Redemption Comes at a Price

He could very easily  picture his life like this. With a woman who loved him and smiled at him like  he wasn’t a monster.

Except he was.

The Beast of Ravenston takes Elizabeth from Betraying Ever After and throws her into a place she fears more than

any other… Ravenston. A small town in the middle of a thick forest, Ravenston is home to the Duke– Nicholas Wellington– a man who not only has been scarred by a fire but also is a man to be feared. He lives up to his reputation as “The Beast.”
Nicholas wants to know who set the fire that disfigured him, which means helping Mr. Dodsworth.
Except what Mr. Dodsworth wants Nicholas to do is worse than anything he’s done in his past: make the girl pay.

Can Nicholas do what needs to be done to get his revenge? Or will Elizabeth steal something he didn’t know he still had– his heart?

*¨*.¸¸.✶*¨`*NEW RELEASE*.✫*¨*.¸¸.✶*¨`*

The Calibans (The Purgatorium Series, Book Three) was released yesterday, and three people won signed paperback copies in a Goodreads giveaway.

Congratulations to Samantha Gunning of Ontario; Ashlynne Rigney of Bishop, California; and Velda Bigknife of Great Falls, Montana! Your books are on the way!

In this final book of The Purgatorium Series, The Calibans, Daphne returns to the island to save her best friend, Cam, and the other “Calibans” who’ve been brainwashed by Dr. Gray; but, once again, things aren’t what they seem. Daphne’s entire world comes crashing down along with the Purgatorium when federal ATF officers arrive with a warrant during a dangerous exercise. What she believed to be so isn’t, and the blurry line between art and reality leaves her reeling.

Announcing My BIG Secret!

Those of you who follow me regularly know that I’ve been hiding something.

Something has been brewing with some movers and shakers in the indie publishing industry!

If you’ll recall, a few months ago, I joined a team called Indie Visible, a referral site that vets the various industry professionals–such as cover artists, website designers, editors, photographers, marketing experts, book formatters, and publicists–and recommends them to authors looking for guidance as they navigate the sometimes scary road of self-publishing. Indie Visible’s motto is: “Defending literary justice for all.”

My role, until recently, has been to contribute articles to the Indie Visible blog.

Little did I know that this group of amazing professionals had something much bigger in mind for me!

Because I track my sales daily and keep records of all my marketing experiments, they collectively propositioned me. And I couldn’t refuse!

They want to give me an EXTREME MAKEOVER!

It’s like I’ve won the frickin’ LOTTERY!

All of these amazing professionals are going to revamp my covers, redesign my website, re-envision my logo, rethink my brand, and restructure my marketing plan.

It’s not that I haven’t done a good job on my own. In fact, I’ve managed to do quite well.

Indie Visible wants to take me to the next level…and beyond!

They want to use me as their guinea pig in a massive, long-term case study to show the world just how far an indie author can go if she or he has the right team of professionals working together.

They essentially want to make me a rock star!

I want to point out that there’s nothing wrong with my current covers or my website. My cover artist is a rock star in her own right, and she created designs based on my wants and needs. My readers and I both have LOVED my covers. And my website, while not fancy, has gotten better and better over the past few years.

But the professionals over at Indie Visible want the covers and the website and the logo and the branding to all talk to each other and impact my target audience in a new way.

“We can rebuild her,” they said.

So we are kicking things off with a revamping of the covers in my Purgatorium Series. A “revamping” maintains the original concept but puts a new spin on it. The original concept and photography (which I love) were created by Melinda VanLone. Then Victoria Faye of Whit & Whare added her new spin (which I also love):

EPohler_Purgatorium_eCover_450x675

EPohler_Grays_Domain_eCover_450x675

EPohler_TheCalibans_eCover_450x675

So what do you think?

This is only the beginning.

“We can rebuild her,” they said.

I Have a Secret

Something exciting is coming!

I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

I will reveal the news at my release-day party on Facebook on February 25th at 7 PM CST here.

The Calibans Release Banner

All of YOU (my blog subscribers), plus my newsletter subscribers, will find out a day early. I will post about my news here on February 24th!

But please still come to the release party for the games and prizes! I will be giving away books, t-shirts, a silver bracelet, and the Athena Locket!

I’m THRILLED with the conclusion of this series and a little sad it’s over.  The concept for The Purgatorium was my very first story idea. It wasn’t the first book I wrote, but it was my first concept. It nagged and nagged and nagged at me until I finally wrote it. The idea came to me over fifteen years ago. I’m so happy to finally see it in its final form. I hope you love the series and all the fascinating concepts about life, loss, psychology, and art as much as I do. I also hope you agree with the reviewers so far who have called this series “riveting,” “spine-chilling,” and “unpredictable.”

If you’ve never seen the trailer for The Purgatorium, it’s only 40 sec., and you can watch it here.

I hope to see you at the party! Don’t forget, the first book is FREE!

Rose Garcia is a lawyer turned writer who’s always been fascinated by science fiction and fantasy. From a very young age, she often had her nose buried in books about other-worlds, fantastical creatures, and life and death situations. More recently she’s been intrigued by a blend of science fiction and reality, and the idea that some supernatural events are, indeed, very real. Fueled by her imagination, she created The Transhuman Chronicles–a series of books about people who have overcome human limitations.

Rose lives in Houston with her husband and two kids. You can visit Rose at www.rosegarciabooks.com

How Can You Prepare for a Book Conference?

A member of my street team asked me today if I had any advice for how she might prepare for her first conference. As a matter of fact, after attending over a dozen of these events, I do have a few tips to share.

Whether you are going as a reader, author, or industry professional, the first thing you should do is search for an event page on Facebook. Most conference administrators create a page where they can easily disseminate information. It’s also the perfect place to get to know other attendees. Interact with others on the page and make a few friends before you arrive. You can even plan a lunch date with a small group on the first day, so you can avoid sitting alone.

Next, you should have business cards, bookmarks, or some other paper product made and branded with your contact information so you can trade with everyone you meet. VistaPrint and Uprinting are two great places to have these made, or you can print them at home yourself. At the conference, you can make notes on the cards you receive from others to help you remember who gave them to you. After the conference, you can email or Facebook-message the people whose cards you receive and let them know it was nice to meet them.

Now you’re probably going to think I’m crazy, but I would also recommend that you brand what you wear. I’m not just talking about t-shirts with your logo–although that’s always a good idea. I mean the style and flare that can help set you apart from others and make you memorable. Maybe you wear outfits all in the same color. Maybe you wear the same skirt in different colors. Maybe you wear a special hat, headband, or jacket. Repetition and consistency will help your new friends recognize you at the con and recall you later.

This might also sound strange: make a special connection with one or two people. What I’m trying to say is that in addition to going around and exchanging cards with people and getting your whole networking mojo on, you should seek out one or two people and make them into friends. You can do this by offering to take notes for someone while they go to another panel, or by inviting someone to lunch or dinner with just you or a very small group, or by sitting in the lobby together during breaks to chat. This, of course, can’t be forced. It needs to happen organically. But don’t be afraid of missing out on mingling with the masses in favor of having an exclusive evening with one or two–because this one good friend (or two) will help you feel more connected to the con as a whole than a hundred acquaintances will.

One final thing: take a notebook along for taking longer notes. In addition to taking notes at the panels, you will want to make lists. If you’re a reader and/or blogger, this might be a list of new authors you want to read or new titles you want to purchase.  If you’re an author, this might be a list of industry professionals whose services you seek. If you’re an industry professional, this might be a list of potential clients. In your notes, you can reference the business cards you receive, and then you can add more information to help you remember how you can develop a better relationship with each new contact. And then, of course, you will want to make lists of all the new ideas you come up with after being inspired at the con.

I have additional advice for authors, which I will summarize here: If you have a table, be sure to run a newsletter subscription drive by raffling off prizes in exchange for email addresses. Also, encourage readers to buy more books by offering a discount or prize if they buy three or more. Hand out something–whether a bookmark, postcard, or button. Brand your space with a banner, colors, and props. Lastly, instead of trying to sell a book, sell yourself by being friendly, approachable, fun, and memorable.

And, most of all, HAVE FUN!

So, are any of you planning to attend a book convention in the near future?

Preorder Your Copy of The Calibans for $3.99

TheCalibans Final ebookI’m pleased to announce that The Calibans: Purgatorium, Book Three–the final book in The Purgatorium Series–is finally available for pre-order nearly everywhere. You can reserve your copy for $3.99 at any of these places:

Kindle   iBooks    Kobo

It should be available any minute at Barnes & Noble.

Purgatorium Final EbookAnd in case you haven’t already snagged your FREE copy of The Purgatorium,  the first book in the series, you can get it at any of these places:

Kindle   Nook   iBooks   Google Play   Kobo   Smashwords

Although this trilogy was written for young adults, it’s pretty intense, both emotionally and suspense-wise. Also, it’s got a lot of extra layers to it, particularly as a work of meta-fiction. What that means is that the series–especially in the final book–comments about itself as art. In addition to trying to tell an amazing roller-coaster of a story, I’m also giving you my definition of art (implicitly).

I hope you’ll give this series a try, even though it’s a major departure from my Gatekeeper’s Saga.
