Zen and the Art of Solo Travel

I'm way past due reading this book. All I've read is 25 pages and I already know that it will influence me and my thoughts about solo travel.

I’m way past due reading this book. All I’ve read is 25 pages and I already know that it will influence me and trigger many thoughts that I will share in Solo Traveler.

And what is good, Phaedrus,

And what is not good __

Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?

A quote at the beginning of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values

Sometimes, we don’t know what we know.

We don’t know our own intelligence, competence and resilience.

We don’t know our ability to navigate new...

Transitions are inevitably times of stress.

As a solo traveler, you may experience the stress of transitions more...

Beautiful Mazinaw Lake.

This year, I’ve gone camping two ways. I camped and traveled through Arizona, southern Utah and parts of Colorado by RV. I also stayed for a week in a tent in Bon Echo Provincial Park, about three hours northeast of Toronto.

Which did I like better?

Well, each has its advantages and each can be preferable depending on the experience you seek. I’ll share their pros and cons. In the reading, I’m sure you’ll infer which I prefer. If not, I’ll make it clear at...

Not the same rickshaw – my trip was at night.

It’s important.

How we treat our world, the environment, other people’s countries and cultures, and how we treat other people as we travel, is very important.

Have I always got it right? No. But I try. And when I fail, I’m sometimes able to correct my error as was the case when I felt it important that I pay a bicycle rickshaw driver three times the negotiated fare.

Travel is very much a two-way street. As you go and explore a new culture, those you m...

Generosity, Safety Nets and a Travel Poem

Simon Constam

On the road in Northern Africa at the age of 19.

This is not something I would recommend.

However, I do believe that the story that unfolds for this 19 year old in this, the second poem I’ve published by Simon Constam (you can read Dislocation here) is one that most of us could tell. The backdrop and characters would be different, of course, but the generosity of strangers helping a solo traveler is a common experience.

You’ll find that tip #9 in 15 Analog Safety Tips, 12 Digital Sa...
