A house on a hill.
A house filled with mirrors.
A house with eyes that watch your every
move.
“I hate it on sight. It’s dull and large and
clunky, a creepy old house with a creepy house smell.”
Learmonth Village has a history, a past that it holds dear, superstitions that it clings fast to. Learmonth House, however, is governed by its own set of rules, its own past. Gemma and her family are about to discover just what those rules are.
Learmonth has a pact with the darkness…
The darkness is hungry…

Amos Cassidy is the pen name for Richard Amos and Debbie Cassidy.
Amos is a 31 year old Diva and Cassidy a 38 year old mother of three; well, four if you include the husband. A common love of all things Joss Whedon, Urban Fantasy, and a tug of war over Jensen Ackles, brought them together, and one cold February afternoon, over nibbles and coffee, their partnership was born.
You can find Cassidy hard at work in her fortress of solitude which has eaten up the majority of her garden, and Amos…well he’s still trying to get the invisibility gizmo he got off a friendly alien in exchange for a pair of earphones to work. Funnily enough he hasn’t been seen around much
lately…
Frequent doses of Sugary snacks, coupled with regular injections
of caffeine aid in their production of a unique brand of cross genre tales.
They are always writing, but are happy to take a break to chat to their
wonderful readers, so drop them a line at amoscassidy.com, or just pop over to see what they’re working on and they’ll bust out the biscuit tin.

I’m still searching when I spot the strangest looking tree. It’s larger than the others, but that’s not what makes it stand out. It’s the trunk that draws me, split in two in the middle and twisted at the top to make an aperture that looks like the eye of a needle. It’s wide enough to slip through. At least I think it is. I am overcome by the strangest feeling of familiarity. I take a step toward the tree, and then another, suddenly eager to find out if my theory is correct.
“I wouldn’t do that if I was you?”
I spin around in alarm to find the owner of the voice.
“Hi.” He is leaning against a tree, all casual-like. He’s tall, taller than Liam, with dark messy hair and dark eyes. He is striking to look at, the kind of guy you expect to see in one of those Cinderella story movies, or a character from a young adult paranormal novel. I stare at him, expecting him to disappear or grow some pimples or something, but he remains as gorgeous as ever.
Liam. I love Liam, I remind myself.
He holds out his hand. “Come on, those things can be dangerous.”
I glance at the tree then back at him. “You have to be joking.”
“No.”
“So you’re saving me from a tree?”
He nods sombre-like.
I feel a stab of irritation. Who does he think I am, some gullible twat from London or something? I step back and touch the tree and quirk a brow at him. Hah!
His smiles. “Maybe I just wanted to hold the pretty girl’s hand.”
I don’t know what to say to that.
“I’m Sam.”
“Gemma.”
“Nice to meet you, Gemma.” He flashes that smile again, all white even teeth and a dimple.
“You live up at Learmonth, right?”
“Yeah, what about you?”
“I don’t.”
God, he’s trying to be cute. I hate that. “Um, anyway, I best get going.”
“Why? You just got here. There’s some lovely spots to sketch. I can show you if you like.”
I frown. How does he know I sketch? My pad is in my backpack.
He cocks his head as if listening to something. “You have artist’s hands and an artist’s eyes. I see the way you look at things.”
Once again I don’t know what to say to that apart from, “You been watching me?”
He smiles. “I spotted you a few minutes ago. So, you coming?”
I hesitate. “I don’t know, you could be a serial killer or something.”
He nods. “True, but then we’re far enough from your house and the village for me to just grab you if I want.” He grins disarmingly.
I laugh. “Okay, you have a point. Lead the way.” He turns and I follow. This could be good. He looks my age, maybe a little older. Making a friend could be good, make starting college easier with a familiar face to look forward to.
I can’t help study his back, tapered down to his tight butt. Damn, now I’m checking him out. He does have nice arms,
though, wiry and strong-looking even if he’s as pale as the moon. He doesn’t seem to feel the chill in the air.
I wonder if he’s wearing sun cream. I bet he burns easy.
I trip and stumble, but don’t hit the ground because he has me.
I don’t know how, but I have to ask. “Are you a vampire?”
He stares at me for a long beat and then bursts out laughing.
After a second I join in.
I realise he is still holding me, his hands warm on my skin. “Come on then, show me this place.”
He lets go of me and ambles off again. “Eyes on the trail now, Gemma.”

The Gatekeeper’s Trilogy Promo Blast and Giveaway Sign Up!
I recently released books 1-3 of The Gatekeeper’s Saga as a box set called The Gatekeeper’s Trilogy. Some of you may recall that the series was originally meant to be a trilogy. That’s why there is an actual ending to book three. I later continued the series with three more books at the request of readers (so happy I did, too!). (I will eventually finish the prequel, The Gatekeeper’s Bride, and the sequel, Hermes and Hestia, some time next year.)
The regular price for this digital trilogy is $5.98, which is the same price you’d pay if you got each book separately. But from June 7th through June 13th, the box set will be on sale for 99 cents. Then it will go back to its regular price.
To promote this sale, I’m creating a promo blast and rafflecopter giveaway. Any willing to share the post on their blog or Facebook page is invited to fill out the form below. To thank you, you will be included in the rafflecopter widget for entrants to either visit your Facebook fan page or follow you on Twitter (your choice). I’m giving away a $40 gift card (winner’s choice) and a signed paperback copy of the trilogy to one winner.
Thanks in advance to all who can support me! I truly appreciate your time!

Are You Ready for Comicpalooza?
If you plan to attend, please come see me in the Artist’s Alley at the Texas Writers of Teen Fiction booth! It might be listed as Rose Garcia Books, since my partner was originally going solo, and her name is, well, you know…
ROSE GARCIA. This is her. Isn’t she pretty?
We will be selling our books at a special convention price. Both of us write young adult sci-fi and fantasy. Her trilogy follows a girl being chased by a trans-human hunter through multiple lives, and she is on her FINAL life. Most of my books are about characters who find out that the ancient gods of Greek mythology are still alive and well, and the characters become entangled with them in ways both joyful and deadly. We will also have goodies at our table, so come by and get yours. My furry friend, Pinwheel, may also be visiting.
I am also so excited about being a GAME MASTER for the FIRST time!!!!
I hope you will come and try my game! It should be fun for the whole family, and you don’t have to be familiar with any rules beforehand. My game is called Greek Mythology Bingo Plus.
It will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Ballroom A, at tables 52-60. Click here for a map of the convention center.
I will be using my own original flashcards depicting 48 different characters from Greek mythology, and you, the participant, will be playing on a team of two to four around a beautifully illustrated bingo poster.
The first 50 participants get a goody bag just for playing. The bags will contain bookmarks, my Medusa button, and a chocolate coin.
And the winners will get their choice of a My Little Pony Pegasus, a tiara, a snake ring, or an Eva Pohler Books backpack.
The first time we go through all forty-eight cards, which might produce two or three winning groups, we’ll play the game at the “easy” level, which means all participants get to cover the image I call out whether you know the god, goddess, hero, or mythological being or not (and I will be educating you about them, to prepare you for the next level).
If we have time, we will then play at the “moderate” level, which means only those teams who can successfully identify the character whose name I call out may cover the image on their poster.
There is also a “difficult” level, but we won’t have time to play it at the con. I’ll just tell you a bit about it at the end of our session.
And if you are a writer or artist of any kind looking for ways to promote your business, you might like to attend my panel, Self-Promotion for Writers, which will take place on Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. in Panel Room 8, 370 C.
If you are not attending the con but would like to know more about my Greek Mythology Bingo Plus game, you can do so here. Beginning June 15th, you can also support the production of this game on Kickstarter, getting your own copy for only $20.
So, how many of you are coming to Comicpalooza?

Release Day Party May 11th!
If you haven’t already joined my Vampire Affliction release day party, scheduled for Monday, May 11th at 7 p.m. CST, please do! Just click on the banner below to get to the Facebook event!
I will be giving away a Tarot reading to one lucky winner EVERY night between now and release day!! I will usually do the reading between 8 PM and 10 PM CST, so check out the event page for details! These readings are based on Greek Mythology, which (as most of you know) I LOVE!
In addition to the readings, I will be giving away other fun prizes during the actual event on Monday night.
Athena, who makes appearances in this series, will be giving away her locket! I know many of you have been trying for months to win this inspirational piece of jewelry. Monday may be your lucky night!
As in The Gatekeeper’s Saga, Hades plays a major role in The Vampires of Athens (surprise, surprise! He is my favorite, after all!). He will be at the party to give away his t-shirt!
Although Medusa doesn’t come in until the third novel, she will be at the party to give away one of her shirts, too! And both these shirts come in adult small through 3X, though the Hades shirt style is a bit different for the plus sizes–solid black and no trim, like the Medusa shirt.
Speaking of Medusa, she also features on the backside of my Greek Mythology Flashcards. How would you like to win the VERY FIRST pack of the 48 beautifully illustrated cards, most of which were drawn by the talented Desiree De Orto?
And, in addition to the locket, the t-shirts, and the pack of flashcards, I will also be giving away a $25 gift card, a signed set of The Gatekeeper’s Saga, and a signed copy of Vampire Addiction!
So I hope you can join in for the fun this Monday, May 11th, at 7PM CST on Facebook. I’m giving away a $5 Amazon gift card to the person with the most invitees, so be sure to invite your friends!
To prepare for the release of Vampire Affliction, be sure to grab your 99 cent copy of the first book, Vampire Addiction. You can grab it here, if you haven’t already.
You can also pre-order Vampire Addiction here! Preorders help authors get their ranking up on release day, so if you plan on getting your copy, a pre-order would greatly help me!

Excerpt
Chapter One
Robin
Maybe I could call in sick. With something fatal. Something so contagious the entire high school would contract it just by looking at me. Was there such a thing? I took out my phone. “Okay, Google. What is visual contagion?”
“Good morning, Robin.”
For half a second I thought my phone had learned my name. And had started speaking in my mom’s voice? I entered the kitchen and found Mom in her pink bathrobe with the tea stain down the front, waiting for me. She must’ve heard me talking to my phone.
“Morning.” I set my messenger bag by the back door and took a seat at the kitchen bar.
Google had only come up with only one direct hit and was now blinking at me, waiting for something that would challenge its storage banks. The ‘contagion’ it presented wasn’t even a disease. It was some company in Vancouver that spread positive messages on organic hemp or bamboo T-shirts. Great. I ask for science, I get hippies.
“Do you think Visual Contagion would be a good name for a band?” I asked Mom as I scrolled through a few of the t-shirt pictures.
“Hmm,” Mom said, tapping her fingernail against her teacup. “A band that plays music?”
My turn to sit and blink. “What other kind is there?”
“Plenty. A wrist band. Hairband. Wedding band. Waistband.”
“Okay, okay.” She’d go on and on and then open the thesaurus app on her tablet if I didn’t stop her. “I’m a guy. I don’t think about hairbands or jewelry. Yes, I meant a band that plays music.”
“Then I’d say no. Visual Contagion, great a name as it is, would not work for a musical group.” She took a sip of her tea, Irish breakfast according to the tag hanging from the string, as she contemplated. “Auditory Contagion could work. Audio? Audial?”
Auditory Contagion would indeed be a damn cool name for a band. Almost made me want to form one. Except I couldn’t play a single instrument. Not even that plastic flute-thing they made us play in elementary school. Maybe I could compose something on my computer. I needed music for my video game anyway.
“Okay, Google. Popular music software.”
“Would you like some breakfast?” Mom asked. “Or are you just going to play with your phone until it’s time to leave?”
My mom wasn’t the most domestic person. She did like to feed people though, and when she took the time to make an actual meal, she was a great cook.
I set my phone in my lap and analyzed my hunger level. “Juice and toast with butter and jam. Two slices.”
“Two? You’re hungry today. What kind of tea?” She held up her Irish breakfast to me with a questioning look and wiggled the box as if that would lure me to the Celtic side.
“English breakfast, please. With cream and two sugar cubes.”
“Off to the range,” my dad said as he entered the kitchen and set a black case—smaller than a briefcase, larger than a lunchbox—on the gray marble counter.
“Before work?” Mom asked.
“I don’t have any meetings until ten today. I want to try out my birthday present.”
Who knew a guy could get so excited over a handgun? Then again, this one did have a built-in laser. Guns weren’t my thing, but if presented with a laser-operated piece of technology I’d be all over it. So, I could understand his enthusiasm to a point.
“Want to come with me, Robin?” Dad asked as he plugged the first of two coffee pods into the machine to fill his travel mug.
“Thanks, but I do have a meeting before ten,” I said. “I have that test first thing.”
“Finally,” Dad said. “I don’t understand the holdup on allowing you to take a placement test. You studied?”
“Of course he studied,” Mom said as though nothing could be more unthinkable than me not studying.
“I did,” I told them. “Don’t worry, I’ll pass.”
“They should put him directly into Calculus and Differential Equations,” Dad said.
“He could handle it,” Mom agreed, “but AP Calculus will be an easy A for him.”
“Good point,” Dad said and clapped me on the back, nearly knocking me off my stool. “Build that killer GPA. Get into the college of your choice and academic scholarships as well.”
“Don’t pressure him,” Mom said, setting a plate with my buttered and jammed toast on the placemat in front of me.
*****
Shawn McGuire is the author of young adult novels that blend contemporary settings and issues with a touch of fantasy and magic. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that’s episode IV) as a kid. She couldn’t wait for the next movie to come out so wrote her own episodes. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to write is as strong now as it was then.
Her books deal with harder topics (death of a sibling, divorce, dating violence, bullying, and teen suicide) because she believes it is important to talk about these things. Those kinds of topics can be hard to handle and a bit overwhelming, so she infuses a bit of humor in her work as well because she also believes that a sense of humor can help you get through just about anything.
Shawn lives in Colorado with her family where she spends her time reading, cooking and baking, practicing yoga and meditation, and hiking and camping in the spectacular Rocky Mountains.
