AirX’s AirFish Wing-in-Ground (WIG) craft preparing for certification

Kimberly Hudin April 22, 2024

ST Engineering AirX and Bureau Veritas are partnering to focus on classification and certification of AirX’s AirFish Wing-in-Ground (WIG) aircraft.

Wing-in-ground (WIG) combines marine and aeronautical design to utilize ground effects (GE). Ground effect (GE) is an energy-saving aerodynamic phenomenon due to the increased lift and decreased induced drag that occurs when flying close to a flat surface, such as an aircraft wing. ground or water. The lift coefficient creates a floating effect.

The structure of AirX’s AirFish 8, a 10-passenger WIG vessel, is made from carbon fiber reinforced composite materials to reduce weight and increase strength. The V8, 500 HP engine runs on 95-octane automotive-grade unleaded gasoline, and the GE-generated aerodynamics saves fuel at high speeds and provides a range of approximately 300 nautical miles. AirFish 8 will fly at a height of up to 7 meters, with a maximum speed of 106 knots and a cruising speed of approximately 80 knots.

AirX and Bureau Veritas have partnered on AirFish 8 classification and certification.

Jeffrey Lamb, president of commercial aerospace at ST Engineering, said: “In our pioneering effort to commercialize the world’s first WIG aircraft, we have chosen to partner with Bureau Veritas to classify and certify the AirFish ground wing solution. , an important milestone in realizing the huge potential of Wing-in-Ground technology in areas such as the provision of semi-public services and logistics services. Together with Bureau Veritas, we are revolutionizing maritime transport. We look forward to using our innovative technology to set new standards for innovation and safety.”

U of T scientists develop method to measure plastic emissions

Researchers at the University of Toronto have developed a framework for measuring plastic pollution emissions. This is no different from the global standard for measuring greenhouse gas emissions.

They say this approach will help identify the biggest sources of plastic pollution from local to national levels and improve strategies to reduce emissions around the world.

The first-of-its-kind framework, using Toronto as a model, suggests Canada’s largest city emitted nearly 4,000 tonnes of plastic pollution in one year alone.

Alice (Sia) Zhu (provided image)

“This means that the equivalent of about 400 garbage truck loads of plastic is discarded across the city each year,” said Alice (Xia) Zhu, lead author of a study outlining the method published in the journal Environment Science & Technology. “This means that it is leaking into the environment.”

“Assigning responsibility for pollution to jurisdictions with the ability to legislate means we cannot hide where pollution comes from. This is a major source of plastic pollution in the region. This is an opportunity to identify and inform measures to reduce these emissions.”

Zhu, a PhD candidate in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at U of T Scarborough, who works with assistant professor Chelsea Rockman in the U of T College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, is working with colleagues at U of T. I developed this framework. T and Rochester Institute of Technology. The researchers took inspiration from guidelines for creating greenhouse gas emissions inventories developed by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Adapting to the physical differences between greenhouse gases and solid pieces of plastic, researchers have used a similar methodology to identify the major polluting activities in a given region and within a given period of time. The amount of pollution produced by each activity was calculated and the associated uncertainties were considered. For each source of pollution-causing activities.

The framework will be submitted ahead of international talks to be held in Ottawa from April 23 to 29 for a legally binding global agreement on plastic pollution. The discussion is being led by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution.

“Our goal was to develop an accounting mechanism or tool to measure plastic emissions that governments at all levels can implement,” Zhu said. “But most importantly, we hope that this tool that we have introduced will enable the plastics sector to follow in the footsteps of the climate sector, where each country will have to register their national emissions inventory. to international organizations such as the United Nations to track our country’s progress towards achieving global goals. ”

Currently, there are no national emissions inventories for plastic pollution, nor are there any globally defined targets for reducing plastic pollution.

Littering waste, including foam packaging debris, accounted for the largest proportion of Toronto’s plastic pollution estimates in 2020 (Photo by U of T Trash Team)

To demonstrate the usefulness of this framework, researchers created a 2020 inventory of Toronto’s plastic pollution emissions based on publicly available data collected through municipal waste audits and other sources. Between 3,531 and 3,852 tonnes of plastic pollution is estimated to have been emitted from the country, from a list of nine sources, including littering, tire dust from airplanes and road vehicles, washing machines, paint from road signs and house exteriors. did. Boundaries of the city during the period.

Littering accounted for the largest proportion of the total, at 3,099 tonnes, while artificial turf had the highest amount of microplastics (particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter) at 237 tonnes.

“It is not surprising that larger materials, known as macroplastics, in this case consisting of poorly managed waste such as littering, accounted for the majority of the mass. , thus overshadowing microplastics,” said co-author Rockman. This research and Mr. Zhu’s supervisor for his doctoral program. “Microplastics tend to have the highest number of actual debris. This suggests that policies related to microplastics, in addition to macroplastics, are important in reducing plastic emissions in the City of Toronto.” doing.”

The researchers chose Toronto, Canada’s largest city and North America’s fourth largest city, to test the framework.

“This is an urban center of various activities, and where there are many people and activities, there will inevitably be a lot of pollution,” Zhu said. “To make a successful and useful case study, you need to consider where there are different sources of pollution, so you can understand which sources should be prioritized for reduction over all other sources. Demonstrate the utility of emissions inventories to inform local policy.”

Mr. Zhu said that an emissions inventory of plastic pollution must be a fundamental part of any successful international treaty on plastics, and that this framework should be used to better understand what types of plastic pollution are occurring. should be applied to other cities, provinces, states, and countries around the world. released into the environment.

“This guideline is applicable to regions around the world, regardless of the type of information source,” Zhu said. “Each geographic region has different characteristics, and our inventory allows us to develop solutions tailored to that specific region.”

Establishing a strong New England position in the craft beer market

In fact, New England rivals California in some ways when it comes to craft beer.

This may come as a surprise to some, since California is a famous craft beer mecca and is more than twice the area (both population and land) of all six New England states combined.

The method I am writing about today is quite specific, but still worth noting. A recent report from the Brewers Association found that California had 11 of the top 50 craft beer producers, and New England had eight. I think this is an impressive number for New England considering the difference in size between the two regions. Of course, this is even more frightening since Oregon, which is much smaller than California or New England, had six of the top 50 spots.

These statistics come from the Brewers Association’s recent annual report on America’s craft beer industry production.

Of the top 50, Massachusetts did hold three entries: Boston Beer Co. (No. 2), Harpoon of Boston (No. 18) and Jack’s Abbey of Framingham (No. 38). He only had one in Connecticut, which was a surprise to me. Athletic Brewing Company, located in Milford, is a non-alcoholic beer brewer and ranks number 10. This shows just how capable a good NA beer can be. (I’ll be writing about a few more NA beers in the coming weeks.)

Maine’s Allagash (No. 15) and Shipyard (No. 46) both charted, as did Vermont’s Fiddlehead (No. 28) and Rhode Island’s Narragansett (No. 23). New Hampshire was shut out.

The number of open craft breweries also continued to increase, reaching an all-time high of 9,761 in 2023. The number of new brewery openings (495) decreased from the previous year, and the number of closures (418) increased, but the overall year-to-year increase was still significant. Craft breweries also directly employed 191,421 people in 2023, an increase of 1.1% compared to 2022.

Bart Watson, vice president of strategy and chief economist at the Brewers Association, said 2023 was a “competitive and challenging year for small, independent breweries.”

“Nevertheless, despite slowing growth, small breweries remain highly has proven to be resilient,” he said.

Additionally, while the overall beer market saw a 5.1% volume decline in 2023, craft beer actually gained market share, as the volume decline for craft beer was only 1%. Craft beer currently accounts for 13.3% of the total U.S. beer industry.

“While the distribution industry remains highly competitive, we continue to see success stories and signs of growth across the Top 50 list,” Watson said. “Even in times of slow growth, the strongest brands still resonate with beer lovers, regardless of company size or location.”

Maryland craft beer lovers look forward to the annual festival in Frederick

For beer lovers in the greater DMV area, one of the most anticipated events of the year is just around the corner. The Maryland Craft Brewers Festival will be held in downtown Frederick on Saturday, May 11th, giving locals the opportunity to sample beers from approximately 60 Maryland craft breweries. This is the 11th time the event has been held in downtown Frederick.

The one-day festival, sponsored by the Brewers Association of Maryland (BAM), celebrates the craft beer movement, which has exploded in popularity across the state in recent years. There are currently approximately 130 breweries operating in Maryland, a significant increase from a decade ago. This festival offers a unique opportunity to taste beers from both established and new breweries.

“The Maryland Craft Beer Festival is about more than just enjoying good beer. It’s about supporting local businesses and celebrating the craftsmanship and collaborative spirit that defines our industry. This is a must-see event for anyone who wants to understand the story and creators behind it,” said Caroline Cichon, Heavy Seas Beer Brand Manager and President of BAM.

In addition to beer tastings from Maryland breweries, this year’s festival will feature several ciders and meadries. There are a few breweries that haven’t even opened yet, that are still in the planning stages and have yet to pour samples. Rounding out the event will be artisan stalls, food trucks, two stages, and six live music artists performing throughout his day.

For breweries, the festival is an annual opportunity to showcase their beers and connect with fellow brewers from across the state. “I think another purpose of the Maryland Craft Beer Festival is really the connection, partnership, and camaraderie between breweries,” explains BAM Executive Director Kelly Dudek. “It’s not often that they’re all together with their product. You see a lot of relationships forming here.”

Dudek added that the convivial atmosphere often leads to plans for new collaborations. This is also really great. ”

For craft brewers themselves, the festival provides an opportunity to share their creations with beer lovers in a fun and lively atmosphere. “This festival is more than just tastings. It’s a vibrant gathering that showcases the innovation and community of local breweries,” Dudek said. “Join us to taste the diversity of Maryland’s beers and interact with the passionate artisans who bring them to life. It’s an experience that celebrates friendship.

“This is a very friendly industry and it’s exciting,” Cision added. “I have friends at other breweries, so it’s great to be able to all go to the same event, share each other’s products and respect each other’s craft.”

The festival’s primary purpose is to go beyond simply celebrating Maryland beer to raise funds and awareness for BAM’s efforts to support and grow the state’s craft beer industry. All proceeds from this event go directly to the nonprofit organization to support its promotional efforts and advocacy for brewer-friendly laws and regulations.

“If they choose a drink, first choose something local. This is a great place to visit and sample breweries from about 60 states,” Cision said. “This event will help provide support for the Brewers Association to continue our work.”

Mr. Dudek emphasized the importance of this support, saying: So the more support the association can get as a nonprofit, the better it can support Maryland’s breweries. ”

More than 3,000 attendees are expected, 59 breweries have already registered, and we’re hoping for perfect May weather, especially in charming downtown Frederick, for the 2024 Maryland Craft. All signs point to the Brewers Festival being a huge success. Already, beer fans from all over the state are making plans to gather at the event to sample Maryland’s thriving craft beer scene while talking beer with brewery staff and other enthusiasts.

“This annual event celebrates the community and creativity of local breweries. We invite you to join us along the creek as we explore Maryland’s diverse beers and learn about the passionate people behind each beer. I sincerely hope you will meet the artisans,” Dudek said.

And there’s good news for those who can’t get enough of Maryland beer. The Brewers Association is planning two more festivals in late 2024. That includes his November Baltimore Craft Beer Festival, which features beers from the winners of the annual Maryland Craft Beer Contest. .

Cheers to Maryland’s craft breweries! With events like this celebrating world-class products, there’s never been a better time to drink beer in the Free State. Whether you’re a seasoned beer drinker or a newcomer to the world of craft beer, this festival is an event you don’t want to miss. Mark May 11 on your calendar and get ready to enjoy some of the best beers Maryland’s craft beer scene has to offer.

Dallas Prince’s Perspective – Solitaire International Magazine – India’s leading B2B gem and jewelry magazine

Dallas Prince, the creative force behind Dallas Prince Designs, USA, shared his insights on the International Gem & Jewelry Show (IGJS) in Jaipur and its influence on his work. Dallas is an award-winning international designer whose professional life includes a television home in which he was engaged in the shopping industry for 24 years and has performed live shows in five countries.

Please tell us your first impressions about IGJS Jaipur.

I have never been here before and have so many feelings about this particular IGJS. When you’re in a new place, you want to see everything. Oddly enough, I’ve seen more on this show than I expected. I’m a girl of color and I love jewelry. I have seen countless amazing gemstones in my career. I say that because everyone has done their best with this show and I don’t need to watch any more. I’m so excited to be here and I want other people to be a part of shows like this.

What opportunities for collaborations and partnerships do you see arising from this event?

Partnerships are an essential part of the jewelery industry, as it is the number one supporter of diversity, inclusion and equity. I think our industry sets the standard for these values. I would like to collaborate with anyone in this industry. Because it’s about trust in who we are, what we do, and how we do it. At the moment, I can say that he has already collaborated with 6-7 of the manufacturers and stone distributors that he met here at the show, and he is looking forward to more.

Are you currently working with Indian suppliers?

Although I have been working with Indian suppliers for many years, I am embarrassed to say that I had never visited India until 2023. I was always working with everyone using CAD, both online and through apps.

I have been able to successfully run a very large scale business with India for a long time. The difference now is that I came here and everything changed. Now I would like to work with you personally. That alone would make a huge difference to my business and my customers.

Are there any Indian jewelry crafts that you incorporate into your business?

India has a lot of talented artisans, craftsmen, cutters and more. The list of things I love about working with India is long. I incorporate different aspects of jewelry into my brand, such as enamel engraving and delicate filigree, which are all very difficult to execute. But India seems to handle all this easily and provide these services at the highest level.

Are there any Indian motifs that inspire you?

You know, Indian motifs have presence and mobility, which means life is movement, and I enjoy that. Everyone here has so much energy and it shows in the jewelry, the cutting, and everything else they do. It’s a great source of inspiration for me. The people I’ve met are tireless, ageless, and just amazing. I could probably talk for hours about the people, artisans and jewelery professionals of India.

What are the current trends for the coming year?

Current trends are easier to predict than ever before, as the fashion industry takes the lead and decides which colors will be in style. The jewelry industry can do well to follow suit, knowing this is going to be a blooming year. There are flowers everywhere you look, some made from gold, silver, platinum, carved, enameled, hand-painted, and even gemstones themselves. The great thing about it is that it gives us something timeless and something to cherish. Flowers never go out of style, at least in my book.

Halifax’s Indigenous crafts and vendor market succeeds

The Mi’kmaq Child Development Center held its first Indigenous Crafts and Vendors Market on Sunday, and organizers called the event a success.

Halifax’s Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Center hosted more than 50 vendors, giving customers plenty of options for food and crafts to take home.

Lisa Robinson from the Mi’kmaq Child Development Center said the event also serves another purpose.

“We came here to raise money to take our families on a powwow camping trip every year,” Robinson said.

“This year we will be attending the Wendike International Powwow in Quebec. We have about 23 family members and dancers, so they will be dancing at the powwow as well.”

Robinson said attending the powwow will be a new experience for many families.

“They’re really excited to be able to dance in such a big powwow, far from home, in places they wouldn’t otherwise be able to go,” she said.

Robinson said she used to travel a lot when she was younger, but now that she’s organizing events, things have “come full circle.”

“Now I’m on staff helping with planning and directing, and it’s a different kind of experience,” she said. “Being able to provide these opportunities for families is really important.”
