Barb’s Italian Summer #2: Italian Lunch Rituals And The Magic Of Sweet Siesta

This is how lunch in Rome works: You go to one of your favorite family-run trattorias just around the corner. Today, in my case, Fior Fiore, whose owner Alessio has become a good friend over the years. Fior Fiore has been a household name in the Spagna area since 1975, and it’s one of the most popular places where locals buy delicious fresh pizza by slice.

You sit at one of the tiny tables outside the restaurant, with red checkered paper place mats, where chairs are so close to each other that...

Barb’s Italian Summer #1: Getting Settled In My New Apartment On Piazza Di Spagna

So here I am getting settled in Rome. It’s about 8pm here as I’m writing this, and I’m starting to enjoy and appreciate the cozy pad I’m going to call home for the next couple of weeks. This year, my Chique Italian summer is starting in Rome, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay.

My apartment is on the third floor of a beautiful palace right on Piazza di Spagna, the heart of the Eternal City. My living-room-slash-dining-room-slash-kitchen has a view of the Spanish Steps and I can...

Chique Interview With Author Germaine Shames

Today I have the pleasure to interview a wonderful author and fellow Italy lover: Germaine Shames. If you haven’t yet, read my recent review of Germaine’s fabulous book You, Fascinating You, and listen to our interview on Chique Show.

Germaine, welcome to my blog. First, can you tell us about your relationship with Italy? What do you love about it?

I first visited Italy while studying at university in Switzerland. The contrast between the two countries struck me instantly. Italy had a vibrancy...

Chique Book Tour Day #6: The Magic Of Morning Silence And Sounds

What’s the first thing you do in the morning when you wake up? I hope you don’t reach for your Smartphone to check your e-mails! Our love for life continues and this is what Peggy from Kick Back Moments has to say about it:

“Each day when I get out of bed, before brewing my coffee; before firing up my computer; before checking my e-mail, I take a few minutes to focus on the sounds of morning.

What do I hear?

The humming of nothing. It really does have a sound, like what you hear when you put a...

Chique Book Tour Day #5: The Art Of Being Pretty Darn Imperfect And Loving It

In case you didn’t know, I’m a recovering perfectionist, which is just perfect for today’s stop because I’m on Cathy C. Hall’s blog. Cathy has written a beautiful post about the art of being pretty darn imperfect and loving yourself and your life unconditionally.

Cathy says: “When I was very, very young (we’re talking back when I was just Cathy C. and in 4th grade), I worked very, very hard in school because I absolutely, positively had to be the best in everything. Because if I made a mistake...

Review – A Lovely Book About Italy: Coins In The Fountain By Judith Works

As a lifelong nomad, globetrotter and expat, I love meeting fellow travelers who’s had the privilege to experience living in a foreign country – especially if the country is Italy, my home away from home and the love of my life.

In her book “Coins In The Fountain”, whose title is a reminiscence of the famous movie, Judith recounts her and her husband’s adventures in Italy that were a dream come true, although sometimes quite bittersweet.

Judith’s narrative is colorful, captivating and delicious...

Review – A Lovely Book About Italy: “You, Fascinating You” By Germaine Shames

I love books that are based on real-life stories, reflect the modern history of the world, are connected to the arts and are excellently written. Germaine’s “You, Fascinating You” has all these ingredients, and much more.

In this book, Germaine explores the life and love story of Hungarian ballerina Margit and Italian composer Pasquale. Torn apart by the fury of World War II, they struggled and survived, becoming eternal thanks to Pasquale’s famous song “Tu, solamente tu”. As the book tagline...
