The day was grey. Her mood was black. Circles Interlocked on Book Hooks #romance

From adult contemporary - Circles Interlocked -

Scene Set - Julie is visiting Robert at his hideaway cabin and she's in a bit of a mood.

Julie sat on the edge of the couch, staring out the front window. She watched the raindrops run down the glass then form little rivers which puddled on the window ledge and dripped over the edge like a miniature Niagara Falls. The day was grey. Her mood was black. She hated Robert.Sipping her black coffee, she grimaced. Instant. With as much contempt as an angry teenager, she rolled her eyes. No civilized human being would try to survive in such primitive conditions.

Circles Interlocked - Having been betrayed by the man she assumed she was destined to be with forever; Julie Anderson slapped Robert Holiday in an angry ending to their brief love affair. Heartbroken that her love affair didn't end with the fairy tale Happily Ever After, Julie leaves town to pursue her dream of being a dancer. As fate has a curious sense of humor, eight years later, they wake up in bed together. Now it is up to love to fix what time cannot mend.Amazon Print

On Paid Leave - A Shawn Angel Mystery, Book 1, by Beth Mikell, # Mystery, #Women Sleuths

ON PAID LEAVEA Shawn Angel Mystery Book 1Beth Mikell
                                                        Genre: Mystery/Women Sleuths

Death is final. Murder is unforgivable. Bottom line: I was tired of it all…

Suffering from PTSD with a snarky view of life, Detective Shawn Angel is forced to face her internal demons. As she heads out of town for some R and R, she finds herself yanked into a hometown mystery. A missing person and a murder doesn’t make for a relaxing vacation, but hey, chocolate could be her mental salvation. Confronted by her past love, Shawn must surrender her pride and consult on his case, yet he complicates matters in his no-nonsense manner. Their reunion is short lived when a murderer finds her, and beating the odds becomes number one on her bucket list.

“You froze my boxers?”

I shrugged. “That’s what you get for ratting me out,” I said, thumbing toward Leo, who had the wherewithal to nip my digit, and then smooth a kiss over my skin. My toes curled, damn him. “Next time, keep your trap shut. Just sayin’!” I moved a little away from my man-crush before I forgot decorum and jumped him in the kitchen. Manners were key.

“Cruel, woman,” Hernandez said, shaking his head. “Seriously, couldn’t you come with something else?”

He took the bowl of frozen heroes from the freezer, setting it on the counter. Iced Batman and frozen Captain America shorts clunked with a thud. I hope Cap didn’t mind the refreeze?

Shamus offers a gift. Is it a red tulip? Friday Snippets has quirky romance - Red Tulip #FridaySnippets

From my quirky little flash fiction romance - Red Tulip

Scene set: Darcy is on a dinner date with Shamus at his mansion.

Shamus stood next to an open door. "My grandmother's library."The aroma of wood polish and old books nudged my nose before I stepped into the room. I have seen this room only in my imagination. Bookshelves reached floor to ceiling, every available inch of shelf space was covered by a book. Stacks of volumes were mounded on tops of small tables. A desk on the far side had three piles and one more on the chair accompanying it.I turned and hiccuped. Before was a fireplace were two worn chairs with small footstools. A table rested next to each one, just big enough to hold a cup of tea while one sat in the chair and lost themselves inside a novel. But it was, again, the painting that grabbed my attention. It was me. Only not me. Someone who looked like me a long time ago."Please. Sit." He indicated one of the chairs. "I can explain."My gaze riveted to the picture, I sat across from him as Reginald settled at my feet."That is my great grandmother, Darcy McTavis. Originally Darcy O'Flanahan.""Darcy?" I gulped. The woman sat on a brown sofa doing embroidery work. The saying she was finishing read - I will love you until the twelfth of never. She wasn't looking at her work. Instead, she seemed to be staring at me and there was a mischievous twinkle in her eye."A long time ago, Darcy and Shamus lived in a little village on the northern coast of Ireland. They fell in love. An old family feud barred them from marrying. Darcy agreed to follow Shamus to America. It was a great sacrifice for her to leave, but she loved him. It's been said, that the day they wed, all the bells in their village in Ireland rang."He leaned forward. "When Shamus began to court Darcy, he offered her a red scarf to keep her neck warm on blustery days."Standing, he smiled and stepped closer to my chair. "To start our courtship, I offer something to bring a moment of childish delight into your day."Shamus reached behind my chair. "Will you trust me enough to close your eyes and hold out your hand?"Without a moment of hesitation, I did as he requested. I felt his hand press my fingers close. "Open your eyes."His twinkling gaze and smile filled me with joy as I stared up at a red balloon.

Blurb - Darcy O'Calahann, a junior gardener from a small mid-western town, is trying to make her way in the big city.Shamus McTavis is a wealthy bachelor with a mysterious family past. Are Darcy's eyes playing tricks on her? Is she losing her mind? Or is there really a Red Tulip tying her and Shamus together?

Evan said magic isn't real #otherwords

On the 3rd Thursday of the month I've decided to post something different. I belong to a writer's group. Not an online one - one with real humans, meeting in a real room - interacting with each other!  Sometimes I can make the meetings - other times - I'm in belly dance class. Each month there is a challenge, which can be addressed either as fiction or non-fiction. I use the challenges, whether I make it to the meeting or not, as a writing exercise. So on the 3rd Thursday of the month, I'll post the literary results of my tackling the challenge. The challenge for this essay was -Do You Believe in Magic

Prelude"Mommy." Chrissy looked up with big blue, Mommy-melting eyes. "Evan said magic isn't real."Keisha ripped her attention from her daily perusal of the local want ads. "What? Uh…who's Evan?""A stinky boy." Chrissy pinched her nose."Boys aren't stinky." With a frustrated sigh, she logged off the library computer. They tell lies, break your heart and don't pay child support though. She smiled. "Magic's like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. It's real if you believe with your heart. Put your things away, please. Time to go.""Evan's just a big meannie." Chrissy shoved her crayons and homework into her book bag.The frustration in her daughter's voice tugged at Keisha's heart. She knelt and fiddled with Chrissy's jammed parka zipper. "What did Evan say? There. Let's go.""I said I wished on a star that you'd find a job. He said that wouldn't work. And I said, yes it would 'cause it's magic and he said…"Keisha bit back the pain that welled in her soul. If you only knew how many stars I've wished on. Damn the curves life throws at you. Being an unemployed, single mom wasn't on my to-do list. I've tried to make a life for you sweetie, but money's getting desperate. She hurried her daughter past the bus stop."But it's so cold out. Can't we take the bus?" Chrissy dragged her feet."No!" It came out harsher than she meant. Keisha stopped. "I'm sorry. We just can't today. I need to buy groceries. Let's walk quick as bunnies and I'll make you some soup and hot chocolate.""With little marshmallows?""Lots of them.""And sprinkles on top?" Chrissy giggled."Yuppers.""Sprinkles." Chrissy skipped down the sidewalk, leaving trails in the snow. Keisha hurried to keep up with her. What was she going to do? No job. Bank account getting desperately low. She couldn't ask her parents for more money. They had their own financial worries.Chrissy skidded to a stop. Keisha swerved to avoid running into her."Mommy." Her daughter's eyebrows arched high on her forehead. She covered her mouth with her red mitten hands. "I think the snow's alive. There." Chrissy crouched low then crept towards the small snow bank.A whimper drifted up from behind it. Keisha leaned over her daughter and peered down. Tucked between a garbage can and a recycle bin was a small ball of fur."Puppy-y-y-y" squealed Chrissy."Ssh. You'll scare her." Keisha lifted the puppy. "A tag. She doesn't seem hurt. Oh, she's shivering." She slipped the dog inside her coat and pulled up the zipper. "There's a vet a block or so that way.""Can we keep it?"The hopeful tone in her daughter's voice was another stab to her heart. "Oh, honey. I wish we could. But this is someone's puppy and they're going to be sad and worried about her.""They mustn't have loved her if they let her run away. I'd never let my puppy do that." Chrissy stomped though the snow.Keisha snuggled the pup close to her belly. Strangely, it reminded her of carrying Chrissy before she was born. The desire to protect. The unwavering love. The overwhelming fear something bad would happen. The veterinarian's OPEN sign glowed in the twilight. Chrissy held the door then followed her mother inside. Keisha glanced around. No receptionist behind the desk. No people waiting with their pets. In the distance, barks and howls filtered through the walls. She lowered the zipper on her jacket. The puppy wiggled until its head popped out.A side door opened. She turned, readying to explain. A jolt of dizziness washed over her. Her knees weakened. A strong hand guided her to a seat."I'm so sorry." Keisha rubbed her forehead. "It's so cold out and so warm in here." She looked up. The dizziness returned. Was it the heat or the emerald green eyes staring at her?"We found a puppy." Chrissy pushed past the vet and rubbed the dog's head."That's Bagel. My son's puppy. How can I thank you?"The sound of his voice made Keisha think of melted chocolate. She looked past the vet at the Receptionist Wanted sign. "I really could use a job. I'm fabulous with people and computers.""And animals." His eyes twinkled. "Job's yours. You can start tomorrow."Chrissy skipped around the office. "See Mommy, it worked. I wished on a star and you found a job. Ptth to Evan. Magic isreal."

Spotlight on - 2 Broads Abroad: Moms Fly the Coop by Deborah Serra & Nancy Serra Greene #humour

photo 2-Broads-Abroad-Banner.png photo 2-Broads-Abroad-Cover.png Title:  2 Broads Abroad: Moms Fly the CoopAuthors:    Deborah Serra & Nancy Serra GreenePublished:  November 6th, 2015Publisher:   Library Tales PublishingGenre:  Motherhood Synopsis:When sisters, Deborah & Nancy, discovered that motherhood was a temp job they decided to run away from home. After packing up that last kid for college, and facing the sad stillness of their suddenly quiet homes, they decided to leave the country. 2 BROADS ABROAD: MOMS FLY THE COOP is a funny, irreverent, occasionally poignant travel tale of their impulsive road trip around Ireland. In this witty warm-hearted adventure, they experienced some of Ireland’s quirkier history while sharing universally relatable stories of maniacal school coaches, neurotic neighbors, and tiger moms. Having kicked that empty nest into their rearview mirror, the sisters took off careening down the wrong side of the road, making questionable choices, getting trapped in a medieval tower, sneaking Chinese take-out into a famous cooking school, drinking way too much, and gaining a changed perspective on their lives ahead.

 Excerpt -

“Your youngest is leaving for college? Aw, empty nest?”  Then, sappy eyes followed by a plaintive grin and, “What will you do?”Before my sister and I decided to run away from home we were bothered by that question.  There was something minimizing about it, minimizing and not completely untrue. Motherhood had been so deceptive, the greatest paradox in life: every single bleary-eyed day felt a month long, and the years went by in an instant. They flashed by like lightning and left a desiccated scorch mark wearing my clothes.  It was disagreeable to imagine what life would be like childless:  there would be the family tree, and there would be the mom who’s the center of the family tree, standing leafless, bare (and it has been a while since I looked good bare). There was some solace as I glanced around me to see my younger sister, Nancy, would be standing there bare as well.  We were embarking on this progeny-shedding calamity simultaneously as both of our youngest daughters, Nicole and Olivia, were leaving for college the same week.  I knew that Nancy hadn’t really focused on it yet.  And then, we met at Fashion Island in Newport Beach near her home to get a birthday gift for our mom. We ran into two of Nancy’s neighbors, Vicki and Susan.“Nancy,” Vicki asked, “doesn’t Nicole graduate from Corona Del Mar High School this June?” “Yes,” Nancy said.  “She’s going to the University of Washington.”“Oh,” Susan lifted her eyebrows, “you must be devastated.”“What?”  Nancy looked confused.  “No, actually I was happy for her.  She worked really hard. It was her first choice school.”“But so far away!” Susan added in that annoying singsong tone.Nancy shifted her feet, a move I knew well as her sister.  It was something she always did when she was being told something she did not like to hear.“It’s not that far.” Nancy said.“It’s a plane ride. You need an airplane to see your daughter.” Susan said loudly.“Yeah.”  Nancy turned to me in an effort to change the subject. “You remember my sister, Deborah?”“Of course.” Vicki smiled.  And we exchanged hellos.  Vicki seemed normal, but I had an inkling that I might have to slap Susan.  Susan continued on with her one thought. “With your son gone already, and soon Nicole, well, Nancy, I guess you’re all alone now.”Nancy shifted her feet again. “I’m still married, Susan.”“Sure.  Sure.  Right.  So that’s better than nothing, huh?”Nancy and I both froze.  Did she just say that?“You know,” Vicki tried to cut off Susan, “when Terrie’s youngest left she bought a Chihuahua puppy.  Cutest thing you’ve ever seen.  And the Walkers gave a room to an exchange student from Sweden,” she explained happily.Nancy nodded. “That sounds like a good plan.”Susan opened her mouth to speak again and I wasn’t sure whether I should just smack her now and be done with it, or let her continue.  I made the wrong choice.“Remember Pam Winthrop?” Susan leaned in. “When her son left she started eating a pint of Ben & Jerry’s every day until she put on 60 pounds. Sad, really, tragic. Even her kneecaps were fat.” Then Susan turned to me, “So, Deborah, isn’t your youngest graduating, too?”“I’m leaving the country,” I said.Susan cocked her head. “What?”“I’m leaving the country,” I repeated matter-of-factly.“So am I,” Nancy said. I looked at her.  I saw the decision in her eyes. “I’m going with Deborah.  We’re taking a long trip together – a sisters trip.”“You are?” Susan sounded a little thwarted, which Nancy found gratifying.“Yup, in the planning stages.” Nancy smiled at Susan who was clearly disappointed that we were not miserable as anticipated.  “Nice to see you though, Susan, Vicki.  Got to go. In the middle of booking flights and stuff. So much to do!”We turned away and strode with purpose toward the door.  I whispered, “Susan’s a real gem.”“She did me a favor.”“Yeah?”“I’ve been so busy I just wasn’t thinking about it.”“And I haven’t been able to think about anything else,” I said.  “When I’m awake in the middle of the night it runs over and over in my mind.”Nancy said, “When I heard that crap Susan was dealing, all of a sudden I realized, there’s no way am I plodding into that sunset with fat kneecaps carrying a Chihuahua.”
