It's All In The Head

Had a bit of a setback last week.  Happily in the company of my sister's mid-morning, my vision goes double.  I'm no stranger to blurred vision, most of it self-induced when cocktail hour becomes dinner, but 10 AM?  I turned to casually ask how much rum she put in the coffee cake, and her eyes goggled as if I'd called her something totally inappropriate (it's not something you do to my sisters, not if you want to live to see the next sunrise anyway).  Next I know, they're...

A Fishy Wednesday

As ya'll know I live with a fisherman.  He's kind of cute.  He's got a deep voice, a sexy beard, and more fishing tackle than a dog has fleas.

Living with a fisherman has benes.  He can bring home supper.  You can send him out to fish for hours at a time while you sneak off to go shopping or visit with girl friends.  In the coming apocalypse I figure we've got enough fishing line and hooks that we could probably go into the black market.

Recently he's taken up fly fishing.  I...

Does the Golden Heart Help You Sell?

It's that time again…daffodils? Yes…but I'm referring to Golden Heart and Rita Announcements. I remember the first time I heard of the contests…I was like, 'what the heck's the big deal?"

Well, then I went to my first National RWA and saw people decked in Oscar-worthy gowns to attend the announcement ceremony for the contests and thought..OH. WOW. It IS a big deal.

No doubt it gives one a credit to add to their query-cv, but I've often wondered, does it really help you sell?

So I...

April Fool!

I was up most of the night with a sick headache.  Please forgive me for this brief post!

Loafer , layabout, slacker, lazybones – all words that define my actions this morning. I'll give you another: slugabed.

Words are what writers do.  They are the tools of the trade, of our trade.

I have a friend whose husband is a contractor. She has stated that her husband spends a fortune on tools, usually to replace them because they sprout legs and walk off the jobsite. Words are like...

It's All Process

I've been reading various accounts of Tiger Woods' march back to the top of the Leader Board at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and what it means for golf, television ratings and Tiger.

In his column headlined You didn't expect this from Tiger? Tim Dahlberg, a national sports columnist for The Associated Press, commented "He conquered personal demons and he conquered swing demons. He did it in the face of intense scrutiny, insisting all along that it was part of the process and ...

The Grinch Wrote Romance by Grace Burrowes

There I was, toiling away at my computer early Monday morning, polishing a short written to go with my first Scottish Victorian. The phone rang, and what did I think?

I thought I was being hailed into an emergency child abuse hearing, which is regularly part of my job. My sentiments ran something like this:

"I do not want to go to court today. Please, for the love of Pete, can't I have one morning to buzz through 90 pages of Highland frolic? These characters have to fall in...

Visualizing Characters

There are "favorites" and then there are "keepers". A bona fide "keeper" to me is one I go back to; a book I have a physical pristine copy of and a "study" copy of on my bookshelf. If I'm forced to move in a hurry, the "keepers" go with. A "keeper" is one of those books I'd like to analyze from a writing standpoint, but I'm sucked in every time.

One such book, which I am re-reading for the fifth time, is The Heir, by fellow Muser, Grace Burrowes. Every time I read Westhaven's s...

Are You Hungry?

Have you heard the movie, Hunger Games, is now out in

theatres? Yes. Really. It is.

All joking aside, Livia and I made a movie date to see the
film and I must say I like what I saw. For those of you who do not reside on
planet Earth, The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, is a worldwide best
selling YA novel set in a post-apocalyptic / future civil war United States that
is no longer democratic, but instead has become an oligarchy. As a symbol of "the
Capitol's" dominance...
