Writing on the Backs of the Masters

There are so many ways for writers to write well, improve their writing, and publish more books, but writers often forget that a part of writing is being passionate about the topic they write about each day. They have to edit and make a marketing plan and have it published after they write. The suggestions of writing classes are to continue writing until—something magical happens. What that "

Influence and the Beatles

There aren't many people who would argue that the Beatles have influence. Even fewer still would argue that they have never heard of them. They are the most successful rock band of the 1960s—possibly of the twentieth century.

I would also say the twenty-first, but since there is much of this particular century left, I won't. Their music inspired a generation- and that is influence— in both

The Art of Songwriting

What every writer can learn from a songwriter's process

It's interesting that no matter how much our blog tries to be broad in its scope and appeal, we inevitably end up catering much of our commentary and advice to novelists. This is rather hard to avoid considering most people who call themselves "writers" are those who write novels, short stories, or articles. Poets, lyricists

Music: Food of love, Emotion

A science nerd's perspective on hearing and emotions

I asked my friend the other day how she experiences music (the question was purposely ambiguous). She responded very simply, "I hear and feel it". This may not sound all that profound to most people, but for me it was a reminder of the symbiotic relationship music has with our emotions. Moreover, as a physiology and anatomy

You Can Make Money Blogging If You're Willing

How can you make money blogging if so many people use a form of ad-blocker on their websites? How is it possible to get the most information to improve your website or your blog if Google Analytics tells you only half of the story?

The question came up as we were discussing how to improve the overall feel of this website. Since most people do come and read, but don't comment on here as often as

Taking the Time to Improve Your Writing With a Musical Example

Writers need editors, and editors need to improve the writer's work so people will love their writing. The same holds trues with any art form, and Sister Act has one of the best examples I can think of.

These ladies can't sing, they don't (it turns out) have the practice they need to sing this song with some sort of professionalism- youcan see it in the eyes of their listeners.

Baby Everything is All Write?

I want to have a book published very soon. Whenever I mention that I have published a book, most people have that reply.

The beauty of writing is that any person can do this, but the challenge is not many can finish it, or can even learn to improve. I was watching Mr. Holland's Opus, and the music is the one thing I love about this movie. Then came "the scene" that hit me hard.

I normally

Joining the Mile High Club

A writer's guide to flying

A few days ago I set off for my first visit to the great and beautiful west of Canada from Toronto, Ontario. It was somewhat of a spontaneous flight, having only decided it and booked it the day before. For those who know me on a more personal level, this is rather uncharacteristic move to make, especially when it comes to flying. The number of times I

What is the Hidden Cost of Self-Publishing?

What is a hidden cost of self-publishing?

The time and energy it takes to write and publish anything worthwhile.

That's one example which is a hidden cost publishing. It's not a bad cost, but there are others which can be more deadly to a writer who wants to succeed. There are both financial and emotional tolls that can be quite unexpected.

Some of these more visible tolls are

Does This Math Work for Blogs?

This writer's question from an email is simple: they asked that if they write and publish 50 blog posts and get $1 a day from that, then logically this means that by writing 5,000 of them in a short time span- a few months- they would make $100 per day.

I suppose one can't argue with logic, at least mathematically speaking, and they are right about their numbers. If you have published 50
