Canoples Investigations Exposes Space Dodger

Good morning and welcome to Sunday Blog Share. This month, we’re focusing on science fiction books. There will be a lot of visitors making an appearance but on Sundays and Tuesdays, this blog will be all about my teen science fiction series—Canoples Investigations!
This series began as an idea in 2001, in the horror filled days after the attacks on September 11. My youngest child was in kindergarten at the time. He came home from school that day, asking why did bad people want to hurt us. I couldn’t answer him for several days, because I didn’t know what to say, but after thinking over the events of that day, an idea formed. Four teens facing trouble in space… BD, Cassie, Carl, and Terry were born. As far as responding to my child about his question, all I told him was that sometimes bad people hurt the rest of the world, but there are always good people to stop them.

There’s a carnival on the station, with all kinds of “legally” cloned animals, more than a few zero-G acrobats, and miniature clowns. BD’s ever present suspicious mind latches onto one thing when the advance team for Galactic Carnival arrives to begin preparations for a weeklong visit. The ringmaster looks familiar, but the man swears that he has never been to Canoples Station before. Even worse, children five and under are disappearing. A bit of investigating on BD’s part clues him in to the fact this has happened on every station Space Dodger Space Circus has visited so far. He’s determined to uncover the true identity of the ringmaster and solve the mystery of the missing children, but at what cost. Is BD willing to lose his lifelong friends to solve this case? Will they prove Jenna Rock, Wade’s girlfriend, isn’t involved?

Excerpt
The normal sounds of the promenade seem wrong. I have a sensation of impending doom, much like the moments before the space pirates showed up. The desire to leap into action is very strong, so much so that I’m literally leaning forward with my fists clenched at my side.
“Easy,” Carl murmurs. “You don’t know for sure it’s him.”
Of course, I know this man we’re watching is our quarry. How can I not know that? Not that his appearance is anywhere close to his daughter, who right now is aboard Fomalhaut for a very long stay. Erin Markus did lead Spacers Rule, a galaxy wide ring of splifters, but she wasn’t in charge.
Oh, no, she was far from in charge of those thieves. The person with that responsibility has just entered Canoples Station and is talking with none other than our less than ethical governor, but I have no definitive way of proving that.
“Back off, BD,” Terry says in a low voice. “You can’t be sure, not with that man wearing what he is.”
He’s wrong. Terry is as wrong as wrong can be. Of course, I can tell that the clown talking to Governor Tulane is Dr. Janos Markus. That white makeup on his face, the frizzy deep red hair, and meteors racing across his nose in an attempt to disguise his identity don’t fool me.

The Travelers

Good morning and welcome to wwwblogs. All through September, we’re taking a peek at some stupendous science fiction authors. I have the fabulous luck to know each of these dedicated, hardworking individuals.
Jim Cronin appears today with his tale, The Travelers.

The Travelers
Time travel is not for the timid.
Time travel is not for the faint of heart. Join our two intrepid travelers as they embark on a journey into the past, to the days of the dinosaurs. Marvel at the sights, sounds and incredible creatures of the Cretaceous Period, and learn a bit of actual science along the way. But be wary. You never know how your actions might affect the future for us all.
In this, my second short story of a series, I hope to create a set of tales which are not only entertaining, but are a window into learning some real science. My goal is to help alleviate the drudgery of so many textbooks through the art of story-telling and have fun, while learning at the same time.

About Jim Cronin
I am a retired middle school science teacher, working part-time as an educator-performer at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. I wrote The Brin Archives as a challenge to learn something new. I have been married for forty years to the love of my life. We raised two incredible sons, and now have three amazing grandchildren to spoil rotten.
I was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in Arlington, Virginia before moving to Denver where I attended High School and eventually college at Colorado State University, graduating with a degree in Zoology and a teacher certification. My wife and I currently live near Denver in the small town of Parker.
My science fiction series, The Brin Archives is an epic adventure encompassing an entire galaxy on the verge of destruction. This trilogy, to my amazement and delight, has won critical acclaim and numerous awards. Who would have ever guessed this old, retired science teacher would become a successfully published author? I hope you enjoy my stories.

The adventure begins on an impossibly ordinary day. BD Bradford, intrepid head of Canoples Investigations, has nothing more than fun on his mind. Too bad for him and his crew, Canoples Station has a way of never staying calm for long. Soon, however he and his compatriots—Carl and Cassie Wills, Terry Ashley and occasionally Mick Anglin and Jack Simpson deal with all sorts adventures.
Whether it be tracking down space pirates, tangling with demented cloned animals, setting the record straight about their intentions, unmasking a man stealing children to perform in a circus, or discovering new friends, Canoples Investigations always dives into action without thinking about the consequences.
Life in the galaxy is anything but boring. And all BD wants to do is sit down and wolf down a Gut Buster pizza with his pals.

Excerpt
The bell pings eight times in succession. I am away from my learning center and out the door in an instant. Today, my dad promised to take me with him on a very important mission. We’re going to hunt for space pirates. Now that I’m eleven, he says I’m ready for some real adventures.
“Yo, BD!” Carl Wills, one of my best buds, yells. “Wait up. Where are you going?”
I stop and bounce from foot to foot. Dad made me promise that I wouldn’t breathe a word to anyone about our mission today. Still, I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean Carl, his twin, Cassie, and Terry Ashley. The four of us have always done stuff together. We’re the well known No Sock Brigade, always sticking our noses into situations no one wants us to know about, and we never wear socks. It’s kind of a trademark thing. We’re going to be galaxy-famous private space investigators when we’re older and anyone who is famous needs a trademark. Right?
“I’m not supposed to tell.” I glance at the other students heading toward the lifts.
Every day, it’s always the same routine for every student under the age of seventeen. We get to classes at seven bells—that’s seven o’clock in the morning for those of you who don’t talk space station—and are out by fourteen bells, or two in the afternoon. Everyone heads on up to the promenade to have a bunch of fun before we go home around seventeen bells, or five in the afternoon.
I kind of wish I could go up to the promenade with my buds. It’ll be boring waiting on Dad to finish reports so he’s ready to go hunting space pirates.

Of Knight and Devil

Good morning and welcome to Monday Blogs. All through September, we’re taking a peek at some stupendous science fiction authors. I have the fabulous luck to know each of these dedicated, hardworking individuals.
Frederick H. Crook appears today with his tale, Of Knight and Devil.

It is July 2130, less than a year after the destruction of the Cape Canaveral Spaceport, the last of its kind in America. Major Reginald Mattersly of the British Army’s SRR has been slowly making his way to the west coast, where he wishes to find a home on the beach and live out his life. These plans are cut short when he is ambushed in Nevada by a trio of armed men. To his rescue comes a man who calls himself Elias Mulhaney. The two of them continue on to a town called Lovelock, currently embattled with their neighbors in Reno.
The mayor of Lovelock, Jazz Hernandez, is the prime target of her former lover, Gillespie, the mayor of Reno. Mattersly and Mulhaney band together to infiltrate Reno to rescue her kidnapped niece, Nora, and destroy the factory that provides Gillespie’s military power. In a post-Great Exodus Earth where there is no law and no government, can there still be justice?

There's a new crew in town, Spacers Rule, and they are putting Canoples Investigations through the hoops. In the two weeks since BD and his group of intrepid investigators took on the space pirates and aided in incarcerating them on the prison barge, Fomalhaut, the station has turned against them. Now, they have to prove they have exactly what it takes to compete as security consultants on the new industrial stations under construction, stop spacers rule from stealing anything not bolted down. Then there's the little matter of contaminated codos and re-kats, and Missy. Oh, yes, Missy is still around, and she's four now, and determined to be a junior BD.

Excerpt
A whole week has passed since the volcano on Io erupted. My crew and I are chillin’ on the promenade. Absolutely nothing will disturb us today. Nope. Not a thing that has a chance of interrupting the planned exploration of the latest set of test scores for the pilot’s license that will be posted within the hour.
“What do you think?” Terry asks. “Did we pass?”
Cassie snorts. Even though we’re now officially a couple, I give her a sideways crooked look. So what if she passed that test the first time without breaking a sweat? We guys have to keep up our reputation of not being able to land with those silly rules in place.
We could have passed the second time, or the third. We didn’t have to take the test five times. Really, we could have done a lot better before now.
“Well.” She leans her elbows on the table. “I can always shuttle all of you around.” Cassie giggles. “Until you manage to get it through your thick skulls that you have to use the landing beacon and follow all of the rules.”
“Like you do,” Carl says. “Who bumped the back skids taking off from Jupiter? Huh?”
“That was an emergency.” She leans back in the chair and folds her arms across her chest. “Do you want me to repeat what you said? Let’s see…” Cassie taps a finger against her chin. “If I remember right, it was something like ‘Stop, stop, stop!’ Oh, and you screamed like a girl.”
