Wisconsin voters will put the Senate in a race and decide on issues that limit the governor’s power

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Wisconsin’s U.S. Senate race is officially set for Tuesday’s primary, while the strength of former President Donald Trump’s support will be tested in the Republican congressional primaries as Democrats decide on a candidate in a swing room district. In the GOP incumbent.

Wisconsin voters will also decide whether to approve two constitutional amendments passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature that would take away power from the governor.

If voters approve the changes, they would require legislative approval before the governor could use federal money coming to the state for disaster relief or other crises, unless it has already been appropriated.

Democrats, including Gov. Tony Evers, and a host of liberal groups and others organized against the changes, saying that if passed, it would slow down the distribution of money when it needs to be spent quickly.

But Republican supporters say the measures increase oversight and serve as a check on the governor’s power.

In the Senate race, Eric Hovde, a Republican millionaire banker backed by Trump, has dominated the Republican primaries and faces only nominal opposition. Hovde, who has already poured $13 million of his own money into the race in just four months, is preparing to face two-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin in the fall.

Democrats can win the race if they hope to retain control of the Senate majority.

In northeastern Wisconsin’s open 8th Congressional District, three Republicans are vying to succeed Rep. Mike Gallagher, an occasional Trump critic, who resigned in April.

Former gas station chain owner Tony Wied, who is running in his first race, talks about endorsing Trump. The former president cut a TV commercial for Wied. The race will be a test of how far Trump’s support can go, as Wied faces two challengers who have won legislative races that include parts of the congressional district: Roger Roth, a former president of the state Senate, who is backed by former Gov. Scott. Walker and Andre Jacque, a current state senator who claims to be a “proven conservative fighter.”

Dr. Kristin Lyerly, the obstetrician who sued to overturn Wisconsin’s abortion ban, is the only Democrat running.

Western Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, held by a Democrat for 26 years before flipping in 2022, is the most competitive district in the state, setting up a crowded Democratic primary to face incumbent Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden. .

Van Orden is a former Navy SEAL who was at the Capitol during the January 6, 2021 uprising and remains one of Trump’s most vocal supporters in Wisconsin. He is the main target of the Democrats.

Longtime state Rep. Katrina Shankland faces small business owner and former political activist Rebecca Cooke and political newcomer Eric Wilson in the Democratic primary.

The elections are also the first under the new legislative maps more favorable to the Democrats.

Lawmakers face each other in six primaries, including four Assembly races where the new maps pitted them against each other.

The winners of Tuesday’s primary will face off in November, when all 99 Assembly seats and half of the Senate are on the ballot.

Allocation of NBP reserves and liberalization of financial flows in the 1980s and 1990s. [materiał partnera]

The reserve assets of the National Bank of Poland will increase
The reserve assets of the National Bank of Poland will grow and in fact in euros they will approach 200 billion dollars, in dollars they have already exceeded this limit and the last item we reported was 214 billion dollars. We try to manage this, of course. Central banks operate in such a decision-making triangle, which means they must maintain the liquidity of assets as well as the credibility and stability of these securities and maximize the rate of return. These are the three objectives. We are trying to achieve these three objectives at the same time.

NBP to increase its involvement in corporate bond market and equity market

In recent years, some of our activities have even been noticed by experts and markets. Some time ago, we introduced a portfolio of held-to-maturity bonds, i.e. the so-called HTM portfolio – not actively managed, but after purchase it is held until redemption – it recently represents about 8% of our portfolio. We systematically buy gold bars, but this is a topic already known to the public – discussed many times – and recently we decided to increase our involvement in the corporate bond market and the stock market. And this is interesting because – I mentioned these three objectives when managing reserves – the most reliable and stable are the bonds of the largest countries and the largest economies, but in their case there are problems in achieving the third objective, i.e. profitability, because the most credible the issuer – be it the largest European economies, in this case we always talk first about Scandinavia, Germany, France and Benelux, or in the case of the United States – can earn a little less on these bonds than on more risky countries with bonds that are not so well perceived. But we do not want to go in this direction because we are a central bank and not an investment fund. Therefore, credibility, stability and security of investments are the basic and fundamental objectives. That is why we have decided to take a different approach, namely to increase our involvement in the corporate bond and equity markets.

NBP to invest in stocks through ETFs

We do not invest in bonds that would have a weak rating and, above all, we prefer to invest through funds, through ETFs, which means that we buy a cross-section of the entire corporate bond market in the United States and Europe. In Europe, of course, it is shallower, there is simply not as much paper, there is a different culture of financing industrial projects. Of course, the American market is more developed. We buy the entire cross-section of the market through ETFs. […] Because we invest foreign reserves, the World Bank and IMF rules on investing in reserve assets state that they do not include investments in the domestic market. That is out of the question. So these are foreign securities. And such a cross-section of the entire market means that the turbulence related to a specific company is basically not felt. This means that we somehow achieve this higher profitability by minimizing the risk of a particular issuer.

NBP buys indices through ETFs

We simply buy the index through ETFs and this applies to the European, British and American markets. So these are our assets. […] We have decided that in this medium-term perspective we will increase our involvement in the bond market. [korporacyjnych] up to 5% of our reserves and in the case of shares via ETFs up to 15%, but this will not be done instantly, calmly, step by step. We will report on this in the coming months.

Western Digital Introduces 4TB microSDUC, 8TB SDUC, and 16TB External SSDs

Western Digital’s 218-layer BiCS8 3D NAND is well-represented in a wide range of client and enterprise platforms, including WD’s upcoming Gen 5 client SSDs and 128TB data center SSDs. On the external storage side, the company showed off four different products: for card-based storage, a 4TB microSDUC and an 8TB SDUC at UHS-I speeds, and on the portable SSD side, we had two 16TB drives. One will be the externally powered SanDisk Desk Drive, and the other will be the SanDisk Extreme Pro enclosure with a lanyard hole in the enclosure.

All of them use BiCS8 QLC NAND, although I overheard talk at the booth (as I was saying goodbye) that they shouldn’t disclose the use of QLC in these products. The 4TB microSDUC and 8TB SDUC cards are designed for UHS-I speeds. They are sold under the SanDisk Ultra brand.

The SanDisk Desk Drive is an external SSD with an 18W power supply that has been on the market for a few months now. Initially launched in capacities up to 8TB, Western Digital promised a 16TB version before the end of the year. It looks like the product will hit retail soon. It should be noted that this drive uses TLC for the SKUs that are currently on the market, so it seems unlikely that the 16TB version will be QLC. The devices (at least up to the 8TB capacity) ship with two SN850XE drives. Given the recent introduction of the 8TB SN850X, an “E” version with modified firmware will likely be present in the 16TB Desk Drive.

The 16TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD was a technology demonstration. It is by far the highest performing bus-powered portable SSD yet at the show. Given the imminent launch of the 16TB Desk Drive, it is only a matter of time before a technology demonstration of the bus-powered version becomes a reality at retail.

This is Putin’s war. He can leave Ukraine

This is Putin’s war and if he doesn’t like it he can just get the hell out of Ukraine and leave it alone, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, referring to the Russian leader’s comments on Ukraine’s offensive in the Kursk Oblast.

On Monday, the Russian leader announced a “dignified response” to Ukraine’s actions, said Ukraine was trying to improve its negotiating position and assessed that the West was using Ukraine to wage war against Russia.

“Question” for Ukrainians

Last week, commenting on the Ukrainian operation in Russia, Kirby said the US had not been warned about it by Kiev and would “ask” its Ukrainian counterparts about it.

State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel also did not comment directly on the Ukrainian offensive, saying only that the US continues to support Ukraine and its right to defend itself against attacks from abroad, and that Washington’s policy has not changed.

Ultimately, decisions about how Ukraine conducts its military operations rest with Ukraine.

– he emphasized.

A mother with an overgrown garden gets a dream space for five children

People can really surprise you.

And just recently, a stranger left the young mother of five stunned by her incredibly kind gesture. The truth is that gardening can be a pain for many people.

But one UK-based green-thumbed specialist recently delighted a woman and her young children with cleaning. TikTok user @gardenyardzmowing1982 has 18,400 followers on the platform.

Now, he recently went viral after posting a video of himself cleaning a woman’s garden. The caption read: “Thoughts? The council refused to help a young mother of five with her overgrown garden as she fled a dv marriage.”

The one-minute video opens with a description that reads: “He just wanted a garden for his children to play in.” But the biggest surprise was that he completed it for free.

It showed an overgrown garden with nettles and no safe place for the children to play. Then when the man gets to work, he revealed how simple and satisfying it is to clear all the mess from the garden.

And what really got people talking was that he ended the clip by claiming he did the work for free. Now, after his lot of work, the garden seems cleaner, and a path leads out to the end of the farm.

The message garnered more than 5,500 likes and hundreds of comments, as the man’s friendly gesture did not go unnoticed. One said: “I really need this in my garden.” Another added: “Good job!”

A third commented: “Great, well done. The question about the nettles though, how do you keep them from growing back?”

To this the poster replied: “Either dig them up or get some strong weed killer and make a tea out of them which is very healthy.”

If this didn’t make you smile, we don’t know what will… What do you think of the man’s kind gesture? Leave us a comment below!

The Great Barrier Reef is facing the highest ocean temperatures in 400 years, threatening the survival of corals.

The Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders, is facing an unprecedented threat due to the highest sea surface temperatures recorded in 400 years. A recent study published in the journal Nature reveals that temperatures in the first three months of 2024 reached 0.19°C above the previous record. This alarming rise has led to widespread coral bleaching, where corals expel the algae that provide them with food and vibrant colours, leaving them white and susceptible to disease and death.

High temperatures pose a serious threat to the Great Barrier Reef’s marine ecosystem

The study, led by Benjamin Henley, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Melbourne, highlights the serious implications of this warming. The Great Barrier Reef, stretching more than 1,400 miles off the coast of Queensland, is home to the world’s largest collection of coral reefs and an incredibly diverse marine ecosystem. But rapidly rising sea surface temperatures are now putting this unique biodiversity at significant risk.

To understand the historical context, researchers reconstructed sea surface temperatures from 1618 to 2024. They used a combination of ship- and satellite-based data and coral cores recovered from the reef itself. These coral cores act as natural archives, with their strontium-to-calcium ratios providing information about past water temperatures. The study found that summer temperatures from 2016 to 2024 were almost 1.7°C warmer than the coolest summers of the past four centuries.

The data has prompted scientists to question the recent decision by UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee not to upgrade the reef’s status from “seriously threatened” to “dangerous.” Helen McGregor, a co-author of the study and a paleoclimatologist at the University of Wollongong, said the science clearly shows the reef is in imminent danger, contradicting UNESCO’s assessment.

She warned that urgent action was needed to prevent further degradation. Despite the bleak outlook, Henley said there was still hope for the reef if global emissions could be reduced. He stressed that the tools to address the problem were available, but that the speed of action needed to increase to preserve this natural treasure.

Biden said he dropped out of the 2024 race because his Democratic allies believed he had damaged their own campaigns

President Joe Biden cited pressure from House Democrats when asked by CBS why he rejected the 2024 term.

The president repeated in the Sunday interview that he believes he is up against strong odds Trump.

But his allies thought he could hurt their chances in their own campaigns, he said.

President Joe Biden said Democratic lawmakers pressured him to withdraw from the November election because they feared he would hurt their own political campaigns.

Biden spoke to CBS’s Robert Costa in an interview broadcast Sunday when asked about pressure from within the party to step aside.

“What happened was that a lot of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought I was going to hurt them in the races,” Biden said.

At the same time, he reiterated his belief that he had a strong chance against ex-President Donald Trump – a point he stuck to when he initially defended his bid to stay in the race.

“Look, the polls that we had shown it was a neck-and-neck race, it would have come down to the wire,” he told Costa.

But Biden said that amid the backlash against him, he became concerned that his health would dominate any Democratic candidate’s election debates.

“And I thought that would be a real distraction,” the president said.

Biden did not name individual senators or House representatives who have raised concerns with him. But several reports said a significant number of Democratic heavyweights, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, had tried to pull the president out of the vote.

Biden’s remarks to Costa, his first televised sit-down interview since the suspension, were a stark contrast to his earlier, dogged commitment to staying in the race.

For weeks, Biden had staunchly defended his decision to seek re-election after his lackluster debate performance on June 27 sent Democratic leaders into a panic. (Biden told Costa on Sunday that the debate was a “really, really bad day” because he was sick.)

Only “Lord Almighty” could force him to give up, he had said. Then, in a dramatic twist, the president announced in late July that he was stepping aside, saying the decision was “in the best interest of my party and the country.”

Vice President Kamala Harris has now secured the Democratic presidential nomination, and Biden told Costa that he fully intends to campaign for her, despite his earlier concerns about her health.

“I don’t have a serious problem,” he said.

The White House did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s after-hours request for comment.
