Dalljiet Kaur started the post with these words: “Take 2. A tattoo that represented the power to fall in love again. The power to trust again. The power to leave the country and dress all in love and the hope of having a family, me and Jaydon missed so much after 9 years of being lost in the fantasy of starting a family and all that I was told to believe.”

The actor explained that “Take 2” also represented him taking a second chance in life. “Take 2 was the opportunity I gave myself to call someone my husband. For my son to feel what it would feel like to have a father,” she wrote, adding, “Now I know there was no such thing as faith and loyalty, love and respect, togetherness and commitment Everything was all about numbers from the start, and loyalty was never on the table, so the switch happened quickly, he wrote.

She took a shower and almost lost her vision. It’s all because of the lenses

She added: “The packaging of the lenses didn’t even say to keep them away from tap water. You’ll have to consult the manufacturer’s online user manual to find that information.”

The protozoan can attack the cornea

Acanthamoeba keratitis is relatively rare, but it can have devastating consequences. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines this condition as a serious eye infection that can result in permanent vision impairment or blindness. This infection is caused by a microscopic, free-living, single-celled protozoan organism called acanthamoeba, which can enter the eye through contact lenses.

“This happens when you wear contacts and shower, swim or take a hot bath with them in your eyes,” Prochnow said. “You can get it any time your contacts come into contact with tap water, which includes washing your face with your lenses in. They create microcracks in your eyes that are so small that you usually don’t notice them, but when the water gets in this protozoan and flows through your eye, it can get trapped between the lens and the eye.”

Prochnow underwent a grueling treatment regimen, including eye drops administered 24 hours a day, every hour for three months, multiple medications and, finally, a cornea transplant in the hopes of reversing the effects of the disease.

Her pregnancy had to be terminated at 37 weeks to start oral therapy, otherwise she would have lost her entire eye. Prochnow’s treatment included miltefosine, an intensive medication that required weekly blood tests to monitor for possible kidney failure, and other medications that had significant side effects. Fortunately, her vision is improving.

“Wearing contact lenses in the shower is a bad idea for several reasons,” Dr. Meenal Agarwal, an award-winning optometrist in Ontario, Canada, told Newsweek. “The most important of these is the increased risk of infection. Shower water contains bacteria that can cause a serious eye infection called microbial keratitis, and if the bacteria gets on your lenses, they can get trapped in your cornea, causing a potentially vision-threatening infection.”

The optometrist added that acanthamoeba keratitis can also be caused by unhygienic cleaning or storage of contact lenses, using tap water to rinse lenses or cases, and overuse of contact lenses.

“Basically, the protozoan makes its way to the front surface of the eye and infects it, causing severe pain, sensitivity to light, blurred vision and permanent vision loss if not treated promptly and properly,” Agarwal said.

Acanthamoeba keratitis can be difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat because it is resistant to treatment. Typical treatment involves a combination of eye drops, such as antiseptics and diamidines, but a corneal transplant, such as Prochnow, may be useful when the cornea is severely damaged.

I wore contact lenses in the shower

Prochnow took to social media on July 18 to share her harrowing experience in an effort to raise awareness about the condition. Prochnow, who goes by the online name @rachelprochnow, posted a video on Instagram detailing her diagnosis and her journey through excruciating pain and recovery. The video has since racked up more than 800,000 likes.

“A year ago I went blind in one eye because I wore contact lenses in the shower,” she told her followers. “It was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt and today is the day I will get a cornea transplant and hopefully regain my sight.”

Climate activists destroyed Lionel Messi’s house. “Help the planet, eat the rich”

In his view, destroying the facade of the 37-year-old world football star’s villa is drawing attention to the “responsibility of the rich” for the climate crisis.

Argentina’s president shows solidarity with Messi

The banner held by activist-vandals reads: “Help the planet, eat the rich, abolish the police.”

Argentine President Javier Milei expressed solidarity with Messi’s family on the “X” website “in connection with this cowardly and crazy event” and called on the government of Pedro Sanchez to “guarantee the safety of Argentine citizens”.

This is not the first “action” of “Futuro Vegetal”

Representatives of the same organization (“Plant Future”) committed acts of vandalism in Madrid and Barcelona in 2022.

At the Egyptian Museum in Barcelona, a substance that imitates crude oil was poured into a display case containing a replica of a pharaoh’s mummy and the wall was stained with red liquid, while at the Prado Museum in Madrid, the slogan “+1.5 degrees” was painted on the wall between two paintings by Spanish painter Francisco Goya, which he believed was intended to “raise awareness” of the growing phenomenon of global warming.

Messi is recovering from injury

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, formerly of Barcelona (until 2021) and Paris Saint-Germain (2021-23), has been playing in the American-Canadian league MLS since 2023.

Messi has not played for Inter Miami since mid-July due to an ankle injury. The Argentine was injured in the Copa América final, in which Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 after extra time.

How to make Mary Berry’s easy creamy pasta recipe quickly

Mary Berry has a variety of pasta recipes, but one that stands out is her “perfect” pistou linguine.

The dish is a culinary delight that is not only quick, but also incredibly easy to put together.

With only 10 minutes to cook, this recipe is the epitome of convenience for busy evenings when you want something filling but don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen for hours.

Suitable for feeding four to six people as a main course, the amount can be easily adjusted for groups of different sizes.

Mary explained that pistou is a classic Provençal sauce made of basil, garlic and oil, similar to pesto, but without the pine nuts and parmesan.

Ingredients

300 g of linguine pasta

25 g of butter

500 g chestnut mushrooms in slices

75 g grated parmesan cheese

For Pistou sauce

Four tablespoons of coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Four tablespoons of coarsely chopped basil

Two tablespoons of coarsely chopped chives

Two cloves of garlic, crushed Juice of one lemon

200 g of full-fat creme fraiche

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

Start by combining the herbs, garlic, lemon juice and creme fraiche in a food processor and pulse until the herbs are finely chopped. Don’t hold back on seasoning, just add salt and pepper.

Bring the linguine to a boil in salted water according to the timing on the package; remember to keep two tablespoons of pasta water behind before draining it.

While the pasta is cooking, melt the butter in a large frying pan, throw in the mushrooms and fry them on a high heat for a minute or two.

Then change over a low heat in a pan, covered, for three minutes. After that, remove the lid, turn the heat back up and cook until they are golden brown and all the liquid has evaporated. Finally, scoop the mushrooms into a bowl.

Pour the dipping sauce and the reserved pasta water into the frying pan, heat until it just starts to bubble. Add the cooked pasta and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Turn the pasta until it is completely covered in pistou sauce and heated through.

Remove from heat and sprinkle in most of the parmesan and mushrooms.

Pour the delicious meal into a bowl and sprinkle the remaining parmesan and mushrooms on top. Add more spices if you think it needs it.

It goes perfectly with crusty bread with sauce, fried vegetables or a fresh side dish.

Bitcoin’s Looming ‘Death Cross’ Could Trap Bears as Bank of Japan Eases Interest Rate Concerns

“On July 16, the stock markets and many other risky asset markets reached their peak. For whatever reason, these asset markets began to sell off. As the selling continued, recent entrants to the YCT [yen carry trade] saw their assets fall, and to be clear, that’s almost always the driver of unwinds. But worse, the yen started to slowly rise. That was the beginning of unwind,” said Andy Constan, CEO of Damped Spring Advisors, in a detailed yen carry trade explainer on X.

WHO estimates that heatwaves in Europe kill 175,000 people a year

According to the World Health Organization, heat is the leading cause of climate-related deaths in Europe.

In an update published on Friday, the UN health agency said the heatwave is claiming more than 175,000 lives each year in the WHO’s European region, which includes Europe and Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan.

“Extreme temperatures like the ones we are experiencing now really do exacerbate chronic health conditions, including cardiovascular, respiratory and cerebrovascular diseases. [such as stroke]as well as mental health problems and diabetes,” said Hans Kluge, WHO director for Europe.

“The extreme heat we are experiencing is a particular problem for older people, especially those living alone.”

SEE | How climate change affects human health: Hair is the “canary in the coal mine” signifying life in a warmer, dirtier world

Marcelo de Paula Corrêa studies how climate change affects human health. In this experiment, he attached hair and sensors to bicycle helmets to measure the damage caused by heat, solar radiation and pollution during a 1,000 km ride.

Doctors say hot weather puts an extra strain on pregnancy.

Deaths caused by heat are on the rise

Between 2000 and 2019, an estimated 489,000 heat-related deaths were recorded worldwide.

Over the past two decades, heat-related deaths have increased by 30 percent worldwide.

The agency said temperatures in the WHO European Region are rising twice as fast as the global average, and the region accounts for 36 percent of global deaths. On average, that’s more than 175,000 deaths a year.

Kluge called on countries to develop heat health action plans to make places more resilient and adapt to more frequent heatwaves.

The report does not take into account recent hot summers or the heatwave that hit the Mediterranean region this week.

Stay safe in the heat

Earlier this week, a report by World Weather Attribution, a UK-based group that estimates the impact of climate change on individual weather events, found that without climate change, temperatures in Eastern Europe and North Africa would have been 3.3C lower in July. The latest heat wave killed at least 21 people in Morocco.

The WHO said the harmful health effects of heat can largely be prevented through good public health practices, such as raising awareness of the risks of extreme heat and providing tips on how to stay safe. Such tips include:

Avoiding heat during peak hours, e.g. avoiding strenuous exercise, not leaving children and pets in parked vehicles, and spending time in cool rooms when necessary.Keeping your home cool, for example by using blinds and shutters during the day.Keep your body cool and hydrated by wearing light, loose clothing, taking cool showers, drinking water regularly, and avoiding dehydrating drinks containing sugar, alcohol, or caffeine.Checking on family, friends and neighbours, especially the elderly.

The agency said it will provide an evidence-based reference point that will enable national and local authorities to develop their own plans or update existing ones to better manage heatwave risks.

DOJ says man with Iranian ties in New York tried to hire hitmen, a female spy and a fake protest group to assassinate US officials

The DOJ announced on Tuesday that it is charging a Pakistani man with plotting the assassinations of US officials.

Asif Merchant is accused of having connections to Iran and trying to hire killers in New York.

The DoJ has not said who was targeted, Donald Trump was said to be one of those threatened.

The Justice Department has charged a Pakistani man who traveled to New York and Houston with plotting the political assassination of US officials.

Asif Raza Merchant, 46, was arrested on July 12 and federal prosecutors have accused him of having close ties to the Iranian government.

The Justice Department said he planned to hire a woman to carry out the hit-and-runs as well as 25 people to stage a demonstration as a distraction after the killings.

The DOJ’s complaint, unsealed Tuesday, did not say who Merchant was targeting. But CNN and Reuters, both citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, said officials believed former President Donald Trump was among those threatened.

The 20-year-old gunman tried to kill Trump on July 13 – the day after Merchant’s arrest – in Butler, Pennsylvania. No evidence has been uncovered to link the attack to Merchant.

While the DOJ did not specifically say Merchant was working with Iran, FBI Director Christopher Wray said the case was “straight out of the Iranian playbook.”

Several other officials, including the FBI special agent in charge of Merchant’s case, also cited Iranian threats against the U.S. government in testimony and court documents.

The United States has been concerned about Iranian retaliation for a 2020 drone strike ordered by Trump that killed General Qasem Soleimani, the top commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iran’s UN mission and foreign ministry did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment outside of normal business hours.

The merchant’s plans, as told by the DOJ

Prosecutors said Merchant had spent time in Iran before arriving in the United States in April and also traveled frequently to Syria and Iraq. Authorities also said he mentioned he has a wife and children in Iran.

According to the criminal complaint filed against him, Merchant said he intended to target “those who are harming Pakistan and the world, the Muslim world.”

His first stop was Houston, where he contacted the person under the pretense that he wanted to start a business, according to the document.

However, the unnamed person suspected that something was wrong and went to inform the law enforcement authorities.

Investigators said Merchant then flew to New York that month to meet with the informant and said the latter could make up to $100,000 for helping with his schemes. To signal his intent, Merchant made a “finger gun” motion with his hand, according to prosecutors.

The informant later introduced Merchant to two men he thought were possible hitmen, but prosecutors say were actually undercover cops.

The document said he presented himself as a “representative” of foreign parties and suggested he was taking instructions to “finalize” his plan and leave the United States.

Prosecutors said Merchant met several times with undercover officers and asked them to speak in code.

He said he would likely give them instructions via a secure cell phone in August or September 2024 and gave them a $5,000 cash advance, according to the criminal complaint.

The DOJ added that the trader had also asked the men to steal documents, stage a fake protest and launder money.

Authorities said he was arrested in Texas after returning to the state to fly from the United States, where a note detailing all of his code words was found in his briefcase. The merchant is in federal custody and the FBI is investigating the case, officials said.

CNN reports that prior to the Butler rally assassination attempt, officials had passed this intelligence from Merchant to the Secret Service.

Trump’s campaign was previously reported to have stepped up security after learning of an Iranian plan to kill the former president.

The fact that the young shooter was still able to shoot Trump at the rally raised questions about the former president’s protection measures.

Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s after-hours request for comment.
