The Truth Shall Set You Free ~ VERUM by Courtney Cole @Court_Writes #contest

Verum RDL Banner

VERUM
by Courtney Cole

Verum by Courtney ColeThe truth shall set you free.

My name is Calla Price and I’m drowning.

My new world is a dark, dark ocean and I’m being pulled under by secrets.

Can I trust anyone? I don’t know anymore.

The lies are spirals. They twist and turn, binding me with their thorns and serpentine tongues. And just when I think I have it figured out, everything is pulled out from under me.

I’m entangled in the darkness.

But the truth will set me free.

It’s just ahead of me, so close I can touch it. But even though it shines and glimmers, it has glistening fangs and I know it will shred me.

Are you scared?

I am.

Enjoy An ExcerptTogether, we float to the surface, still intertwined. We break through the top and I suck in a breath and Dare is staring into my eyes.

There’s tension here, but not the bad kind. It’s the kind that ignites you, the kind that intoxicates you, the kind that once you taste it, you’ll crave for the rest of your life.

I’ve forgotten that I was going to be careful, that I was going to reject him on every level.

All I can remember, all I can focus on, is how veryalive Dare DuBray is making me feel in this moment, how alive he always makes me feel.

For a girl who has been surrounded by death her entire life, this is a very big deal.

“I’m a little afraid of you,” I blurt honestly, and Dare still has his arms around me. Our treading water motions keep our legs rubbing together, the friction still there.

Hot,

Hot,

Hotter.

Dare smiles, but there is no humor in it.

“Good.”

“Why?”

My honesty makes me seem innocent, but I don’t know how to play games. I have no experience with the opposite sex at all.

“Because that makes you feel something.”

But he’s hesitant now and he looks away. There’s something he wants to say, it’s balanced on the tip of his tongue, but he swallows it.

“What is it?” I ask softly. “Just tell me.”

He wants to, I can tell. His secrets are killing him. He just wants to be normal, he’s just acting out a role.

I don’t know why I feel like I know this. It’s just there, suddenly resting on my heart.

“You don’t have to be someone you’re not,” I murmur quietly. His dark eyes snap up to mine and he pulls his hands away. There’s something in his eyes now, something guarded, and our easy afternoon has come to an end.

“What makes you think I am?” he snaps. “Pretending to be something I’m not, I mean.”

I’ve somehow annoyed him, and I don’t answer because I don’t know what to say.

“I’m not being someone I’m not, Calla,” he says coolly as he strides from the water. “I’m being who you need me to be.”

I’m utterly confused, and I’m dripping wet.

“We don’t have towels,” is all he says when I follow him. My clothing soaks up the water and it is a very cold ride back home.

Dare doesn’t say another word and I leave him in the garage.

I don’t see him at dinner, and I don’t see him the rest of the night.

But as I lay in bed around midnight, I see his car leave the garage.

I don’t see him come home, and I’m awake for half the night waiting.

I have no idea where he goes when he slips away.

Somehow, I think he wants it that way.

There’s a fork in the road and even though I see it, I can’t avoid it.

One road goes left, one goes right, and neither of them end well.

I feel it in my bones,

In my bones,

In my bones.

I sing a song of nonsense, and it sings back. The notes echo and twist in the air, and I swallow them whole.

“Come out,” I call behind me, because I know they’re there.

I can’t see them, but they’re always watching.

Eyes appear, blood red, and they blink once, twice, three times.

“I can see you,” I announce and there’s a growl and then I’m crushed beneath the dark, beneath the weight, beneath the oppression.

“You don’t scare me,” I lie.

There’s savagery here, there’s grace.

But above all, there’s oblivion and no matter what I do, I will be sucked into it.

I know it.

I feel it.

I’m crazy.

And it doesn’t matter.

I’m the rabbitrabbitrabbit and I’ll never be free.

Her Sexy Thoughts in NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO #MySexySaturday #dystopian #LGBT

My Sexy Saturday

Hello everyone! It’s the 77th week of My Sexy Saturday. Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.

Today’s theme is…

Their Sexy Thoughts

When characters think about each other in a sexy, exciting way, readers adore them, love hearing about how the hero thinks the heroine is sexy and loving and oh so much more as the story progresses. As writers, we love putting those words down and getting them just right.

Here’s seven from Never Gonna Let You Go, the first story in The Underground series, which celebrates THREE years published today.

Never Gonna Let You Go - Sci-Fi Dystopian with FF and MF scenes

Here’s an excerpt from the very beginning of the story:

Pulling the camera from her backpack, Calla considered what might have happened if she’d remained in Holloway’s tent. Would they have kissed? Her stomach fluttered and dampness spread between her legs as she thought about Melina’s soft lips.

Wait! She wasn’t attracted to women, never had been before. Then why couldn’t she stop thinking about what Holloway’s lips would feel like on hers and all over her body?

She took a deep breath. Sexual relations of any kind are forbidden during the missions. While repeating those words over and over, she spotted a perfect place to set up for her study—a large crancait bush on the edge of the field where the rapat fed. The bright red berries decorated the bush in stark contrast to its deepgreen, oval-shaped foliage. She crept through the waist-high vegetation, trying to make as little noise as possible. Although the foreign planet had not been shaped by an ice age like Earth, it did boast fields all the way to the horizon similar to the prairies where she and Erik had grown up. Erik should be the one she thought about kissing, not Melina, not a woman. She knew everything about him, or once had. But Erik had turned into an asshole, and Melina wanted to be friends. Maybe more? Her body warmed at the thought.

On her way to the red-berried bush where she planned to take pictures of the creatures, she stopped to ensure she hadn’t spooked the herd while her mind wandered to places it shouldn’t. Good, they haven’t moved.

Arriving at the crancait, she spread out a blanket to lay her equipment on and turned to affix her camera to a tripod. She’d never gotten this close to the herd for her footage. She’d managed to remain downwind and the warm breeze not only helped to disguise her scent but also her movements.

With no natural predator—at least none she’d discovered—the rapat flourished on this part of the planet. Their round pig-sized bodies resembled the tapir of Earth, but with the addition of a longer, elephant-like trunk. Their lips smacked and teeth ground together as they ate their fill of grasses. The smell of their dung reminded her of molasses rather than that of any Earth animal.

After adjusting the camera to record video footage of their feeding and social behaviors, she sat down to write her notes. Instead, she could only think of Melina, and the moment in her tent, which could have led to something else, something more than friendship. Something she needed just as much.

~ About Never Gonna Let You Go ~

Caught in a tangle of lies, Calla Jacobs must sort through the truth to discover where she truly belongs. A biologist for Planet Core, she finds herself ensnared in a web of deceit. Sent to Airondelle, she must work with a team to prepare the newly discovered planet for colonists from Earth. But the mission does not go as she expected. Her former lover, Erik Edwards, shuns her, sending Calla into the arms of Melina Holloway, their commander, for the attention she craves and more. A confrontation among the trio leaves her with a broken heart, and fleeing from the two people she trusted most.

Attempting to break free from the lies that bind her, she discovers Planet Core has deceived everyone. And when she returns to Earth, Calla learns just how far Planet Core’s control reaches.

Born into a rival clan of feline shifters, skinwalker Summer McCoy, in her guise as a raven, watches Brick from afar, giving him back a reason to live through her sweet songs and special gifts.

She did not move, except to lower her raised arm from its frozen position. “Why do you call me that…? Annabel Lee?”

“I don’t have another name.”

“Summer,” she said. “I’m Summer.”

Yeah. Def. When the berries plumped sweetest. “Suits you.” His raging arousal made the words hoarse and jagged. Too harsh for this gentle female. “Turn,” he murmured. “I want to see your face.” A low growl escaped him before he could bite it back. “Your breasts.”

She turned then, slowly through the water, rounding to face him.

He sucked in his breath, his heart slamming against his chest. She was stunning and glorious. The beads of water rolling down her golden body sparkled in the sun. She glistened. All natural. No makeup. No artifice. Everything a female should be. And more. Much more.

Another pheromone cloud engulfed him. Her eyes went large and rounded, as if she guessed she’d zapped him with her hormonal lures, but couldn’t help emitting her sex juice any more than he could. Her nose twitched and she sighed, as if enveloped in a vat of melted chocolate, or whatever the fuck his own mating scent smelled like. He could only hope he gave off an aroma as rich and delicious as she did.

He struggled to control the raw savagery of his attraction and had to tear his eyes from her face. But her breasts…God, her breasts. Full and high, the exact size to fill his large hands, rose tips jutting toward him. He remembered how she’d touched herself, how much he’d wanted to replace her hands with his. Hell. He wanted to bury his face between those breasts, lapping at her, licking and sucking, take each one into his mouth, between his lips, grazing the pointed nipples with his teeth until he tore moans of delight from her.

His throat closed, his tongue swelling, filling his suddenly dry mouth, cutting off his ability to utter either animal sounds or inane words. After a beat or two of silence, she glanced away.

“What do you think?” Not shy exactly. Expectant. An undercurrent of doubt laced her question, as if she could not bear to disappoint him, and did not know what to make of his continued speechlessness.

“Perfect.” He rubbed his eyes. “Ah, Christ. You’re perfect.”

“No, I’m not.”

“You are to me.”

A rancher, a CEO, and a horse therapist… FOR RUBY’S LOVE by @Starla_Kaye & a #contest!

For Ruby’s Love by Starla KayeA rancher, a CEO, and a horse therapist…anything in common?

FOR RUBY’S LOVE
by Starla Kaye

Calhoun’s a simple cowboy with more problems in his life than he can handle at the moment. After nearly two years, he struggles to hang onto a relationship with Daniel, his first male lover. Daniel is worried about him because of the fire, his concern for his prized breeding mare, and because he is determined to buy the neighboring ranch to expand. But Daniel isn’t a businessman without goals of his own for expansion, a fact that frustrates Calhoun as well. He doesn’t want to lose Daniel, but will their differences finally be too much?

Daniel considers himself a lucky man to have met the rancher, someone almost his opposite and someone who he doesn’t want to live without. Standing beside the moody Calhoun has been difficult since the fire that burned down a horse barn, took the lives of two valuable horses, and traumatized a favored mare. Along with all of that, his harried friend is determined to expand his ranch holdings. Daniel is against the purchase and would prefer to find a way to slow the man down. Lately, he’s also begun worrying if maybe he isn’t enough to satisfy his lover’s needs.

Complicating everything even more, Ruby shows up later than expected at Calhoun’s ranch to honor a job as a horse therapist that her father had agreed to before his sudden death. She knows what happened to the mare and is certain she can help her, if given the chance. But the stubborn rancher can’t get past the idea of her being a woman, someone not strong enough to work with such a damaged horse. They butt heads over the matter until she finds an ally in Daniel. He is concerned and yet believes in her abilities. Another problem arises, though. She and Calhoun have been skirting around an unwanted attraction, and then she discovers another surprising interest between her and Daniel.

“By the way, I’m Daniel Patterson. His…friend.”

She wondered at his hesitation and the way he glanced up at Cordell. The cowboy tensed a second and nodded as if they’d made some kind of silent agreement. Whatever was going on between them didn’t matter two cents to her. She kept out of other people’s personal business, but she sensed they were more than friends.

Having Mr. Rough Tough Cowboy standing there, tapping his boot, annoyed her. The walk here had done her in; sitting down made her realize that even more. But he wouldn’t be satisfied to give her any kind of peace. He wanted to go nose-to-nose about her lateness and the situation with her father.

“Would you sit down,” she grumbled, looking right at him. “If you just stop glowering at me, I’ll talk.”

To her surprise, a faint hint of red spread beneath his sexy-as-heck day-or-so’s worth of beard stubble. He tossed her coat on the nearby recliner and sat in the other chair.

“I apologize for acting like a….” He seemed at a loss for a description of his rather rude behavior.

Helpful, she supplied one. “An ass.”

He blinked. The action smoothed the crow’s feet at the corners of his brown eyes. She noted a hint of amusement before it disappeared.

Daniel guffawed, capturing her attention.

She thought about how much she liked this man, even with only limited impressions so far. Generally, she wasn’t drawn to a man like him, GQ perfect, cultured, and mannered. He could teach the cowboy a lot, if given the chance. As a down-to-earth woman, earthy men were her weakness. Yet, something about him appealed to her.

Not wanting to think along those lines, she glanced back at the rancher with his tousled, dark hair and her foolish heart skipped a beat. Oh great! He’d been pretty surly so far, but that was largely her fault. Besides, she’d always been attracted to a cowboy in faded, worn jeans that hugged long, muscled legs and showed off his taut ass, like his boot-cut jeans.

She didn’t want to be thinking about him either. She was exhausted, that was all. Well, and she’d become too focused on the fact she was still a v-i-r-g-i-n, in big capital letters. Until losing her father, they’d stayed so busy she’d never taken time for more than some innocent kissing and minor petting. Her father had done his best to keep the flirtatious cowboys they ran into away from her. But her life had changed, her hormones were going crazy. She lusted, yearned, and was half-blinded with curiosity about the whole male/female relationship thing. Dangerous business.

Heaving a disgusted sigh, she shoved the irrational notions away to deal with at a better time. You’re here on business. You’d best remember that, Ruby Tuesday McMurtry.

“Are you all right?” Daniel asked when she’d been quiet too long.

Her face heated. “Yes, sorry, zoned out there for a second.”

She looked straight at Cordell and decided to cut him some slack. “Think we could start over? I won’t act testy and you won’t act all gruff.” She pulled out the warmest smile she could muster. “I apologize for showing up late today. My truck ran out of gas down on your ranch road. So I hotfooted it here.”

“You could have called me.” He studied her with a creased brow and narrowed eyes. “I would have gone to get you.”

Avoiding his annoyed gaze, she glanced at the bag she’d set down next to her chair. “If I’d remembered to charge my cell phone last night, I would have.” She looked up and added, “And, no, I don’t have a car charger. Lost it somewhere, and I haven’t gotten around to getting another one.”

No time for Desire… or Love in COLD HARD JUSTICE by @Karly_Germain #shifter #MMromance

Cold Hard Justice by Carly GermainCold Hard Justice
by Karly Germain

Evernight Publishing Jan 21, 2015

Book #4 Umbra Shifters (conclusion)

Word Count: Approx 15,700

MM Erotic Romance/Paranormal/Shifters/Suspense

Blurb: Undercover work sucked. As a shadow hunter for the Umbra, Justice Cameron was used to sliding into one dangerous situation after another. Infiltrating the motorcycle club, Pride of Kings, to wrap up two outstanding cases should have been quick and painless, turns out it was anything but. Justice didn’t count on Ethan Stone’s son, Xavier, to complicate his assignment.

Xavier Lennox doesn’t care for the ‘lion pride’ way of life, so the scarred, shy loner keeps to himself, living a quiet life in a small cabin at the edge of the MC compound. He ‘fixes broken things’, and no one is more broken than Justice. When Xavier finds Justice beaten on his doorstep, he never imagined he would feel such a potent connection. The big, gruff alpha fascinates Xavier, and it turns out, the attraction is mutual.

The shadow hunter is there for one reason only. No time for complications. No time for desire…or love. Or so he tells himself, because he’s there to mete out…cold, hard justice.

EXCERPT: (PG-13)

Justice had slept last night with a cold compress on his right eye and it must have helped, as he opened both and stared at him. His eyes were a dark brown, darker than his own, but lying this close he could see flecks of gold in the irises. Beautiful.

“You slept all afternoon, and I found Levon asleep on your chest. It seems you’ve made a fast friend.”

Justice stroked Xavier’s cheek with the back of his fingers. “Not just the cat, I hope.”

He leaned in to the touch. “No. Not just the cat.”

Justice explored the raised scars on his left cheek. “How did this happen? Looks like…”

“A stove burner?”

“Yeah.” Justice frowned. “Who hurt you?”

Something warm and tender bloomed inside Xavier. Justice cared. Hope also bloomed. Justice spoke the truth at breakfast. The mate connection could be accepted or rejected. Oh, God. How he wanted them to both accept it. Such a soul bond should not be ignored. It should be nurtured and cherished.

“My stepbrother, Rex. We were eight. You know kids. I invaded his space, touched his things. Actually, I think he was sorry afterward, in his way. He hasn’t hurt me since. He has…anger issues. Amongst other things.” Xavier laced his fingers through Justice’s. Such big hands. So warm. So gentle. Instinctively, he knew Justice would never harm him physically. His heart was another matter.

“Your brother sounds like an asshole.” Justice growled.

“He is. Here’s the surprising thing. I love him in spite of it. Though we’re not close and have very little in common, we are blood. Tainted blood, it seems.”

Justice’s eyebrows rose. “What do you mean?”

Xavier laughed brokenly. “Not sure I want to say. There is something between you and me and if I tell you, it may kill it. I know this is all too fast, but it’s the shifter way. I want you in my life, Justice. I want us to maybe…at some point…become mates.”

****

That Justice did not expect. At least, not yet. Sure, there was something between them, but…mates? Admiration took root deep inside Justice. Kudos to Xavier for just putting it out there. No bullshit with this guy. It was refreshing, but how to answer? Maybe he should take a page from Xavier’s book and be honest. After witnessing the mate connections between the Stones and the McNamees, seeing the love, respect, and the mutual desire which pulsated all around them, he began to long for such a commitment in his life. Suddenly, his undercover position became as complicated as shit.

“I’m not used to factoring in another person in my decisions. Nor am I used to baring my soul. Mates? Jesus, big step. I’m not dismissing it. But I think we should get to know each other better first.” Justice winced inwardly. How friggin’ lame.

“I agree.” Xavier leaned in and kissed him. The electric charge that shot through Justice at the gentle pressure of Xavier’s warm lips stunned him. Justice moaned and deepened the kiss, and his cock grew hard. God, he ached for this guy.

“Lay back. Let me touch you. Let me show you how much I care. I will be gentle, I promise. Let me…love you.” Xavier whispered.

Justice slammed his eyes shut so Xavier could not see the yearning in them. No one, in all his fifty-two rough-and-tumble years of living had ever said those words to him. He let the potent, emotional words seep into the very marrow of his bones.

Now she’s back with no memory of where she’s been. Even more shattering—Larissa claims she has no idea who Aiden is.

Now she’s back….

It’s a race against time to bring down an operation more evil than his pack ever suspected, and Aiden finds himself working side by side with a mate who no longer trusts him—and she wants out. But he lost her once, and he won’t let her go again. Unfortunately, Larissa’s blood is the key to a powerful monster’s dangerous plan—and he’ll stop at nothing to destroy her, sparking off a war between the supernaturals and humans that no one will win.

As she tried to decide where to go a blur of fur hurtled through the air at her. Before she could move, the all-white wolf slammed into her, tackling her to the ground. He rolled their bodies so he took the brunt of the fall.

Surprise ricocheted through her. When he shifted to human form and she found herself pinned underneath the Adonis-looking shifter with blond hair and dark eyes she immediately struck out at him. Weak or not, if this male had killed her parents she’d gut him.

Claws and fangs descended, she slashed at his middle, ripping open his stomach.

“Damn it, Larissa!” He managed to grab her wrists in an impossibly tight grip and hold them above her head, but she didn’t stop.

It vaguely registered that he said her name in a familiar way. As if he had intimate knowledge of her. Kicking and bucking against him, she kneed him hard between the legs as she twisted around to bite his forearm.

The second his blood coated her tongue, a familiar sensation flowed through her with shocking intensity. The taste made her think of raw, earthy sex. She stilled underneath him. He remained on top of her, holding her, and when she met his gaze she could sense his wariness. But he wasn’t trying to hurt her. And he hadn’t been attacking her, just pinning her down and taking her blows.

She tensed when she heard someone nearby, their footfalls soft against the snow, barely indiscernible. The male heard it too and lifted his head, but he never took his dark gaze from hers. “Stay back, I’ve got this.”

“Why do you taste familiar?” she whispered, battling confusion. His blood was still on her tongue and it made her think of dirty, sensual things that shocked her. Even more shocking, she wanted to drink from him.

The male’s eyes bored into hers. Intense. Heated. “Because you’ve tasted every inch of my body, drank from me, defied your coven to be with me.” The longing in his eyes pierced her. He meant every word he was saying. He wasn’t lying. Or he didn’t believe he was lying.

If it was true, she didn’t remember any of it. She fought a shiver. Everything in her brain was muddled and the pain intermixed with desire she saw in that dark gaze was too much. She was so fucking confused right now and sensing his pain hurt her. Even if she didn’t understand why, she felt his agony bone deep and she desperately wanted to comfort him. She swallowed hard and resisted that urge. “Why can I feel your pain?”

He loosened his grip, freeing her wrists. But he didn’t sit back. Just placed his hands in the light layer of snow on either side of her head, that gaze locked on hers. “Because we’re bondmates.”

#SFRMonday ~ Freedom has a cost in THE KING’S MISTRESS by @RachelLeighGeek #scifirom

#SFRMondayToday for #SFRMonday, I present to you book two in Rachel Leigh Smith’s series, A’yen’s Legacy, The King’s Mistress…

The King's Mistress by Rachel Leigh SmithTHE KING’S MISTRESS

A’yen’s Legacy, Book Two

by Rachel Leigh Smith

Freedom has a cost. Can A’yen pay it without losing his soul?

Liberation of the enslaved Lokmane begins with the king. A’yen and Fae agree to visit the Hidden, a group of escaped Lokmane, to protect his identity while the Shadows make their move with emancipation acts. But he’s not prepared for the prejudice rampant in the Hidden, or their lack of patience for him. And his new linked bodyguard is unstable to the point A’yen fears for the young man’s sanity.

Upon returning to Titan, A’yen is kidnapped and taken to the largest breeding farm in the galaxy. This time he’ll be himself even if it kills him. His resolve to unite his people grows as he wonders if he’ll live long enough to do it.

With A’yen kidnapped, Fae returns to the Lokmane homeworld seeking the final pieces of what happened two thousand years ago when they were conquered and enslaved. Getting as far away from her father as possible is the only way to keep her from disappearing too.

Separated by light years, A’yen and Fae have to stand alone and fight for their right to live in freedom. No matter the cost.

Fae turned by degrees to face him. She tried to glare at him, but eyes reflecting unshed tears said she’d never been more thankful to see him. More fingers of warmth moved through his body. He went to her, folded her in his arms, stared at Benai Hart. She pressed into the safety of his embrace, her trembling forcing the pain to the back of his mind.

“Do you not know who I am?”

“I do. I bow to no one.”

Hart came forward two steps. Fae let go, turned to face her father, and held her hand up. “Don’t you dare. One thing you do understand is property rights and I forbid you to touch what belongs to me.”

A’yen grit his teeth to keep his mouth shut. Being referred to as property didn’t sit well. Brought his hackles up, in fact. She was right, though. Hart understood him only as property. Never as a person. One touch from Hart and he’d be a heap on the floor, totally helpless.

“What belongs to you?” Hart laughed, a bitter sound devoid of mirth. “We both know he cost more than your yearly salary.”

“I didn’t use one cent from you. It all came out of my inheritance from Mom. Tomorrow will be thirty days since we were in the registry office signing the binding papers. Not even you can undo it.” Her voice picked up strength as she talked and the trembling dissipated.

Hart’s right arm went up, the back of his hand poised to strike. A’yen reached out, grabbed his wrist, and squeezed the pressure points. “Don’t you dare.”

He didn’t have the strength to keep the pressure even and Hart jerked his hand free. “If you ever touch me again I’ll make you wish you were dead.”

“I am not afraid of you.”

Hart stood toe-to-toe with Fae, looking past her as if she didn’t exist. “You should be.”

A’yen shook his head. “You’re the one who should be afraid. Now, if you insist on staying, you will be civil to your daughter, or you’re the one whose mind will get messed with.”

It was Hart’s turn to shake his head as he stepped back, eyes hardening. “I underestimated you.”

“Most humans do.”

“Do not underestimate me.” Hart pointed in A’yen’s face.

“Wouldn’t dream of it.” The warmth receded for a moment. He gripped Fae’s waist, leaning his chest against her back to keep from collapsing. The warmth returned and he straightened again.

Hart’s eyes widened for a moment then a mask of neutrality slid across his face. “I’ll give you some time to think about what I said, Farran.” He brushed past them. The door banged shut behind him.

A’yen let go of Fae and sank to the floor, managing to catch himself on the edge of the couch and rest his head on the cushions. Fae knelt, threaded her fingers through his, stroked the side of his face with her other hand. “How did you make it in here?”

“I have no idea.”

The door opened and shut again. A’yen lifted his head to find Pete in the doorway. “How the hell did you get all the way in here?”

He let his head fall. The warmth slipped out of him and the fire roared through exhausted muscles. A groan slid out. Fae’s lips brushed his temple. “Yet to be determined.”

The couch moved as Pete sat on it. “Na’var called as I was getting ready to leave and said to hightail it back because Hart was here. Was that him leaving?”

“Yeah. Things were calm for a couple hours, and he asked all the dutiful questions of someone feigning interest. Then he started getting mad because A’yen was here and…” She sucked in a shuddering breath.

A’yen ignored the pain as best he could, and pulled her into his arms again. “I don’t think he was feigning interest. He really wants to know how much we found.”

Pete nodded. “You didn’t say anything to tip your hand, did you?”

“I don’t think so. He’s not stupid though. Eventually they will figure it out.”

Fae shuddered in his arms and he pillowed his cheek on the top of her head. “If he does, he’ll kill you.”
