Fiction on The Rails, Fall Flights of Fantasy Tour Day 1

Dear Diary – The train is strangely quiet now, after the riot… er, sudden stampede due to the appearance of warrior poets, invisible carnivorous flying cephalopods, and a phalanx of rebel accountants. Luckily, I had a new pair of wings (Thanks to Withencroft Industries!) in case I needed to fly…

But no worries! We (Ilana C. Myer, Seth Dickinson, and I) were quickly back on our way to our first stop on the Tor Books Fall Flights of Fantasy Tour – Wellesley Books in Wellesley MA.

They were marv...

Parenting(Creating).FailMode

Being both a professional creative and a parent, for all that it’s great, also sucks sometimes.

You want to be the superhero your kid needs. You also want them to remember you as someone awesome. Not “That bozo with the laptop and the pathetic weeping.”

And there are very cool things about being this kind of parent. You don’t have to wear a suit, or commute all the time, or use PowerPoint… ever.

You know the best memes, sometimes before they do (don’t get used to that). You can wear a cape to...

Calling the Muse: Cooking the Books with Ilana C. Myer

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Indiebound

Amongthefall 2015 Tor debuts, Ilana C. Myer’s epic fantasy Last Song Before Night is theone with warrior poets, wine, song, magic, and competition — all of which appeal to me on a grand scale. (Full Disclosure: I had the pleasure of blurbing Last Song Before Night) All the more because Last Song Before Night is a great book for talking about food and the lack of it. And Ilana is a glorious guest.

Today, in honor of her book launch this week, I’m delighted...

Uptember Wrap-Up 1: words, tacos, more words, & gratitude

The past month has been filled with friends, tacos, and words, and a lot of new.

Before I do anything else, I want to sayhow grateful I am for you — whether you came out to say hi, left a review, or dropped me a private note. Writing’s a lonely job sometimes, and your letting me know how Updraft, or Cooking the Books, or any of my fiction, resonated? That’s such a huge thing. Thank you. If you interviewed me, hosted me on y...

Uptember, Week 4: Baltimore Book Festival & Main Point Books!

I’m flying back from the West Coast today, which means there are some silver-signed hardbacks of Updraft available at Borderlands – San Francisco, Mysterious Galaxy – San Diego, and University Bookstore – Seattle. Such an amazing time at all three. Here’s a quick shot of the University Books crowd. More on that soon.

I have new posts going up at The Arched Doorway (A cartography of maps), Vampire Book Club (looking at things upside-down), and Starships and Dragonwings (about that wingtest…)...

Superstitions and Flying Bighorn Sheep: Cooking the Books – Elizabeth Bear Interviews Fran Wilde

Cooking the Books has for the past four years (I can’t believe we’re coming up on four years and more than 40 authors, editors, and agents. WOW.) been about other authors, not me. That’s the way I wanted it — it’s a forum for me to talk to others about their craft, their books.

Updraft OrderUpdraft (Amazon | B&N| Powell’s | Borderlands | Doylestown Books | Indiebound)

But this month, Updraft, my first novel with Tor, is finally out! … and while I am interviewing author Ilana Myer (Last Song Before Ni...
