My Insecure Writer's Support Group post for Aug. A dating profile - how hard could that be #IWSG

Link Back to IWSG
Insecure Writer's Support Group created by Alex J. Cavanaugh
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer's Support Group day. We share our thoughts - talk about our doubts and fears. Or we can offer a word of encouragement to others.
Co-hosts for this month are:  Tamara Narayan
Tonja Drecker
Ellen @ The Cynical Sailor
Lauren @ Pensuasion
Stephen Tremp
Julie Flanders

My newly separated friend decided to take the terrifying leap into the date pool. She joined a dating site and needed a profile.
Who you gonna call???
A writer!
Oh crap, that would be me. I'm the only writer she knows.

So, I agreed. Hey, she's my best friend. Before she separated and moved 5 hrs away - we went out for coffee every Wed evening and talked, complained, b*tched and laughed our butts off. First thing that was funny was - we went out for coffee - but neither of us drinks coffee.  She had tea. I had a Diet Coke or hot chocolate if it was winter.

I asked the word count - 150-ish. What?!?!?!? How the heck could I define my friend in 150 words? Breathe. How hard can it be?

I did a quick Google search - biggest advice - don't use cliches (I'm drama free. I live life to the fullest). That's so annoying - cliches and me are as thick as thieves.

I let it rumble in my head for a couple of days and then bam - the profile wrote itself.

Now this is where the insecurity checks in. For an hour and 43 minutes, I checked my email every few seconds to see if she responded. When there was no reply, I went straight to SHE HATES IT!!!!  I didn't bother to consider I'd emailed it to her work address and she might actually - you know - be working.

Finally my email flashed. I was a bundle of nerves opening it. But -  she loves it. Damn writers's insecurities can be annoying as a bee in your bonnet.

I hope it brings her a friend - a companion - and possibly a lover.

Adding this little note - she went out on a date the other night with someone she met who'd read the profile I wrote for her :-)

Has a friend ever asked you to write something about them?

AUGUST 3RD IWSG QUESTION: What was your very first piece of writing as an aspiring writer? Where is it now? Collecting dust or has it been published?

My first piece of writing came about from a creative writing course I took in gr 10 (Sophomore yr for US readers). It was beyond horrible, but it was a completed book from - it was a dark and stormy night  to The End. Yes, I confess I used it. Had no idea it was a cliche opening. But I did modify it.

It was a dark and stormy night and Robert felt like committing suicide.

Yes, the book is published - it's an NA contemporary - Book 1 of Circles Trilogy - Dancing in Circles - the opening is now cliche free.

"Have you seen the new guy? We're talking stud material." Tricia sighed as she texted and walked with her friends down the school hallway. "That body...that face...those eyes."

About Taylor DawnA1VrrG7DKyL._UX250_ International Bestselling Author Taylor Dawn (formerly writing as C.D. Taylor) began writing as an item to check off her bucket list. She resides in the southernmost part of Illinois, right on the mighty Mississippi river. She enjoys the quiet country life with her husband, son and the many farm animals that make up the rest of the family. Deciding that farm life was just a little too mundane, Taylor began writing romance and fantasy to liven things up, so far so good. Before starting her writing career, Taylor entered the field of cosmetology. When she isn't writing, she can usually be found sitting around a table making people laugh. She has always wanted to be a standup comic. She loves pulling practical jokes, dresses up in a costume every Halloween and believes that dancing is the key to a happy life (even if you aren't a good dancer). She believes that life shouldn't be taken too seriously, we will never get out alive anyway. More than anything, she is a kid at heart, she doesn't believe in bedtimes, eating everything on her plate, or having ice cream only for dessert. Let me introduce Thorne Moore and Domestic Noir book, The Unravelling. #mystery

Let me introduce Thorne Moore and her new book, The Unravelling.
Please tell us everything about your latest book. The genre. Who are the main characters? How long did it take to write? Was there a period during the writing of the story where you sat and stared at the screen because what your characters just did surprised the heck out of you? How did you pick the title? Who designed your cover? And feel free to add anything else here.
The Unravelling is a mystery novel. I could call it a crime mystery, but even though my main character, Karen Rothwell, embarks on a mission to uncover the truth about a crime, it’s in no way a whodunit. It’s been described as Domestic Noir, which I rather like. There is certainly plenty of Noir in it, though, I hope, some humour too.At 45, Karen Rothwell suddenly remembers a girl she knew at school. Serena Whinn. She now recalls Serena as a little angel on earth, the lodestar of a clique of golden girls and the object of Karen’s childhood crush. But if Serena was so all-important to her at the age of 10, why has Karen obliterated her from her memory for 35 years? She becomes obsessed with finding Serena again, and it becomes obvious that obsession is just one of many problems afflicting Karen. She has been damaged by something that happened in the past and it is touch and go whether the unravelling of the truth will set her free or unravel her completely, but once she’s started, she can’t stop. In her pilgrimage to her past, she tracks down the other golden girls who had surrounded Serena – Ruth, Barbara, Angela and Denise – and she finds that they are just as damaged, just as haunted by the past. She needs to get to them all to make the mystery add up, but it gradually dawns on her that there is another person, at the very heart of the equation, who should never have been forgotten. The characters were easy to create. I gave them names and faces, in my head, and just let them develop as they wanted. None of them are based on real people, unless… I am a bit disturbed to realise how easy it was to get into Karen’s head. There can be a liberating joy to being mad. I haven’t given a precise label to her mental condition, since Karen herself pours scorn on labels (she prefers the clinical term ‘out of her tree’), but I don’t know what it says about me.I can’t remember how I came up with the title. While I was writing the book, I just thought of it as Searching For Serena. Then at the last moment, it was suddenly The Unravelling and nothing else made any sense. The cover was provided by my publisher, Honno.

Have you written other books? Their titles and genres.I’ve had two other novels published, both in the same genre, both involving time slips that compare delusions and misconceptions of the present day with the actual reality of the past.A Time For Silence, published by Honno in 2012 Motherlove, published by Honno in 2015
Plotter or a pantster?  Why does this work best for you? Both. I always know what it’s going to be about, how it’s going to end, and, in general terms, the route to get there. But I certainly don’t plot things chapter by chapter. I set up a scenario, I create the characters, and if I’ve done it well enough and they are convincingly real to me, their thoughts, words and deeds will automatically make the story happen as required. If they don’t, and head off up a different route, then I have another look at my outline map and wonder if that’s what needs tweaking. I’m not a writer who composes and polishes each chapter in turn, before moving on to the next. I take a run at the whole thing, get it in the bag, and then concentrate on editing. Often major editing, with plenty of slash and burn, new chapters, new episodes, new characters if required, so I suppose you could say that the first draft is really a detailed plotting exercise, and the revision is where the real writing is done.

Short question time.Favourite TV show? Forbrydelsen – The Killing – especially the first one. Brilliant. That or Fawlty Towers.
Most romantic place you've visited?Venice: romantic, exotic, fascinating and faintly sinister.

If Hollywood called, which actor should play the hero or heroine in your book? Uma Thurman? Though I can’t really see it in Hollywood. A three-parter on BBC 2 perhaps.
Three things you'd want on a deserted island. A very good knife, a mosquito net and Baldrick – he’d be sure to come up with a cunning plan.
Which would you choose – a knight in shining armour or a roman gladiator?Knights were just gormless thugs, so it would have to be a gladiator. Preferably Spartacus. Someone into revolution and challenging the system.
Favourite thing to do on a vacation?Visiting gardens. I’m a hopelessly uncommitted shopper – I lose the will to live after half an hour. I can enjoy sitting on a beach, watching the waves break for a while, as long as there’s a picnic involved, but I couldn’t just lie on the sand from dawn till dusk doing nothing. I would, however, be happy wandering around Great Dixter or Bodnant from dawn till dusk.

If you could meet one famous person – past or present – who would it be? Why?Jane Austen. What do you mean, why? I sometimes ask her opinion of the present day. I think she’d be very amused by cat videos on YouTube.

Any last comments – ideas – your blurb or excerpt. Here’s the opening passage of The Unravelling. She is here. Somewhere.Don’t look. Not yet. She will be here still, after this.We approach the chapel through a garden where recent wreaths are on display, a couple of cypress trees strategically positioned to mask the brutal stub of the crematorium chimney. Benches for the bereaved are banked by pale roses, with a few ornamental trees. They may have been planted for their spring blossom, but it’s autumn now, and there is no blossom, just hints of anonymous fruit. One drops as I pass, rolls across the grass, over the verge and onto the gravel…And in an instant, I am back, on an icy January night, watching an apple dropping and beginning to roll. Starting the chapter that demolished my already ruinous world. An apple rolling into darkness, and the unravelling begins.
And here’s a quote to leave dangling…“We’d met in the street, on Christmas Eve, to take presents to a new, sizeable mouse that seemed willing to hang around in our presence. On reflection, I think it was a rat.”

THE UNRAVELLING BY THORNE MOORE
Genre: Domestic noirRelease Date: 21 July 2016Publisher: Honno PressFrom the Top Ten Bestselling Author of A Time for Silence
The Unravelling
When they were ten everybody wanted to be Serena’s friend, to find themselves one of the inner circle. But doing so meant proving your worth, and doing that often had consequences it’s not nice to think about – not even thirty-five years later.
Karen Rothwell is randomly reminded of an incident in her childhood which just as suddenly becomes an obsession. It takes her on a journey into a land of secrets and lies; it means finding that gang of girls from Marsh Green Junior School and most importantly of all finding Serena Whinn.

A picture Perfect Novel - Take Two by Traci Hayden #romance

TAKE TWOA Picture Perfect Novel

by
Traci Hayden

Cover Designer: JC Clarke @ The Graphics ShedOfficial genre of book: Contemporary Romance

Beth Huntley, photographer and devoted bachelorette, doesn’t believe in true love. Too much hurt and disappointment has left her hiding behind the camera. All she can see is a black and white world through the lens.

William Lorde, widower and father, was once an open and carefree man. The loss of his wife has left him wrapped up in the needs of his little girl. He can no longer see the colors of the world as he struggles each and every day.

What happens when these two similarly different people meet and help each other to step out of the world they’ve created for themselves? Will they find a love that helps them heal from the past, enjoy their present and create a beautiful future?

I woke the following morning to the sound of the ocean crashing against the beach. I was still wrapped in William's embrace, my head resting on his shoulder. His breathing was even and soft as he slept.

I was too comfortable to start the new day. Looking around without bothering to lift my head, I located our clothes, neatly folded on the other chair under the cabana. Heat rushed to my cheeks. Who had done that? And when had they done it?

William stirred beside me. "Morning, love." His voice was rough with sleep.

"Morning," I whispered, not sure if our mysterious housekeeper was still nearby.

He was immediately focused. "Beth, what's wrong?"

It was impossible to hide anything from him now. I was an open book now and he was my reader.

"We had a visitor," I said, pointing at our neatly-folded clothes.

He relaxed back into the chair. "Oh, Beth, we're grown adults. We didn't do anything the rest of them haven't done."

He was right, but it wasn't something I was so open to having everyone know. "But..."

"Relax, Beth." William consoled me. "Are you regretting it?"

I was shocked at his question. "No, never!"

"So don't be embarrassed. It's a natural part of a relationship," William chuckled. "Stop over thinking everything."

I hid my face on his chest. He was right; he was always right. How could I doubt what had happened between us? We’d both been ready, and I was sure a few people up at the house were curious why it hadn't happened sooner. I had to stop over-analyzing everything.

A different thought crossed my mind. "Oh my god, William!" I jumped up, scrambling for my clothes.

"Beth? What?"

"My camera!" I cursed as I yanked the tank top from the folded clothes over my head.

"Where did you leave it?" He sounded concerned, knowing what my equipment meant to me.

"On the beach, before we went into the water last night," I yelled as I hopped out of the cabana, still attempting to get my other leg in my shorts.

We spent the next twenty minutes searching the beach. My anger quickly turned into horror as reality sunk in. My camera was gone. Had someone taken it, or had the ocean claimed it?

William tried to comfort me as we trudged up the path to the villa. "All those photos... the airport, the flight, the first photos of Jamaica, they're all gone, William." I was more upset over the loss of the photos than the camera itself.

Voices were audible from the kitchen as we stepped through the patio doors. The aromas were incredible, but weren't enough to lighten my mood. Most people would be upset about the camera, but even if it was my favorite, and worth a ridiculous amount of money, it was the loss of so many memories which upset me.

Jude came out of her bedroom and stopped short when she spotted us. She glanced towards the kitchen as she rushed towards us. She wrapped her arms around me, and whispered loud enough so William could hear her, "Everyone thinks you went for an early walk." I stiffened, unsure how much she knew. "I put your camera in your bedroom." She chuckled as she stepped back. As she turned, she reached out and tugged on William's shirt. "You really do pack neatly."

I stood motionless, completely stunned and my body turned to lava with embarrassment. Just before Jude turned the corner to the kitchen, she glanced over her shoulder. "By the way, William, you should get a tan on that ass."

My love for books began at a very small age. I lived inside the many worlds the local library could provide. The characters within those pages were my companions and my support when I needed someone most.

My imagination began to soar as I grew. I began writing small poems as a teenager, but never thought much about publishing or expanding beyond put my words to paper.

After my children were born our love for a certain TV show fueled my love for writing. Using my children as inspiration, I began to write fanfiction, my children being the characters within the stories.

My passion for putting words to paper (or screen as is the norm now) has turned from passion to obsession. I've made some incredible friends through this journey and in turn, have become not only an author but a promoter and supporter for those whose imagination dreams characters and worlds that I can lose myself in.

I thank my precious children, my beautiful soul-mate and my forever sister and best friend for being my constant rock and support as I continue to walk this road called life.

Which code word did Darcy text to her friend? Flash fiction romance - Red Tulip on #Friday Snippets

From my quirky little flash fiction romance - Red Tulip

Scene set: Darcy and Shamus are on their first dinner date. He just gave her a red balloon.

"To mark the start of our courtship." He lowered his head for a moment. "If you'd care to pursue one?""Let's call me intrigued at the moment, and see where this takes us."Off in the distance, a discreet cough resonated. "Dinner is served."Shamus smiled and held out his hand towards the door. "Shall we?"Glancing down at my work clothes, I cringed. "I'm not really dressed for eating in a place like this. I'm more the takeout food type."Shamus raised one eyebrow. "Then I guess I have a surprise for you."With my fingers clenching my balloon string, I followed Shamus down a hall away from the front entrance. He entered what I guessed would be called a breakfast room. It was round, and the exterior was a wall of glass. Lush tropical plants filled the room. In the center, an oval, glass dining table was covered with a red tablecloth and brown dishes with chopsticks resting on small platforms. The lights were low as darkness was settling on the city and a waft of humid heat brushed past my cheek.Shamus pulled out a chair and tucked it under me as I sat. He suggested tying the balloon to the table leg, which I did as he settled into the seat across from me.The butler brought in a large brown bag, placed it in front of Shamus, and spoke to him in a low tone. Shamus nodded. "Yes, Hogkins. Enjoy your evening. No, I'll look after our drinks. Thank you."The butler bowed his head to both of us and exited as stealthily as he entered.Shamus opened the bag and reached in. "Hope you like Pad Thai. I've had such a hunger for it of late."My tummy rumbled in delight. "I love Thai food. Is there peanut sauce?"He held a small container. "Lots. I drown my Pad Thai with it.""I know what you mean.""Here." He pushed the container and the bag closer. "Why don't you put out the food and I'll get us drinks. Red wine? Diet Coke?"I glanced at the table and had a brief mental debate. "Diet Coke. For this evening."He tossed back his head and laughed. "Good idea. Keep clear headed. Oh, and don't forget to send another text. Don't want your friend calling the police."The heat of the blush burned my cheeks. "Well, I…it was only…well, because—"Shamus held up his hand to stop my stammering. "It's a brilliant idea. You don't know me and need to take safety precautions. I am not insulted. Two Diet Cokes, back in a moment."After digging my cell out of my purse, I keyed in the one word check-in, blanket, and stuffed my phone away. Had I used chill, my friend, Eliza, would have called the police. Tender was the signal for her to call me and say there was an emergency and I had to go. I imagined the smile on her face when she read blanket. She'd be happy I was having a good time. She was my closest friend, and she worried about me.

A Thought about giving or being an Example #mythoughts

On Thursdays I open my blog - to myself. My thoughts. My ramblings. My whatever.
On the final Thursday of the month I am going to post a motivational saying. Some words to rumble in the back of your mind.

lovesove.comAs a retired teacher I know this to be very true. To inspire our young - we must show enthusiasm for education and learning. The easy slide into apathy must be fought so that we can become the example that the future wishes to base their inspiration on.
