Who Is Your Real Competition In The Writing World?

I've talked about markets and Amazon and publishing before. I've also talked about targeting your market correctly. The underlining question is: who is your real competition?

For many independent authors, the answer is, on the surface, only one person: me. Except this sort of thinking has its disadvantages, as almost anyone who has spent time on social networking sites can attest to. I

Guest Blogger Lorraine: On How to Deal With Critiques

Thanks Lorraine, for guest blogging with this wonderful commentary about dealing with critiques when you don't see yourself as a writer. Lorraine is a wonder writer who has done many 200,000 plus word stories online, so please give her a hand. We're very thankful to have her here on Living a Life of Writing.

First of all, I’m really not a writer. I’m trained as an artist and

The Facebook Experiment and What Doesn't Work for a Writing Blog

I've always been interested in the fact that some writers will proclaim that to get visitors to their blog means that they will make money with their books. I would assume this to be true for writers who have a large following on Facebook should, in theory have plenty of book sales under their belt.

I decided to go and test out the theory that a writer needs to have a platform on some social

Eight Ways to Make Money Self-Publishing a Book

I will be the first to admit that self-publishing isn't for everyone. It's a hard road to travel when there are other commitments in my life. The question I am asked about what I do usually involves the concept of money.

I won't be the first author to say that I made some dumb choices when it came to self-publishing. It has a learning curve I never thought would be as steep as it was. I can

The Publishing Possibilities are Endless

Publishing anything is one of the hardest things a writer can do. The possibilities are endless when it comes to living a life of writing- or publishing.

It does come with a price. There is always some sort of work to be done, and you can not simply fit back and enjoy the money. There is someone who needs your writing skills or your experience when it comes to publishing. It is your book

Experience Counts: Dealing With Blogs, Websites and Money, 24/7

It is not enough to have a blog and a website to earn money. It is not enough to have some semblance of social media presence when you are an author. There is a lot more at stake than a few dollars.

I have paid a lot more attention to my website in the last few months than I have in a long time. I might want to say that experience counts for something, but I would be lying. Experience

Ken Preston: Paths To Self-Publishing 2007 and Now

The
path to publishing success, one book at a time.

I
published my first book, in paperback, in the summer of 2007, four
months before Amazon released the first generation Kindle in the US.

The
publishing world has changed a hell of a lot since then.

Caxton
Tempest at the End of the World
has been out of print for a few years now, but you can still buy a
copy from a private seller on

When You Talk All I Hear is Blog Blog Blog...

When
you start writing for a blog it’s a lot like a gateway drug... or so I’d
assume. Having never actually had any experience with drugs or anything like
that, I can tell you that blogging quickly becomes an addiction and a frame of
mind. Alternatively, you could think of a blog is an outlet for expressing your
feelings or spontaneous ideas much like Twitter. The only difference

My Experience with Social Media and Book Promotion

It's not uncommon for a self-published author to want to promote their newly published book in some way- oftentimes too much.

Most authors, if they are self-published or not will say that one of the most important things that they need to do is promote their books. Enter social media. It's not that hard to set up a Facebook page or to set up a blog, or even a twitter account. It's simple,

Breakout Blogger

A couple years ago blogging was a foreign
concept to me. I had read the occasional travel blog by a friend, but the idea
of an ongoing blog seemed rather daunting. I also didn’t have much faith in
myself as a writer or my ideas. But I was lucky, because someone did.

I met the talented Rebecca Emrich at a
mutual workplace and our personalities instantly hit it
