The All American Road Trip

Ah, summer, the time when each day seems to last a geologic epoch and people seem to move just as slowly. We’ve begun the season of the barbeque, jumbo snow cones with extra crème and gummi worms, baseball leagues, and the Summer Road Trip. And who hasn’t gone on a summer road trip? Whether it’s the basic family pilgrimage to Disney World or, perhaps, a coming of age road trip to summer camp and your first time away from home and family, we’ve all lived through them.

Most likely you’ve experie...

Welcome Month9 author, Dorothy Dreyer

My Writer’s Block Cures

I love writing. I love sitting down at my computer and typing away, transferring the stories and the characters that live in my head to the screen—or paper, if I’m away from the computer. I treasure every moment I’m allowed to do this. And with a full-time job, a husband and kids, and a house to take care of, finding time to indulge myself in this pleasure is a rare thing.

So what happens when I finally find the time and I don’t know what to write?

I hear this happens a l...

In Praise of Fathers

My father always made breakfast on Sunday mornings. It was, more or less, the only time he ever entered Mom’s kitchen. He was just a tad OCD in the way he prepared for his cooking. Everything had to be laid out with surgical precision. And he had his own “techniques” for doing everything. He was absolutely convinced of his own superior methods. Mom humored him because she loved him.

The menu on Sundays was always the same: Melon in season, fried eggs sunny side up, white toast, and kippers.

I d...

The Thoroughbred Makeover Project

I don’t have anything particularly wacky for Wednesday today—more, unusual. Plus, it’s a shameless promotion of

Jen and her re-trained OTTB Chief Magistrate at a recent three-day Event

sorts. All about my horse-crazy kid.

It’s not fair to call her a kid, really. She’s in her early 30’s, and she’s a bona fide equine veterinarian and all-around super-smart woman of whom I’m annoyingly proud. But, truth to tell, underneath it all she really is my horse-crazy kid.

I’ve made no secret of my love for a...

Winter has arrived on Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is done! Well, for this season at least.

Sunday night was the final episode, but the one everyone talked about was episode 9. No spoilers here but if you read George R.R. Martin or have seen the previous seasons you know this writer doesn’t believe in happy endings. Well there may be a happy ending for the last man or woman standing but many will fall, many actors will go on to other jobs, including wolves - I dare say, before winter cometh, and goeth. ;)

Someone put together a c...

MUSE MONDAY

Do you ever have trouble sleeping because something is bothering you? You toss and turn all night because this issue is so troublesome, then you wake up in the morning and think, WTF. Why on earth did this ridiculous issue keep me awake all night?

That was me the other night.

So many ideas, not enough time.

Cliché? Perhaps, but that’s what kept running through my head. At 2 a.m. And 3 a.m. And 4 a.m. I was so depressed and sad at the thought that I would never have enough time in my day/life to...

Our Love Affair with all Things Dystopian

—Tolokonov -DepositPhoto.com

Judging by the number of dystopian and apocalyptic movies hitting theaters, interest in the genre continues to hit new highs. I’ve been a fan of the genre for many years, starting with the incomparable H.G. Wells, Robert A. Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clarke. Stephen King’s, The Stand, is one of my top ten of all time. It got me to wondering what’s fueling this trend, especially with YA books. A quick search of articles that weighed in on the subject yielded a plethora...
