Janeite meets Sherlockian
When I first came up with the idea of writing a book that combined Jane Austen and Sherlock Holmes, I worried that Janeites (as Austen admirers are called) might not like a heroine modeled after the great Victorian detective, or that Sherlockians might not care about the matrimonial prospects of young women of good breeding [...]

The Deception at Lyme review
In an earlier post I mentioned my guilt at devouring this Austen pastiche, especially considering how slowly I read Jane Austen’s actual novels, and it is with further shame that I report that I finished Carrie Bebris’ The Deception at Lyme (Or, The Peril of Persuasion) in record time. As penance I must go back [...]

What I’m reading: Sherlock Holmes, The Titanic Tragedy
Who knew Doctor Watson and Sherlock Holmes were on board the Ttitanic, battled Professor Moriarty, worked to recover stolen U.S. Navy submarine plans (what is it with Holmes and submarines) and more importantly, survived? This is another surprise from my husband; it’s good to be married to an enabler.

Review of My Particular Friend
Jackie Blem of the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver has reviewed My Particular Friend. It doesn’t start out promising — “I really don’t do the whole Jane Austen thing, or the Sherlock Holmes thing either, so I very reluctantly agreed to be an early reader for this book” — but it does end well.

Update on the twitten “Library Passage” in Worthing
An update from Christopher Sandrawich with the Midlands branch of the Jane Austen Society in the UK: I am copying in all those who I have already alerted to the possibility of the closure of this right-of-way used by Jane Austen during her stay at Stanford’s Cottage in Worthing in 1805, and those who have [...]

Jane Austen, Colombian drug lords and Crocodile Dundee
As I have written elsewhere, I do not have Jane’s confidence that the story of two people (or two couples) in love can provide enough plot to sustain a novel. I’m writing a book called either Jane, Actually (or Jane Austen’s Book Tour) that imagines a present-day Jane Austen about to begin the book tour [...]

JAS Midlands Branch needs more help to save “Library Passage”
Help! My friend at the Midlands Branch of the Jane Austen Society of the UK needs some information to help save the “Library Passage” in Worthing. You may recall this is a shortcut Jane and family used to pass from Stanford Cottage to Stanford Library when they stayed in Worthing after the death of Jane’s [...]
