Canadian filmmakers rise despite indifference to their craft

I’m always disappointed in how undervalued the role of the director is in British-Canadian theater. This is reflected in how few places are available to learn directing techniques compared to drama schools.
The English side of Canada’s National Theater School accepts just two directing students every two years. In addition, there are about a half-dozen smaller MFA programs focused on stage direction at institutions of higher learning, such as the University of Alberta and the University of British Columbia.
Toronto, considered the capital of English-language theater in Canada, lost a major MFA program in stage direction over the course of the pandemic. In August 2020, York University’s School of Drama and Canadian Stage announced the end of their joint program.
Started during Matthew Jocelyn’s time as artistic director of Canadian Stage, and offering students the opportunity to direct professional productions at nonprofit organizations in Toronto, York’s MFA focuses on directing as a creative practice. Attracted and nurtured artists interested in And it gave space to autisticism in parts of the country that were intermittently hostile to the idea.
In the short 10 years since its establishment (with only 10 graduates), York/Canada’s Stage MFA has helped budding directors improve their craft and get a start in other areas of the performing arts. He was highly influential in helping mid-career performing artists establish themselves. Shift in direction.
Among the alumni, Esther Shook is currently the artistic director of B.C.’s Caravan Farm Theatre, Ted Witzel runs Buddies at the Bad Times Theatre, and Majash Mrozzewski is the director of the National Theatre. He is the director of the school’s production department. Graduates Alistair Newton and Severn Thompson will perform at the Shaw Festival this season. (Newton’s film “Agatha Christie’s Witness” opens for review later this week and will run until October 13th.)
The cancellation of the York/Canadian Stage MFA is old news, but there were, well, more pressing issues in the performing arts at that point in the pandemic, and many were unaware of its end, so it’s worth bringing this up again. I thought it was worth surfacing.
That, perhaps paradoxically, came to mind after seeing some very well-produced shows in Toronto this week.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a comedy as sharply directed as The Women of the Fur Trade (now closed) at Native Earth Performing Arts, a collaboration between the Great Canadian Theater Company and the National Center for the Arts. was. René Morisot’s direction (repeated by Kevin Loring for a short run in Toronto) nailed the satirical tone of Francis Concan’s Louis Riel-inspired comedy. The tight timing of the pop-culture-laden pattern by the lead trio (Kelsey Kanatan-Waby, Cheri Maracle, and Lisa Nasson, all excellent) makes this popular play a perfect match for Tom Stoppard’s earlier work Rosencrantz It made me realize how much it has in common with “Guildenstern”. The existential depiction of characters waiting in the wings and joking around while a major drama unfolds is dead.
Next up is Sablyn Locke’s work on abstracted Shanika, as well as actor and playwright Bahia Watson’s solo exhibition of scenes from satire to poetry about the perceptions and boundaries surrounding black womanhood (Crows).・In theaters until April 28th).
In this one-act play, always worth the 90 minutes, Watson introduces all kinds of characters one after the other, like changing channels on a TV. One moment, as a soft-spoken, sweet-voiced actor, she ditches her Canadian accent and auditions for a stern-spoken character. Then she’s a talk show host who moderates off-handed discussions about colorism. Then she’s a snarky stand-up comic who struggles with the “sisterhood” stereotype.
In order to pull off this kind of kaleidoscopic solo exhibition, a strong director is required. I was impressed by Rock’s quick pace, the playful way they handled the unwieldy space of Crowe’s Studio Theater, and the way they integrated the live performance with Laura Warren’s vibrant video design. I received it. Locke helmed Dora Award-winning director Kanika Ambrose’s World Premiere last season and is becoming the go-to director for new films.
Then there was Mitchell Cushman’s admirably sloppy production of Lukas Nass’s public reading of the unproduced script about Walt Disney’s death in Soulpepper, which I won’t review here.
Perhaps watching these shows will make others less concerned about the state of the technology, but I frequently see comedic floundering, design clashes, and single-layered work that doesn’t aim high enough. I remembered that.
Three big world premieres will be held this week in Winnipeg, Hamilton and MontrealThe Comeback, a new romantic comedy co-written by Trish Cooper and Sam Vint, opens this week (April 24 to May 18) on the Royal Manitoba Theater Center Main Stage. Previously included in our list of 8 World Premieres to See in 2024, the film navigates “the awkward and sometimes hilarious relationships between Métis and settler families as they confront the idea of raising children.” It is described as a story about a pregnant couple who have to live together.
‘Beautiful Scars’, a new musical inspired by Tom Wilson (and Sean Smith)’s famous musician’s book ‘Beautiful Scars: The Secret of Steeltown, Mohawk Skywalker and the Road Home’, is coming to Hamilton! It will open at Theater Aquarius and run from April 24th to May. 11. Brad Wheeler spoke with Wilson in the fall.
Erin Shields’ new metatheatrical Shakespeare mashup, Thy Women’s Weeds, premieres this week at Montreal’s Centaur Theater (until May 12). Fast forward to 2022, and I spoke to Shields about her “Shakespeare period.” These included the play Queen Goneril and A Much Ado about Recklessness, which he rewrote for the Stratford Festival.
Three revivals and rentals open in Toronto this weekHuff was playwright/performer Cliff Cardinal’s most successful solo show before As You Like It or the Land Grant sparked interest in the work from Mirvish Productions and international festivals. . It will be held at Crows Theater for one week only (until April 28th). You can read my review from 9 years ago here.
Four Minutes Twelve Seconds, a play about consent by British playwright James Fritz, is currently having its Canadian premiere at Studio 180 at the Tarragon Theater (until May 12). The film is directed by new artistic director Mark McGrinder, and Megan Follows is included in the cast.
Tyson’s Song, Peter N. Bailey’s new play about the reckoning of two young black men, will premiere at Factory Theater’s Pleiades Theater from April 24 to May 19.

where to find it and how to make it
When I started playing Fallout 76 in 2018, there were no backpacks. So I never thought about it. But when I learned through a random comment that backpacks had since been added and had been in the game for years, I felt stupid for not making them. Then I went to collect the recipes for the pack and felt even stupider. Let us help you avoid this situation.
‘Fallout’ star Michael Esper says he’s ‘obsessed’ with the series, Luigi and more
Yes, like many players, I’ve returned to the irradiated online wilderness of Fallout 76. I started having an itch for MMOs on and off a few months before the Fallout show. But I resisted. But after watching all of Amazon’s excellent live-action series based on the post-apocalyptic RPG series, I couldn’t help but reinstall Bethesda’s online version of his Fallout. As is often the case, I spent a fair amount of time in Fallout 76 trying to figure out how to transport all the random junk I need to build structures and craft items in the game. .
My tedious quest to get a backpackWhile randomly browsing the Fallout 76 subreddit, I discovered that backpacks were added to the game in a past update. And you can carry more stuff. I was intrigued! I also felt like a dummy. Immediately, a quick Google search turned up a Reddit post and several guides explaining how to get the backpack. It seemed simple enough. So I fired up Fallout 76 and headed to Morgantown Airport.
According to Reddit, the blueprints for creating useful packs can be found on the second floor of the airport in an area you visit early on in Fallout 76. I had visited here many years ago, but have never been back since creating the original character. During the 2019 Wild’s Appalachia update, Bethesda added a backpack blueprint to this early game area. No wonder, since many new players stumble upon this.
However, for players who have already been traveling through the game for years, it can be easily missed as there is no need to return to the airport. So I went back. While fighting the enemies inside, I found a treasure chest on the upper floor and discovered…the blueprints were missing.

Screenshot: Bethesda
Why are backpacks not available at Morgantown Airport? At that moment, I had the same thought I had many times with Fallout 76. “Hmm, did I do something wrong or is the game just broken?”
So I fired up Fallout 76 again, joined the new world, and raced through the airport… only to find that my backpack wasn’t on my chest. Also. I checked the web to see if anyone else was experiencing this bug, and many others were complaining that, yes, their backpacks weren’t at the airport.
It turns out that Bethesda had actually moved the spawn location of the blueprints to a different area several months ago, which new players will encounter even earlier in Fallout 76’s start time. It’s a place to be.
I felt stupider than ever. But for now, let me help you avoid this stupid series of events by getting you a very useful backpack.
How to unlock and craft backpacks in Fallout 76To get the backpack now (April 2024), you’ll need to head to the Overseer’s Camp, located south of Fallout 76 near Wayward Bar. It’s located near the river just north of Greene County Lodge, in a chest marked Overseer’s Stash.
Screenshot: Bethesda / Fallout Wiki / Kotaku
Once you’ve looted the plan and then checked your inventory, you should be able to activate or “learn” the recipe. At that point, assuming you have the materials, you will be able to craft a backpack on the armor bench. Requires 1 cloth, 1 leather, and 1 steel. As you level up, you can create better versions of packs that can hold even more weight.
If you’re a new player who started playing in the last few weeks, you may have already picked up the Backpack Blueprint after visiting the Overseer’s Camp.
If you’re having trouble creating a pack, check the Notes section of your inventory and make sure you’ve activated the Backpack plan. Please note that you cannot use a backpack while wearing power armor in Fallout 76.
Well, now you have a small backpack. If you want a larger backpack that can hold even more stuff, you’ll need to complete the Order of the Tadpole questline. This is not very difficult, but it does take time.

A great combination: Cupcake and craft beer festival moves downtown
Still not convinced?
That means munching on cupcakes while drinking craft beer.
“Hey, all you have to do is come downtown on Saturday,” Anna Carrier said. “I think you’ll like it.”
Carrier is referring to the WV Cupcake & Craft Beer Fest, which will be held that day at Courthouse Square and lower High Street in downtown Morgantown from noon to 6 p.m.
She is the owner of The Cupcakery Cafe and Frosé on Collins Ferry Road. The store sponsors an event each year that combines cupcake creation and beer concoction. All for a worthy cause.
This year’s event, in partnership with Main Street Morgantown, raises money for the National Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease, a key fundraiser.
The Cupcakery’s founder, Janet Nelson Williams, who recently retired from the business but still helps organize the festival, has plenty to say about it.
Let’s start with some fun things to come.
Beer makers from West Virginia and the region will offer samples of their best craft beers, along with a variety of ciders and the aforementioned frosé, a partially frozen blend of rosé wine and fruit.
Of course, that’s where The Cupcakerie’s famous products come into play.
The icing matches the flavor notes of the beer and complements the cupcake’s filling. By the way, according to sweet legend, cupcakes first appeared in American colonial kitchens in his 1796 year.
According to Carrier, in keeping with festival tradition, The Cupcakery will be offering specials for the day, such as lemon shandy and chocolate stout.
Try our Strawberry Rosé Cupcakes! “We are particularly excited about this,” she added.
For more information, visit cupcakecraftbeer.com.
Meanwhile, she said both she and Williams are excited about the new downtown location this year.
“Courthouse Square is always great for concerts. Downtown has a really authentic atmosphere for events like this,” Williams said.
Bluegrass bands are also expected to participate, Carrier said, echoing Williams’ sentiment that the new location will also create a commercial and authentic center.
“You can enjoy a great festival while seeing what all the great businesses downtown have to offer,” she said.
sweet memories
As it is said, the festival benefits the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease, a vital fundraiser in the fight against a terrible disease that erases memories and erases lives.
According to figures compiled by the National Alzheimer’s Association, one person in the United States and elsewhere is affected by the disease and its cruel shadow every 67 seconds.
your mother.
your husband or wife.
Your sister, your brother, your saintly grandmother, and your resourceful cousin who you loved spending time with at family gatherings.
your father.
Williams lost her father to complications from Alzheimer’s disease in 2007.
John Nelson grew up in a Randolph County orphanage and answered the call of his country during World War II.
A motherless, fatherless hillbilly child survives the horror and chaos of D-Day’s Normandy coast, witnessing fierce fighting across Europe.
Nelson was still young when he returned to West Virginia after the war.
Although he was successful in business, Nelson was even more successful as a family man, according to his daughter.
“My father was a war hero,” she said.
“He was definitely my hero at home. And it was really sad to see him go.”

Victory Brewing Company becomes one of the largest craft breweries in the United States
Image via Victory Beer, Facebook.
Of the more than 9,500 craft breweries in the United States, Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown ranks as one of the largest.
The Brewers Association, a trade group representing America’s small and independent breweries, published its annual review of the U.S. craft beer industry’s output, “Don Tse,” in Forbes magazine. The Brewers Association also ranks the nation’s largest craft breweries.
In 2023, there were 9,683 breweries and 191,421 employees, a record high. Bart Watson, Chief Economist at the Brewers Association, said: “These numbers show that while craft beer is not experiencing the phenomenal growth it was five or six years ago, the industry is still on track. I think it shows that.”
Victory Brewing Company’s parent company, Artisanal Brewing Ventures, was ranked as one of the 50 largest craft breweries in the United States.
Victory Brewing Company was founded in 1996 in Downingtown. As one of the original top brands in craft beer brewing, Victory is widely known for its suburban beers such as Golden Monkey Belgian Style Tripel, Sour Monkey Sour Tripel, Dirtwolf DIPA and Prima Pils German Style Pilsner.
Victory has remained at the top of the craft beer world by leveraging its creativity and innovation to create interesting, high-quality beers that everyone can enjoy. As Victory Brewing looks to the next quarter-century of business, it intends to “move forward” to keep its customers happy.

Craft beer faces difficult times, says Brewers Association
Bart Watson, Chief Economist at the Brewers Association, provides the annual state of the industry. [+] Speech at the Craft Brewers Conference.
Don Tse
The Brewers Association, the trade group representing America’s small and independent breweries, today delivered its annual State of the Industry Address. Bart Watson, chief economist at the Brewers Association, described it as a “challenging situation”.
“There’s been good and there’s been bad,” Watson said in a speech to the thousands of brewers and industry professionals attending this year’s annual Craft Brewers Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. he said.
Craft beer production decreased by 1%. Categories within the industry have seen varying levels of growth and contraction. Taprooms were down 2%, brewpubs were down 4%, contract and rotating breweries were flat, local breweries grew 1%, but craft breweries were down 5%. Watson noted that there are breweries in all of these categories with varying levels of success. “Last year he saw 44% growth in the brewery,” Watson said in his presentation.
“The number of drinkers in this category is currently unchanged,” Watson said of the lack of growth. “And the number of people who say they drink more craft beer now equals the number of people who say they drink less.”
“But customers are still willing to shell out their wallets for beer that they value and enjoy,” Watson says. “Customers spent about $30 billion on small independent breweries last year.”
Some breweries are struggling financially, with stagnant growth and data showing the cost of goods is rising faster than prices. Watson said that while many breweries have probably found success by focusing their operations through cooperation and partnerships to achieve economies of scale, others have found success by associating craft beer with different drinking occasions. He pointed out that the company’s success lies in finding new ways to get craft beer into the hands of drinkers. .
Watson estimated that “125 million Americans who drink alcohol did not drink craft beer in the last month,” suggesting that brewers still have an opportunity for growth. Speaking to an audience of brewers, Watson said: “Many of your customers are very loyal. Successful breweries look for ways to get their customers to drink their product more often.”
“Craft beer as a category has seen beverage alcohol trends come and go,” Watson says. “But the craft is here to stay.”

Isuzu improves ultimate craft beer truck at CBC 2024
Isuzu Commercial Trucks of America, America’s best-selling low-cab forward truck distributor, today announced the development of a new craft beer truck in collaboration with Summit Truck Body. This truck will be on display at his 2024 Craft Brewers Conference April 22-24, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Isuzu’s Ultimate Craft Beer Truck debuted in 2019 and has grown in popularity over the years, much like the craft beer industry it serves. Recent research shows that craft beer sales will return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023, with the industry growing again. Craft beer pubs are common, and many local restaurants serve craft beer from local breweries.
Overall, drinking craft beer is a multifaceted experience that includes taste, culture, and community. Isuzu’s Ultimate Craft Beer Truck is a multi-purpose vehicle that helps connect all these aspects of your craft brewery business. This allows these breweries to make regular deliveries and promote their beers at live events, making them mainstays during the week and party machines on the weekends.
Craft breweries, casinos, and party rental companies have purchased large numbers of these trucks to serve at events and have successfully used them to promote their businesses. Trucks’ unique designs and features often attract public interest, forcing owners to perform show-and-tells of their trucks on a regular basis. By putting their own branding on their trucks, owners can regularly profit from being stars at festivals and customers’ social media posts.
Much like the mullet hairstyle, the chassis is the business at the front and the body is the party at the back.
16 feet. The Summit insulated body (16 feet long x 90 inches high x 96 inches wide) is cooled with his Thermo King 690R with electric standby capability. The walls are made of compressed foam panels with excellent durability and R-value. Inside, smooth walls, barrel-height e-tracks, and an insulated aluminum floor provide plenty of space to place kegs and crates while keeping your product refrigerated. Electric standby keeps product cool while providing flexibility when loading trucks in the evening for delivery the next morning. 2,500 pounds. The Maxon TE-25L Tuckaway Liftgate has side steps for easy loading and unloading. Its capacity and platform are large enough for a loaded pallet jack. Two toolboxes (one on each side) can store reefer power cords and event materials. 13 feet on the driver’s side. A power retractable awning provides shade on sunny days, and once the sun begins to set, LED lighting continues to illuminate the area below.
Convenience is at the heart of the designThe new tap system insert has been redesigned to incorporate the Isuzu logo and eight Perlick 650SS tap numbering system. It’s taller than the previous generation to accommodate larger faucet handles, and the drip tray is deeper to more easily catch overflows. This also gives you more space to place your pitcher and glasses.
Speaking of the drip tray, it has a built-in glass rinser that uses a 5-gallon Corny keg connected to the system’s gas and drains into a 15-gallon gray water tank that can be disposed of later. All these features make it extremely convenient for quick and easy setup, ease of serving, and most importantly, easy takedown at the end of the party.
The faucet door locks with two latches, and the lighting and shade are controlled by a switch, so you can set up and take down in less than 10 minutes. Saving time and reducing cleanup are the main benefits of this design.
This truck’s low-cab forward design allows the driver to see the ground just 8 feet from the front of the truck. Even better, the truck’s best-in-class maneuverability makes navigating tight city streets much more difficult with traditional taxis.
Breweries can pour a wider variety of beverages thanks to the truck’s new dual gas tap system. This new system allows you to simultaneously inject CO2 (carbon dioxide) or N2 (nitrogen) into your servers. You can set each of the eight taps to pour whatever you want. Each faucet has an individual pressure gauge so you can dial in the right pressure for each beverage. And if your audience prefers bombers or cans, the new body incorporates a “bomber door” for quick access to cold packaged beverages inside the refrigerated body.
Isuzu teamed up with Summit Truck Body, a renowned bodybuilder in the Pacific Northwest, to “brew” something special.
“Working with Isuzu on this project was truly exciting,” said Ted Croce, president of Summit Truck Body. Maximize functionality and convenience for the people you serve. ”
The Isuzu Ultimate Craft Beer Truck starts with a Class 5 (19,500 lb. GVWR) diesel-powered Isuzu NRR. Powerful, efficient, and reliable, the 5.2-liter I4 turbo engine produces 215 horsepower and 452 lb.-ft. of torque. A robust B10 durability rating of 375,000 miles is a testament to the engine’s long-term reliability. The Class 5 chassis provides sufficient cargo capacity for weekly deliveries and does not require a commercial driver’s license to operate.

CHELSEA – The Chelsea Community Center will hold its annual Spring Craft Fair on Saturday, April 27th.
The event will be held within the community center and will utilize both the gymnasium, activity room, and cafeteria.
This year’s spring craft fair is expected to be bigger than ever. There will be more than 50 stalls and at least 400 people are expected to visit throughout the day.
Program Director Jane Ann Mueller said the event is aimed at building community while giving vendors an opportunity to showcase their work.
“What I’ve noticed over the years is that people will come shopping and run into people they haven’t seen in a while,” Muerle said. “For me, it’s like connecting our community, just going out and doing something very modest.”
The craft fair is an indoor event and will be held rain or shine. Each vendor will have his 10×10 booth, scattered throughout the venue. There will be four to five food trucks outside for attendees to stop by for breakfast or lunch.
Gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. Admission is free. There will be a variety of featured vendors, from baked goods and snacks to handmade items such as jewelry and candles.
Mueller said after all the work behind the scenes, she’s looking forward to seeing the vendor booths and event attendees.
“It’s a tough job,” Mueller said. “We had to spread out everyone, so we spent a lot of time getting the layout in place. Having all the work done ahead of time reduces setup time.”
Vendors arrive as early as 7 a.m. to allow time to unload and repair booths. Moller noted that vendors must park across the street to ensure attendees have space to park close to the building after unloading.
