Lynda Bailey talks Inspiration

Lynda Bailey
Please welcome Lynda Bailey to Blame It On The Muse. She's always loved stories. Especially love stories. Growing up in the Midwest, she'd make up stories, usually to her favorite TV shows.
As she got older, the stories didn't relent. In fact, they only got stronger, the characters more insistent. She had no choice but to put it all on paper. It's an obsession. One that she loves. When not sitting at her computer, she spends her time working as a fitness...

So about that contest…

Are writing contests relevant? Worth the money?
Those questions surface periodically on loops and blogs, but I've heard from other coordinators that entries are still down, perhaps in response to the lingering effects of a crummy economy, but maybe because people aren't sure it's something they should do.
Whether a contest is relevant or worth the money depends on what you're hoping to accomplish. If you expect to get an agent or a book contract from them, you're probably...
Wacky Wednesday – A Blog Recco!

OK, while today's post fits my definition of wacky, it is a slight cop-out. I mean, I knew my day was coming and I knew I had to come up with something pithy and worthwhile to say, but when the ideas ain't there . . . So my blog today is about (drum roll please) another blog…
A few days ago I saw a link on Facebook that had me intrigued. Following the link landed me at a blog written by a forty-something, ex-military husband and father of three who also happens to read...

Thou Shalt Not Stop Reading

Books or electronic readers? So many predictions and pitting the poor creatures against one another. I, for one, think they can live harmoniously.
Why? Well, a little backstory first. No, I'm not peppering it in, you get a backstory dump right here, right now. Writers are readers. Often our reading
for pleasure begins to get way-laid as deadlines, revisions, social-networking-you-are-evil-incarnate, abound. I've had to be creative, but keep finding ways to study craft, read...

Re-Charge Your Creativity

Ever noticed how extremely proliferate, clever, and creative writers have equally creative and stimulating hobbies? Most NY Times best-selling writers boast of exotic pastimes which include fencing, martial arts, playing musical instruments, sketching/painting to name a few. How do they do it all?
Writers, in my humble opinion, are often creative in many areas not limited tothe written word. Look at Stephen King and his Rock Bottom Remainders band. Members include Dave...

Nostalgic Romance—Why Have You Never Heard of It?

I am tickled pink to be hosting a guest blog today, from the one-and-only Laurie Kellogg. Laurie is one of the most wonderful people I know, and equally important, she is a gifted author, and one of my dear Ruby Sisters — a member of the Golden Heart class of 2009. Today, she is celebrating the publication of her first book, The Memory of You, which is so wonderful ya'll should go right out and buy a copy of it right now. It will make you cry and laugh and it has a...

Three Dimensional Senses

A couple of popular artists, Julian Beever and Kurt Wenner, made their global mark by creating three dimensional pictures on sidewalks. Despite our intelligence knowing it is only a two dimensional slab of concrete, our eyes convince us it is three dimensional. Okay, I get it now. Writing 101, have to use the five senses for a three dimensional scene.
"Get in her head, dammit." How many times have I had that drilled into me by a trusted CP. Easier said than done. I...

Champagne and Ticker Tape

Welcome to "The Rancher and the Rock Star's" official release day! After the incredible, heart-warming response my sister and brother Musers (plus so many other friends) gave me last week when Abigail posted my R&RS pubbing story, this seems a little redundant. But, I couldn't think of a better place to offer up some virtual bubbly and have a virtual ticker tape parade than here, where I've been made to feel like part of a really special family of writers. I mean, there has t...
