My heart pounded with thoughts of
why they’d come. Did something happen to Dad? Gran? My mother? Once I entered
the house, the taller of the two cops stopped talking.
“Ash?” My mother blinked at me, eyes red and swollen. Then
she jumped up and attacked me with a hug.
My arms circled around her, squeezing tight. I didn’t
understand why the happy reunion since
I’d only been gone for a few weeks. Tears wet my cheeks anyway. I’d wanted
this, for her to miss me. Gran hugged me next, followed amazingly by my sister,
Lucy. Then they all stared at me like my
head might pop.
“What’s going on? Why are they here?” I gestured to the
cops.
Mom eyed me up and down “What are you wearing, and why are
you all wet?”
I looked down at the puddle under my feet from my pink
beaded gown, realizing my mistake. Luckily, Fin walked in behind me. He quickly
sang, using his mer mojo to get them to
ignore my attire.
“I’m sorry to interrupt the reunion,” the shorter cop turned
to me, “but you’re under arrest, Ashlyn, for arson.”
“Arrest?” I leaped backward.
Mom stood between us. “I told you. She didn’t do this. I
don’t care what evidence you have!”
“Ma’am, please…”
Fin started to sing, “Ash is innocent, and it’s time for you
both to leave.”
The cops’ eyes glazed over.
“Sorry for the confusion.” The taller of the two looked at the shorter one, then nodded and they left.
“We’ll be going.”
I swallowed hard, my heart thundering.
Then my mother’s gaze turned cold. “Where have you been?”
I flicked a glance at Fin. She’d been mojoed. How could she have forgotten? “I was on
a mission trip in Africa.”
She chuckled. “Really? And where are your plane tickets?
Your visa? Your passport?”
Fin opened his mouth to sing, but I grabbed onto his hand to
stop him.
“No. Let me handle this.” They deserved answers, not some
fishy mind-jacking makeover. I turned to my mother. “You’re right. I wasn’t in
Africa.”
Mom’s jaw tightened. “Then where were you?”
“I was with Fin and his family.”
“Doing what?”
I gritted my teeth. What could I say that didn’t sound
totally lame? “Just traveling.”
“Traveling?” Mom barked out a laugh. “Are you kidding me?
Oooh! Jack and Maggie are going to get an earful!”
“Karen,” Gran said. “I’m sure there’s a logical
explanation.”
“Let me handle this, Mother!” Mom snapped.
“Please,” Fin whispered to me.
I held up my hand for him to wait, but I had no excuse to
give her that wasn’t a lie. How was that any better than just singing them a story? “Mom, just trust me—”
“Trust you? You disappear without a word, and I’m just
supposed to look the other way?” She stretched the small space between us and slapped me. “This is unforgivable, and
your life will be over as you know it, Ashlyn Francis Lanski. You can leave
now, Fin.”
“Karen!” Gran scolded. “That’s uncalled for.”
I turned away, gasping while I held onto the stinging flesh. My mother and I may have had a strained
relationship, but she’d never hit me before.
Gran begged for Mom to calm down, while Lucy let out a rude cackle. Fin sang for everyone to
sit and be quiet. Tears trickled down over my hot face, and my stomach turned
over, making me want to vomit. I knew coming home wouldn’t be blissful, but
this? The wedding most definitely wasn’t happening now.
Fin walked over to me. “Let’s just smooth this over and find
out what’s happened.”
I wanted to, but with the cops ready to arrest me, I knew whatever
had happened was irreparable.

Four Reasons YA Authors Should Target Teens on Facebook
Teens have much greater power than you might think!
One common misconception I see posted over and over again in Facebook groups for authors is the idea that authors who target to the 13-17 age group on Facebook are wasting their money, because this demographic, for the most part, does not buy.
While it’s true that teens rarely make their own purchases, I have found that they have a significant influence on those who do. I have been targeting teens on Facebook since June of this year, and I’ve discovered four important reasons to keep doing it:
Teens love to comment, especially when they love a book, and this provides social proof and, thus, more power to your ads. If you take a look at this particular ad of mine for my Gatekeeper’s Saga Box Set, you will see some teens quickly coming to my defense when one or two others accuse the book of sounding too much like this book or that. You will also see teens posting about how much they loved the series and can’t wait for more. This ad is a perfect example of that. All this talk increases my organic reach in addition to adding more selling power to the ad.
Teens tag their parents and beg their parents to buy the books for them. If you take a look at the comments in this ad, you will see dozens of examples of teens tagging their parents. And in this ad, one teen says “easy present” after tagging her parent.
Teens ask their libraries to order the books. Several teens have posted on my ads that they have their library tracking down copies, such as the fifth to the bottom comment on this ad. My paperback sales have been better than they’ve ever been, and I can’t help but wonder if librarians are buying. I’ve even been receiving orders from Follett School Solutions!
Teens tag their friends and spread the word about your books. Even if they don’t buy themselves, the teen readers tag their friends and get them talking about your books. If nothing else, this spreads brand awareness. If you look through any of the ads I’ve linked to so far, you will often see one teen telling another something like, “Should this be our next series?” or “Wanna read this with me?” More than adults, teens seem to love to read in pairs and groups, and this tagging exponentially increases the reach of my ads.
One other frequent comment I get from teens is that they can’t download my permafree books because they don’t have a credit card. An easy way to remedy this is to publish your books at Smashwords and post the links to them in reply on your ads, like I do here. Smashwords requires no credit card information and makes it possible for anyone to download your book. This makes Smashwords an essential tool for writers of teen fiction.

EXCERPT ONE
“Well, you need to remember everything you’ve been told about the neutral area between strongholds. The Outlands of Temple are cursed. Yes, it’s a large city and thrumming with people, but it’s also a supernatural focal point. A vortex of some sort that attracts people. Normal and supernatural alike.”
I gulped. “So it rains here all the time. Why would anyone want to stay here?”
Ephrem rubbed his face, scratching his chin.
“Look, I don’t know how much they’ve told you, but like I said, it attracts people. It attracts all sorts of unsavory people too. That’s why it’s dangerous to go traipsing around this place at night. Actually, it’s not safe at any time. No one leaves willingly, either. This place is like… I don’t know… like the strongest magnet in the world. It draws you in, latches onto you and never lets go. People are warned to never come here. Only those of superior supernatural powers are ever able to break the hold it has over them.
I stared at him in horror. “What? Are you saying I’m stuck here?”
He frowned, letting his eyes drop down to his coffee as he added sugar and cream to it. Stirring furiously, he took a moment before answering me.
“Technically, yes.”

EXCERPT TWO:
“My Lady, I cannot leave you here alone. It’s not safe.”
I whipped my eyes open and glared at him. “I told you I was banished. You can stop with the formalities and get. I don’t have time to waste on a pathetic royal guard. Especially a MarkTier. I’m okay on my own.”
“If you come with me, I know a safe place where you can get out of the rain and get warm.”
I laughed. It came out more hysterical than I intended, but I was not in a mood to keep it together any longer. The fact that he offered me any shelter at all, most likely his home, was gracious, yet the knowledge that it was most likely on ArcKnight territory made the offer even more bittersweet. I was banished not only from the royal ArcKnight palace but from lingering on any of the pack’s territories, which included a substantial chunk of the city.
I was truly alone now.
“You’d be punished for harboring a non-citizen… a traitor like me. I can’t. You know I can’t.”
He held out his hand. It glistened with water, for he was soaked to the bone, just like me. The cold rain didn’t affect him at all. I was the one shivering and on the verge of hypothermia, and yet he waited patiently.
“It’s beyond the ArcKnight border. I promise.” His eyes gleamed in the momentary moonlight sneaking past the storm clouds above. They were breathtaking and unusual. I’d never seen another shifter with eyes like his.
It may be beyond the ArcKnight stronghold, but they weren’t the only pack ruling the city.
“But the MarkTiers….”
“They have no jurisdiction there either.”
Staring at him in disbelief, I let my eyes linger on his for an eternal moment. His offer brought more questions to my mind than anything else. Even so, there was something there that held me in a trance and beckoned me to follow. Taken in by that hypnotizing cobalt sea, I reached out, accepted his hand and let him lead me through the murky city paths I’d never trodden, deeper into the unknown.
This place was now my new home, and it was nothing but strange and frightening.
But what choice did I have?
