Travel Camera: I knew I had the right one when…

Screen Shot 2013-06-24 at 8.54.07 AMI’ve been writing this blog for four years.

In each of the first three years I bought a new travel camera. All except the last fell short of my expectations in one way or another.

Third time lucky.

But, it wasn’t just luck. I analyzed what I disliked about my other cameras, did more research and asked more people who were into photography about which camera to buy. I took the plunge. I bou...

Monument Valley and the Question of Historical Truth

Inside Goulding's Museum the movies shot in Monument Valley are celebrated.

Inside Goulding’s Museum the movies shot in Monument Valley are celebrated.

There are as many sides to an argument as there are people involved. Likewise, there are as many sides to history as there are peoples/nations to tell it.

There is truth in every side but the truth that is generally understood is the one that suits the victors.

I studied the philosophy of history at the University of Toronto. The question of whether there can be historical truth is one that was frequently debated on a th...

photo, image, trees, lane

The de Martines Family Farm.

“You went to Stratford…and visited a pig farm?”

Stratford, Ontario is internationally known for one thing: The Stratford Festival. Every year, people travel from all over the world to see incredible productions of Shakespearean plays.

I, on the other hand, went to see pigs.

Much of my travel has been to urban centres. I love the excitement and possibility, the art and culture, the noise and movement of big cities. But I grew up in the countryside, walking through hayfi...

The Meaning of Landscape: road trip through the American Southwest

View from the trail head of one of my hikes.

Sedona with its stunning red buttes was my first destination on my trip.

It was the same on my recent trip through Arizona. The stunning red mountains, buttes, mesas, canyons and cliffs, the gorgeous desert and tumbleweed (tumbleweed!) tumbling was all so novel for me, dramatic, stunning!. The landscape was like nothing I had ever s...

Her Face is a Map of the World.

Evelyn in Antarctica this past January.

I’d like my face to be “a map of the world”.

To me, it would mean that I am a life-long learner.

One who is forever growing.

Living dynamically.

I strive for this in my life and traveling solo helps me feel like I am making progress. But, as I meet certain people, I realize how far I have yet to grow.

“Everything around her is a silver pool of light.”

What a lovely image – a “silver pool of light”.

This line, and the one from the title of this post, is from “Su...
