Eerie Waters

Good morning and welcome to Tuesday Blog Share. This month, we’re focusing on paranormal books. There will be a lot of visitors making an appearance but on Sundays and Tuesdays, this blog will be all about things that go bump in the night!
Ghosts, ghouls, demons, you name it and I find it fascinating. Anything that can’t be proven becomes a story in my head, a way to explain those mysterious bumps in the night or things moving when no one is near them. Oh, I’ve heard all the explanations about how it could be cars driving past or a minor earthquake—good luck proving the second one to me. I can feel earthquakes, having grown up in an area where they abound.

March 27, 1964, a 9.2 earthquake devastated Alaska and brought a tsunami that did further damage. Odin accepted his responsibility for this disaster and made a promise to Thor that he would never do such a thing again.
Fifty-three years later, Thor learns his father has returned to Homer, Alaska and is yet again in a destructive mood. What makes matters worse are two teens, Jessie and Jason Sørenson, are related to the Hnickar that continually entices Odin into being destructive.
Can Thor, Jessie, and Jason stop Odin and his Hnickar friend? Will another disastrous earthquake and tsunami finish the destruction begun more than half a century later?

Excerpt
He stood upon the sandy beach, the last rumblings of a devastating earthquake moving far off into the interior. Odin, King of the Norse Gods, shook his head in shame. He was responsible for this travesty and had no way to make reparations.
“Sir.” A man approached him cautiously, followed by a boy of about eighteen years of age. “Are you all right? I saw you tossed from the sea. Were you on a boat that was capsized by the earthquake?”
Both humans wore shocked expressions. The earthquake had been massive, registering at 9.2 on the Richter scale. Many homes had been damaged but Odin didn’t sense any wailing for the dead. Although, from what else he was sensing, that would soon happen and he couldn’t do anything about it—because he was partially the source of this disaster.
“I be fine.” He turned toward the sea, where the Hnickar he’d frolicked with were still lying in wait for their next victim. “Why do I do this?” he whispered. “What kind of God am I that I revel in destruction so often?”
There was a comely sea witch below the waves he often thought of when he was in Asgard. Whenever Freya became too irritating to be borne, Odin fell into a dark mood that required destruction to soothe him, and he would visit his lovely Astrid. She would encourage him to channel his anger into frightening those puny humans inhabiting the land masses around the seas. Every time, Odin thought it was a wonderful idea, until he saw the damage he’d caused.

A curse uttered in 1422 sets two families against each other – each side determined to destroy the other. Now, Zan Courtland, unprepared for the task, must face off against her foe – who also happens to be her boyfriend.

Excerpt
Cheer camp had ended an hour ago, but Suzanne Courtland, called Zan by anyone who didn’t want her in their face, was still hanging around. She bounced up from the warm metal bleacher and went in search of her boyfriend. Luke “L-Mac” MacGregor was the quarterback for the Landry Wildcats, an uber-cool guy she’d dated for the last six wondrous, exciting, happy months.
They were the “in” couple, the one all their classmates envied and what all the others wanted to be. When school began in two weeks, Zan knew everything would be absolutely perfect … if L-Mac would just hurry up.
“What’s taking him so long?” she wondered aloud.
She had so much to do tonight, and he’d promised to come with her. They were going to the mall, to search out the last of what they needed for school.
“Two more minutes, and then I’m gone.” Right this very second, Zan would have cheerfully walked away from L-Mac and never looked back.
“How long does it take to shower anyway?” Zan grumbled. “Girls are supposed to take forever, not guys. I bet they’re–”
A boy’s ear-splitting wail of pain and horror sent a chill through her body. She leaped off the bleachers, jumped the fence, and ran toward the woods. Unlike most of the teens she knew, Zan never hesitated to race toward problems. And unlike most of the teens she knew, she should be equipped to handle anything she found where that guy had screamed.

Eric Bator was a loser. Lanky, awkward, and painfully shy, especially around girls, he was easily out-shined by his little brother Ray (already a rock star on his middle school football team) at home and his best friend Michael de Vries, leading quarterback and top scholar at St. Therese High School. Whenever Michael came to dinner, which was often, Eric shrank and disappeared into the walls like a ghost.
But all that was about to change.
From the moment Slate Jake, tall, blonde and cool, so cool, burst into his life with a wide grin splitting his face and a switchblade in his hands, and an introduction to the universe of magic, nothing would ever be the same.
Was this just some crazy whacked world of mysterious games Eric had entered, or had he freely stepped off the razor’s edge into a malevolent universe of pure evil that kept pulling him in deeper and deeper and from which there was no escape?

About Leigh Podgorski
I am an award-winning playwright and screen writer who began writing novels in 2010. My plays have been produced in New York City and Los Angeles as well as regionally. In 2006, with the help of a grant from the California Council for the Humanities, as well as numerous Southern California Indian Tribes, I was able to adapt my play We Are Still Here: the Story of Katherine Siva Saubel and the Cahuilla Indians of Southern Califormia to a documentary that I produced, directed, and wrote.
My work reflects my scholarship and fascination with the diverse cultures of the Earth and the mysticism and history that colors and influences the universe both within and without us.In 1985, I had the distinct privilege of interviewing Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross for my one-act play Windstorm. Here was a celebrated doctor who had penetrated the fourth wall, who saw visions, who communicated with the dead, and who, through her visions, taught us more about, as she said, not how to die, but how to live. While producing the play festival CelebrateWomen, I interviewed another great woman, Cahuilla elder Katherine Siva Saubel. Dr. Saubel, like Dr Ross, was a great healer, and a great visionary. She could call the wind by whistling for it to blow down from the mountains to cool the steaming valley below.
“The film also portrays the Creation mythology of the Cahuilla, performed by a Native American cast, which is well done and sustains viewer interest. There are a lot of important ideas and traditions illuminated here. [The]film [s] will be appreciated by history buffs, students of Native American history, and general viewers.--Margaret B. Miller, Univ. of South Dakota Lib., Vermillion”--Library Journal Review.
I also worked for fourteen years as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Basic and Developmental Skills at Glendale Community College helping both adult and high school students earn either their GED or HS Diploma. Just as Elisabeth Kubler Ross said it was her patients who were her greatest teacher, so were my students my greatest teachers. Many, if not most of my GED students were immigrants, the vast majority working all day and coming to school at night. These students, through their deep and profound love of America, taught me all over again what it means to be an American.

Where?
At the pond.

Lorelei loses what’s left of her family close to graduation, but she still has Mama to lean on, or rather she has Mama’s ghost. At first, Lorelei ignores the opinion about her boyfriend, Chase, but then she figures out he is acting strangely and has a new tattoo covering a scar he never had before.
Chase, however, isn’t one to give up on a girl. He dumps them not the other way around, until Mama’s ghost gives Lorelei the strength shut him out of her life.

Excerpt
“Never let a boy take advantage of you, baby girl. That’s one of the most important things I wanted to tell you afore this disease took me, but I never had a chance.”
A tall, slender seventeen-year-old girl stands under the shady branches of a majestic oak tree. Lorelei Perrijames crouches down in front of a tombstone. With a finger, she traces the name on the cold, unyielding granite: Bethany Elizabeth Perrijames.
“I still miss you so much, Mama, even though you’ve been gone a year.” Lorelei sniffles. “I miss your hugs. Your silly jokes, like the day you told me my dress was caught in my underwear.” Even if I totally freaked, but that was part of the fun. “Mostly, I miss all the things you taught me.”
Sadness tinges her voice, and her finger continues to press against the stone. Her gaze moves upward, to where a misty woman smiles sadly at her.

Everyone pays for the mistakes of their family, but for Ciara Tressa Lafferty, that particular mistake happened almost sixty years ago, and nobody will forget it. She’s constantly compared to her great aunt, and even worse, she looks like the woman.
A senior in high school with a great future ahead of her, Ciara has no clue what this Halloween holds for her. That it’s the anniversary her great aunt’s disappearance is just one more annoyance as she discovers her boyfriend’s great grandfather refuses to let her move on with her own life. Then Ciara finds herself thrust in a nebulous existence within her own body when Tressa Anne Lafferty, her great aunt, possesses her. Ciara tries to break free, but Tressa refuses to release her untilCiara discovers the secret hidden within the charred remains of McLaren House--a revelation which will rock the whole town.

Excerpt
The sense of time gathers speed. For so long, she dwelled in limbo, awaiting the moment when she would reunite with him. He brings conflicting emotions. Tressa loved him, yet he killed her. Logic dictates that she must hate him.
Her death came about not because he loved her, but because he had to hide his acts, what he had done to ruin his family name.
Duke Turkin was incapable of caring about anyone but himself. The only things he really loved were power and money.
“It’s time, Duke,” Tressa whispered into the humid, velvety night air. “Can you feel it? I’ll make sure that you don’t escape me this time. We’re destined to spend eternity together.”
1955, the year that she died, has long since vanished into the mists of time, along with the innocence of that time, but that innocence was a façade. They hid from the ugliness of the world, but what was done in the days leading up to All Hallows Eve was about to re-emerge. Tressa had awakened, and she was bent on revenge, no matter the cost, no matter who she used. Her spirit examined what she could sense.
Duke’s power in Landry, Georgia had slipped. Most of the town viewed him as an archaic has-been, part of a past the South was trying to forget. The two she had predicted would bring him down were ready to do their duty.
I can’t leave things to chance. I must manipulate this, in order to best my true love forever.
“The curse,” she said as her spirit gathered strength. “It’s coming true.”
