Insecure Writer's Support Group created by Alex J. Cavanaugh
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer's Support Group day. We share our thoughts - talk about our doubts and fears. Or we can offer a word of encouragement to others.
Co-hosts for this month are: Tamara Narayan
Tonja Drecker
Ellen @ The Cynical Sailor
Lauren @ Pensuasion
Stephen Tremp
Julie Flanders
My newly separated friend decided to take the terrifying leap into the date pool. She joined a dating site and needed a profile.
Who you gonna call???
A writer!
Oh crap, that would be me. I'm the only writer she knows.
So, I agreed. Hey, she's my best friend. Before she separated and moved 5 hrs away - we went out for coffee every Wed evening and talked, complained, b*tched and laughed our butts off. First thing that was funny was - we went out for coffee - but neither of us drinks coffee. She had tea. I had a Diet Coke or hot chocolate if it was winter.
I asked the word count - 150-ish. What?!?!?!? How the heck could I define my friend in 150 words? Breathe. How hard can it be?
I did a quick Google search - biggest advice - don't use cliches (I'm drama free. I live life to the fullest). That's so annoying - cliches and me are as thick as thieves.
I let it rumble in my head for a couple of days and then bam - the profile wrote itself.
Now this is where the insecurity checks in. For an hour and 43 minutes, I checked my email every few seconds to see if she responded. When there was no reply, I went straight to SHE HATES IT!!!! I didn't bother to consider I'd emailed it to her work address and she might actually - you know - be working.
Finally my email flashed. I was a bundle of nerves opening it. But - she loves it. Damn writers's insecurities can be annoying as a bee in your bonnet.
I hope it brings her a friend - a companion - and possibly a lover.
Adding this little note - she went out on a date the other night with someone she met who'd read the profile I wrote for her :-)
Has a friend ever asked you to write something about them?
AUGUST 3RD IWSG QUESTION: What was your very first piece of writing as an aspiring writer? Where is it now? Collecting dust or has it been published?
My first piece of writing came about from a creative writing course I took in gr 10 (Sophomore yr for US readers). It was beyond horrible, but it was a completed book from - it was a dark and stormy night to The End. Yes, I confess I used it. Had no idea it was a cliche opening. But I did modify it.
It was a dark and stormy night and Robert felt like committing suicide.
Yes, the book is published - it's an NA contemporary - Book 1 of Circles Trilogy - Dancing in Circles - the opening is now cliche free.
"Have you seen the new guy? We're talking stud material." Tricia sighed as she texted and walked with her friends down the school hallway. "That body...that face...those eyes."
