“Is Breast Really Best?” The Debate Doesn’t End Here… | Evolutionary Parenting | Where History Meets Science In Parenting

This is one of the best rejoinders on the recent spate of “formula is better than breastfeeding” articles based on a study inSocial Science & Medicine.

Here’s a quote from the wrap-up. This is my biggest fear, too:

“My biggest fear with articles like that is that it completely detracts from the push to make breastfeeding easier for those who want to do it (i.e., those fighting for greater support and leave and all the other things necessary for many women to have a healthy, happy breastfeeding...

Jeanne Jackson’s Mendonoma Sightings Throughout the Year Book Launch, at Gualala Arts Center, April, 2014

My lovely friend, Jeanne Jackson, has a wonderful book coming out in April. If you’ve never been to Sonoma/Mendocino, or if you go as often as you can, you’re in for a treat with this book. For years, Jeanne has been writing a weekly column in her local paper, featuring photographs from anyone in the area who want to send her a picture of something they’ve seen in nature. They have a fun phone tree that goes into action when whales are spotted off the coast, so everyone can run for a vantage...

Just Sayin’

Robert De Niro at the Oscars:

“The mind of a writer can be a truly terrifying thing. Isolated, neurotic, caffeine-addled, crippled by procrastination and consumed by feelings of panic, self-loathing and soul-crushing inadequacy. And that’s on a good day.”

Another Step

In our continuous search for good health, Himself and I have made another adjustment to our diet. I have only myself to blame.

My interest in Real Food gives me reason to learn about food policy, agriculture, paganism, and all kinds of things. It also compels me to watch lots of documentaries if it looks like it has anything to do with food. You know – Supersize Me, Food, Inc., things like that.

So it was no surprise to see something called Forks Over Knives in our movie queue. I didn’t bother...

A Cooking Post: aka, Those Dratted Emergency Supplies

We live in earthquake country. Unlike tornado or hurricane country, we can go decades… entire lifetimes, even…, with nary a disaster to trip us up. I’ve lived here since 1990 and have not felt more than a few minor shakes. But if I’d moved out here one year earlier, I would have felt the impact of Loma Prieta and lived through the aftermath of fires and loss of electricity, gas or water.

As bad as Loma Prieta was though, most of the longer-term effects were limited to San Francisco and the pen...
