Adventures in Living

Luggage has made an appearance around here, waiting to be filled. We’re starting another adventure. This month marks the second anniversary of the Titanic Memorial Cruise in 2012, which marked the hundredth anniversary of the sinking. Long-time friends of this blog know I was on that cruise and that it was a rare and wonderful experience.

We shared that experience with many amazing people, and we’ve kept in touch, thank you, Facebook. The cruise was one part solemnity and two parts fun. So muc...

Public Service Announcement: My Two Cents

How about if the American people invest in ourselves? Use our tax dollars to put all the unemployed to work, with real wages so they can support their families, pay for health insurance, and have paid time off for sickness or vacation. These people can then pay taxes, buy food, clothes, cars, etc., and put the money back into their communities. Our original investment gives us repaired infrastructure, clean cities, safe streets, adequate public transportation, and only the hard cases (elderly...

What America Isn’t, Or Anyway Wasn’t – NYTimes.com

We need to remember that for all (pretty much) of human history, the wealthy have always horded their money and used the poor as serfs to increase their own profit. There is absolutely no proof to be found that money trickles down. The American experiment of taxation, with high taxes on the wealthy used to improve infrastructure and education, resulted in the strongest economy the world has ever seen.

A Cooking Post: Craftsy Knife Skills

I’ve been watching this series on knife skills, and it’s terrific. It’s been a while since I’ve had a brush-up in this area and it’s reminded me how much easier cooking is when you know how to use a knife, AND your knives are good quality and sharp. The course is free, you just have to sign up at Craftsy. It’s more than worth it – the demonstrations are easy to follow and easy to duplicate.

Legal Fictions: Asimov’s Laws of Robotics Are Not Enough | Book View Cafe Blog

Now, this is fascinating. I suspect insurance companies will jump into the fray. In fact, there are already issues about cars, since they are essentially computers now. I think that so far, car manufacturers are responsible if the computer screws up, but what if it’s not obvious the fault was with the car rather than the driver? Anyway, the future is going to be interesting.

The Dragonriders of Pern: Kindle Special

If you love these books, here’s great chance to have the digital version of the first three novels. I have them in print of course – have for decades. But now I can carry them on vacation if I ever feel the need to revisit old friends.

Go here. I don’t know how long the book will be at this price.

The State of the Writer’s Life

Wow, I’ve been so preoccupied, I haven’t even opened this website in the last week. It’s time I wrote something, no?

I say preoccupied because I can’t honestly claim busy. Certainly I’m doing things, but some of those involve computer games. Darn distractions.

I’m sad to report thatShipbuilderdid not win the Reader’s Choice award in Speculative Fiction. I thank all of you who voted for it, and I’m going to be content that it was even nominated. That’s an honor in itself. I get to keep the nifty...

Banned From Baby Showers: Healthy Mom/Healthy Baby – Is That Really All That Matters?

I sometimes use this game in my course, but I do NOT tell the parents they get to keep just two cards. That’s outrageous. The point of the game when I teach it is to show people how one intervention can lead to another to another to another…
