Five Economic Reforms Millennials Should Be Fighting For | Politics News | Rolling Stone

The link below is to an article by Jesse A. Myerson, in Rolling Stone. The argument is another go-round of communism vs. capitalism, which has been done, and done some more. I think it’s a mistake to assume capitalism is entirely bad, but it’s not handed down by divinity, either. Communism fits the same pot. Good points and bad points.

Maybe it’s time to try a compromise. For instance, I have a gut feeling that every human being born deserves to have a few feet of ground to call his own. I don...

Raise cigarette taxes $2 a pack to pay for new lung cancer screening guidelines | Dr. Jen Gunter

I’m a big believer in personal responsibility. Part of being responsible is to pay the costs for the things you choose to do. Do you drive a car? Pay to keep it in good condition, pay to cover pollution damage, pay for roads, pay for car insurance. Do you smoke? Pay for the extra health care you will need. Pay for the extra health care for people you endanger (for instance, your children).

I can be a real ass about personal responsibility. I don’t think alcoholics should get liver transplants...

2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

The most prolific commenters were Angela Brown, Ann Bresnan, Maria Zannini, Lani Longshore, and Rhonda Garcia. Thanks, Ladies! You always leave good comments, too!

If you’re curious, take a look at the report.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,200 times in 2013. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Other Writers: Jordan Bernal

The other day, I told you about a new book from one of my critique partners. Now, the author herself is here to talk to you, about her inspiration, her hopes, and her new dragon series. Jordan, you have the floor!

Jordan Bernal: Dragon Writer and Dragonrider

I was born on the wrong planet. No, I’m not talking about the Mars vs. Venus debate, not even a planet in the Milky Way. I’m referring to the third planet in the Sagittarian Sector, a planet known as Pern. That’s right. As sure as I’m breat...

Sometimes You Have to Play

You know those days. All the usual rush and stress: up before the sun, followed by an hour of yelling at the kids to get up already, get dressed, eat breakfast…, the drive to daycare or school, then off to work where that report is drop-dead due, evenings and weekends filled with arguments over eating, homework assistance, little league, piano lessons, grocery shopping, laundry…

Let’s face it. Parenthood is achore. There was a time when you wanted it more than anything else in your life: that s...

Real Life Includes Death

Recently, I wrote a post about dying and how we’ve lost touch with it in our modern lives. Death and burial has been taken over by the funeral industry. The process of dying has been taken over by the medical industry. This post touches on another aspect.

How to let go.

In our area, a young girl has been in the news the last week. She had a routine tonsillectomy and suffered sudden complications. She’s been declared brain-dead, but the family is, quite naturally, struggling with this. They’ve g...

An Obstetrician’s Horrible Week | Every Mother Counts

This made me cry. It’s not easy to read, but I feel it’s important to share. One reason is that I know I tend to come down hard on modern obstetric practices and doctors. Yet, this article shows clearly how doctors really do care about their patients. I never dispute that. Doctors are Very Brave People.

Announcing: Jordan Bernal and The Keepers of Eire

I’ve been remiss in oh-so-many-things these days and here is an attempt to take care of one of the most important. One of my crit partners, Jordan Bernal, has just released her first book. I want you to know about it, yes precious, I certainly do.

Do you like dragons? Ireland? Murder mysteries? Then feast your eyes on this:

keepers

For centuries dragons have protected Ireland, their existence kept secret with the help of earth magic and their human riders. Now that secret is threatened with the bodies...
