Hopeless Living & The Truth About Living Hope Ministries

Subscribe now

I needed to speak out against conversion therapy and other harmful practices. It was important for my healing as an ex-gay survivor and for accountability to the public as a former leader.

Here are some quotes from the excellent resource booklet “Hopeless Living” and my response to some of the quotes from Wayne’s opening note about my involvement.

Tragically, Living Hope Ministries peddles nothing but false hope. They seduce new clients with love bombing and dangle carrots of “communi...

No Kings Day, Orlando

Yesterday was quite the experience, though not exactly a blast. I spent about two hours in Downtown Orlando with my friend Allen, and guess what? Thousands of people were there!

We had a few close calls with MAGA cult members shouting, “KING Trump!” and that led to an exchange of both sides saying “f*ck you!” But thankfully, no physical violence and no one got hurt. Some religious evangelical Christian Nationalists showed up too, but they quickly realized no one was paying attention to them and ...

The Spiritual Bypass

Mr. Preacher has an idea… for your “spiritual maturity.”

“They (those who consider themselves spiritually mature) might assume their spiritual status excuses or transcends their personal shortcomings. This creates a kind of spiritual bypass—where faith becomes a way to avoid real growth instead of catalyzing it.

“Spiritual maturity” is tossed around in religious circles as a pathway to righteousness and wisdom; that phrase is especially prevalent in para-church ministries that have a ...

The Healing Power of Creative Expression

Not a complete or finished project I am working on. Saṃsāra #2 is still in process :)

It’s been a little over three weeks and I have unpaused my Thrive Substack newsletter(s) after some much needed “rest” in the amount of unnecessary online time and energy consuming distractions I led myself into. Now to this post…

The Scary Doodle

What do you see in the partial and incomplete painting above? This is the kind of art that I’ve been making since I was old enough to pick up a pencil. As a child, I tur...

Thrive w/ Randy Scobey on Indefinite Pause

I know, I know, changes yet again.

After waking up to the verge of a panic attack this morning I decided to pause my Substack. After some soul-searching I realized that I have waaaaaayyyyy too much on my plate. I am a corporate trainer, and work has gotten super busy with developing resources, creating trainings, traveling, and blah blah blah.

All my creative writing and presenting powers get depleted in trying to write articles for here.

Also, I remembered this morning while taking a lot of deep b...

Easter Weekend Rumination

Easter is still a meaningful celebration for me. Alongside my love for the Divine, I no longer worry about “Satan Bunny,” and I can wear pretty Easter bonnets if I want to.

My first Easter “Resurrection Sunday” as a born-again believer…

If you’re wondering why I have “Easter” marked out like that, it’s because I was once led to believe that Easter was a blasphemous holiday—created to counter the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the conservative evangelical world I was part o...

You’re a Wolf…

A few months after coming out, I tried the Scruff app. I flirted but didn’t send explicit photos; just my profile picture. I only met one guy in person who seemed surprised I suggested coffee first.

When he arrived at Starbucks, it was all pleasantries and smiles. I thought, “This is what it means when they don’t look like their photo from 20 years ago.” Still, he was handsome. After the initial banter, he said, “Yo...

Ask It Basket–"In your memoir, did you feel it was important to talk about your sexuality and sexual experiences?"

In your memoir, did you feel it was important to talk about your sexuality and sexual experiences? Why or why not?

Sexuality…

That’s exactly why I wrote the book! My sexuality and the struggles I faced with embracing it led to some crazy and amazing life experiences.

After decades in the ex-gay world, having been out as a gay man who went into the church closet, and then coming back out in 2015, I held strong beliefs about sexuality, ranging from religious stigmatized theology to full affirmation.

W...

You Define Your Journey

It’s pernicious how evil the ex-gay double-bind question of, "Are you at a crossroads?" in your faith is one is a good example. It creates unnecessary cognitive dissonance that breeds despair and destruction.

The Ex-Gay Double Bind

For those that may not know, a double bind question means (from Wikipedia):

A double bind is a dilemma in communication where an individual receives two or more reciprocally conflicting messages. It is a difficult situation in which, whatever action you deci...
