The Price of Convenience

See, this is why I buy into a holistic version of life. This month’s Scientific American has an article about intestinal microbes,Gut Reactionsby Claudia Wallis.

Go ahead and read it if you’re interested. It’s not very long. The gist of the article is that the types and diversity of microbes that populate our guts have a direct effect on how we store fat and gain weight. Theoh-we’re-so-surprised! (sarcasm alert) finding is how we end up with either a healthy mix of microbes, or one that piles...

Fertility Diet and Eating for Two

marlenedotterer:

These are excellent points about healthy eating for pregnant women. All my childbirth students should take note!

Originally posted on modern homesteading, one step at a time.:

I was lucky. I didn’t have a problem getting pregnant. My husband has only had to so much as sneeze at me twice and I’ve gotten pregnant (though unfortunately, my first time resulted in a miscarriage – the DNA just decided to be wonky). But unfortunately, for so many women, trying to conceive is not so eas...

Pesticides and Children: Why Kids and Expectant Mothers Are Urged to Eat Organic – Natural Health – MOTHER EARTH NEWS

I can’t stress enough how important this is. If you’re pregnant or have children, pleaseeat and serve organic food as much as possible. People always shrug and go on believing “conventional” food is perfectly fine, because it’s convenient and cheap. But how many current cases of cancer in adults could have been avoided if they had eaten an organic diet from childhood? I agree with this article, and most of the comments, too – although of course, I haven’t read ALL of the comments, and I know these things often get contrary…

Manage Your Sugar Cravings for Optimum Health! | The Flexi Foodie

This short article has some good tips. Sugar is something I always crave. No matter how much I try to eat well, I almost always have a sweet snack during the day. Sometimes more than one. I do try to use honey for most things, and I’m also trying to eat fruit (without added sugar) instead of a cookie or such. I’m doing better, but it’s a constant struggle.

Weekend Happenings

Himself and I are out of state taking care of a grandchild whose army parents are on temporary duty elsewhere. We are truly enjoying this chance to bond with our beautiful 8-year-old girl.

In the wider world, look at this: it’s one of those mushy public proposals that make the rounds on the internet once in a while.

Except… this one is mydaughter’s.

Way to go, Robbie! And thanks to Thompson Square for sharing the light!
