Spotlight - A Gift of the Darkest Magic by Ashlynn Monroe

Clarissa's husband Matt is dying of cancer. They've tried everything that medicine has to offer, both traditional and experimental, and nothing's worked. Clarissa spends her days in the hospital, watching the man she loves slip closer and closer to certain death.
When her sister tells her she knows a way to save Matt, but it involves visiting a local club run by vampires, Clarissa is outraged that her sister would believe something so insane. But then she learns the truth.
Braden, the sexy and mysterious vampire who runs the club, does indeed have the means to save Matt, but he demands a high payment in return. He doesn't want money, her blood, or even her life…he wants something she never expected. Clarissa has a choice—spend twenty-four hours in Braden's bed or let her husband die.
But what she never foresaw was how much more the vampire would truly want after he'd given her the gift of the darkest magic.
Content Warning: infidelity, light bondage, anal sex, and rough sex
Excerpt
The quiet drip of the IV and the occasional bleep of the monitor were the only sounds in the dim hospital room. Clarissa Blair held the cold hand of her husband, Matthew. Matt's diagnosis of cancer, just after Christmas, had been a horrible surprise. His condition rapidly deteriorated. The vibrant forty-year-old lay reduced to a thin husk, wasting away in the small room on the fourth floor of Mercy General Hospital. Clarissa could only wait and mourn quietly. She'd tried to hide her pain and stay positive for Matt, but it was getting harder to pretend as he slipped closer to the end of his life.
Their twin seven-year-old daughters spent a lot of time with her mother. She didn't want them to remember their father as the corpse she saw each day when she came to the hospital after work. Her life was a cycle of working and grieving. She knew the girls missed her, but she just didn't have the strength to be there for them and keep up with the day-to-day battle of holding herself together. Matt was leaving them.
The sound of the door opening roused her from the dark, sad thoughts. She stood up and hugged the visitor. "Hi, sis."
Caren, her younger sister, breezed into the room smelling of sunshine and fresh air, in contrast to the stale stench of death she'd come to associate with her husband's hospital room. "How is he today?"
Her sister's sadness only added to the weight in Clarissa's heart. "About the same. The nurse said last night was tough, but he pulled through. He's a strong fighter." She knew the last words sounded bitter. He was the strongest man she'd ever known; she couldn't understand why he couldn't beat the disease ravaging him. His once handsome face was pale and sunken. Her Matt had left long ago, leaving the dying man in his place. Her Matt would never have abandoned her and their daughters as this man was doing.
For a long moment, Caren looked into her face. She knew Caren wanted to say something, but was holding back.
"Go ahead and say what's on your mind. You're always so afraid of saying something that'll make me cry. I'm past that stage now. Just talk, you're irritating me." She knew her shrill statement bordered on cruel, but she didn't care. What was the use of pleasantries when her whole life was over and she'd never be happy again?
"Sorry, sweetie," Caren whispered, laying a gentle hand on Clarissa's shoulder.
The simple act of kindness tore at her soul, making her want to lash out again. She shrugged off her sister's caring touch. The unwavering love in the deep turquoise eyes, the same shade as her own, sent a little stab of guilt through Clarissa. "I'm the one who should be sorry, but seriously just tell me what's on your mind."
Caren gave her a weak smile. "You know I love Matt too."
Clarissa nodded. Matt had no siblings. She'd married him when Caren was still in high school and he'd taken to her sister as if she were his own. "I know." She sighed.
"I think I know a way to save him, but I need your help," Caren whispered.
Clarissa's eyes narrowed. Her whole body began shaking. "How dare you!" She hissed at her beloved younger sister.
"Really. I mean it, Clarissa. I think I know a way that we can save Matt's life." She said the words with genuine hope.
"We've tried faith healers, herbs, expensive specialists, what more can there be? I can't believe you'd spout such bullshit. Especially when he's so close to…" She couldn't say "the end", but it was true. Her husband only had a few more weeks to live, maybe less. The doctors had made it perfectly clear. It was time to give up hope. She'd already picked out his casket and bought the plot. Matt was gone.
"I'm not pulling your leg, or giving you false hope. I saw it work!"

Spotlight - The Winter Creek Montana Series, by Theresa Stillwagon

(Book 1 of the The Winter Creek, Montana Series)
For some people ghosts are everywhere…
When rebuilding an old ghost town, a few ghosts shouldn't be a surprise. And for Jen Ferguson, history professor and psychic, it's par for the course. But ghosts aren't her main worry.
After a disastrous affair, which has affected her job at the college, Jen promised her grandfather—the most important person in her life—that she would stay away from men until the end of the semester. That's a promise she's determined to keep, but when she meets rancher Adam Craine, it becomes a struggle. Adam's sexy and flirty, and her psychic abilities are telling her that he might possess a very important quality the previous men in her life had been lacking…he can be trusted.
It's a daily battle for Jen to keep her hands off of him, but she believes she can do it…until two of Winter Creek's ghostly residents decide to up the stakes by possessing Jen and Adam's bodies. How can Jen keep her promise with these two passionate spirits interfering?
And if all that's not enough to deal with, now she's having premonitions of danger which could lead to the destruction of Winter Creek.
The Dressmaker's Dilemma
(Book 2 of The Winter Creek, Montana Series)
A ghost from Barb's past is an ever-present reminder that she’s not good mother material, so what happens when she falls for a man with a ready-made family?
Barb Grant is the resident dressmaker for Winter Creek, an old ghost town that's being rebuilt. But the town ghosts aren't the main thing that's causing Barb trouble. It's the pre-teen girl who suddenly decides she would make a good substitute mother. And the girl's father.
Wyatt Campbell has been the bane of Barb's existence since their first meeting. One minute the cowboy is pissing her off thoroughly, but then the next moment she's wanting to rip his clothes off and make love to him. When rumors start flying that he's a horrible lover, she can’t believe they could possibly be true. How could a man who can evoke so much passion be a bad lover? Her need to know the truth is the only reason she says "yes" to his date request. Her plan—have sex with him and then say goodbye.
Unfortunately, Wyatt has other plans. He wants a real relationship. But he comes with a ready-made family, and that scares Barb. A ghost from her own past keeps reminding her that she's not good mother material. She's made mistakes, mistakes that resulted in a child's life ending, and she can't ever forget that.
Could Wyatt be the one man capable of getting past her barriers? Or will Barb's past forever affect her life?
An Excerpt from Book 1 - Forgotten Memories

Jen grinned.
"Are your eyes closed?"
She laughed softly but did as Barb asked of her. Every dress this talented seamstress designed for her was always shown off in the same way. "Yes."
A moment later a soft hand encircled the top of her left arm while another hand landed lightly against her back. She allowed her friend to press her toward the small cramped area opposite her office desk and chair. A frozen touch slowly replaced the warmth of her friend's hand, and a hint of flowery perfume replaced the scent of her friend's earthier one. Honeysuckle flowed into the air around her a second later, a breeze of chilled wind moving past her skin into her interior being, making her dizzy with the aching familiarity of it. As she moved through the scent, closer to the old-fashioned Chinese wall, a strange iciness settled deep in her bones, freezing her feet to the floor.
She'd felt this profound, unnatural chill a few times before.
"Jen, don't stop now."
The strangeness deepened in her, and she brought her arms up to wrap them tightly around her upper body. "I'm freezing."
"It's not cold in…" Barb's hand dropped from her back but not from her arm. "Oh, it's that kind of cold."
"My little saloon girl is visiting with me again."
"So you're finally admitting she's a saloon girl?"
Barb's words seemed to come from a great distance as the cold around Jen intensified.
"I've been telling you that for weeks," Barb added. "What changed your mind?"
"She's a ghost that haunts a saloon."
"Yeah," Barb said. "You've always known that, but it never convinced you before."
Icy tentacles suddenly wrapped around Jen, like a frozen pair of snow-hardened gloves, before an eerie voice whispered, "He's coming."
"What?" Opening her eyes at the barely heard sound, Jen stared at her puzzled friend. "Did you just say something?"
"Are you all right?"
"Tell me you just said something under your breath."
"Sorry, Jen," Barb said lightly. "What's going on?"
The prickly eeriness left her system as quickly as it'd entered, bringing blessed feeling back into her freezing, stilled body. The hint of honeysuckle perfume lingered for only a few seconds before dissipating in the October Montana air.
"Jen?"
"Please tell me you heard a woman's voice just now."
"Are you telling me she actually talked to you?" Disbelief registered clear in Barb's wide, dark eyes. "All mine ever does is mess with my stuff."
"I've never heard her speak before." Jen frowned. "Maybe it was my imagination."
"So what did your imagination say to you?"
"He's coming."

Great week!
I had a seriously productive week. It's been a long time since I have felt like a writer with all the changes that recently happened in my life. But with things settling down once again, my muses are talking at top speed.
An idea hit me Thursday. Just the beginning and I knew it would be a short story. I went with it. Short stories are good, right? Well, I wrote that sucker in less then 24 hours. I have no idea how rough it is. I'm letting it sit for a few days before I open it up and read and do self-edits. I think I know already what route this story is going. I had the specific publisher in mind as I wrote it. So, we shall see if they like it. I know this book will have a follow-up book, making it a two book series I guess.
I also recently made the decision to try self-publishing. At least one book. Just to experience it and see how it works out. So, to much demand, I wrote the sequel to Sarah's Chase and its titled Sarah's Caught. I just got my cover art and its with an editor. More details soon I hope. Depending on how long edits take, I am hoping maybe to have it ready for release in August or September.
I also have the Bound By Pleasure galley in my inbox to get read and returned to my publisher. I can't wait to release this one. The cover is smoking and I think its a great and unique story. Though, I am partial. :)
But now, I really must get down and dirty with Opposites Attract (Hots Bods 4). I did get some work done on it last week, but not the dent I had hoped. But, I got another 3k added to it I believe. And a serious smoking sex scene between the two. And once again, these two are at one another's throats. Can't they make it easy for me and just love one another? Oh wait, they secretly do. :)

Spotlight: Maiden Behind the Mask by Tara Chevrestt #newrelease
Looking for something a little different than your usual romance? Check out Maiden Behind A Mask. Its written by a kick ass woman, Tara Chevrestt, who I can tell you, doesn't put up with anything.
When Catalina Rodriguez is attacked by a would-be rapist and rescued by the dashing Ricardo Garcia, she not only becomes more aware of the handsome man, but also vows that she'll never be a damsel in distress again. Using the timeless method of blackmail, she convinces her uncle to teach her to fight and becomes a masked crusader in the night, saving damsels from robbers and rough handling.
But scandalous rumors and dwindling funds force Ricardo and Catalina to marry. Not immune to each other's charms, their marriage starts fiery, but when one of Catalina's nightly escapades results in dire consequences, she is forced to spurn her husband's amorous advances…or reveal a secret that could turn him away from her forever.
Ricardo is not a man to be cuckolded or left in the dark. Is his wife having an affair with El Capitan, the masked savior? If so…they will both pay.
Amazon / Nook / Smashwords / Ruby Lioness Press
Excerpt She tore her gaze away from the horse and said firmly. "Cinco pesos. And only because this caballa has fire, not because of your terms. Selena, pay him."
Selena's hand shook, but the pesos were transferred to the dirty palm. The man laughed with glee, the crowd dispersed, and Catalina was left with a dirty, starving horse.
"We'll get you fed and cleaned up," she promised the horse, patting its neck. A cloud of dirt rose in the air, and Catalina struggled not to cough. "I shall call you La Reina, because once in my establo, I shall treat you like a queen. Your body may be beaten, but your spirit is not broke."
"Catalina?" Her maid's voice tentative as it interrupted her quiet chattering. "Whatever possessed you—"
"Fetch me a mozo," Catalina interrupted her. "Take the remaining pesos and fetch me a groom. La Reina is going to her castle." She wasn't offering more explanations than that. She didn't owe anyone an explanation. She'd done what was right.
As her maid turned to comply, heading toward the livery, a loud pffffht rendered the air. Catalina stared at the mare in surprise, aghast.
Selena froze and swung around to admonish her charge. "Senorita! Your behavior has been questionable enough this day. Mind yourself." She shook her head and her finger both before turning back the task at hand.
Catalina heard her muttering as she sashayed away. She was too surprised and too tired to defend herself, but the breeze picked up, and a waft of foul air assaulted her. Catalina immediately tugged a delicate, lace handkerchief from her sleeve and placed it over her nose as she glared at the horse.
La Reina snorted and pawed the ground. Catalina could swear the horse was laughing at her. She merely shook her head. "Dios mio, and you let me take the blame for that?"
Pffffhht. Pfffht.
La Reina whinnied and bared her teeth as though she was smiling.
About the author Tara Chevrestt is a deaf woman, a dog mom, a reader, and a motorcycle and airplane buff. She worked as an aircraft mechanic for eleven years before turning to a career in writing. When not chasing her dogs around the house (or writing about them!), she battles over her laptop keyboard with her alter ego, Sonia Hightower.
Tara never knows what a story is going to turn out to be. Whereas Tara writes historical or contemporary romance, humor, young adult, and even a memoir, Sonia pens erotic noir or bdsm. Be it a Tara or a Sonia book, you're sure to find something that interests you.

Guest Post - C L Raven on Disenchanted #newrelease
I'm so excited to have these two authors here and this great guest post. C L Raven is a pair of sisters who write together. C L Raven are two of the nicest women you'll meet. It was a year ago I joined twitter and they were one of my first friends. They are awesome and super supportive. Pop by twitter and see them @clraven.
Thank you Lacey for inviting us back on here! Ever since we released Gunning Down Romance on Valentine’s Day, we’ve been enjoying life as Indie authors. But one release wasn’t enough. We wanted more and we discovered releasing ebooks is a great way to keep us out of mischief (at least until we go out filming our next ghost hunting episode). So we wanted another project. As this year is the 200 year anniversary of the Brothers Grimm rewriting the fairytales, we thought we’d do the same. Unfortunately Twisted Sisters was too popular to use as a name, much to our annoyance. Then we discovered everyone else was also doing fairytales and the brightness of our rage convinced NASA there was a new solar system.
After seeing what Disney did to fairytales (actually we’ve never watched Disney stuff. We grew up watching Blood Beach and Snow Beast), we decided it was time fairytales were taken back to their original, gory forms. Gone are the helpless girls who sit around waiting for their prince to save them. When our Red Riding Hood encounters her worst nightmare – Prince Charming, she doesn’t steal his heart, she takes his head. And yes, the originals are very gory, quite horrific and after learning about them, we hope our lives are never a ‘fairytale.’
The opening story, Long Live the Queen is told from Snow White’s step mother’ s bitter point of view and is the funniest. It includes our favourite line, “a prince just happened to be walking through the woods? Why couldn’t it have been a bear?” We decided to do 10 stories instead of matching Grimm’s 80. 10 was bad enough! They’re a mixture of horror and comedy, sometimes both at once with a nice amount of sexiness to keep the heart rate racing. Once Upon a Nightmare is the darkest story. The woods that surround Red’s cottage are filled with nightmares, but it’s not the wolf the villagers have to fear.
We asked our friend Lizzie Rose to do Disenchanted’s cover for us. She painted it using her grandfather’s watercolours, which she hasn’t used since he died. We were honoured she deemed our cover worthy enough to use them on. We were stunned with the results. We knew it would be good, having seen her artwork before but when we opened the email, we sat there gasping like asthmatics. Then we realised an ebook didn’t do it justice. We’re now bringing Disenchanted out in print so we can sit there stroking the cover like a Bond baddie.
We asked our mate Ryan Ashcroft to do a book trailer for it, having made Gunning Down Romance’s ourselves in Movie Maker. It very nearly drove him insane. In fact, we logged each step of his meltdown live on Twitter for everyone to enjoy. But his loss of sanity was worth it and he produced a trailer that makes us proud. It’s amazing. We can’t stop watching it. We’re now worried Disenchanted doesn’t live up to the brilliance of the trailer and the cover!
And then we decided to play with Fate and launch Disenchanted on Friday 13th. We couldn’t resist it. And naturally, something went wrong. We’d filmed a launch video where we did a reading of Disenchanted at Cardiff’s fairytale castle, Castell Coch. The night before the launch, our slow internet connection told us it would take at least 8 hours to upload. So at midnight we were down Ryan’s house (half hour away) uploading it. Only to wake up on Friday 13th to find it had failed to upload. Ryan had to re-do it for us. Luckily that was the only disaster and the Facebook launch was a lot of fun. We even bought vegan wine to celebrate. We’d never tried wine before as we became vegan at 14. We joked about looking sophisticated before spitting it back into our plastic Halloween goblets. While we didn’t spit it out, we did pull some interesting faces. Think we’ll stick to Red Bull.
But Disenchanted is out now! These are ten broken fairytales that are definitely NOT for children’s bedtime.
Disenchanted Once upon a time, in lands far, far away, everyone lived happily ever after. Until now. If you thought you knew the fairytales well, think again. In a modern world without morals, where beauty does not always equal goodness and evil sometimes wins, the heroes of the legends learn the hard way that survival will take more than just a pretty face, and a handsome prince does not mean salvation. Ten broken fairytales that are definitely not for children's bedtime.

Manic Monday Update

Last week I finally accomplished something in my writing life. I finished Sarah's Caught, which is the short story sequel to Sarah's Chase. And I think I just might attempt to self-pub this one in the KDP program. I have someone working on the cover now and have been in contact with an editor. Now to see if I have the guts to do it.
I have started to plan out the middle to end of Opposties Attract (Hot Bods 4). Hopefully I will make a very big dent in that this week. After that, the skies the limit. Plan another series? Possibly. I know I want to write a full-length sweet romance. I'm ready.
Speaking of sweet romance. When you finish up this blog post, hit the HOME button at the top and check out what I did. Since I am not writing both sweet and erotic, I decided to break it up for my readers who are visiting so they can find just what they are looking for.
Thank you for popping by to read my weekly update! Hop on by and see Carrie Ann Ryan, Lia Davis, and Fated Desires as well.

Slowing Down
A year ago at this time I was writing Fool Me Once. I had already written Amber's Muse and it had been in several slush piles, rejected, and revised by me several times. Then when my story was accepted by the wonderful Beachwalk Press, I got what I call ... the writer's rush. Write as much as you can, as fast as you can. Produce more and more stories. So in almost a years time, I have published a good deal of novellas. And I am very proud of my back list. I love each and ever story. But, I think its time to slow down. It isn't about quantity. Its about quality. It also about learning and growth. My word count is growing. Amber's Muse was just under 15,000 words. And my longest to date, Finding is 30,000. My next goal is to make it to 45,000 and then hopefully soon hit full-length.
I have slowed down in my writing lately. One, the kids are home for the summer. And second, I just haven't felt like it. I think I did too much to soon. I was sucked into the world of publishing. I have tried different publishers, as well as taken on a proofreading job. There is so much to do in the world of publishing from PR, to editing, to proofreading, and writing. And everyone opens their arms so wide.
I've had to take a step back and look at everything. I'm doing way to much. I'm a writer and I want to be writing. I don't want to feel like I need to have a book out every other month to be someone. I want to write that book that sales great for many months, regardless of having a new book out all the time.
So, I am slowing down. Putting the flame out on the writer's rush. And just concentrating on the story. If it wants to get out 2,000 words a day, great. But if its only 500, that is great too. In the long run, its the quality that matters. Not the length or the amount. Just a good heart felt story that a reader will enjoy.
After finding the love of his life in bed with someone else, twenty-six-year-old Seth Reynolds wanted a fresh start and found it in Jamaica. Being a bartender at one of the island's exclusive resorts has its perks...not the least of them being a very sexy, older woman: Sylvia Radcliff. While she's determined to celebrate her forty-fifth birthday, Seth is equally determined to seduce the most enchanting woman he’s ever met.
Tropical Cougar is an Amazon Exclusive from Ruby Lioness Press
Excerpt :
Seth woke to the smell of eggs and coffee. Sylvia had ordered them breakfast.
"Get up, sleepyhead, breakfast is here," she said, crawling up his naked body.
"I would rather have you for breakfast, but you have a robe on."
"I couldn't answer the door naked, could I?"
"No, I guess not," he whispered, reaching to tug on the belt of her robe.
"The food will get cold," she replied as she playfully pushed him away.
Seth let out a laugh. "I don't care. I just need a taste. I'll make it quick; just trust me," he said as he hovered over her. He looked into her blue eyes and smiled when she nodded, giving him all the incentive he needed. He leaned down and kissed her lips before traveling down her body. He took each nipple in his mouth and sucked hard before he pushed her legs apart, and his tongue found heaven "Mmmm, you taste so sweet." He moaned into her warm flesh.
