Intimations of Austen review: Jane Austen by way of John Prine

Look closely at the title of Intimations of Austen by Jane Greensmith and let that be your guide as to the nine mostly short stories inspired by the novels of Jane Austen. Because these are not stories Austen would have written or at least not the stories she would have written for publications. In fact [...]

No Place Like Holmes videos

Here’s a quick link to the latest No Place Like Holmes series Mary Morstan Mysteries. I can’t even begin to explain NPLH without being snarky, so just watch the video or follow the link (which should take you to a playlist that will play the videos in order). The videos are an acquired taste but [...]

The Well-Read Sherlockian

I’ve fallen very far behind on my attempt to list other blogs relating to Holmes and Austen, but since I’m promoting a book again, it behooves me to update my list. From facebook, I found The Well-Read Sherlockian and several quite well-written reviews of recent Holmes pastiches, including Amy Thomas’ The Detective and the Woman [...]

What I'm reading

This is something of a roundup post because I've recently taken advantage of some free Kindle editions and also repaired an embarrassing oversight. I never knew that a fellow Janeite in my local JASNA chapter was the author of Intimations of Austen because unlike me she does not bore people to death with her accomplishments. [...]

My Particular Friend copies arrived safe and sound

Finally, my first 30 copies of My Particular Friend have arrived. It took CreateSpace quite some time to print, possibly because CreateSpace had some problems for several days and might have been backed up. With luck, I'll have some news where the books can be bought in Denver.

Review: The Adventure of the Borgia Ring

Found while perusing the Sherlock Holmes Authors Group 2: The Adventure of the Borgia Ring, a brand new Holmes audio pastiche that harkens back to those old Holmes and Watson radio adventures, without the constant ads for Petri Wines. Of course, without advertising these new adventures from Jim French Productions must be bought, but the [...]

The origin of cricket

There are so many wonderful little delights in Lucy Worsley's If Walls Could Talk. I'm going to guess many Brits know this, but I was surprised at the theory that the children of laundresses invented cricket. It relates to the way the Tudors washed clothes: they beat the dirt out with a wooden bat called [...]

What I'm Reading: The Deception at Lyme

I always feel a little guilty when I find myself devouring the pages of a Jane Austen pastiche, continuation, adaptation or whatever you call them. I usually allow myself fifteen minutes of reading before sleeping and if rereading one of the six books, that usually means just a few pages actually get read. For instance [...]

Sherlock Holmes and the overlooked murder

NOTE: If you have not read either The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle or The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans, DO NOT PROCEED! We all know Sherlock Holmes occasionally let criminals off scot free, most famously I think in The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle when he let James Ryder free with this explanation to [...]
