U of T scientists develop method to measure plastic emissions
Researchers at the University of Toronto have developed a framework for measuring plastic pollution emissions. This is no different from the global standard for measuring greenhouse gas emissions.
They say this approach will help identify the biggest sources of plastic pollution from local to national levels and improve strategies to reduce emissions around the world.
The first-of-its-kind framework, using Toronto as a model, suggests Canada’s largest city emitted nearly 4,000 tonnes of plastic pollution in one year alone.

Establishing a strong New England position in the craft beer market
In fact, New England rivals California in some ways when it comes to craft beer.

A recent report from the Brewers Association found that California had 11 of the top 50 craft beer producers, and New England had eight. Maryland craft beer lovers look forward to the annual festival in Frederick

I’m a girl of color and I love jewelry. I have seen countless amazing gemstones in my career. I say that because everyone has done their best with this show and I don’t need to watch any more. I’m so excited to be here and I want other people to be a part of shows like this.
What opportunities for collaborations and partnerships do you see arising from this event?
Partnerships are an essential part of the jewelery industry, as it is the number one supporter of diversity, inclusion and equity. I think our industry sets the standard for these values. I would like to collaborate with anyone in this industry. Because it’s about trust in who we are, what we do, and how we do it. Are you currently working with Indian suppliers?

Everyone here has so much energy and it shows in the jewelry, the cutting, and everything else they do. It’s a great source of inspiration for me. What are the current trends for the coming year?
Current trends are easier to predict than ever before, as the fashion industry takes the lead and decides which colors will be in style. The jewelry industry can do well to follow suit, knowing this is going to be a blooming year. There are flowers everywhere you look, some made from gold, silver, platinum, carved, enameled, hand-painted, and even gemstones themselves. The great thing about it is that it gives us something timeless and something to cherish. Flowers never go out of style, at least in my book.

Halifax’s Indigenous crafts and vendor market succeeds
The Mi’kmaq Child Development Center held its first Indigenous Crafts and Vendors Market on Sunday, and organizers called the event a success.
Halifax’s Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Center hosted more than 50 vendors, giving customers plenty of options for food and crafts to take home.
Lisa Robinson from the Mi’kmaq Child Development Center said the event also serves another purpose.
“We came here to raise money to take our families on a powwow camping trip every year,” Robinson said.
“This year we will be attending the Wendike International Powwow in Quebec. We have about 23 family members and dancers, so they will be dancing at the powwow as well.”
Robinson said attending the powwow will be a new experience for many families.
“They’re really excited to be able to dance in such a big powwow, far from home, in places they wouldn’t otherwise be able to go,” she said.
Robinson said she used to travel a lot when she was younger, but now that she’s organizing events, things have “come full circle.”
“Now I’m on staff helping with planning and directing, and it’s a different kind of experience,” she said. “Being able to provide these opportunities for families is really important.”
