Book Bites: A Blend of Spices by J. Kathleen Cheney

Amazon | Powell’s | Barnes & Noble | Target | WalMart | Indiebound

Book Bites is Cooking the Books‘ more easygoing cousin. Authors talk about their book and share a recipe, all in one tasty bite.

J. Kathleen Cheney‘s Golden City trilogy twined magic, history, and intrigue. Her new book from Penguin Randomhouse, Dreaming Death, brings us psychic talents and fatal magic. Welcome!

In my new book Dreaming Death, my characters come from two different cultures, one of which favors strong spices. In...

Here’s where you can find me.
(Don’t forget, I’ll have swag for you if you’ve done something lately that scared you.)

Magical Tactics

Friday 17:00 – 17:50, Marina 4 (Westin)

Plotting and choreographing fights, whether formal battles or street brawls, is a basic item in the working writer’s toolbox. What happens when there’s magic in the mix? What changes? What doesn’t change? What’s a really bad idea? And...

A Map Year

I’ve been thinking a lot about maps lately:their stated purposes, their politics, and their alternate uses. Maybe it’s because of all the travel, maybe it’s because I’m setting new goals for myself. But the truth is that I’ve always loved maps – old and new.I’ve especially lovedhow a map can define the known and unknown, point out regions Iwants to visit (real and imaginary), and mark places I’ve been.

I made an author’s map...

2015 Eligibility Post for Me and 143 Other People

With regards to letting people know what work I’ve done over the past year, for consideration with regards to various things, I know I am my own best advocate (I know this thanks to the nudging and prodding of good friends. Thanks you guys.), but I would really much rather talk about the work of others. Can’t I do both?

Turns out thisis my blog and I can do that!(Though it got a little out of hand. You want to see it done with grace and class? Go here.) Still here? OK. SO.

Seven Minutes to Cannibalism: Cooking the Books with Lawrence M. Schoen

BarskCover(300dpi) Amazon | B&N| BAM! | iBooks| IndieBound

Having served on a number of delightful food panels with Lawrence M. Schoen, I can tell you first hand: do not tempt him to talk cannibalism. And absolutely don’t mention fruit roll ups.

But do — DO — ask him about his new book out now – BARSK: The Elephant’s Graveyard. This gorgeous tome has been described as “philosophical science fiction” and “Dune, with elephants!” and it is all those things, and more.

In particular (and this is why we ran right int...

A Card or Two for Tom Purdom

Sobeing in the hospital kind of stinks, especially around the new year, especially if you’ve been there a while.

Myfriend, neighbor, and long-time SFF writer and music critic Tom Purdom has been in the hospital / rehab since August 5, when he was hit from behind while walking on a Schuykill River trail. This isn’t really news – it’s been in Locus(though he’s moved rooms since).

Tom’s been writing SF since the 1950s and I shared anin Asimov’s with him this spring.

A fellow friend and neighbor,...
