een super centrale plek inspirerende ruimtes verhuur voor een goede prijs. Maar na vrijdag zal ik mijn ‘why’ niet meer zo makkelijk overslaan en zal ik zoveel mogelijk (potentiële) gebruikers van o.a. Seats2meet Amersfoort CS meenemen in mijn drive om mensen te verbinden om zo mijn steentje bij te dragen aan de vernieuwing en verbinding die nodig zijn in deze snel veranderende wereld met de grote uitdagingen waarvoor we staan.

Festival over moeiteloos verkopen…

Op vrijdagmiddag 3 november organiseer ik samen met Angele Bakker de tweede editie van het festival It’s all about me op onze Seats2meet-locatie in Amersfoort. Deze najaarseditie gaat over moeiteloos verkopen. Of eigenlijk niet over verkopen, maar over moeiteloos ondernemen. En verkopen hoort daar natuurlijk bij. Tijdens het festival kun je twee dingen verwachten: inspiratie-talks hoe jij ook moeiteloos gaat ondernemen (en dus ook verkopen) én concrete praktische workshops die je helpen concreet de boer op te gaan met jouw verhaal. Want als jouw verhaal klopt, verkoop je vanzelf! Daarvan ben ik helemaal overtuigd. Ik kijk zelf ook uit naar de inspiratie-talks en workshops die geprogrammeerd staan, want het onderzoeken van je ‘why’ en het aanscherpen van je verhaal is volgens mij een continue proces.

Waarom koopt Ikea TaskRabbit? | Ontwikkeling freelance platformen | Waar bemoeit Theresa May zich mee?

Amsterdam krijgt grip op Airbnb: minder illegale verhuur – Amsterdam – PAROOL

De inspanningen van de stad Amsterdam om grip te krijgen op shortstay verhuur via online platformen. Achter de schermen heb ik vanuit mijn plek in de denktank shortstayverhuur gezien welke inspanningen worden gedaan en ik ben er van overtuigd dat deze stappen alleen gemaakt konden worden door al in 2014 met het meest dominante platform Airbnb in gesprek te gaan. Op die manier leerde de stad hoe met deze ontwikkeling om te gaan. 

De vraag die nog wel staat is hoe wenselijk het aantal shortstay accomodaties dat er momenteel wordt aangeboden is. Maar dat is ook een vraag dat past in een groter visie plaatje over toerisme en leefbaarheid in de stad. Kijkend naar de gemiddelde kamerprijzen, Amsterdam staat op nummer 1 van hoogste gemiddelde Airbnb verhuur prijs, vallen er ook vraagtekens te zetten bij de opmerkingen die ik vaak voorbij zie komen dat dankzij Airbnb achtige platformen juist de goedkope toerist waar de stad niets aan overhoudt een bezoek brengt aan Amsterdam. 

De volgende stap, en daar zal in de volgende nieuwsbrief vast nog iets over voorbij komen, is de stap die Amsterdam heeft gezet naar een platform onafhankelijke handhaving strategie. Dit omdat de stad veel heeft geleerd van de samenwerking met Airbnb, maar naast Airbnb geen enkel ander platform dezelfde commitment als Airbnb aan wil gaan met de hulp in het terugdringen van illegale verhuur. 

Afgelopen zondag ging in Amsterdam de registratieplicht in: iedere keer als je jouw huis verhuurt, dan moet je dit digitaal melden. Doe je dit niet, dan krijg je een fikse boete vanaf 6.000euro. Dit kan een heel succesvol instrument zijn, mits het ook goed wordt uitgevoerd. En dat moet de komende maanden duidelijk worden. 

Uber ruling puts jobs at risk, says Theresa May – BBC News

“The prime minister says a decision to stop the taxi-hailing company operating in London is “disproportionate”.”. Bijzonder dat May zich even los van de vraag of je het wel of niet eens bent met haar uitspraak, publiekelijk in deze discussie mengt. Dat zet natuurlijk vraagtekens over wat daar achter de schermen heeft plaatsgevonden. Dat een nationale overheid of het bestuur van een staat een individuele stad overruled in een beslissing om Uber (mogelijk) te verbieden of om nieuwe drempels op te werpen is overigens niet nieuw. Dit is o.a. in Austin en Winconsin al eerder gebeurd. Zeer interessant en lezenswaardig is dit stuk over hoe Uber en Lyft hun plek in Austin terug hebben veroverd. 

Als eerste reactie zul je (en dat had ik ook) denken: sluw van Uber om hun lobby macht op de meer overkoepelende overheidsorganen te zetten: zij kunnen blijkbaar de lokale beslissingen, die ook vaak zijn beïnvloed door lobby praktijken van de lokale spelers, dwarsbomen. Aan de andere kant is het bij een internationaal platform als Uber ook eigenlijk niet meer dan logisch dat zij het liefst met staten of landen zelf afspraken willen maken. Omdat zij anders stad voor stad in onderhandeling moeten gaan en dat is niet te doen. Je kunt dit vergelijken met Airbnb in Nederland. Amsterdam heeft een goede band en afspraken gemaakt en dat is te rechtvaardigen gezien de omzet die het bedrijf in Amsterdam draait. Maar nu zie je dat bijna iedere gemeente in gesprek wil gaan met Airbnb. En dat is een onwerkbare situatie. Ik ben dan ook benieuwd wanneer in Nederland er nationale agenda wordt opgesteld voor de platformeconomie. 

Food4thought: in de hele Uber Londen discussie wordt gesproken over 3,5 miljoen klanten en 30-40 duizend chauffeurs. Dit zijn cijfers die Uber heeft aangeleverd, ik ben nog geen enkele andere bron met deze cijfers tegengekomen. De impact waar May het over heeft is een uitspraak op basis van cijfers waar de echtheid van niet vast staat. Discutabel dat op basis van die data zo’n uitspraak door zo’n invloedrijk persoon wordt gedaan. 

Ikea has bought TaskRabbit – Recode

Opmerkelijk nieuws: Ikea heeft een van de bekendste klusjesplatformen waar niet professionals hun diensten kunnen aanbieden TaskRabbit overgenomen. TaskRabbit blijft, zoals nu wordt aangegeven, een zelfstandig bedrijf. 

Hoewel er geen financiële details bekend zijn gemaakt, is het interessant om eens verder na te denken waarom het in 2008 opgerichte bedrijf is verkocht. Wanneer je naar de investeringen in het bedrijf kijkt dan zie je dat de afgelopen jaren er relatief weinig geld is ingegaan, zeker wanneer je dit met concurrent Helpling (bieden ook schoonmaak aan, TaskRabbit gaat veel breder, maar Helpling gaat de komende jaren ook de breedte in) vergelijkt dan stelt het eigenlijk niet zo heel veel voor. 

De verhalen van TaskRabbit lezend zijn er een aantal gebeurtenissen geweest die een negatieve invloed kunnen hebben gehad op de groei en toekomst van het bedrijf: 

TaskRabbit heeft al sinds het begin een heel breed dienstenpakket voor haar gebruikers aangeboden rondom huishoudelijke klusjes. Hoewel het fijn is om een ‘one stop shop’ te hebben, is het voor de groei altijd erg lastig om direct breed te beginnen. Bijna alle platformen, waaronder ook Helpling, beginnen smal (alleen schoonmaak bijv.) en gaan als dat staat de breedte in (met bijv. glazenwassers en meer). 
Het oorspronkelijke model van TaskRabbit was een bieding model zoals bij bijvoorbeeld Werkspot. De klant zet een klus op het platform en de aanbieders kunnen bieden om de klus te krijgen. Bij een Werkspot werkt dit goed omdat het om klussen gaat met een gemiddeld hoge waarde. Bij TaskRabbit ging het voornamelijk om de wat kleinere klusjes/werkzaamheden. Waardoor het voor de ‘workers’ te veel gedoe was om urenlang te scrollen door alle aanvragen. Om het technisch samen te vatten: de transactiekosten waren te hoog. In 2014 hebben ze dit model aangepast, maar ik denk dat dit te laat is geweest. 

Door bovenstaande gebeurtenissen zou het mij niets verbazen dat het niet is gelukt om het businessmodel sluitend of sluitend genoeg te maken. Door de overname van IKEA hoeft de winst niet alleen te komen uit de marge op transactie, maar kan het klusplatform in een veel bredere e-commerce strategie worden meegenomen. Dan kan het platform bijdragen aan sales voor Ikea, branding, etc. etc. etc. En dan zou het model opeens wel uit kunnen.

De vraag die mij nu bezig houdt is of een retail bedrijf als Ikea het lukt om een tech bedrijf als TaskRabbit te helpen succesvol te worden.

“Upwork neemt consultans in dienst om corporates te ondersteunen bij het vinden van freelancers. Een nieuwe stap met alle bedreigingen van dien.” Interessante move van Upwork. En de beschrijving ‘bedreiging’ in dit artikel is natuurlijk puur vanuit het oogpunt van de gevestigde orde. 

Wat mij opviel was dit fragment: “Een jaar geleden werd het tarievenmodel fors aangepast, waarmee duidelijk werd dat ze zich liever richten op de wat langer lopende opdrachten met een hoger tarief (dus eerder ‘interim’ dan ‘klusjes’).”

Dit doet mij vermoeden dat de transactiekosten voor het klusjesmodel niet interessant genoeg was om een steady model neer te zetten. Klusjesplatform Fiverr.com is met een vergelijkbare transitie bezig. Ik sprak de COO in december 2015 tijdens mijn bezoek aan Tel Aviv.

Een echte digitale overheid is in mijn ogen een overheid die platformen en tools aan de markt faciliteert om eenvoudige verbindingen te leggen en transactiekosten te verlagen. 

Ik sloeg dan ook redelijk stijl achterover toen las over de nieuwe tarieven voor het gebruik van DigiD: “Instanties gaan dan 14 cent betalen per keer dat een burger succesvol inlogt op DigiD. Ieder bericht dat naar de inbox van MijnOverheid wordt gestuurd, gaat 57 cent kosten.” 

Naar mijn mening de doodsteek voor de toekomst van een dergelijk systeem. En ook al wordt deze stap teruggedraaid, dan zal toch het vertrouwen in DigiD als tool voor developers een deuk hebben opgelopen.

Airbnb huurders en verhuurders opgelet. Maarten ter Huurne (UU) doet een mooi onderzoek dat zich richt op de vraag waarom mensen elkaar vertrouwen in de deeleconomie. Vertrouwen is een belangrijk aspect in de deeleconomie, omdat je online vaak met vreemden een transactie aangaat. Hoewel het volgens sommige theorieën heel onlogisch is dat we dit doen, gebeurt het toch op grote schaal. 

Inzicht in hoe vertrouwen tot stand komt tussen mensen in de deeleconomie kan een bijdrage leveren aan de wijze waarop platformeigenaren hun website kunnen inrichten en consumenten meer kennis van de markt geven. Meer vertrouwen kan zelfs bijdragen tot een verdere groei van de deeleconomie, want voor veel mensen blijft het gebrek aan vertrouwen de grootste barrière om deel te nemen hieraan.

Living in the new world!

The world is changing in a fast way! Can you notice it? What is changing in your life? Are old habits not valid for you anymore? Maybe you feel in your stomach that something is missing in your life. Life is going fast, always busy, working hard to pay the rent or mortgage. Maybe you have work, but your heart is not beating fast about it. If that is the case, in your heart you know that there must be more for you. And maybe you have listened already to that voice that is telling you that you can follow your heart. You might already connect with a way of living that is fulfilling.

The world is changing, we cannot doubt that. But where are we going to, might be very scary for some of us. Do we still have money or banks, do we still have our insurance? We do not know now. But what we can do is trust it. Trust that the future will give us what we need, only with trust we can come somewhere. With fear, we are blocking a new and more fulfilling future for us. How do you want to live if you have no limits what so ever? The sky is the limit! I can taste that in our future this will be true. Things that were impossible in the past, will be possible. There are miracles to happen in our lives. If we just give over to our heart’s, listen to it and are willing to take steps and risks. If you don’t take the step’s and risk’s your heart is asking for, changes are difficult. It take’s all your guts! But every one of us has that guts for sure!!

Have you noticed the tiny house movement? More and more you read about it, hear about it (even in the new’s on TV). Young people are not able to afford a house, they can’t even get a mortgage. But the most important thing is that they do not want to be a slave anymore of their house. They want to be free! Free to do hobby’s, to travel and to explore what they want in life. That is what they fulfill. If they just have this tiny house (20m2) on wheels, they can live anywhere with it. You can not have much stuff if you live

small. But also that is freedom because stuff takes your attention. In the old days, stuff was meant to be collected. Stuff was normal to have. Now stuff is a load that needs to get rid of or gives away to people who need it more. Less is more.

If I let myself go to dream about the future, how would this look like? First of all, I see people follow their hearts. That will be very important in the future. There will be room for that. Our private and working life will be more together in the future. Because in the future, we have work we love and chosen our selves. Maybe that work not exists yet, but we can discover it ourselves. Everyone has enough money to live their life and enjoy life. We just cannot accept anymore that there is poverty or inequality. Not that everybody needs to earn the same, some people just need more money for their purpose and that is

alright. We give each other a good price for their jobs, not more and not less. People who earn exorbitantly much money, that belongs to the past. Also because for them in the future that does not feel right anymore. Our hearts are opening more and even they who live their lives around money are beginning to think (or better: to feel!).

We cannot accept this animal abuse anymore, our hearts just cannot live with it. Bioindustry is gone. Animals are walking freely in nature and we can still eat meat if we want. But there will only be meat from animals that have had a good life. If you think about eating meat from the bioindustry, those animals that lead a sad life. What will do that meat with your body? It will make your body sad and suppressed, in the end, it will make your mind sad and suppressed. You are becoming what you eat is really true. Do you want to feel sad and suppressed? That is your own choice.

We choose how we live and in where we live. In the future we don’t want new big buildings to come, there are already enough. What we do want is to live on that ground. I see many tiny houses, Yurt’s (nomadic tent’s) and self-build eco houses in the future. They are standing on government ground, which given to us. We have our own space there where we can be creative and have our gardens, because to grow your own food is a great good in the future! Around our own spaces, there is nature. We let nature go and slowly pieces of nature grow together so that, wild animals can move to where they feel it’s good for them. Now they are heald in so called natureparks. Wild horses are living there, I talk

about the peace of land in Almere. The horses cannot live their nomadic life to find food and shelter and they die! That is nature they say! But this is no nature. We give them a small piece and respect them to live there. It’s cruel in my opinion. Animals have the right to go where there instinct take them. And also it’s the right of human!

We will have no passports anymore, we will be worldsittisens! We can travel where we want and when we want. No visums or rules. We will be developt enough to handel this and not abuse this new system. This is because we listen to our conscience. We will not live with ensurense or pensions anymore. We all give the mony away what we can miss to a

central point and they will give it to the people who need it. We will not accept people to suffer and not accept people that take advantage of it. We do not want to stop working (our dreamwork) when we are 65 because we just love it too much. And it will be work wich we can do to an old age. Everyone is in the society, young and old.

City’s will still exist, but different. It wil be an inspirational place where people can meet and see art’s. It will not be a shopping palace anymore, but there will be small shops with owners that truly love what they’re selling. The thing’s or clothing will be secondhand, fairtrade and made in harmony with the environment (biological). The city’s are filled with green. There is a lot of room for plants and trees to grow and if we do not have garden’s we can take wild herbs and plants from our area, which we can plant together. So even city folk can be in touch with nature, what is so important for them. The stone suburbs are gone (or much greener) and made a place for creative living in the green. This is how I like to see the future, how do you like to see your future?

Wow, I am getting so excited while writing this! I want this now! I am getting very happy with this picture I have in my mind. But for everything, there is a time. There is a lot of work to do for us now. I think the first thing is to listen to your heart and follow it. What gives you a vibrant feeling? What gives you a big smile? So do that! You have nothing that holds you back, that’s only in your mind. It’s there for us, for sure!

More About: Robots and Artificial Intelligence

Both in the physical and the digital world, more and more is done by robots and AI’s. Be amazed by what they already can do and surprised by what they will be doing in the near future.

Robots in the workplace

Robots are designed to make a person’s tasks easier, more efficient, less time-consuming and safer. This is especially true for the robots that take over in the work place. What about the Fleet Cleaner robot for ships, the robots taking over in the hospitality industry, the continuously improving conveyer belt technology in Japan, the Telerobot remote-controlled police assistant, the traffic control robot in Kinshasa, the Farmbot perfecting your crops, the Swagbot that herds your cattle, the Veebot that draws your blood, the bot that delivers take-out to your door and the dozens of small robots that help sorting the packages in a warehouse?!

Robots at home

If you think robots are too expensive to have in your own house, think again. There are more and more models that are aimed at the consumer’s market. Check out these friendly bots that help you manage your household: Robit, Aido and Kuri. And if you hate folding your laundry, use the Foldimate.

Humanoids vs cyborgs

Where humanoids are robots with human characteristics or form, cyborgs are humans with restored or enhanced abilities thanks to artificial components.

Humanoids

It makes sense that if you can want a machine to interact with humans and take over from a human, you create a robot that has human characteristics and abilities, something people can relate and get accustomed to. After all, communicating with a machine is hard enough, let alone if it looks like a box with some wires attached. Good thing, we’ve seen a lot of them.

Take the Jia Jia robot for example, this realistic and witty robot is the future for the hospitality industry. But also the Valkyrie robot that might one day end up in a space mission to Mars, the Yamaha Motobot which can actually drive a motor cycle, the Hitchbot which travels around Canada, the Atlas robot by Boston Dynamics that can walk and correct its stride like a human, this amazing skeleton robot with electric-powered muscles and don’t forget this interactive robot that helps children with autism.

Cyborgs

Sadly, so far, we haven’t come across a lot of video examples of cyborgs. But then again, cyborgs are mostly an invention of the science-fiction industry and not a reality (yet?). I do want you to check out this video from Duoskin, which shows how on-skin interfaces might give us easy control over our electronic devices. And second, this clip by BionX Medical Technology about the Empower Ankle, an innovative leg prosthetic.

Biomimicry in robots

Not just humans, also animals and animal behavior has been studied as an inspiration to create robots. How do animals move, and how can that movement be copied with technology? There are quite some amazing robotic animals out there, that more or less look, jump, fly and move like the real thing: bats, bees, birds, cheetahs, dogs, horses, kangaroos, octopi and even termites. Many of which are from the hands of the brilliant engineers at Boston Dynamics.

Weak AI vs Strong AI

Two types of artificial intelligence can be discerned: weak artificial intelligence and strong Traffic control robots artificial intelligence. Where machines with weak (or narrow) AI focus on applying intelligence to one specific problem, without the presence of self-consciousness, machines with strong AI have a certain self-consciousness and their intelligence can be applied to a variety of ‘problems’.

The public opinion is that real strong artificial intelligence hasn’t been achieved yet, as that would mean that a machine’s intellectual capability is functionally equal to a human’s. However, in the following we’ll make the distinction between machines/software that are made for a specific tasks and machines/software that appear to have a consciousness.

Examples and talks on weak AI

Two of the buzzwords nowadays are chatbots and AI assistants. Think for example of all the bots being added to Facebook Messenger. 1–800-FLOWERSfor example, makes ordering flowers online even easier or the DoNotPay Botmade by Joshua Browder to help people get rid of their parking tickets.

On the other side you have AI assistants, of which the most famous, Apple’s Siri, has now been surpassed by Viv. In general they make your live easier while driving (Dashbot) or while planning a citytrip, while looking for the right patients for your clinical trial (Deep6AI) or while drawing (Google’s AutoDraw)!

Examples and talks on strong AI

As we don’t have concrete example of strong artificial intelligence yet, we’d like to share three talks from robotics experts who digged deep into the subjects of artificial intelligence, deep learning, machine learning and ethics:

Neil Jacobstein (Singularity University) discusses the benefits of artificial intelligence and why humans are still better at asking the right questions than robots.
Andrew Smart (author Beyond Zero and One) gives you a short insight into his book on machine consciousness and shares his thoughts to the question ‘can robots trip on acid?’
Nell Watson (Singularity University) discusses machine intelligence, AI philosophy and how ethics should be taught to machines.

Educating, entertaining and just plain silly robots

Right about now, you’ve already got a clear image of what robots can do and what they might be able to do in the future. But we wouldn’t be The Innovation Station, if we didn’t give you a little bit more. So, take a few minutes and go through some more videos on robots taking on sword masters, dinos interacting with kids, cars turning into robots, the world’s first robot acting as an art critic, a robot driving a bike and silly robots build by (non)engineer Simone Giertz.

Not a typical month at TIS HQ. Normally we have a clearly defined topic, such as Robots or Sports, but this month we featured Design. You can see how this resulted in several discussions on whether a project was design (beautification, art) or Design (practical, innovative). Because many were both! Nonetheless, we have made a really cool selection of the 5 best and most breathtaking videos on DESIGN.

1. Sustainable + high-end quality CAN go hand in hand

Fairphone is the world’s first ethical, modular smartphone. The company wants to inspire social change by focusing on four areas: a long-lasting design, fair materials, good working conditions and reuse + recycling. Nowadays it’s rare to see a company produce products which anyone can repair, making it last as long as possible. Over 100.000 have already ordered a Fairphone, illustrating the demand for a move towards fairer electronics.

2. The Shoe That Grows

It’s a strange idea that children from First World countries can wear different shoes every day, including flipflops, sandals, sneakers, boots, etc. while children from Third World countries don’t always have the means to buy a new pair when they’ve grown out of their only other pair. 3. A vacuum cleaner for smog

Using no more electricity than a kettle (1170 Watts), the Smog Free Tower will clean 30.000 cubic meters of air per hour. 4. Turning air into water

Many rural villages in Ethopia lack the simple water infrastructure to fulfill basic needs of running water and sanitation. Warka Water has designed a structure that turns the atmosphere into potable water (50 to 100 liters a day!). Their focus is to create a sustainable and affordable water source which can be operated and maintained by the villagers themselves.

5. The kitchen of the future

IKEA teamed up with design consultants IDEO to answer the question: how will the storage and preparation of food change in the future? In designing a kitchen concept by means of ‘casual technology’ (tools that give us control and guidance when needed, but hidden otherwise) and sustainable living, they targeted the dining table first.
