It’s rather amazing the changes that have occurred in technology in the past 20-odd years: Cell phones, androids, iPod Touch, the waxing of Tablets, the waning of pc’s; you name it. Granted, I’m an old broad, but I miss the time when I could slip the boss’ leash when I left the office on a mail run. At times I think (no, I know) we’re too darned connected.

But, it’s not all bad, right? When I consider all the advances in shopping that have come about in the last ten years, by the selection of...

Of Birthdays and Reunions

I am NOT here looking for wishes or presents, but today is my birthday. It’s not a momentous year, no special numerical significance, no new decade. I’m not yet aged (although I’m further along in the fifth decade than I like to admit) and I don’t feel old. Usually I don’t feel mature either, but that’s a slightly different topic. I mention it today because my birthday this year coincided with my 40th high school class reunion. And that truly did give me pause.

Forty years is a heckuva long ti...

Future Face of Man

Sergiy Tryapitsyn – DepositPhoto.com

For those of us who read and write science fiction, we’re curious how humans might look in the future. What has puzzled me for a long time is how that curiosity often trends toward a theory in which we all look the same. Is it possible, that in several thousand years, the vitality of human diversity, will meld to a singular mold?

Anthropological circles generally agree that Africa is the cradle of modern man, but a lot happened since common ancestors migrate...

Ending a Series by R.T. Wolfe

Our guest blogger today is R.T. Wolfe author of the Black Creek series. With the coming publication of the third and final book in the series scheduled for later this month, R.T. faced saying good-bye to her beloved characters. Read on for how R.T. solved her problem.

Good-bye can be bitter sweet. On August 28th, the final book in my romantic suspense Black Creek Series will be released. I’ve been living with the characters in this trilogy since 2009. It’s like saying so long to good friends....

Adventures in High School: The Joy of Poverty

In the ceiling, high above the seats of Gonzaga’s theater, where March King John Philip Sousa once directed the school’s concert band, was a student-shaped hole. I first noticed it when I woke up halfway through a lecture on the dangers of heroin.

The hole, I discovered, exactly fit Benny Doyle. He had been caught smoking in the crossover catwalk and made a poor choice in flight options. As he leapt from uneven beam to uneven beam, he stumbled, crashed though the plaster and caught his arms ov...

Checking In

Not too long ago I wrote a blog post on the top ten things I wanted to do this summer. It’s time to let you know where I am with them. I’ve made good headway on most of the them but I do have four weeks left!

1 and 2. Take a day trip/road trip somewhere nearby and hike,t chill out, or dine with friends. I should have dreamed bigger. More than a day trip, definitely a road trip. We went to Maine for a week; Booth Bay to be exact. We overnighted in Boston with our son in order to break up the se...

Last Chance Knit Along

A few years ago, a couple of my writer friends discovered that I knew how to knit but had given it up because, well, I was no darn good at it. I could crochet, but I had given that up too. I could also sew, but similarly it had been years since I’d taken my sewing machine out.

These friends were horrified. And they set about to change this state of affairs. On a daily basis I would get emails with photos of cute things I could knit or crochet. And then a few other people piled on, like the sen...

Spiders: Why They Scare and Fascinate Me.

Spiders fascinate and repel me. It’s like watching a train-wreck. You know its going to happen but you cannot take your eyes from the spectacle. Especially when a spider grabs its prey and wraps it up. *Shudder*

My husband doesn’t care for them either. He’ll battle rodents and other critters but he balks at spiders. At one time we had to take turns to dispatch one if we found it.

Recently (last week) I found a black widow lurking outside my back door. My daughter took a picture of it:

I have a...

WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION

As a writer, I don’t get to vacation much, there’s never enough time, and summer is full of conferences. After paying for conferences and the traveling, there’s never enough money or time for another trip. Most writers tend to take a few days before or after conferences to squeeze in vacation time, and this year, that was my goal.

I had just finished HAD TO BE YOU, turned it into my editor, and planned a trip to Colorado Springs for Rom Com—a reader’s conference.

My son is a student at Boise St...
