25 Years of Moving the Conversation Forward: Cooking the Books with the Tiptree Motherboard
Twenty-five years ago (February of 1991, to be exact) at Wiscon, award-winning SF author Pat Murphy set out to recognize and celebrate works that explored and expanded the understanding of gender roles. The James Tiptree Jr. Literary Award was born. Today, three members of the Tiptree Motherboard join Cooking the Books to talk about lists, awards, bake sales, space
babes, jam, and James Tiptree Jr. Come for the history, stay for the food puns!

Book Bites: For Appearances, with Sonia Lyris
Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.
I met Sonia at the Rainforest Writers’ Retreat, just a few days before her debut novel, The Seer, arrived on the shelves. Today, she’s joining us to talk about appearances in The Seer.

“No,” says my first reader. “This man is the Lord Commander of the empire, so he’s not going to be eating cheese and meat and a hunk of bread for a working lunch. How w...

5 Things to Do When You Get Sick at a Writers’ Retreat
Augh this was so frustrating. Last week, I went to The Rainforest Writers’ Retreat, which I love and where I usually get a huge block of writing done.
Little did I know that the conference I’d attended the weekend before was home to ATerrible Crud that was slowly taking out my fellow east coasters. So when I finished my Rainforest Day 1 lecture and felt completely awful, I figured a nap would take care of everything.
I didn’t get out of bed for three days. Three days that I’d set aside to jam...

E. Catherine Tobler has never eaten honey to the point she’s dissolved, but has probably come pretty close.
In her spare time, she edits the short fiction magazine Shimmer and keeps a close eye on the itinerant badgers who set the type.
Today, she’s joining Book Bites to talk about her latest Folloy-Mallory Adventure: The Honey Mummy.
Please welcome E....

An Honor to Be Nominated – Compton Crook & Nebulas
Last week, I sat on some news until I thought I was going to burst. I can keep other people’s secrets just fine. Mine own? Agony.
It didn’t help that I’d used the child lock settings on my tech to wall myself off from all the awards chatter, so I had no idea what was coming… Or maybe that helped a lot.
Here we go:
I am so honored and grateful to be nominated for several awards this spring.
The fact that when people went to nominate they thought of Updraft is in itself an honor. So, too, is a...

A Penny for Your Sins: Cooking the Books with Matt Wallace

The first time I metMatt Wallace, he made me laugh. That’s the kind of guy he is. Granted, we were in the middle of fire season in Spokane, Washington, and laughing was a little painful and too filled with scorched air, but that’s the kind of guy Matt is too.
Even better, Matt’s written the funniestsupernatural catering novellas I’ve ever read, and he came to Cooking the Books to tell us all the behind-the-scen...
