Their secret rendezvous ~ #MySexySaturday from MADE FOR HER #eroticromance #99cents

My Sexy Saturday

Hi peeps! It’s the 76th week of My Sexy Saturday. Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.

Today’s theme is…

Your So Sexy

Here’s seven from MADE FOR HER, an erotic sci-fi romance about clones, which is on SALE for only 99¢ during January to celebrate two years published.

Made For Her by Jessica E. Subject

Set-up: Mikayla and Dare are having a secret relationship. Not only is she his superior officer, but Dare is a clone. On this evening, they are celebrating Dare receiving his pilot wings.

Pulling her against him, he gently kissed her lips, but she felt his hunger grow. His tongue sought entrance, sweeping inside her until the kiss consumed her every thought.

Then he let her go. “The food smells delicious. Let’s eat.”

In an attempt to uncurl her toes, she breathed deep. He always managed to rev her engines with a single kiss. “Yes, but don’t eat too much. We’ll be having dessert after.”

He grabbed her ass as she stood at the oven, placing lasagna onto their plates. “Dessert is looking mighty fine right now.”

His teeth and tongue grazed the side of her neck, making her shiver in anticipation.

“Sorry, I had to take a taste.”

Moisture pooled between her legs. Maybe dessert before dinner isn’t such a bad idea.

~ About Made For Her ~

After terrorists murder the love of her life, Colonel Mikayla Jones trains squadron after squadron of the clones he brought to life, to take to the skies. When she discovers a young clone of her husband in her newest class, her world spins out of control. How can she command the look-a-like when she can’t help but yearn for him to fill an ache in her heart?

Dare was created to be the best. As the first Daniel clone to leave Onatria labs, he needs to prove he is more than just a DNA copy. To do that, he must rely on the wife of the man who donated his genes. But when she refuses to train him, Dare faces discharge and returning to the labs. Can he convince Colonel Jones to finish his training and find a way into her bed? Or will long kept secrets unhinge the entire clone project?

Is the astronomer a cure for the space pilot’s broken heart? FAREWELL ANDROMEDA by @SFRLaurie A. Green #scifirom

Farewell Andromeda by Laurie A. Green
FAREWELL ANDROMEDA
by Laurie A. Green

Fresh off a painful jilting, the last thing deep space pilot Tiharra Bell needs is another romantic entanglement. Certainly not with the galaxy’s most famous astronomer—who also happens to be single, inconveniently handsome, and a resident of the remote Andromeda Station. But Tiharra soon discovers two terrible truths about Dr. Dante “Donner” Dane 1) he’s not the man he appears to be and 2) he doesn’t have long to live. Before her fourteen day layover is complete, she’ll put her life and career on the line to protect his heartbreaking secret.

blog space excerpt

I met the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with ten days before he died. Someday, I’ll look back at that time on Andromeda Station and laugh.

I crash landed into Dr. Dante Dane six steps inside the hatch of Trajectory Virtual Pub 7. I knew his name and a good chunk of his bio before he even spoke. I had the advantage.

But he had the element of surprise. “Dance with me, boonie.”

He had me pegged at a glance. Boonie. Independent deep space charter pilot. Good guess on his part, but an easy one with his IQ. You didn’t get much deeper in space than Andromeda Station—perched on the extreme outer fringes of the Milky Way—and I was still sporting my non-standard issue flight jacket and independent star wings. I’d been making my way to the Station Berthing Office when the Pied Piper of a stiff drink called to me.

Running into Tall, Dark, and Smiling hadn’t really been in my game plan.

He settled his warm hand low on the small of my back, inviting me to accompany him to the packed cydosonic dance floor. A heavy bass thumped beneath the trill of a wild counter-melody. My instincts shouted Abort launch! but my curiosity overrode my internal warning system. I was too flattered by his crafty smile and seeking eyes.

On the dance floor, he turned to face me. “What’s your name, boonie?”

“Captain Bell.”

“Captain.” He made a slight bow. “Less formally known as?”

“Tiharra.”

“Tiara?” That smile again. “Like a princess wears?”

“Tee-hara. Like the Egponna tree.”

“Ah, the Tiharra tree. Egponna Maximus heraldi angelus. Also called the Angel Willow. Known for graceful, weeping foliage that resembles feathered wings.”

“That’s the one.”

“Angel fits you better.” He gave me another generous smile. Nice, even white teeth.

I threw him my patented lopsided smirk. It wasn’t love at first sight, but it was definitely intrigue at first contact.

She’s a bad girlfriend ~ Extended Excerpt from BLACK HILLS DESPERADO by D.L. Jackson #shifter

BlackHillsDesperadoBLACK HILLS DESPERADO
by D.L. Jackson

She’s a bad girlfriend.

Nothing Xio Davis does is right. When she abandons her pack, riding out of town on the back of a stranger’s motorcycle, she finds she’s bitten off more than she can chew. First, it’s small-time crimes, then bank robbery. As Xio sinks into the criminal underworld, the FBI catches up with her. Now, she’s got one way out: snitch.

When Xio turns state’s evidence against a Mexican drug lord, Agent Marcus Cazador steps up to take her home, giving up his career, his place in the El Paso pack, and all he knows to protect her.

Xio claims she’s not the same wolf who left ten years before, but can she convince Marcus she’s changed her wicked ways? Or will the Black Hills be the end of the road on her long journey to redemption?

Available January 23, 2015. Pre-order from:

Enjoy An Excerpt

“A bank that’s never been robbed. There’s a first time for everything.”

State-of-the-art security. Armed rent-a-cops stationed on either side of the double doors. A busy street making a speedy getaway difficult. A lot of excellent reasons for Xio Davis get back in her Beemer and get out of Dodge.

None good enough to deter her from a challenge.

The two men who’d ridden with her climbed out. The bigger of the pair, Juan, rolled his shoulders before reaching into the cab for a ski mask and weapon, then passing it off to Miguel. “Catch.” He grabbed another and tossed it over the roof to her.

She caught it, slammed a full magazine home, and tucked it under her duster. With a wink, she retrieved her Day of the Dead mask from a recent celebration. “Okay, boys. Let’s break their lucky streak.”

Diego gave her the freedom to do whatever she wanted these days, as long as she kept his bed warm, and whenever she left his hacienda, she remembered to take her escorts with her. Maybe it was his way of keeping his eye on her—or on his money. Whatever the reason, she didn’t like it, so Xio kept the boys too busy to stick their noses in her personal business. Too busy to get close to the truth.

He didn’t smack her around or pass her among his friends and associates. And his men had long ago learned to respect her personal space. After one of his new hires had groped her, the man had lost a couple fingers and ended up in a body cast. Diego didn’t have to say a word or do anything to intervene. She’d policed her own problems.

Her boyfriend had grown busy with cartel business and that suited her fine. Never present, all the better. They didn’t love each other, but had an understanding. He provided for her, protected her when she needed it. She scratched his itch and spent his money.

But life had grown dull. Triggered by a botched bank robbery in El Paso, a restlessness had begun to swell inside her. Why, after all these years, she didn’t know, but it was there, a constant reminder she’d shackled her true nature in her quest to be free.

Her wolf constantly paced in her consciousness. Xio found herself unable to settle, shift, or run in the wilds as her inner beast demanded. Not because she physically couldn’t but because outside forces conspired against her. That was what happened when you lived with humans.

Wolf—dog—it didn’t matter. All made great sausage for hungry families in the villages surrounding the Sanchez ranch, and it was a risk she hadn’t taken in the ten years’ time since she’d almost ended up in a taco on some family’s dinner table.

She didn’t want to be in Mexico, and she didn’t want to be with Diego anymore, but she really didn’t have a choice or anywhere else to go. Hence, the reason she’d crossed the border for this small amusement. Perhaps she could get some of the pent-up energy out. Open a valve and vent.

Speaking of which….

Xio pulled the mask over her eyes and strode through the front doors of the bank. Her two team members flanked her.

No one seemed to notice them yet. Not very observant for a bank that claimed to have a robbery-free record. Deciding to wake them all up, she yanked an AKS-762 assault rifle—with a custom stock and barrel that catered to her size—from under her canvas duster and fired several rounds into the ceiling. Chunks of plaster rained down on the patrons in the lobby. Multiple people screamed and several of the customers hit the floor before she needed to provide them with instruction. Conversely, not everyone appeared to be a rocket scientist. Not a problem. She had great communication skills and hearing protection in her ears.

Xio fired a second time, bringing down more of the ceiling. She pointed at the floor. “On your bellies, ladies and gentlemen.” As though doing the “wave” at a sporting event, they dropped.

She strolled to the front of bank, kicked over one of the posts holding a velvet rope, and stepped over it. She’d never been patient enough to wait in line and wasn’t about to run their little maze now. Xio removed her earplugs and tuned in with her wolf hearing, listening for anyone who might want to be a hero. Not a peep—some crying, but that was par for the course.

Not a daredevil in the bunch.

She eyed the staff on the floor. The one thing all bankers feared was a robber who jumped the teller line, and she was about to become their worst nightmare. They’d taken classes, trained for robberies, all bank staff did—and what did their security specialists warn them about? Her—joining them behind the counter, up close and personal, with a loaded weapon.

“Palms on the floor and your ankles crossed. I haven’t got all day.”

She stopped at one of the windows and without the use of her hands, jumped up on the marble countertop. At five feet two, the feat should have been impossible for a human female of her stature, but she wasn’t completely human—and impossible wasn’t in her vocabulary. In fact, that was why she’d come here, chosen this robbery-proof bank. It was a matter of honor, and a little about her ego. The branch had never been successfully robbed, and she’d decided to change that.

It was Wednesday, the day after their big shipment came in, and the third of the month, when a large majority of seniors got their Social Security checks. Prime for the picking. The setup couldn’t be any sweeter.

She cocked her head and listened for sirens in the distance. Five minutes out, if her hearing served correct. “Here’s how we are going to do this. When I tap you on the shoulder, you get up and fill the backpack with cash. No bait bills. I can tell what they are, so don’t fuck with me.” She hopped off the counter and behind the teller line, nudging the first person there with the flash suppressor on the end of her weapon. “Move.”

With tears in her eyes, the teller staggered to her feet, blubbering something about children at home. Over the last ten years, Xio had heard every story imaginable, and the young woman’s tale did little to change what she planned to do. No, she’d never killed anyone, nor did she intend to start today, but they didn’t know that.

“Save the speech and stuff the bag.” She shoved the backpack into the blonde’s hands. “Now.”

The young woman pulled the drawer open and grabbed handfuls of cash, leaving the bait bill in the till as instructed. Xio didn’t need to see the special ultraviolet ink on it to know what it was. Her wolf could smell that it had been handled a multitude of times by the same person. Once the teller finished, Xio shoved her back to the floor and nudged the next. “Your turn.”

All followed instruction, until she reached the last person, a man. Something about him raised her hackles. She should have listened to the warning, but there were still two minutes left and she’d yet to empty the commercial drawer, where they kept the big money. Greed won over instinct, and Xio toed him with her combat boot. “Up, big boy.”

And wasn’t that understatement of the year? As he stood, she realized he had to be at least six feet four, dwarfing her tiny frame. He didn’t look like your typical banker, at least not any she’d dealt with in the past, and he sure as hell didn’t smell like a banker.

Wolf. Shit.

He looked her in the eyes, holding her gaze for a few seconds, making her trigger-finger itch. She wore a mask from a recent Day of the Dead celebration and had salted her words with a Spanish accent, so unless he could pick out her eyes in a lineup, he wouldn’t be able to identify her.

Regardless, she found his action brazen, considering she’d already fired several rounds, though not enough he’d think her magazine empty. None of the others so much as looked at her. This one had the balls to take a mental snapshot that would help a sketch artist. The last thing she needed. There was also one other thing missing. Fear.

The feeling prodding her before roared to life. Cop. Ah, that’s the reason his scent had seemed so familiar. Double shit. Not only was he a cop, but they’d crossed paths before. This was the man, or should she say wolf, who had been on her trail for months, since her gang had slipped up in El Paso. Lord knew she’d tried to ditch him. Once a wolf got a scent of his prey, he didn’t back down. Things had just gone from bad to worse. She wasn’t sure what pack he was from. More than likely the El Paso Cazador in Southern Texas. Wolves didn’t tend to stray too far from their territories, not higher-ranking pack members, anyway. Something told her he was up there in the group, a Beta, if not an Alpha. The stench of authority clung to him.

Wolf or not, one thing was for certain. He wasn’t here to administer pack law. Suddenly nervous—something that never happened to her—Xio stepped back to put space between them.

She’d walked them into a trap, and if what she saw in the man’s eyes was correct, a carefully orchestrated one. Her only advantage was that she still had a loaded assault rifle. “We need to leave. Now,” she called out to her crew, who were supposed to be watching the customers in the lobby.

No sound. No confirmation they’d heard her. Not good. She couldn’t smell them, but that didn’t mean anything. They could be near an air-conditioning vent or fresh-air exchange. Wouldn’t be the first time it’d happened. She chanced a glance back to see what they were doing, and saw no sign of them. Shit! They’d either bailed, left her to take the fall, or they’d already been apprehended while she’d been preoccupied with cleaning out the teller stations.

As she turned to address the cop, her weapon was wrenched away and the butt caught her in the jaw. Xio dropped like a bag of rocks. Her wolf wasn’t helping her out of this one. That was what she got for letting her ego get involved.

“Good morning, Miss Davis. Let me introduce myself. I’m Special Agent Marcus Cazador of the FBI. Didn’t anyone ever tell you banks are most often robbed within the first few minutes of opening? We figured you’d be here, after the invitation we’d extended. Safest bank in Texas. I can see you liked the billboard at the port of entry. You and I have a lot to talk about, but business first.”

He’d used her real name, one she hadn’t heard in ten years. It sounded strange coming from his mouth, but also right, as though he’d been born to say it. Not good. This man was dangerous in so many ways. “Bite me.”

#SFRMonday2

Author K.G. Stutts brings us the final book in her sweet sci-fi romance Mirror trilogy…

Mirror Reformed by Kristina StuttsMIRROR REFORMED
by K.G. Stutts

The ISC’s most dangerous foe, the Synth, is threatening Earth. Mack, Maddie, and their team scramble to come up with a plan to defeat them one and for all. As the planet’s safety is in jeopardy, the team will have to put it all on the line, or give their lives in the process.

blog space excerpt

Jackson and Mack climbed into a flyer toward the alpha site to meet with the contingent of representatives in the ISC organization. Races from across the galaxy joined to meet with them. There were dozens that couldn’t meet due to the distance in the short amount of time Jackson gave them, so they were being represented by a hologram.

“This looks like the Jedi Council,” Mack murmured. Jackson nodded.

Over sixty representatives sat on red cushioned, rounded chairs in a circle. Mack and Jackson stood at the center with a universal translator droid. They took a moment for everyone to get settled before speaking.

“My friends, thank you for meeting with us on such short notice,” Jackson began.

“What is this about?” A tiny voice squeaked.

Mack looked over at the hologram image of Rachel from the Agonahan home world. “Earth is being threatened.”

A garbled voice from a yellow-skinned Senub race grabbed their attention. It took a moment before the universal language droid translated. “By whom?”

“A race known as the Synth,” Jackson explained.

The gathered crowd began to speak all at once at the mere mention of the name. It took several minutes to calm everyone down.

“Surely, you must be mistaken,” a representative from Bespe spoke up.

“If only we were,” Mack said.

“The Synth died out thousands of years ago,” the Bespian argued.

“Always been a mystery, the Synth are,” said a Solarian. “Much we don’t know.”

“If they have resurfaced, this could only spell doom for the galaxy,” Rachel chimed in.

“Bedtime stories,” a Zomhun said gruffly. “The Synth aren’t real.”

“No, they are very real,” Jackson replied. “If you don’t believe me, check your own sensors in quadrant seven. You’ll see their ship.”

Several of the contingents muttered, pulling out their comms to speak with their ship. Mack and Jackson waited with bated breath as the responses began to filter in. Each ship reported just as Jackson had said.

“Seems the human speaks the truth,” the Bespian reluctantly admitted.

“Hu-man need help from Argafforn?” the cousin of the Fabrega asked.

“We’re asking for anyone’s help who can give it,” Jackson said.

A Syareblayn named Murokk snorted. “Help? To evacuate your planet?”

“To fight them,” Mack replied.

“You can’t fight them. You can’t reason with them.”

“So what do you suggest then, Murokk?” Mack asked. “For us to give up?”

“Surrender will save millions of your kind.”

“No.” Jackson shook his head.

A long and loud shriek from a Boshol made everyone cover their ears. After a moment, the droid translated.

“Your people will perish. Do not ask for mine to do the same.”

“Arrogant,” an Eaygrn huffed. “You Terrans are too arrogant for your kind.”

“We should help,” a Qeete named Murrsee stated.

“I agree,” a Setol said. “The Synth will not stop with the Terrans.”

“Do you at least have a plan other than asking us to risk our lives?” Murokk asked.

“We have a few,” Mack stated.

“We understand this is our fight,” Jackson said. “We do have strategies in place for this upcoming battle. We’re not asking for you to do anything we wouldn’t do for you in this situation.”

The room fell silent. The droid translated for several of the alien races. A murmur began in the crowd, growing among the gathered representatives.

“The Intergalactic Security Commission was created for this purpose,” Murrsee spoke up. “What kind of allies are we if we expect you to come to us, but we turn you away in your time of need?”

Mack let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you.”

Several more volunteered their help. By the end of the meeting, more than half of the group offered fighters. Those who couldn’t or wouldn’t assist, Jackson assured them it wouldn’t hurt their position in the ISC.

The hologram attendees disconnected from the meeting. Those willing to fight stayed to go over strategies with Jackson. Mack flew back to Earth.

Under her scars, she’s beautiful in UNKNOWN FUTURES #MySexySaturday #1NS #FFromance

My Sexy Saturday

Thank you so much for joining me for week 75 of My Sexy Saturday!

I’M SO SEXY!

This week’s theme is I’m So Sexy and there’s nothing more interesting that someone who exudes sexiness but doesn’t flaunt it. These are those who are naturally sexy, like the girl or boy next door. Or the boss who acts like a nerd. Or maybe one who wears something that makes someone want to strip them bare. Those are the characters we want to read about. Those with city, country or maybe even other-worldly charm that knocks our socks off every time.

This week, I’m giving you seven from UNKNOWN FUTURES,

which is on sale for 99¢ during the month of January

to celebrate three years published. Enjoy!

Set-up: Because of the scars on her face and the chastisement she’s received for being a lesbian, Jewel prefers to hide in the shadows. But V wants her to see how beautiful she is.

V left Jewel in her spare room to rest. The poor woman had so little self-confidence.

So what if her face was scarred. She still had the most appealing blue eyes and such soft,

creamy skin. Her wavy brown hair would make most women jealous and men want to run

their fingers through her locks. She couldn’t stop touching the petite beauty. Who on

Earth had made her feel so insecure?

Well, I know what I have to do. She would take her out, show her that she didn’t have

to be afraid to be seen in public, that she truly was a precious gem.

She smiled, thinking of the surprised expression on Jewel’s face when they’d been

sucked up into the tube. And when they’d landed…. Maybe she should have tried harder

to keep her standing, but she’d rather enjoyed landing on top of her. She’d rolled off

quickly to keep from kissing her charge. After all, Jewel had traveled there for a date, or

so she said. But with whom, and why hadn’t the director included that fact in her

briefing?

V grabbed the tote full of Earth food, which had come up through the cargo tube with

Jewel’s luggage. Inside she found pasta, bread, cheese, garlic, red sauce and—oh yeah!—

strawberries. Her stomach growled already. She hadn’t had anything besides replicator

food in months, the portal being too expensive to start up for only Terran food.

A beautiful woman and delicious food? Perfect. No! She couldn’t have lustful feelings

for her charge. She’d make dinner—anything to distract her from slipping into the

bedroom and crawling into bed with her houseguest.

It had been so long since she’d been with anyone. Gar, a Phantie she worked with at

the hotel, had asked her several times to be one of his bedmates, but she’d turned him

down. He didn’t understand monogamy. When she chose a partner, whether male or

female, she didn’t want to share them with anyone else. Gar’s current collection of

bedmates consisted of five females, each from a different planet.

She started a pot of water boiling for the pasta then opened her last bottle of Canadian

Ice Wine and poured herself a glass. She had found a reason to drink it. Now, if only she

could figure out a way to get Jewel to the club without making her turn green again.

#SFRMonday ~ TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY by Pippa Jay @PippaJayGreen #scifirom

#SFRMonday2

Pippa Jay’s Terms & Conditions Apply is my first guest book to be featured as part of  #SFRMonday. (This story is one of my SFR Recommended Reads.)

Terms and Conditions Apply by Pippa JayTERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY

a scifi romance short story

by Pippa Jay

“Welcome to Venus Ascendant, a Public Grade space station in the Andromedan Sector. With our open-to-all policy, any being in the universe can find their perfect R & R, romantic getaway or dangerous liaison at our purpose built resort. The on-board empathic AI Ganesa ensures that anyone coming to Venus Ascendant will find their heart’s desire, with suites that transform from luxurious boudoirs to sunset-lit beaches to dark BDSM dungeons. So come to Venus Ascendant and find exactly what you’re looking for!”

It was meant to be a romantic getaway for Marie and the love of her life Jaisen; a chance for him to get to know her better after months of her denying him more than a few stolen kisses. Instead, Marie finds herself dumped and alone on Venus Ascendant with no credit for a transmat and the next starship home not due for another hour.

But the all-seeing AI isn’t going to leave anyone aboard the space station with their dreams unfulfilled. Marie’s boyfriend might not have made it to the station, but there are others willing and able to take on the role – even if they aren’t entirely human.

A 2013 Gulf Coast RWA Chapter Silken Sands Self-Published Star Award Finalist

blog space excerpt

Marie jerked her gaze up to meet that of the man before her, then reassessed her first thought. This was no normal man. Although the impossibly deep, almost indigo blue of his eyes held her, she noted the silvery sheen of his skintight one-piece with the logo VASA at the shoulder that marked him as one of Venus Ascendant’s subsidiary avatars. Her distress at Jaisen’s message had no doubt sparked the AI into an immediate response—that kind of emotional hit on its empathic sensors wouldn’t have been missed, although it was probably equivalent to no more than a poke in the eye. For Marie, it was like someone carving out her heart with a blunt instrument.

“No intention of mine,” she snapped.

Not now. Not ever!

“Perhaps I can be of service?”

Marie stared at him…at it. She’d heard about the VA avatars but never been so close to one. She’d learned from the space station’s blurb that the main AI took the form of a young Indian woman called Ganesa, spoken of with as much reverence as the bronze-cast deity behind her. This particular avatar had been crafted into a ruggedly handsome, if stereotypically human, male. Thick blond hair left a shade too long framed his face perfectly; darker brows arched over eyes the most glorious shade of deep blue she’d ever seen. He was broad shouldered and athletic, and the thin, snug-fitting one-piece in gray outlined the well-defined musculature of his torso in a way no doubt intended to draw attention and tease the imagination of potential clients. A shapely hint of what lay beneath without full disclosure, like the metallic foil used to cover chocolate treats. Also a complete contrast to the man she’d hoped to see, and all too perfect to be real.

“I don’t need your service, thank you very much.” She jumped up and tried to shove past him, but the dense composition of an avatar meant she only jarred her arm and had to sidle past in an embarrassingly servile fashion. He made no attempt to stop her, and she headed blindly down the nearest access corridor.

BEST FRIENDS ~ The 24 Hour Wooden Spoon Writing Challenge #YAlit #YoungAdult #FREEread

The 24hr Wooden Spoon Challenge

On Friday evening, I was challenged by an author I admire, D.L. Jackson, to participate in the 24 Hour Wooden Spoon Writing Challenge. She challenged me to write a 2,000 word Young Adult bi story with a sweet heat level. And Anastasia Vitsky, another wonderful author, added another challenge… No science fiction is allowed. Oh, and the story has to have a wooden spoon in it.

Well, I did it. I finished the story last night and sent it to those ladies to read. And now here’s the story for you to enjoy….

BEST FRIENDS
by Jessica E. Subject

© Jessica E. Subject, 2015

“Enough already.” I slammed the wooden spoon on the counter and stared across the island to Phaedra, pouting at the kitchen table. “Forget making cookies. We need to do something else to help you get over Coulson.”

As captain of the girls’ basketball team, my best friend had believed she was a perfect match for the captain of the boys’ team. I admit, they would look good together, both tall and fit, and with plenty in common. But, Coulson hadn’t believed the same thing. While we were all friends, he’d told Phaedra he didn’t see her as any more than one of his teammates, a buddy and nothing more. And he crushed her heart.

A week later, and I was still trying to cheer her up. Her game had suffered and she didn’t seem to care.

She buried her head under her arms. “Don’t even mention his name.”

I joined her at the table, laying my head on my arms. “Whether you like it or not, you’re going to see him again on Monday. And he still wants to be your friend. Why are you letting this get you down?”

“Never mind.” She pulled the hood of her sweatshirt over her head. “You wouldn’t understand.”

Ugh, not this argument again. Just because I chose to focus on my studies and sports, keys to getting into a good university, my friends believed I wasn’t interested in a relationship. The truth was, I hadn’t found anyone worth getting all googly-eyed over. I went to dances and stuff with guys, but they were usually using me to make another girl jealous. I didn’t care, I still had fun. And I wasn’t about to let my friend stop having fun, either.

“Let’s do something.” Somehow, some way, I would get her out of her slump.

“I thought we were baking cookies.”

I flipped her hood off her head and brushed her away her dark hair so I could actually see her face. “We were, but you weren’t helping very much. If Coach Gayl was in town, I would say we could go to the gym and shoot some hoops, but not today.”

“Proof I’m not supposed to do anything for the entire weekend.”

“C’mon, Phae, why do you have to be so difficult? I hate seeing you so down in the dumps.” I wish I could rewind back to the moments before she asked out Coulson, advise her not to do it. I usually tried to remain positive, but it was difficult with Miss Moppey-pants. Never mind how out of character this behavior was for her.

She groaned and finally sat up. “If you got a C on a test or assignment, you’d be like this, too. I’m sorry that you have a problem with me being upset.”

I put my hand over hears, craving my friend back, wanting to take away all the pain she felt. “I know, and you would do everything you could to cheer me up, too. I just don’t want to see you hurting, okay?”

She glanced at me, finally making eye contact. But her expression was unreadable, unlike any emotion I’d ever seen her convey before. She smiled, but then it wavered and she shook her head. “Fine. What do you want to do?”

“Let’s go skating.” My father built a rink in our backyard every winter, like many parents on the block. Growing up in Canada where hockey is the sport to play, everyone either had a rink in their backyard, or knew someone who did. It was mostly for my younger brother to practice his stellar hockey moves—the great goalie that he wanted to become. But when he wasn’t home, I liked to just go out and skate around without anyone telling me I was stopping wrong, or that I needed to take bigger strides.

“You know that’s not my idea of fun. Besides, I don’t have my skates here. I’ve lost them.” She raised her brows, as if she’d won and would get out of skating.

“You didn’t lose them, you just left them here. They’re in my room. I’ll go get them.” Before she could object, I rushed upstairs to grab the skates. Maybe the blast of cold air would knock her out of her funk, or just watching me fall on my butt. I may have been graceful on the court, but not so much on the ice. Even the skating lessons hadn’t helped. I think my instructor had deemed me unteachable when it came to moving around the rink. Hence why I never went out on the rink with my family home.

After finding the skates tucked in my closet, I rushed back down the stairs. Phaedra was already waiting in the mud room, getting her coat and mittens on. The temperature was better today, closer to the freezing point than it had been all week. As long as we kept moving on the ice, we wouldn’t get too cold. And as long as I didn’t crash into the snow bank at the edge of the rink, but hey, I wanted to stay positive.

Once we were both dressed in our winter gear and had our skates tied up as tight as possible, we wobbled outside. I wasn’t much better walking through the snow with my skates on than I was actually on the ice, but I made it to the bench without falling. We sat down to take off our skate guards—I hadn’t learned to take them off on the fly like my brother who always went racing outside of the house with his skates on right after he came home from school. Thank goodness a hockey tournament kept him away for the day.

I turned to Phaedra. “You ready for some laughs?”

She smiled, the twinkle in her eyes finally returning. “Sure, but it may be you laughing at me today. It’s been a long time since I’ve been on the ice.”

Holding her hand, I shuffled toward the rink. Actually getting on was the hardest for me, the moment I fell most often. If I got on without landing on my butt, or taking Phaedra down with me, I’d won. And I did. No need to have to give up already from a bruised tailbone.

“Good work, Buzz. Now let’s see how long you can stay on your feet.”

I couldn’t help but smile, even if she was poking fun at me. Having her make jokes meant I had my best friend back again. She’d finally stopped dwelling on Coulson. And she was back to using my nickname. My name is Beth, Bethany to be exact, but all my friends called me B. I guess just to shorten it down. Somehow, when I reached high school and started playing basketball, my nickname changed to Buzz. I guess because of the insect, but I didn’t object. Though it really messed with our opponents when my teammates started buzzing around the court.

Phaedra skated around the rink ahead of me. Once, she’d been behind and had her own accident as a result of my fall. We’d both ended up limping off the ice and needed an cold pack for our injuries. With the championship games coming up, we couldn’t afford to get seriously hurt.

“So, is there someone else you have your eye one? Someone to take Coulson’s place?” Sure, she wasn’t totally over his rejection yet, but I wanted to put the idea in her head. If she focused her attention on someone else, maybe seeing him in the halls wouldn’t be so hard for her.

Phaedra spun around and grabbed my hands. A completely unexpected move. I lost my balance. My feet slid out from under me and I hit the surface of the ice, hard, taking my best friend down with me. The wind had been knocked out of me from the impact. I struggled to catch my breath.

Phaedra laughed beside me, obviously not as stunned as me. “You should have seen your face. Your mouth was a perfect o before you went down.”

I rolled onto my side and pushed myself up. “Yeah, funny. I think I’m going to sit for a minute.” Though my ego was more hurt than anything. Phaedra, who hadn’t donned a pair of skates all season, managed to learn to skate backward. Me, I couldn’t even go forward without falling.

Plopping onto the wooden bench that acted like a hockey bench when my brother’s friends came over, I wiped off the ice flakes and snow from my coat and pants. “I don’t get it. How am I the worst skater in the world?”

“And yet so graceful on the court?” Phaedra sat down beside her. “I’m not sure, but I’m glad you’re on my team.”

I let the warm fuzzies fill me for a moment, but I was more happy my best friend seemed to be feeling better. “And I’m glad your mood has improved.”

“Well, you got me thinking.” She put her hands behind her and leaned back on them, sticking her feet out in front of her. “There is someone else that I do like. Someone I’ve liked for a long time, but have been too afraid to tell them.”

“Who?” My best friend has a secret crush I didn’t know about? How was that even possible?

“I’m not sure I want to say. It’s not like with Coulson where I can go back to being friends with this person. I mean, if I tell them, it will change everything.”

I leaned forward, still in shock. “I don’t think it would be any different than Coulson. And I can’t believe you haven’t told me. I still am your best friend, right?”

“Yes.” She sighed and glanced down at her lap, brushing away snow that had just fallen on her pants. “That’s the problem, because it’s you I like.”

“Yeah, we’re best friends. I get that.” Why was she beating around the bush?

“No, I mean it’s you I have a crush on.”

“What?” I cocked my head to the side. “You have a crush on me?”

Phaedra put her head in her hands. “I never should have said anything. I’m so dumb.”

“No, you’re not.” A warmth I had never experienced before filled me, like coming inside on a cold day, yet different. There was a fluttering in my stomach I couldn’t explain. “It’s just, I thought you liked guys.”

“I do. I just like girls, too.” She glanced up, a tear streaming down her cheek.

I wiped it away. “Why are you crying?”

“Because I never should have said anything. I don’t want to lose my best friend.”

“I’m still here. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Really? You’re okay with it?”

“Yes.” Though maybe a bit surprised anyone would have a crush on me. “I just don’t understand why you didn’t tell me sooner.”

“I was afraid. I didn’t think you’d be so calm about it. Not with your family.”

“Hey, my uncle is gay, and my cousin is bisexual. And there are some members of my family I’m not too sure about.”

“Oh….”

Seconds passed. And then minutes. Phaedra didn’t utter another word, and I didn’t know what to say. I’d never thought about dating anyone before, let alone a female, but now I couldn’t stop thinking about a dream I’d had about my best friend, where we’d kissed, and more. I’d brushed it aside, thinking it nothing more than stress about an upcoming game, but perhaps it meant something else.

I reached over and clasped Phaedra’s hand. “So, what do you want to do about your crush?”

She gasped, looking at me with wide eyes. “You’re bisexual, too? Or a lesbian?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know what I am, but I wouldn’t object to being your best friend and your girlfriend.”

Phaedra squealed and wrapped her arms around me. “I can’t believe this. I must be dreaming.”

“No, not dreaming.” Not with the sudden tingling in my fingers and toes, the butterflies in my stomach now on overdrive.

She leaned back, clearing her throat. “Can I…. Can I kiss you?”

I nodded, my heart threatening to pound its way out of my chest.

Placing her hand on the back of my head, Phaedra leaned toward me until our lips met. It was a little awkward at first, but I closed my eyes and matched her gentle sweeps, my body humming with contentment and desire. In all my life, I didn’t think I needed a boyfriend or girlfriend. Not until this moment.
