Sautéed Duck Breast with Berry Sauce

“Alex, is it bad news?” asked Lisbeth. It was obvious from the look on his face that her question didn’t register. She just pointed to the crumpled parchment he held in his fisted hand.

“No, not bad news just unexpected. It seems His Majesty will be paying us a visit in the next several weeks.” His expression morphed into concern.

There were many issues facing Alex and Lisbeth, the least of which was the king’s appearance at Glen Kirk Castle but I’ll tell you all about that later. Lisbeth plann...

Where’s the Romance? Niagara Falls, Then and Now

Last week I went to Niagara Falls with my family–my husband, his mother, sister, aunt, niece, and my three teenagers. The nine of us climbed into two cars and headed up to the Falls from my husband’s family home outside of Buffalo, NY in search of the honeymoon capital and one of the world’s seven natural wonders.

The natural wonder worked for me. The sheer size of the Falls just on the American side was spectacular, and if you take into account the Canadian Falls as well, it was truly awe ins...

Witches and it isn’t even Halloween!

Double, doubletoil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble. Witches. The very word brings different images to mind from ugly old hags to real beauties. Witches delight us in stories by challenging our imagination and suspending reality for just a while. Oh if only I could wave a magick wand to get the housework done, cook dinner, and stop the clock and have more time to write!

Here is my list of who I think are the best TV or movie witches.

Bellatrix Lestrange –Harry Potter

Herminone Grange –...

The Lessons I Learned from a Gumball Machine

In 1962, there was a hardware store right down the block from my uncle’s grocery store, in the itty-bitty South Carolina town that’s the inspiration for Last Chance. And right outside this hardware store was an old-fashioned gumball machine. This particular gumball machine held treasures beyond bubble gum. Inside its clear glass bubble were plastic capsules that contained rings.

Fabulous rings made of shiny gold plastic with shiny red and green gems.

Oh, they were wondrous, those rings, and I...

Good fences make good neighbors

We have a huge yard. And a huge dog. This is Boomer. He’s a fat and somewhat lazy German shepherd beast—130 lbs of fat and lazy, to be exact. He might look scary, but he’s quite the baby. He’s afraid of the dishwasher when it’s open. He’s afraid of the laundry room. And he’s afraid of his farts.

However, despite his big-baby tendencies, some of our neighbors are a little afraid of him. His bark is quite ferocious, even though all he wants is someone to acknowledge him.

We have an Invisible Fenc...

Who Are We Rooting For?

During the Lenten season, my pastor announced she was giving up Scandal for Lent, said she kept asking herself “who am I rooting for and why?” In case you don’t know, Scandal follows the escapades of Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. “fixer “who is also having a long-term affair with the President of the United States.

I admit I watched the first season, but when it was revealed it was the President’s chief of staff that ordered the murder of an intern, I wasn’t sure I wanted to help put that “v...

On Location With The Waiting Game!

I’m thrilled to welcome Eve Devon to the Muse today. Eve is my “release mate” at Entangled Publishing. Both of us released suspense books a few weeks ago and have cheered each other on as we deal with the whirlwind of promo surrounding a new release. As we chatted, we dicovered both of our stories featured a strong connection to the story’s setting. Intrigued by the idea of two authors on two sides of the Atlantic joined by so many common elements, we decided to host each other for a guest po...

Georgie Girl

It was just a year ago when our eyes met over the crowd. She nodded a quick hello then dashed away to catch up with the others down the trail. In that one instant, she captured my heart forever. My weekly walk companions saw it too.

A week went by and again it was group walk day. My anticipation at seeing her again was electric. My husband tagged along because I think he wanted to see for himself what all the fuss was about. Softy he is for the two we have, I knew it was foolhardy to wish her...

Summer Reading Bingo

It’s summertime and although the living may not be easy, it has at least slowed down enough for me to startworking onmy summer reading schedule. It started with my going to the local library to register for the summer adult reading program. Now, at my former library, I simply read (or listened to audio books) and recorded the time I spent reading in 15 minute increments. Once I reached eight hours of reading time, I turned my diary in and was entered for a drawing for a Kindle and other prize...
