FIRST MAN: I’ll ask you one more time: what are you doing here, Mr. Nero?

JAKE NERO: I told you what I was doing before your boys started using my head as a doorstop. I have questions about a guy named Lenny DeWalde.

FIRST MAN: And why would we answer those questions, Mr. Nero? What’s he to you?

JAKE NERO: He’s a job to me. What’s he to you?

FIRST MAN: He’s a self-righteo...

Fungible

A: Quit beating around the bush! What does “non-fungible” mean?

B: It means it can’t be replaced by an identical item.

A: What does that even mean?

B: Well imagine you bought something from a store that was defective. It’s under warranty, so you go back to the store and they replce the broken thing with one that works.

B: So that’s an example of something fungible. It’s repl...

A: The first attempt to explain “Non-Fungible Tokens” didn’t go so well, so B is going to try again.

B: …fine. Let’s start with the word “fungible.”

A: That’s not really a word, is it? It’s got to be part of some madman’s imaginary language that has no connection to the real world.

B: Well, it’s mostly only used as a legal term.

B: So yes.

A: Hi! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Well we decided it was time for another edition of “Geometric Objects Explaining Complicated Things.”

B: Today we’re going to explain non-Fungible Tokens, commonly known as “NFTs.”

A: So, B… what exactly is a “Non-Fungible Token?”

B: It’s a token that isn’t fungible.

(Silence.)

A: Seriously?

B: Yep. It’s the exact opposite of a f...

THIS IS ONLY A TEST

Image from OpenClipart-Vectors on Pixabay

People who have followed me on my madcap windmill-tilts will know that I have a tendency to do things that break my website. It’s the danger of having dreams that exceed the size of your staff and operating budget: in my case, my staff is “me” and my budget is “duct tape and various lengths of string.”

This weekend my site went down because I moved it. At least, I’m pretty sure I moved it. It’s a little hard to tell just right now because I’m getti...

Daylight

The smell is overwhelming. It’s not precisely bad—it doesn’t smell of rot or filth—it’s simply so strong it almost burns.

“You all right, son? Come on now. Open them eyes.”

Matthew gags and turns his head, trying to get away from that scent. He opens his eyes, blinking rapidly. The smell is very strong; the room is very bright.

“There we go.” A blurry green shadow squats down to his left. It...

Dusk

Matthew opens his eyes. The smell of dust, while still ever-present, seems less oppressive. He’s on his side, curled into a ball, arms wrapped protectively around his head. He listens without moving, trying to catch a hint of anything moving around him. He hears nothing but the hint of a sullen breeze barely moving through dead grass.

He opens his eyes, straightens, and sits up. He’s in the s...

Dust

Matthew wakes to the smell of dust.

Dust, everywhere: dust on the floor, dust on the walls, dust piled on in layers over a small, broken table lying in pieces to his right. He’s covered in it. It’s in his jacket, his hair, all over his jeans… he can even taste it in his mouth. He groans, struggles to sit, and gags on dust.

His head throbs. His eyes are dry. He feels warm.

He looks aroun...

Today I find myself turning 50.

My first reaction to this is “thank God I finished Issue 36 before this happened” because, as unreasonable and irrational as it may sound, I’m pretty sure that if I hadn’t been able to do there would be some psychic damage. As it is, the only psychic damage I’ve suffered so far is that when we checked the mail this morning we discovered that the American Association of Retired Persons had mailed me membership card.

The we...

The Forums Are Going Away For A While

Photo by Steve Johnson from Pexels.com.

When I first set up this WordPress site I chose a plugin called Asgaros Forums to manage the site’s discussion forum. It’s a great plugin in almost every respect, except one: when a spammer gets past your spam protection and manages to post 900 individual threads in your discussion forum, it expects you to delete every single one by hand.

I’m… not willing to do that. So I’m looking for an alternative.

Over the past day, my attempt to look for an a...
